Dave Lee Down Under went as far as to call Incredibles 2 a “PERFECT SEQUEL” so he could rate it higher than another Brad Bird film that he should’ve praised a LOT more (Ratatouille) which is why one of the video’s top comments is about Ratatouille being a very underrated movie (while people look for much more good things to say about Incredibles 2 instead). But you know, outside of that minor (I say “minor” because to give Dave Lee’s opinion on Ratatouille credit where credit is due, at least he went sort of easy on it, I guess) dick move, I highly appreciate the rest of the list (but if it were updated to the 2020s, another Pixar film that deserves to be ranked low on the list, (nearly up to the ranks of Cars 2, in fact,) would have to be Toy Story 4.

Because of the gap between it and the original, I thought about aging the characters up between that gap. Violet would be married and possibly expecting her first child, Dash would be up in college (and absolutely loving it), and Jack-Jack would be in Middle School and the overall plot of it would be centered on Bob and Helen coming to grips with the fact that the nest is emptying especially with the fact that they're going to be grandparents.

Pretty much the same as the first movie but everything is predictable, the action is locked into generic cityscapes and cramped hallways, soundtrack is mellowed down so it barely has any of the character and OOMPH it had in the first, it's just like they took the same movie and desaturated half the reason it was enjoyable. Only things they kept were that family dynamic humour, also the textures and animation were smoother, which was nice. But otherwise, a bit of a letdown. In the Elastigirl set piece I mentioned, she uses her arms to casually swing through the city like Spiderman, which would require incredible arm strength to do. She also demonstrates this strength when using just her legs to pull the other half of her motorbike to her. Yet when she is trying to catch a simple pizza boy, she is tossing and turning as if it were an even match. The pizza boy even breaks free from here grasp at one point... how could she swing through the city with here own hands if she cant even hold on to a pizza boy. This doesnt show planning, this just shows that they had a few set pieces in mind and also had a few beats to hit in order for it to be a super hero movie, so they just tossed these scenes in for the sake of filling a formula without actually thinking about it.

Like lmao! Ok! Guess we'll just ignore all those dead superheroes. I don't even know if there was a single reference. Wouldn't they be getting emotional seeing all the new-age supers, and realizing that they've lost essentially all of their old friends? Like explained in the video, there was generally just a ton of stuff (plot, character development, setting, etc) that was incredibly important to the original that was very much ignored in the second. I do not believe that this was the movie Brad originally planned on making, and that it was possibly altered by Pixar or Disney's agenda (especially when it comes to marketing and toys). At least, I hope so. You can see glimmers of a better movie within some of the scenes and storyboards that were cut, at least.

I didn't even love the first Incredibles movie because of Edna Mode being funny. I loved the first Incredibles because of its vision of a superhero world that simultaneously parodied/commented on comic-books and also felt extremely realistic and down-to-earth. I loved the first Incredibles movie because the film wasn't flashy - things weren't driven by spectacle or humor or crowd-pleasing, they were driven by characters. I loved the first Incredibles movie because those characters felt like real, mature, extremely dimensional people - not like Saturday Morning Cartoon heroes. Incredibles 2's characters don't just feel like they're from a Saturday Morning Cartoon - the entire movie itself feels like a cartoon. It's so disappointing to see such an interesting universe regressed to a story this simplistic and by-the-books. I've been waiting so long for someone to finally say it. No, it's not just lesser than the sequel, it's a middling to bad movie on its own. It's very clear that they had a different story in mind, one about reality TV and the commodification of Hero/Villain dynamics, but they just couldn't quite get it right so they decided to scrap it. Then Disney said, "No, you're doing a sequel," so they just recycled the plot of the last movie. If you're interested in speculating on what the original version would've been, there are a few deleted scenes for this movie (hand-drawn, never fully animated) that are available on KZbin. You've got one scene where a half-snake guy is auditioning to be a hero and is so desperate to not be perceived as a freak that he ends up attacking Winston, and you've got another scene showing how Elastagirl is too efficient at fighting petty crime, which sets up the need for a character like Screenslaver. It seems to me like they were setting up a story where Winston was one of the antagonists and it would be a meta-commentary on superhero films and the exploitation of sterotypes by the media.

