I switched from Computer Eng to Computer Sci midway because CS offered so many fun electives that the other didn't. Artificial Intelligence, Databases, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Blockchains, Data Mining, Mobile Dev, VideoGame Dev, etc. I chose CompEng first because I wanted the title of "Engineer". But if at the end I'm gonna work in the same software engineering role, then who the fuck cares about the degree. I'm having fun with my classes, and when I get hired in that software engineering role I can call myself an engineer if I want to.

Hi, in my country we only have two universities with the computer science major (it´s not well known here). Here Software Engineering (known as systems and coumputing engineering) is more focused to repair computers becasue most of the graduate people don´t know programming and last years of the major are focused on business engineering, IT for companies. The most common job after graduation is work for a traditional company in the maintenance of systems, computers, networks, and sometimes programming (if you have the skill) it is a well paid job.

I think software engineering should be a specialization, not a undergrad. Firstly, Most companies have their way of developing software, so what matters is experience, not much what you learn reading a book (in regards to software development). Second, in SE you take classes that are useless in IT jobs, like chemistry and physics for engineers, but those classes are the one that give you the engineer status lol. A proof that you may learn software development processes without needing an SE degree is that there lots of self taugjt coders that work as sofrware engineers that complain only about not having CS knowledge and how it makes them have a harder time on their jobs, but ive never seen a self taught coder or someone with a CS degree complaining that they dont understand software development processes. And last, saying a SE is more complete than a CS grad, is like saying taking a Medical specialization without going through a normal medical grad is" better" as it focuses more in practical stuff. Doesnt make much sense. SE will give you the engineer status but beyond the fact that it literally makes you practice more coding and that, i see no advantage in taking it over CS. Plus, you can practice coding by yourself on CS, but as that takes the responsiblity factor into consideration, ppl are usually afraid of that lol.

I would not consider chemistry and physics as useless since it may not be relevant to software engineering but it would help develop your problem solving skills.

Most colleges don’t even offer an “software engineering degree.” I always thought of those majors as like more of a certificate. I’m about to finish up community college getting an associates in computer science and where I plan on transferring they have a Computer Science degree with game development track, cyber security track, or data science track. You can specialize in something. I always viewed software engineering as one of these track options.

Probably a bit late on the topic, I agree on the general idea, they will both land you that job you want... IF you are ok with spending that extra effort! If you don't want to put that extra effort you are not going anywhere... regardless of the path... I am a Software Engineer, graduated bachelor and master in software engineering, and at least in my university was not like you said about being assessed on "how much knowledge" you were able to retain... In my case what make me happy to have followed the engineering part is that they were assessing my ability to deal with problems and design solutions... no matter the technology, no matter the topic. I like coding, I like technology but what I like the most is solve problems, and I think that engineering stress you out about that capacity. The extra effort needed there is about being more sharp on actual technology and coding... About being an engineer vs just a software developer? Nahh companies don't care, the world does not care! you need to choose looking at what you mainly like to do!

I am currently studying Communication Eng (a branch of computer system eng), but I am considered switching to CS. I have googled a lot about this and found that the job field I am interested in can be getting into by both degree. Like you and many comments said, studying Eng took more time to study in both my daily life and in school credits. I had to take several courses that involved heavy calculations. While I don’t hate calculation or maybe even like it, If I am being honest I am not that good in math. I mean I can do it if I put lots of effort and time, but while should I do that when I can get into the field of work without having to focus on that or maybe less on that and more time to do something else such as gaining experience on actually coding something. Right now my hands are tided by those unnecessary stuff that I am not that good at it to the point that I might not even need if I switch to CS. Now I am kind of in crisis thinking and making decision. Your video had actually acknowledge that the major different is getting Eng titles vs more flexible electives and more free time to do so and shorter time required to spend on studying. Seems like the pro out weight the con. I honestly don’t know which one would be less interesting but the more flexibility and shorter time requirements seems to outweight the cons. I just hope that once I have switched I don’t end up regretting it because it turns out to be more boring or more difficult. I don’t usually afraid of difficulty, but I this time I want to make a smarter move before I actually spend more time there struggling and failing lots of courses to the point that it feel like a waste of time if I still keep pushing through Eng when there is a smarter alternative to switch to early on.

@discreteloner9573
@discreteloner9573 2 жыл бұрын
@@RA-xx1qq I have sent the transfered application and still waiting for their decision. It will take a while (weeks). I have checked with the university that once they accept me, I still have a chance to either accept it and change to CS or stay in ENG. I guess I still have some times to think. I am leaning toward switching due to the pros that I have a chance to graduate faster and still get into the same career field. I have some personal urgency and uncertainty that time advantage can make a different. With heavy calculation courses, I am not sure I would be able to pass them without having to re-take them more than once. That would slow down my graduating time.

@bluezone3
@bluezone3 4 жыл бұрын
Nice video but you are forgetting one major difference between the two programs. Since software engineering is more strictly accredited, every class that a software engineer takes has to be taught by a licensed engineer. This might sound like an advantage, but in reality it can cause minor catastrophes. Since there are only so many licensed engineers who are professors, many software classes are only offered ONCE per year. These classes are also pre-requisites for other required software engineering courses. This means if you cannot complete a class for any reason including: falling sick, failing, falling behind etc... you are at a high risk of delaying you graduation by an entire year since you will not be able to take the required software engineering classes that require that course as a pre-requisite. You will need to wait an entire year for that class to be offered again so that you can retake it. In fact, this is what caused me to change program. I have chronic health problems and Software engineering was not flexible enough for my situation. All the extra material from the software engineering program can be learned on the job whenever you need it - and you will be compensated while you learn it.
@arodcodes199
@arodcodes199 2 жыл бұрын
This is definitely not true. SE is not "more strictly accredited", as you say. There is accredited (usually through ABET) and there is unaccredited. If you take a CS degree that is accredited through ABET then the standards are going to be relatively the same. Most of the teachers are going to be the same and tbh lots of the classes are going to be the same. The only difference is that since CS a lot more focused on the theoretical mathematical and scientific side of computation and sets you up to likely get a job in research or academia. As opposed to SE which will prepare to go into an engineering position in the development industry right away. Most CS grads take so many mathematics classes they pick up math minors. While there are a lot of schools offering CS which may not be accredited. If you pursue a degree in CS from an accredited university it is going to be located in the engineering college and be just as rigorous if not more than SE. A lot more people have a problem with a more abstract mathematical degree like CS which is essentially a theoretical, scientific, and computational mathematics degree opposed to the more practical SE degree.

Tbh, if you know you want a job doing higher level coding, CS is the better route rather than wasting time with physics and more calculus in an engineering degree as you get more time to practice what you actually need for the job and interview, which is CODING (algorithms & data structures) and relevant project experience. If you wanna program hardware or design systems, then the engineering route is probably your better bet.

Honestly the difference is too small to bother about. Just look at the degree and pick the one that offers the classes you want to take. I went with software engineering because, at my school, it 1. offers a few more elective credits for me to 'specialize' and 2. the senior capstone for SE is team project. For CS it is a bachelors thesis, and I feel as tho a project will give me more to show for when applying for a job. Ultimately, just find the classes you want to take and pick which ever one lets to take them.

Well, in my country, Bangladesh, "Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)" has turned to be one of the most common undergrad program in almost all universities. Which apparently solves the problem of not being called an engineer 😁😁😁
