First time dad here and i was watching videos like this when my son was 12-17 months old! he was a very picky eater, anything new that he would "try" he would spit it right out! i was very worried and over thinking things ! im here to tell you not to worry and as long as he is eating something even if its the same thing over and over again and its still gaining weight theyll be fine. my son as soon as he turned 18 months old he turn into a vacuum, he is 26 months olds and eats and eats none stop! he even eats my food. hope this can give you some type of comfort, everything will be fine!

That’s great to hear, our two year old is still picky…which is fine. I just wish his father wouldn’t yell at him about eating it doesn’t help if anything does the opposite. He eats just fine with me I let him do it himself until he needs assistance. I try to feed him snacks throughout the day, he likes chips and candy way too much so I give him grapes or seaweed which he loves and will eat the whole packet of. Hopefully we can work together better soon ❤ (he got introduced to candy by other family members at a young age, we were actually going to wait until he’s older to give him that, but what are in laws for)

Actually the last point is very true and I've personally experienced this.. My husband likes and eats only some specific dishes.. He doesn't like to explore or adjust with the new taste or infact new veggies if offered to him on a plate.. This made me really upset during the first year of my marriage.. When I talked to my mom in law about this, she told me that she used to make only those dishes which he liked and would eat happily.. even if something else is made at home, she would definitely make one dish out of his favourites so that he can eat without fuss.. This practice of her has made him a picky eater and now he's trying hard to adjust..

Totally experienced this with my nieces and nephews.... they're 15, 13, and 9 now and my mother in law STILL has to make boiled hot dogs and buttered noodles for every holiday meal because they won't eat. It's really ridiculous. We will be working hard so our little guy isn't like that! Edit: We aren't eating anything a kid wouldn't "normally" like either. Like 4th of July instead of hamburgers they all demanded buttered noodles. 😐

Maybe it's just my toddler, but I've actually found the opposite effect for some of these don'ts. Yesterday she had a meltdown because she didn't want to eat her lentils. Today, I mixed them in with her rice and some cream cheese, not to hide the lentils as much as to make the texture more palatable for her and to make it more similar to a lentil barley mock risotto that I know she likes. It didn't quite work, although she didn't have a meltdown. But then when I started eating my cucumbers, she wanted some and I asked her to eat some rice. Then she said, "then cucumbers" and i said Ok. We finished rhe cucumbers and she still had some rice so I cut up some cherry tomatoes and said "let's try it some rice with tomatoes- is it yummy?" She said yes and then continued to eat her tomatoes and lentil/rice/cream cheese together without issue. So...? Maybe it's in the approach? Or maybe my kid is just more flexible

Thanks for the tips! I am guilty of hiding veg in foods like in a homemade sauce and my toddler loves to eat it but if I offer these vegetables as they are he often won’t eat them. I don’t ever force it and keep putting them on plate. Hopefully will work one day 😃 Sounds like I also might be giving him too much milk late on in the day…

Hi @Gracey Blossom | UK Mum Life thanks so much for sharing! I just wanted to clarify hiding food in other food. If your little one likes the homemade sauce and it has always included the vegetables then that is fine. This is because you have not changed original recipe of the homemade sauce. But if you suddenly changed the homemade sauce recipe to include vegetables (when it didn't before) then you run the risk of your little one refusing to eat it when he notices the difference. Does that make sense?

Hi @Nozipho Nikuna thanks for the suggestion! I find at 9 month bubs often want to feed themselves. So if you haven't ready it might be worth trying safe finger food. Also it might be worth thinking of the time that you are offering your little one solids. If it is after a breastfeed then it is likely your little one would not be hungry. You could try having solids before the breast feed and see if that has any impact.

Hi Emma, my 1yo has had a tough few weeks. first she had a stomach bug, then covid, and then again a stomach bug. Now she doesn't want to eat anymore. She's back to mainly breastfeeding. She drinks a bit of water sometimes or a piece of a dry baby snack. She wasn't a fussy eater before. Now she even refuses sweet purees. I'm afraid she forgot how to eat a proper meal. Should I expect for her appetite to reappear slowly? She's totally fine otherwise..talking, trying to walk. We were at the pediatrician every time she was ill so her health is well monitored.

