@@Capt_Frank Perhaps by 2028, when FS 2024 is finally stable. It follows the adage that sequels are never as good as the originals. Asobo should have continued working on MSFS 2020 and create a Lite version for gamers (AKA FS 2024), with streaming and mode capabilities. With so much lack of info prior and during the release, I decided to wait and see. I did not want to reward MS/Asobo for a poor product, so they would have the incentive to fix it.

@ My main concern is that their base design for MSFS 2024 was based on a streaming strategy, with the purpose to satisfy the casual gamers loading time requirements. So, it would be a difficult task for them to change gears at this stage. Let’s hope for the best.

People never mention the fact that 24 is AI Autogen scenery close to ground vs 2020 photogrammetry. The AI scenery seems too uniform, full of uniform trees and lots of artifact. . Fly in a place you are very familiar with in both 24 and 20. I think 2020 looks more realistic.

I went back to FS 5.1 (ran in DOS) from FSFW95 which was a pausing/studdering disaster. That was sometime in late in 1995. Stayed with the DOS version until FS98.

I got Game Pass to try it for a couple months before I bought it and I just dumped my subscription. Back on MSFS 2020. It just works. Smooth. UI is better. Stable. All my add ons work. They need to do a lot of work before I consider going back. I agree with all your comments and I think many feel the same. Thanks for the video.

I fly in 2020 to fly and enjoy the sim. In 2024 I only ever feel like I am testing a buggy and prematurely released piece of software. 2024 has lots of promise and certainly isn’t all bad. No doubt with time it will improve, but honestly if 2020 is anything to go by then we are looking at 18-24 months before the new sim attains a similar level of quality. I have not bothered with the career mode, quite frankly that sounds like an poorly implemented feature that is seemingly bug ridden and overly restrictive. As I understand it you cannot even land mid-mission to take on more fuel… but instead the user can set-up a button to refuel mid-flight. Ridiculous. I would estimate 90% of my simming time is spent enjoying 2020 and 10% working around the shortcomings of 2024 and ultimately being distracted by that rather than enjoying the experience. Such a shame. Any improvements to the sim for those of us who use it AS a sim are very much overshadowed by bug, incomplete features and element that are more game orientated. Long time simmers are forced to use career mode to get access to missions, yet the career mode sounds to restrictive for simmer to really embrace and engage with.

Great video so thanks Capt'n Frank. MSFS 2024 was a day one, well, pre=order purchase for me. Despite having a well very developed MSFS 2020 which saw me making many hardware improvements and add-ons along the way, and, thousands of dollars in payware airports and aircraft, I fell for the hype and promises of compatibility and understood this was going to be released as a well tested (by who exactly? I'd like to meet them and discuss programming and testing strategies). I figured all they'd learnt along the way would have been implemented in MSFS 2024 but one look ate to HUGE UI would indicate that it was started long, long ago and includes many of the faults we had in the early days of MSFS2020. I'm not the slightest bit interested in the "Game" aspects of the new SIM so all I wanted was an improved MSFS2020 but the novelty of grass and 3D trees wears thin rather quickly as I watched airport objects including bushes, fences , runway markers etc., etc. popping into view while I tried to tolerate so, so many other faults. It's a shame they seem to have temporarily abandoned a currently sinking ship (are there ships??????) and chosen to take some time off for the Christmas period when the sim is in such a disgusting shape and they owe so many people a serious effort and compensation for this mess. I'm in my mid seventies and have a very low tolerance for those who attempt to financially exploit me and no-one could convince me they have not done this. To protect what's left of their reputation, they should have called it MSFS 2026 and released as early release software for those who want to go through the drawn out process of being a Beta Tester . I'm not looking for 100% perfection but at least make a product 90% as good as you make it out to be. Yes thank you, I'll be back to MSFS 2020 and thank my lucky stars I didn't come in to the SIM at this stage. OK, enough from me, back to actually enjoying Flight Simulation with v2020. I stay with 2020 and A2A Comanche too :) It's a great combo. BTW - it's better to fly with higher MP and lower rpm than vice versa. Less engine wear ;)

