WHY I WILL NEVER PUT MY T1D CHILD ON A DIET

Restrictive low carb diets are not healthy for anyone. Toddlers and children actually need carbs for their developing brains.
If you choose to manage your T1D or your child’s T1D differently than I do, that’s fine. Choosing alternatives for certain ingredients or choosing low sugar snacks and treats, all good.
I’m more or less explaining why restricting your toddler or young kid’s diet at a young age has detrimental consequences for their future.
Eating shouldn’t be scary or stressful. Learning how what you eat affects your blood sugars and how to use insulin effectively is a much better option than to never giving your child treats.
Let them be kids and enjoy a donut! And not a low carb one either! 😉

I think if a child eats their general nutritious foods, you can let her have treats for when she's low, because she needs that sugar for the hypo, but not for general anytime consumption, if any, a small portion with a meal so you can count it into the meal bolus. That way she can have her treats. The best way is to use fruits or other foods to bring the sugars out of hypo, but if she enjoys a treat, let her have it when she needs it so in that way the treat is helping her. All suitable treats she receives at parties or as a gift she can store and she can use when low or after eating a meal and a sufficient bolus was administered. She doesnt buy the groceries, the parent does. Everyone in the home should eat the same, all in moderation.

Why do you think she needs sugar and donuts when her blood sugar is low? That's a ridiculous belief. She could eat whole fruit and stabilise the blood sugar with protein and fat to stop it plummeting in the first place. Never any need for fake refined food.

My son was diagnosed as an adult at 23. I cried because every TD1 person I’ve know died at 30! I watched him go from real healthy to a young man that looked 70! He was compliant and couldn’t get control of his glucose levels. He was diagnosed as a brittle TD1. In August on 2023 he had an A1C 5.4! He was on the new Tandem pump which changed his life. He was finally on a good road and on 9/5/2023 he unexpectedly passed away at 30 years old leaving behind 2 beautiful children and a devastated family! He didn’t die from TD1 exactly but from complications of TD1! My life has changed forever! I hate seeing a baby battle TD1! It’s frustrating when every one assumes that it is exactly the same as TD1! I watch my grand babies like a hawk for any signs of T1D. I miss him so much😢!

I love how you involve your daughter in her health and the process of changing her pod. I know it’s not easy so I want to encourage you. As a physician who takes care of many diabetics, I couldn’t help but inform you that not adhering to a healthy diet is harming your daughter’s health in the long run. Hyperglycemia causes the complications from diabetes. Thus, diabetics need to avoid hyperglycemia at all costs. Yes, you can give insulin and it can lower the glucose, but the damage is already being done if she is frequently hyperglycemic. Also, insulin contributes towards weight gain so you want to improve her diet so she will need less insulin. Also, diabetes aside, an unhealthy diet increases inflammation, reduces her ability to fight infection, and sets her up to develop heart disease, stroke, and other autoimmune conditions later on. Every human who wants to live a full life should adopt a healthy diet which is a diet low in added sugars and processed foods, and high in plant based foods. Be blessed! ❤🙏🏽

Damn, this comment section is full of food shaming. I love your message. Like you said, rates of eating disorders are way too high in general. Unfortunately, they are even higher in t1d adolescents and young adults than their otherwise healthy peers. Eating disorders associated with t1d are also harder to treat and have higher rates of long term consequences. To a certain degree, with t1d food has to be seen as fuel and numbers, so any way to avoid exacerbating that is great. Yes, we all know more simple carb intake can cause blood sugars to spike. However, there are ways to mitigate that risk without outright food shaming or intense restriction like many are suggesting. Maybe she’s using the doordash tracking info to pre-dose Addie’s insulin shortly before they arrive, so she can start eating once they arrive (not that she’d let you guys wait one extra second, let alone the recommended 15 extra minutes anyway). Perhaps she’s also giving Addie a pre-donut snack with things like protein and fiber (peanut butter is a gift in this regard) to help lengthen the digestion of the sugary donut. TLDR: having donuts and having good diabetes control aren’t mutually exclusive. This momma’s just doing the best she can out here, so let’s chill out.