There's also a eulogy held for all the heroes killed by Syndrome and that was the best deleted scene for me. It had that adult maturity that the first film did and was poignant and respectful. Too bad they didn't include. I mean not all the deleted scenes worked. Like Dash and Violet stopping a petty crime at the restaurant. I don't like the implication that Violet had to strip down to her birthday suit for her invisibility to be seamless and then, it gets a bit too ridiculous that the scene would get that crazy (Dash even stops a runaway car on his own) yet the kids still return back to normal by the time Bob finishes changing Jack Jack's diaper.

A good waste of 2 hours and 5 minutes. Screen Slaver/Evelyn is a copy paste of any Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain (who the first movie tongue-in-cheek mocks). I'm sure she had actual lines, but all I heard was "Waaaaah waaaaaah. A loved one of mine was tangentially killed by superheroes, so I will naturally hate ALL superheroes, and manufacture situations where only superheroes could do anything. Also, some shit about game shows. Waaaaah." To be fair, Syndrome wasn't any less of a crybaby, and his origin seems like you've seen it before (although, in my travels, I haven't encountered a comic character with an origin like his yet. But, I'm sure they're out there.) But, Syndrome had a charisma and a presence about him. Which is impressive considering he looks like a thumb. The best parts of the movie were easily the parts where Bob is raising the kids. Scenes like "I don't KNOW that way" and the dealing with Violet's break-up(? Even though I was annoyed with Violet acting like old Violet again). Incredibles should feel like a family drama/comedy story first and a superhero movie second. It was too straight-forward, with very little of the superheroing paralleling real life, mundane stuff. Like Helen thinking Bob is cheating because he's off doing superhero stuff. If anything, the superhero parts hurt this movie by making it a "I Can't Believe It's NOT Marvel" story. I would like to actually meet these people who think Incredibles 2 > Incredibles. They must've been blackout drunk when they watched the first one.

I came out of the movie feeling unsatisfied, but not entirely understanding why, but you explained my issues with the movie perfectly. Upon watching it a second time I would venture to say that it is a fun movie overall. The main flaw lies in that it is a sequel. If it had been a new superhero movie with original characters, I may have enjoyed it more. However, the first movie is just so flawless that the sequel feels disconnected from the ideas of its predecessor. The sequel is pretty to look at, but that's basically its whole identity: pretty. It lacks the substance and social commentary that the first conveys so eloquently and instead becomes a superfluous money grab, which is just so disappointing.

Sequels can be good, even better than the original. There can never be a perfect movie, it can be close but there will always be something wrong with it in some way or another. @@JG_Wentworth I agree that there can be amazing sequels, but they are few and far between. @JG_Wentworth6 жыл бұрын
@@cassie6645 Some of the major stipulations for a perfect sequel is that it needs to expand on the previous movie in a meaningful way, it needs to have a message relating to the previous movie, it needs to make sense within the universe, and it needs to accurately represent the characters from the previous movie with or without a time gap between the two films. This movie did none of those things, in fact it did the exact opposite of most if not all of those things. You do not need to lower your expectations if your expectations are the bare minimum of a decent script, which these kinds of movies can't even fucking achieve. Doesn't matter how much money the movie gets thrown at it, if it can't achieve the bare minimum of *sub decent* writing, something major is wrong.