I have been through the same situation with my little girl.. when she's Teething she just stops eating solids all of a sudden, no matter what I give her & is only happy Breastfeeding. She is a happy baby otherwise hitting all her milestones but I was a bit worried with her not eating anything else other than breastmilk but after a week or so she's back to eating her solids again. I think they go through this phase sometimes when they are unwell, Teething or other reasons.

I have always loved your content! My 19 month old has a very broad food preference. He loves fresh fruits, vegetables and meat. But it's a task to get him to eat. A lot of times he just refuses food even when he likes it, and is hungry. I realise that we have been using distraction and grazing quite often. Actually our meal times are now on the floor with a mat placed (for easier cleaning), but his toys are just close by. After watching this video, am just wondering should we change that? Because a lot of times he is playing while we feed him.

Great video! Very helpful info. My 18 month old baby girl eats very little & it has concerned me, although her pediatrician says it's normal & she's healthy. The unusual thing about it is that she's not the typical picky eater described in this video. For example, you stated that a toddler may need to see a new food between 10 - 20 times before they will actually eat it... My little one is the opposite. She seems to only be interested in eating foods that are new to her & then she becames uninterested & doesn't want to eat that food until it's been long enough to where it's new to her again. She doesn't have a favorite food that she always will eat like most toddlers & kids do. So I guess it's like she's not necessarily picky, but just has a small appetite maybe? Bc she will try most foods but eat VERY little at a time. Do you have any thoughts or advice? thanks so much!

Great video as always Emma!! 👍 I just realized my little one doesn't like to eat when we are out on vacation. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ We went on our first vacation as a family last week with our 14 month old and she just refused to eat.. she didn't any solids no matter what I gave her or how hard we tried. She just had breastmilk and nothing else.. she was really active, happy & walking when we were out. She enjoyed the vacation and the change in scenery except for eating. We are back home now and she's eating again. Is this normal for them to not eat anything when we take them to other places. Out of their comfort zone?
@rizahawkeyepierce1380
@rizahawkeyepierce1380 Жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert, but it seems normal to me - a child experiencing a lot of new stuff at once (new sights, sounds, smells, sleeping in a new place, etc.) might make them want at least one thing to be familiar and comforting. Like if you went to a country where everything was different, they didn't speak your language, their customs were different, etc., you might find yourself craving a hamburger or something because you want something familiar.

All good tips, hopefully it will click one day with our toddler. So far it looks like our 18m toddler has a different plan lol For instance, we keep presenting carrots, green beans and such every week and she still won't grab them, let alone eat them (Correction, she might grab them occasionally just to move them away from her plate). Is been a few months like this already. Unfortunately, when you start noticing your toddler losing or not gaining any weight (From 60 percentile to 30 percentile in the last 4 months) you start to worry and not falling into this "traps" becomes harder and harder and is just a vicious cycle, you start questioning everything. Oh well, maybe we have the pickiest eater of all the picky eaters. Who knows *shrugs*

Hi Emma I am conflicted with all the information out there about a toddlers energy needs. I have read numerous times that they need to have minimum 1000 calories a day. This makes me so anxious as my 16 month old hardly eats 500 calories a day. This results me in force feeding her. So many people comment saying that she appears to have lost weight. Honestly its easier to say don't make these mistakes, but what is the solution when they just want to survive on water and air days on end?