Exactly. NOBODY should be eating donuts. The worlds health is critically terrible because of people eating donuts. DO BETTER. ....And no, it's very difficult to control a T1 diabetics blood sugar when they consume donuts. That is why addies blood sugar frequently goes in the 300's. @@JH-nb4nn A single donut, or even a few donuts occasionally, will not significantly increase those risks. However, y'know what makes someone more likely to eat a lot of donuts any chance they get? Demonization and restriction. The well meaning restriction often has the opposite of the intended effect... with a side effect of some mental health issues surrounding food. Yes, the world would be better if we had never created donuts, but that's not the world we live in. We have to do what's best according to the data, and it shows that giving a child a varied diet where food is treated neutrally is best at leading to physically and mentally healthy long-term habits. Also, saying Addie's blood sugar spikes and dips exclusively because of donuts is intensely misrepresenting their lifestyle. Her mom shows so many videos where dexcom tells her Addie's blood sugar is high and then she finds Addie eating. Addie is a toddler who does not yet understand her care or the signals her body gives her. She will in time and her mom is planting those seeds. Lows are far more dangerous than highs at this age, that is why diabetic kids' target ranges are higher than their adult counterparts. Nutrition is complicated; Nutrition for kids is more complicated; and, nutritions for kids with chronic illness is even harder. Complex problems have complex solutions. Demonizing donuts is just insulting.

You people just don't eat want to eat like a human being. You eat like you are a trash can and so you will get trash can results. Make all the excuses you want. You get what you eat for. Lows are dangerous momentarily, highs are dangerous long term. One is not more dangerous than the other. Just another lame pathetic excuse to treat every low with juice and donuts, instead of preventing the low and actually learning human nutrition. Cheers.@@Jilly_Neutron

As long as her blood sugar levels and A1C is ok, that's all that matters. I was diagnosed with diabetes at 20, now I'm 23)(the doctors still won't tell me which one but after doing research on T1D, I think it's T1). They just gave me some papers which barely let me know anything bout diabetes, it was basically like looking at another language for me, aka I didn't understand it. Still trying to grasp what A1C is cause they literally didn't teach me anything and want to keep switching the insulin ratio stuff and it's just annoying. For me, I'm thinking I might be insulin resistance and need a more concentrated insulin because it doesn't matter if I'm not eating or what I eat, I could not eat or eat "good food" like a salad, barely any dressing, and it still goes too high and takes forever to come back down to normal. But yeah, don't let people tell you how to manage your kiddo's diabetes, that's between you and the doctor/s. Plus, she's a kid, telling kids that they can't have a donut or a cupcake, or what not, is easier said than done.