@@Capt_Frank NP :) Mostly I use combinations: 24 MP and 2400 rpm for climb, for cruise - 1800-1900 RPM, about max throttle and lean mixture (45-50% of power), or if I have to go faster 2300 RPM and 23-24 MP. with rich mixture (70-75% of power). A 40% of power is mostly a minimum to cruise. For descent around 10-11 MP and 2500-2550 RPM. Today I made with Comanche to North Cap (it's a bit dark there lol) and Hammerfest ENHF airport :)

Yep, done the very same, uninstalled 2024 a week after downloading, steam refunded me and I’m back to 2020 with far less errors / stress and loving it. I know it’s improved a little since launch but I’ll be giving 2024 a wide birth for at least a year or so before I consider going back to it.

Honestly, hadn't bothered with 2024 since switching back to xplane 12 in September (2020 was still acting up a bit then unfortunately). No regrets tbh, and in terms of stability I haven't really had any major problems with xplane. Some minor sound issues with a couple of mods, but at least the error logs are diagnosable and quite honestly like you Capt. it's about the flying, not all the scenery exclusively.

Thanks for this. Agree - I've had 2024 for 2 weeks now on Game Pass, and I have to say I have given up. It sometimes looked really lovely, but I have had a multitude of problems, even getting aircraft started and doing a basic flight. In fact I didn't complete a single flight. Meanwhile I have flown numerous beautiful flights in 2020 over the same period, with a full house of everything I've ever bought or downloaded over the past 4 years - and that's quite a lot! So I give up. First for me too not upgrading to a new sim... and staing with the old one. Guess there may be a time in future. But a real pity this upgrade has proved so hard, for me at least...

Amen to all of your comments. You are spot on. I left a comment on the forums asking 2024 was released why??? It’s a very unstable game. The graphics and photogrammetry are atrocious. There are trees everywhere. It’s definitely not for the serious simmer. They have to be attempting to attract a gamer segment. The missions aren’t even set up to be taken with seriousness. I’m a real world private pilot. While flying some of the missions they have users flying in clouds without proper ATC clearance as well as flying the wrong altitudes for assigned headings, flying too slowly without being in the proper aircraft configuration, just to get an “A” grade. I don’t know a single real world instructor that would sign off on a student pilot’s logbook based upon the standards of this game. I feel like we were all duped into being glorified beta testers for 2024. This game was released far sooner than it ever should have been. I’m with you and everyone else who’s commented that they’ve moved back to MS 2020.

Honestly I think asobo thought MSFS 2024 was going to be a good experiment but they knew it wasn't going to be as good as MSFS 2020. I think MSFS 2024 is probably an alternative to 2020 but now that ppl have seen what 2024 is all about? They can safely return to MSFS 2020 and forget about the hype. Things have returned to normal, maybe in another 4-5 years from now asobo will release a sim with night and day improvements

Hey Cap!! I did the same... for me the real issue was the "streaming thing". My internet bandwidth is limited and so ASOBO left me behind. I hope they eventually bring the so-called world upgrades and aircraft into 2020 like was promised during the dev updates before the launch - but only time will tell. Yes I agree 100%. In 2020, the nav equipment works. If I am flying and I decide to go direct to somewhere o can punch it in on the panel in the flight. 2024 the nav does not accept input unless you pause the sim and use the tablet.

I like the default Heli's Asobo and MS gave us in 2024 though, I know the 407 was already in 2020 but the h125 and R66 werent, I wasted too much money on CowanSim heli's in 2020 though lol. I do agree about career mode in 2024, its a real grind... 2024 is also very annoying to set up joystick properly, dunno what they were thinking.

I fly MSFS2024 80% of the times and for me using free flight it is working great. The only time I switch back to MSFS2020 is when I want to fly my PMDG fleet. Once those are available in MSFS2024 I will u-install MSFS2020.

