Why I've been lambing alone: Vlog 201

Many of you wonder why I do this job of lambing solo. Why don't I hire someone, and the biggest question of all...
WHY DOESN'T MARK HELP?
Here's the thing.
The sheep is my thing... much like the crops are Mark's. Yes, we both help each other when we need it. But it may not be in the way you think it should be. It may look like picking up groceries, or cooking supper.
Mark is still really busy.
He's been helping a good friend get his corn dryer working while they are struggling to still harvest their corn... A friend who's wife also just had a baby! So this is our way of helping them out.
During lambing, I have a system. I know which lamb, which mom is doing what, who to check and re-check... who needs a bottle, who needs recorded...
Everyday changes so drastically, that it is hard to step out and expect someone to step in. It takes training and time to do it well. So for now, I power through and do it myself (right or wrong, I am a control freak.)
Yes, I help Mark. But you don't see him working through the night getting caught up on fieldwork that gets pushed off, or babysitting a corn drier while I'm snug in my bed.
There are many jobs we do together, but on our farm, we have jobs we just prefer to do solo.

Your sheep being able to thrive in close quarters and producing so many lambs is a credit to your operation. While you may not have the answers regarding your rations, if animal health, lamb vigor and extra work being avoided is given a dollar value, you have to be well ahead. The old saying, a stitch in time saves nine could have been written for your operation just as easily. Maybe you might have a fan to move the warm moisture laden air down to the chimney area. Maybe a redundant grain dryer fan turned on and off. You might be surprised how effective it could be. Merry Xmas to Team Brock

I'm always impressed by the sense of community that exists in the farming community. I have seen it many times on agricultural channels that I watch. Someone inneed and all the neighbors show up asking nothing in return.

Outstanding! When you find something that makes a difference whether it's better feed or that hour or two earlier or a combination your finding what works. Keep it up. This video has really cheered me. What are neighbors for, but, to help each other. So happy that you are helping your neighbors; a winning system. Best of health to you, yours, and your sheep. I really like this channel, especially, the animals.

For years, we had folding up bunk beds in the barn office or we slept on hay bales in sleeping bags. Now with internet / WiFi cameras we can sleep in the house now. Even in late March early April, we can get freezing cold weather. Mama's and the lambkins need to be warm, dry and in the jugs quickly.

Someone had a good suggestion about a web cam being on constantly so we can check the barn at any time of day or night....Good idea but what would it cost Sandi to operate it...? Any body else got suggestions so we can get our fill of this barn and not have to wait until Sandi is free to edit her vloggmas...I suffer waiting until early afternoon and then I rush to open the KZbin of her’s...I know she is extremely busy and we all have to be patient with her editing...

There’s also the option of starting a patron so people that want to see the lambs 24/7 can pay a small monthly subscription in order to see that. Since I’d guess they’d have to spend extra on cameras and whatever to keep it running all the time

She also mentioned once that it's okay to leave ram tails. I assume because they're going to the butcher. But nobody where I live will buy rams with tails. Because if you keep them intact for breeders, you risk flystrike, and if you sell for meat, nobody wants to pay "extra" for a fat tail.

Friends of ours kids are doing lambs this year and their lambs have zero tails which is pretty graphic if you ask me. Two questions (and I’ve been searching your videos for an answer) is docking tails really necessary? What happens to the ends of the tails when they fall off? Keep up the great work, I know editing is hard.

If you lamb at christmas a lot why dont you put up flyers for young teens 14+ to come feed and play with the the lambs for you ? Over that three week period .im sure their parents would probably come along to help too .what you find a chore others would find a great day out for the family for free.also teaching a new generation of kids more about animals

I noticed your commands for the pooch are a little long. Commands are more clear to pups if they are one word and only one or two syllables. Teaching no is so useful. No and stop. With collies they always want to do stuff. Knowing when to stop is the trick

Why do you shorten the tail? I don't see that you answer many you tube viewers but I'm hoping you will.

Nutritionist isn’t smarter they are specialists and know about nutrition because it’s their specialty. They can’t do what you do.