For example, after bariatric surgery, patients required an 86% post-operative reduction in their total daily dose of insulin within two days of surgery. That's according to a study by the Cleveland Clinic. Studies suggest no insulin is needed at the one year point. Can we then say that diabetes could be a lifestyle disease in some number of cases? Could we also say that humans can do very well on protein and fats only, as shown by the Masai in Africa and the Inuit in Canada? And is it possible that your doctor's nutrition education was influenced by Big Pharma that makes money off insulin? Chronic illness pays big. If the Standard American Diet (SAD) is effective, then why are Americans obese, sick, with longevity declining? Carnivore diet is gaining traction for helping people restore their health. Just cutting out "added sugars" has a huge impact. There are many educational videos done by enlightened doctors here on KZbin. Managing this as an adult is work. Managing it for kids is more work. This comes from someone who has family members with severe autoimmune disorders, both dietary (Celiac Disease, Diabetes Type I and 2, Crohn's, etc), and neurological (Multiple Sclerosis). Once someone is diagnosed with a condition like diabetes, or Celiac, you have to change their diet to accommodate their condition. In the case of Diabetes, you have to mediate the amount of glucose spikes, and falls occur. This means moderating the intake of high amounts of processed carbs, like sugars and corn syrup, and eating diets that are more balanced with proteins, healthy lipids (fats), and fiber. I imagine diabetes, living with my mom, who has Type II diabetes, as being on an ocean during a storm. Any abnormally high peak of glucose is like a rogue wave, where drops are like a rogue hole; the more often these "spikes" occur, the less seafaring your vessel may become overtime. Since diabetics have a more difficult time correcting their "vessel" during these rogue waves/holes, the more likely their ship may capsize or be damaged further. Unfortunately, your child has T1D, which means she was born without the ability to produce enough insulin for her to process sugar. Neglecting to feed her a diet that is balanced, and prevents massice blood glucose spikes/crashes, is going to potentially lead to more damage to the pancreas with time. The consequences of this range from strokes, limb amputations, uncontrollable infections, diabetic retinopathy, neuropathy, stroke and heart disease. All things, that as a parent, you'd wish your kid to not suffer with. I'm not a medical professional, but having family members who didn't control their diabetes, the effects are horrendous. I had an uncle who's legs got so black, and necrotic, from uncontrolled blood sugar, that both were amputated. He eventually died from still not controlling it. My grandmother died from a severe bout of ketoacidosis, which led to her getting severe brain damage from hypoxia, which she eventually succumbed to. Even though my mom is great at controlling her diabetes, she nearly died after a gallbladder surgery, due to her blood sugar suddenly dropping. TL;DR: Autoimmune disorders are serious, especially ones that are dietary. It is your job as a mother to protect, and care for the well-being of your children, especially ones with special needs. Feeding a T1D child a diet of donuts, junk food, and high sugar is putting them down the road to misery. It's okay to every once and while, indulge; it's different when it's a close to an every day occurance. Three carrots, some veggies, some chicken nuggets, and candy, are not a balanced diet, as you state you feed your kids in this video. Either you buck up and be a parent, or you hand off your kid to a family member, friend or parent who can. Making excuses about "an eating disorder" is a lazy, imbecilic and narcissitic way to justify depriving your child a healthier, less tumultuous future. Stop being a selfish, egotistical blob, and actually be a mother for your child!

When my son was diagnosed with T1D at 13, insulin pumps were just being introduced. I didn't trust it at the time, being new to the market. Carb counting and keeping his blood sugar within the right range was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. Now, at 36, he still has no pump (his choice), and his numbers are excellent. But looking back, the times he would sit and watch other kids eat all they wanted, while I'm counting carbs and insulin units, just seemed almost cruel. As long as her A1C level stays within range, I can see your point.

It doesn’t have to be “shame” to limit unhealthy food. There are clean foods and there are processed, sugar and chemical-filled foods that do cause chronic disease and a host of other problems. It literally makes you feel bad when you eat it. But you do you… I hope your baby grows up to be healthy, happy and strong.

Its not a matter of low carb. Diabetic here. Its a matter of slow burning carbs that dont spike my blood sugar. No gluten, no potatoes, nothing with more than 13 grams of sugar. Corn, rice, and oats are ok in moderation. It takes time to find good replacements. In order for me to have a long happy life and not do damage to my organs that are at greater risk because i am a diabetic. My dad died from diabetes, young, 56, my moms mom died from diabetes too but she lived much longer, even on dialysis, because she ate healthy.