I have 7800x3d and rtx4070ti but 3 4k 55" monitors, even running at 2k I realize that taxes my system a bit and turned some things down. but even one monitor doesn't look as good as yours.

The frame generation helps a lot of FPS, but I think my MSFS started looking really good after I played around with my NVIDIA Filter Settings, maybe I should do a video on them settings.. Ditto. Bought 2024 and find career mode fun and the scenery is “pretty” but the performance degradation for a sim that’s supposedly better optimised than 2020 is very disappointing. I’m back with 2020 until MS/Asobo can resolve all the outstanding bugs and issues. Payware scenery and addon aircraft like Fenix and PMDG perform great in 2020 for me yet the Fenix is barely flyable in 2024!

I got ifly 737 max, it loads in the sim, but trying to get into the aircraft, forget about it. Even when i finally got into the cockpit, nothing works. i mean nothing. Microsoft rushed this and they should have really took their time before release 2024, but at the same time as a community we have to let them know what works and what doesn't work, its the only way the sim will improve so keep giving your feedback guys.

Agree with what you are saying ! Luckily I decided not to get 24 on launch as I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be great on start up ! So decided to wait until Christmas 🎅🏻 before taking the leap ! I've also thought a lot about going back to 2020, as you said, the UI is incredibly horrible, it seems like nothing flows, nothing is right. I practically only fly the 172 classic, every time I start a free flight I have to go and choose the variant and the livery, it's absolutely nonsensical. VFR isn't that nice in certain areas. It started well for me for a couple of weeks but for the last two weeks I have been getting the “bandwidth too low” message and loading times are horrible from one screen to the other and sceneries are like chicken soup when I can finally get into the air. My internet speed has not changed but for some reason now the system says it’s too low even if I have about 60 mbps. Very frustrating. I’ll put it aside for a while see if that resolves itself over time.

2024 is moving ahead faster than 2020 for me. 2020 was a dog for a long time. I am strictly VR and freeflight. Now 2020 is very dependable and enjoyable. In VR I can't use the new EFB and sometimes my favorite in cockpit addons FSKneeboard and GTN 750 won't work properly. So I am switching back and forth ... mainly because the weather and seasons are better in 2024.

I am RW pilot and IGI. Here is a reward for flight simmers. Take an online ground school and pass your FAA AGI advanced ground instructor or Instrument Ground Instructor IGI. No endorsement or flight time needed. You get a real FAA license/cert and it could lead to a real career in aviation. Ironically, Career mode is for kids/gamers and will never get you a career in aviation. 2024 is a hot mess. Just stick with 2020 and learn to fly realistically on VATSIM.

I think folks aren't being objective enough here. There is objectively more to do, objectively looks better, has better frame rates, all things being equal, even excluding the buggy career mode. I mean think about what HAS been done technology wise. It's so easy to find fault with anything, even looking through mountains of amazing accomplishment. Don't be that parent who looks at their kids project, and only finds that little thing wrong with it, instead of noticing all that they did and did well.

As someone who plays this on the series x, I prefer 24 because as a product now its almost as good as the finished product (2020) for no additional cost and 15 gigs download for a gamepass subscriber. In my experience, the cloud rendering is smoother and faster in 24 than in 20. in 20 i still get lagg sometimes with the cloud generation.