It might be counterproductive now with these new kids but it worked with me, if I didn't eat something my parents would just calmly take the food and NOT GIVE ME ANYTHING ELSE IN THAT MOMENT. I would have to wait for the next meal WHEN I WILL ACTUALLY BE HUNGRY AS HELL. And there will be no leftover food on the plate then. And no juice or snacks too. Hello! Do You have an advise how to get out of the situation when my baby is already afraid of food? When he sees or smells any food he is starting to cough and try to empty his stomach even if he is hungry. :( he is 1,5 years, he eats only when I feed him and only with distraction. He is a bit skinny, when I feed him, he may eat good about 1/3 of the meal ( 50g of food) but not always. I try to feed him at least 200g

Does he like any food? If he does like some food then you might find it helpful watching the video I made on the learning plate:kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZeXnH6ci5Vjj80 If he doesn't like any food and starts coughing and trying to empty his stomach on seeing or smelling food then it would be good to check in with a paediatric feeding specialist (speech pathologist or occupational therapist) who can give you specific advice.

I thought I had a picky eater until I found out my baby just didn’t wanna be fed by spoon and eat purées or mashed food anymore. So when I give him solids, let him feed himself or I feed him using my hands, he just eats his food voluntarily. No fuss at all unless he’s already full.

If it's really important, surely,like with pets, you would use a preferred food for this?

I'm a little contused because on your other video it says to try dips and spreads but here it says to not hide it in anything so they can explore the natural taste. Which should i do? He will only eat applesauce and yogurt 😢
@EmmaHubbard

With sauces and dips, give them the food and the sauce separately and allow them to dip the food in the sauce/dip themselves. You’re not hiding food they hate in sauces/dips. Hope that helps 🙂

I always used to say, that healthy children will not starve if there is food supplied to them and hunger is the best spice. I find it not harmful if a child goes hungry for some time (when food is offered). When hungry enough, they become much more adventurous with food. When parents are always nagging to eat, I can understand how a child can feel a need to resist. Eating is natural. Healthy childen will eat without nagging. They might skip one meal occasionally, but that will only make them eat better when the next meal comes. And I mean this not in a negative, ruthless way, but in a lighthearted way - let them find their and experience their hunger and understand their needs. And of course such approach doesn't suit for kids with mental or somatic health problems.

Our current struggle is my daughter (13 months in a couple days) is obsessed with feeding her food to me. Although she is hungry, although she asked for food. Like if I leave the room and she is with dad, she eats. If I sit with my back turned to her, she eats. But as soon as I turn around to look at her, she takes some food and throws her hand in my direction "da, da, da!" until I let her put it into my mouth. If I don't let her feed me, she gets really offended and projectile throws it through the kitchen. Sometimes because of this she stops eating before she even started properly, but if we take her down from the chair, she cries and motions to get back on the chair. Anyone else made a similar experience? How should we solve it? We try to eat together, but it's almost impossible at the moment. If we eat separately from her, she'll bounce around moaning and hanging on our legs the whole time, trying to grab our plates and cutlery, even if she just finished her food.

This sounds challenging for everyone. One thing you could try is tell her that the food on her plate is only for her and the food in your plate is for you. Then when she offers you food say “That’s your food” and then point to your plate and say “This is mummy’s food” and then place some of your food in your mouth and say “yummy”. Then encourage her to eat her own food and when she does comment on how well she is munching her food. Keep stating this and with time she will soon understand. Also if she does throw the food, say “Food stays on your plate or in your mouth” and try not to let her place her food in your mouth as this will just reinforce this behaviour.

Hi Linda it does sound like it has been a rough journey for you and your little one. When kids are on NG tubes the steps to weaning them onto solids is a lot more complex (as you would be well aware of). I hope you have a team of specialist with you guiding you through this process. ❤️

Hi mam,,,I have baby girl of 6 and half month still she is not rolling so worried about this bcz my family members are saying baggy should roll from 4 month but it's already going for 7 month but still not yet rolling I am really worried plz help me out of this

Hi @Anumm kavya that does sound very stressful. All bubs are unique and achieve the big milestones when they are ready. Your family is partly correct..some bub's do learn to roll at 4 months but definitely not ALL babies. Rolling over is a skill bubs generally learn between 4 - 7 months. So your little one still has time to learn this skill. I have a video on how you can help your little one roll from their back to their tummy which you might find helpful:kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHSldoyfmplln7c Hope this helps!