@@poppyperidot94 a diabetic being poisoned by sugar does not vary. It's the type of carb you eat. As stated above. Not all carbs are created equal. Careful stating facts to this grifter who doesn't care that 80% of the fake supporters, aren't here to support, but to be a voyeur of her lil girl 🤢 First of many many red flags. "I had an eating disorder as a teen and I don't want to pass it on to my kids"...... Proceeds to not manage her toddlers diet and is creating an arguably worse eating disorder, in the opposite direction, thinking she's doing good. If that kid's doctor saw this video and didn't give this lady a wake up call he's basically enabling this child's infinite suffering. If there aren't 8 or more people eating that box of donuts in that day, you're basically poisoning your diabetic child at that point. The number one way to control type 1 is through diet so her little diet rant is very revealing of her actual motives in life. After watching a few videos and seeing the moms attitude about life, it's pretty obvious that under the guise of being a loving parent she has monetized her kid's childhood and induced pain and suffering all because it's okay if you pretend like it's for some sort of SaintHood advocacy. We're truly living in the "my child must have a disease and be on the spectrum so that I can gain popularity and attention" timeline. I watched my best friend's Grandpa who died as an octogenarian with type 1 diabetes struggle infinitely to the point where he essentially had so much scar tissue from injecting since being a toddler that his stomach almost had a band of scar tissue all the way around. Medical issues being monetized while taxpayers subsidize the cost of other people's poor life choices should be illegal. This kid is definitely on the equivalent of that states medical welfare and will probably be on it for her entire life because this Mom is not teaching anything but the more problems you cause through bad decisions...the more attention you receive and the less you have to do. I'm just really disappointed in my parents raising me to handle my s*** and not be dependent on others and handouts. It has truly made life in post-millennial America feel like the only people who get rewarded are those who don't deserve it and the people who get the most opportunities and infinite patience from employers and other institutions are the ones who constantly take no responsibility for their horrible decisions. Like right now, I can't afford food(I bet that was $100 worth of donuts ffs!) and it's never even crossed my mind to go to a food bank because no matter how poor we were, you don't leech off of the government. Don't be like me. Take advantage of every single thing you possibly can in life and do not care about whether it is fair to others. Because absolutely none of those other people are thinking about if it's fair if they drink your milkshake, and tell you that you're a "bigoted istiphob" for pointing out they also took half your fries! I'll never understand how people like this don't realize they need to blur the kids face. This kid is going to have her entire life on KZbin and tick tock for the rest of time all because her mommy wanted attention. I can't wait to meet the generation whose parents sold them online for attention and money when they become teenagers and see just how much their innocence was violated by the person who was supposed to protect them the most. This munchausen's by proxy thing is getting way out of hand now that there's money to be made along with the attention and sympathy. She probably has diabetes, but there's no incentive to make her actually healthy when there's attention and money to be made! Have a great life!

Some of the comments are just mean. It’s so easy for everyone to judge another person behind a keyboard. No one lives in her house to know how the family eats or lives let alone parent someone else kids. Addie is a kid as she get older and has more understanding of T1d. In most cases when a T1D blood sugar is extremely low will eat or drink something sweet. I definitely agree that being mean is unnecessary and waste of time yet I do think it would be super helpful for any caregiver of a T1D to know healthy ways to cope with highs and lows. My daughter was diagnosed at 7 months and luckily I have been somewhat educated on T1D because my husband is also diabetic..anyway I have been doing my best to avoid going to simple sugars or low nutrient carbs to help with my baby’s lows. Our method is to set her pump to alarm when sugar is below 100 so I have time to get her a fruit or milk or something more natural and nutrient dense food that can both help her sugar and help her grow. I have done my best to avoid giving my baby juice because it’s a very fine line before it creates a yo-yo effect with her sugar..resulting in an insulin correction after a low…😵‍💫 Anyway..not to be a critic but it would be amazing to see a channel that can help educate good nutrition vs just venting about “no diets” period…I too have had an ED for over a decade(now recovered) and I want to educate my child on healthy relationship with food..but balance is key..not just letting kids eat anything they want.

@@JH-nb4nn again there’s a right way to point out to another an alternative to have a high sugar donut with a sub that’s healthier options without coming off rude, mean and a busy body basically a nasty bitchy Karan. because everyone parents differently especially when your toddler is diagnosed with a life threatening disease where they will have to spend the rest of their lives pricking their fingers to check their blood sugar. Having to spend time and worrying about if their blood sugar drops and needing a high sugar candy or juice to raise their sugar back to a normal level. Or having to take insulin to correct their high blood. TD1 means the pancreas is no longer able naturally produce insulin to our bodies. Thing is TD1 is a life long disease where TD2 is self causing through poor eating habits. My friend has been living with TD1 his whole life. He has to check his blood sugar before he eats so he knows how much insulin his omipod delivers. Having low blood glucose is dangerous for a TD1.