i am torn between 2020 and 2024... i do not feel more realisitc on 2024... i feel better flying in 2020... but the carreer mode is verry buggy, a lot of things in my opinion is not well constructed... i would like to see for instance in the brefings, basic information, like flight level, speed etc... because when doing career and taking a mission, i allways go and change, departure and approaches, to fit more the pattern positioning... and adjusting FL for the flight, but when i send the info to my ATC and avionics, well the ATC does not tell me what i sent them... so this is frustrating! for instance, i love to specify FL25 or FL15, but often, the mission is set to FL30 for instance for cargo or sometimes different... and my course, approach and stuff like that are not the same as the mission... this should be fixed, i mean, when you change those sort of things and you submit to ATC, the game should handle this. i still have crashes from time to time... switching from VR to CRT, often crashes the game. i would love to see less object colision during taxi... at start i was afraid to crash plane when driving through a car on the taxiway, turn out you wont! so now i just follow the blue arrow, because if you do not follow blue arrow you lose points for not taxing properly. at least, 2020 is not crashing on me for now... so i went back to 2020 as well for free flight... i hope they will fix all the carreer mode issues... i would love from the carreer briefs more details of the flight/mission.

Yeah I'm on xbox and 2024 hasn't imported any of my 2020 planes like the comanche. 2024 is very laggy and frustrating. Can't free look around cockpit with mouse in 2024. I really hate they completely removed the 2020 AI pilot feature, which had problems but it was great to just like the sim taxi, takeoff land everything in 2020. They removed it entirely from 2024 instead of fixing the minor issues. 2024 does look great though. Oh, I can't quickly select an fully planned IFR route like in 2020 from the world map ui. The 24 EFB requires so many more steps to flight plan. 2020 flight planning with IFR waypoints is very quick. Haven't spent 1 minute on career mode. Watching others vids of career mode and live streamers it just seems like a tons of actual work. I already have a real job. 2024 does look amazing. Still no crash effects though, like a wing ripping off in a storm. Ice effects are very slow on 2020 and 2024. Icing effects are obvious on xplane mobile for comparison. Fortunately 2024 was free on gamepass!!!

Well said. I to went back to DCS and MSFS2020 as well as X-Plane12. I fly the sim that has the best version of an aircraft I want to fly. MSFS2024 just is not there yet. Only time will tell. Good video!

I gave up on 2024, back to 2020. The experience is everything, and 2024 is a complete failure on that matter. Rushed out to the market. It‘s a shame, I want to love it but the frustration is just too high. Works on a monday, not on a tuesday, kind of on wednesday etc…It‘s like a gamble, let‘s hope all goes well today. This can‘t be the way to go. I‘ll be back in a few months

@Capt_Frank 2024 has slightly better performance when it comes to CPU bottleneck in my testing. Sometimes I could get a 5-10 fps improvement in 2024 in the biggest airports (my processor is like 3 years old so it wont be anything amazing anyway) But in turn 2024 just murders my GPU now, everything looks like potato and I see no considerable difference in graphics. 2024 does make the CPU bottleneck a bit better but is a GPU melter for no reason. If you get Auto FPS for 2020 you can make it so that you get a stable 30fps even in the most demanding airports in the most demanding planes at 1920x1200 (a midle ground betwen 1080 and 1440) with these specs. I just see no reason why I should switch. If I fly a simple GA I can get a solid 40 in these demanding airports. In 2024 I was getting 24-30 and with 0 eyecandy.

Of course Im running i9-14900 ks with a 4090 64 ram I’m 80 frames with ultra settings 6 monitors no shutters and in the green . Running spadnext ,air manager,fsreallistic,sim shaker, navigraph,fstl,popup manger . I get 70 frames at JFK

I have not bought fs2024 yet. I'm going to give it time and see if ALL the bugs are fixed by mid November. If its not running buttery smooth by then, I won't be buying it at all. From what I've seen the UI is a mess as you mentioned in this video. I absolutely will not put up with a buggy UI. Sure fs2024 has some cool features, but all the little bugs just kill the deal for me. I ain't stressing with it.

Couldn't agree more. I've now reverted to 2020 after a horrible experiences with 2024. One day the game is somewhat playable with 30fps, a few hours later (no changes to my config) I get lots of stutters and be lucky to get 10fps. The inflight menu is buggy. Once activated to say speak to ATC, the mouse stops responding to any of the airplane dials and buttons, I've had graphic details so horrible and degrades the longer you fly. CTD is a daily occurrence. its not smooth nor is it playable. What's the point of career mode if you can't fly the sim with any level of stability, half decent graphics and frame rate? I think it will take Microsoft over a year of serious bug fixing to get this game to be playable. So like you, FS2020 is back to being my goto game for flight sim where I can still get to enjoy flying.