Good job! It is harder, but healthier as a whole I think. It is harder, and yes, on a diabetic standpoint it might be better to restrict carbs, but Addie isn't a diabetes, she is a little girl WITH diabetes, and as such, her whole health matters, not just her pancreas'. Eating disorders are devastating, and not just that but also, quality of life matters, and I strongly believe that sometimes, when weighing the pros and cons, sometimes the "healthier" option isn't the best one. Sometimes, enjoying the moment is as important as which micronutrients and how many carbs you're putting in your body. Considering health as a whole takes that in consideration, and it doesn't mean that it is a lesser option, and it doesn't mean to feed crap every minute of the day and ki11 your child like some people are saying, it just means that you want them to be able to enjoy the life they are given, and that you value their health and their happiness equally. I love your approach.❤

At least teach your diabetic child which foods can raise their blood sugar and might make them feel bad. Give them the knowledge they deserve to make the decisions about the foods they put in their body. You don’t have to say foods are bad but at least tell her so when she’s an adult she doesn’t kill herself with the inability to limit sugars. Finding out breads and all the yummy carb loaded foods destroy you as an adult is much more overwhelming than solidifying that idea as a kid that you can have carbs and sweets but you have to be more careful because your body needs help processing it more than others.

Judging by appearance, food seems to be an issue that turned into addiction for you. Don't subject ur child to that way of life just because it's how you lived. She's gunna end up being the same size as you, which could ruin her self-esteem and the way she views herself. She has no control over her weight right now. Only you do. So you'd think it'd be extremely important to put her needs before her wants. Just because she has insulin doesn't mean you should feed her whatever she wants... heck, even the other kids should eat better regardless of not being diabetic.

“There’s no bad foods.” Someone please call CPS. As someone with diabetes, this is how you send your daughter to an early grave. She should be on a special diet because every diabetic should be to keep your organs/body running the best it can. Doesn’t mean she can’t have a treat every now and then, but letting her eat however she wants is f’d up. You make money off your daughter’s illness. Every time these videos pop up on my page, I feel nothing but sadness for the daughter. As someone who knows how awful and draining and low blood sugar can feel, I can’t imagine someone waking me up in the middle of the night with a phone in my face, with the flashlight on, going “drink your juice honey your bs is low.” Behind the scenes, ‘Hold on, sip it again, I missed that shot. Let’s do it from this angle. Okay say this. 3, 2, 1, go.’ Low BS can be a scary anxiety provoking feeling. Shame on you for trying to profit off your daughter’s lifestyle.

This doesn't compute. I manage my pets' diets for kidney failure, food allergies, nutrition, etc. I'm thinking I'd protect a child from gluten. Why not protect from carbs? This is a chance to educate the child. Autistic kids learn to restrict their diets for better emotional moderation. I wonder if you get a lot of attention from your daughter's illness and the controversy you generate. Munchausen syndrome? Her welfare is not put above yours.

I'm not sure if you understand what T1D is. Her daughter relies on external insulin for her cells to use the glucose her body makes. ALL food outside of 100% lean meat will cause her blood sugars to spike. Whether she's eating a bagel or yogurt or an apple or broccoli. She will need external insulin to keep her blood sugars in check. She needs sugary food/drinks for low blood sugar as well. There are so many things that go into caring for a little one with T1D that absolutely do not include avoiding sweets. She's not allergic to sugar.
@captdawn

@@vixen_0072 What I understand is that these twins can't manage their blood sugar. We've had insulin since 1922, and diabetics still today go blind, get wounds that won't heal, have limbs amputated, go into comas and die before normal life expectancy. The big spikes in blood sugar still happen and still damage the organs! Big Pharma is not the perfect answer here. Self-management is. Would the mother of a kid with severe peanut allergies honor her kid's request for a PB&J sandwich for his bag lunch, just hoping the school nurse can arrest the anaphylaxis in time? Wait! Maybe that mom needs video of the EMT drama to earn $$? And so she sacrifices her kids? That's Munchausen Syndrome to a T. T1D! Totally unmanaged by a lazy, self-serving mother who leaves an Ubered box of doughnuts within reach of kids who don't understand the consequences. And all the medical intervention is subsidized by taxpayers. CPS should get involved. Yes, it's hard but lots of parents step up and do the hard things because they are in the beloved child's best interests. This mother is pitifully ignorant.

Spot on. She's going to have serious issues later on with her trash diet. Huge amounts of insulin is what damages the body in the first place... which is what they pump into her in huge amounts every time the carbs escalate the blood sugar. It's a disgrace.