Yeah it's kinda like phone app game level as far as the logistics but I'm having some fun with going through the certifications and enjoying the scenery/scenarios. I missed that from FSX, the story progression as you completed the tasks (trigger points) successfully. Enjoy 2020!

I am enjoying 2024 despite everything, some of the horrors I have seen in career mode are some of the funniest bugs I have seen in a while. The Bonanza with a passenger on the bottom, one of the other planes had a guy through the wing. For how I fly in free flight mode, 2020 and 2024 are very similar for me. I do not care about most of the game bits, I like flying the world and getting out of the plane. I do not love the UI. I think 2024 will be a better game in about a year or so

I did have a thought of what is really not fun about career mode. Whenever you need to move a plane between missions you should have the option to free flight it between levels. I also wish I could choose to take my planes in free flight, with cost being deducted from career mode. Also I want to be able to transfer ownership of a plane between companies. One of big down sides of career mode is you feel like an employee even when you own and pay for all of it. I want liability in sim to make my free flight have more meaning. In 2020 I have been flying the beech 18 around world, went from West Coast USA to Sidney Australia in like 60 one to 4 hour flights. I am running the denarq realism mod on the engines, and it makes flights matter more because I can't over boost, ignore temps, ignore startup. If I do not manage my systems I end up with one engine over water with an iced carb and more excitement than is associated with flightsim. Ended up in drink more than once flying the plane. Now days a boring flight is a pay off because I learned the systems to make it so. I know Microsoft is squeamish about crashing planes, but career mode has helped me become better, now that I have to pay for every bad landing.

Another Xbox flyer here still enjoying A2A and MSFS 2020. I was lucky to get a quick refund on my 24 pre-order. I spent the money on some Turtle Beach gear to fully enjoy my GA experience. I'll check out MSFS2024 perhaps Q2/Q3 of 2025. I have no need of a career mode..

I think your assessment is perfect. Even with all bugs and stutters ironed out, I dislike the gamification direction they have taken. Took me ages to finely tune 2020 and it’s perfect now - why go thru it all over again to ultimately gain 20% better GFX and some other minor gains? I am learning for my PPL, 2020 is good for me. XPlane should be watching from the sidelines right now and bring out a new XPlane aimed solely at pilots / serious simmers. Then watch the exodus, leaving 2024 as a high end gaming experience.

I agree with you. I installed MSFS2024 on release date and unistalled after 30 minutes more or less. I was very interested on Career Mode but I realized it is really stupid and unreal. NeoFly or OnAir are by far very best choices. I'm interested in a "simulator game" as XPLane o MSFS2020 allowing me to free flights and to run good addons, but MSF2024, also allowing free flights, is more similar to an old arcade game, with no compatibility right now with my addons. Perhaps better graphics but because of cloud based dessign instead of local storage and lots of bugs MSFS204 is far away to be considered a good simulator. I'll keep using MSFS2020 and XPLane 12, I think, for a very long time.

I have 2024 on Xbox however, if you were dumb enough to pay cash for this game, then you have to be a fool, this game is broken in so many ways despite it’s beautiful graphics, you paid up to $200 in some cases to be a guinea pig or a beta tester. Congratulations, this is a poor return on investment as far as a game, given about two more years it might be finished.

The minute the UI open you know this is a game based on consoles. They’ve made a console simulator, confirmed by the streaming of all data. They did not make 2024 with simulation in mind. It’s simply a game. I am hugely disappointed with this release, not only about the gamey aspect. This feels totally wrong as a sim. They could have made career mode something like Neofly, where it feels like it’s worth doing jobs. It is just a grind fest.