So, one of my biggest gripes with the movie was the twist reveal for Evelyn. Her goals and reasoning are messed up. What did she want? To make supers illegal. Why did she want this? Because her father put trust in supers and it got both him and his wife murdered. 1) Supers were already illegal at the start of the movie. The finale against the giant robot didn't automatically make them legal, and the opening sequence with the Underminer only set them back. 2) The backstory with the father calling the supers for help during a break in is stupid. By that time, supers were already illegal and he would know that. Plus, even if they weren't, there's no way they'd be able to get there in time. God knows how far away they could be from the house. Not to mention, Evelyn is blaming supers for something her father did. Alright, let's fix this. And we can do it with only a few tweaks to the story. Firstly, let's change Winston and Evelyn from siblings to a married couple. This will make sense later. Secondly, have the entire Incredible family included in the hero scene. There could be a montage of them taking on small crimes, maybe have them work alongside the authorities to show that they're cooperative. We can even have them team up with the new supers to help with publicity. This way the characters all have something to do during the film instead of 3/4 them mostly just sitting around. Thirdly, have like two to three action set pieces where the Incredible family comes together to stop some city wide threat. The screenslaver is also one of the villains and claims he orchestrated the other disasters. Fourthly, there are going to be a few scenes where one of the Incredibles overhears Winston and Evelyn talking about someone. That this person isn't ready to be seen by the public. And finally, the twist reveal. However, it plays out a little differently. Helen still pieces together that the screenslaver was a bogus villain and Evelyn subdues her. But now, both Evelyn and Winston are working together. She reveals that all of the incidents were staged and that the villains they arrested were actually actors they hired. Helen asks why go to such lengths and Evelyn calls for someone to step forward. It's a little girl, no older than five, and she has purple skin, horns and a tail. Evelyn reveals that everything was for her's and Winston's daughter. She wants a world where her daughter can play with other children out in the open and not be hidden away. Evelyn asks what Helen would do for her children, what she would do if it was her child? Helen's at a loss for words. She agrees with what Evelyn is trying to accomplish but not her methods. Should she remain silent and let everything unfold, or should she speak out and stop the Deavors? It all leaves a nasty taste in her mouth. And that's all I really got for now. Couldn't think of a climax to this. Maybe someone else has an idea?

@@murciadoxial8056 That is kinda true but the 3rd movie better explored the theme of a kid outgrowing their toys. The 2nd movie ends with Woody basically deciding that he wants to be there for Andy even though he knows Andy will eventually outgrow him one day. The 3rd movie ends with Andy, having outgrown the toys, passing them onto the next generation and the toys being at peace with his decision. So, while the 3rd had a similar story structure to the 2nd, Andy giving up his toys at the end of the 3rd made that movie feel final. Like all the characters had moved on and there was no more story left to tell. Because of that, it didn't feel as much of a capitalising on M U H N O S T E L G I A A A as the 4th one does (or at least it doesn't to me). Toy Story 3 was a cash grab that was also a beautiful end to a beloved franchise. Toy Story 4 is just a cash grab.

@@thehatohyeahyeah5141 That's fair enough. I generally see all sequels as cash grabs because studios usually make them just to make money and not because they have more story to tell. There's a subtle difference between an open ending and a cliffhanger. A cliffhanger is when *unless we get a follow-up the original story simply doesn't make sense* and feels empty. A cliffhanger's purpose is *external* whereas an open ending's is *internal,* as in, an open ending improves the reception of the story it just finished. It may be something like what the original Incredibles did with the Underminer, it's a way of triumphantly telling the viewers, "those folks are back in business, baby, ain't letting no assholes put them down!" but it can also be the kind of ending Blade Runner did, which allows the viewer to interpret the story in a completely new light but without making it necessary for a sequel to appear to fill in all the blank spots.

The characters were rewritten for no apparent reason, given strange, contrived arcs and motivations, speaking strangely disconnected lines without a hint of irony or reverence for their prior thoughts on a subject, acting implausibly and without context, and all of these changes by a studio that thought they knew what the audience wanted, and getting it completely wrong in the process.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing too like the government wants to disect the kids because they're "dangerous" and the parents are getting older and are worried about if they can protect their kids. What are the consequences if they keep fighting crime. The kids are captured, Jack Jack saves them with incredibly funny fight scenes etc. The kids realize they can fight crime and be treated like normal people. @Carols9896 жыл бұрын
I kinda agree, even though I liked the movie, but I have to say something: Helen returning to being a hero is not the same thing as Bob being a hero in the first movie. Bob was more like a workaholic dad that is too busy reliving his days of glory through his job, Helen is more like a full time mom re ingressing into the job market after more than a decade of ONLY taking care of her children. She likes being a mom, of course, but she is finally getting a break, spending time again with adults, having fun and destressing. The time Bob spent with the children in the first movie is like a dad who is rarely home, and when he is he only gets the good parts: going to the movies, playing outside, etc. He isn't there for the hard parts, so he never completely bonds with the kids as a person, and they only have this kinda distant image of him as "my cool dad". Helen dedicated what, 15 years of her life to only raising and loving her kids, she is only getting a break, not abandoning them. Also yeah, this movie should've happened years into the future.

I fell like Incredibles 2 was rushed... It is clear that so much effort and thought was put into the original Incredibles, so to see Incredibles 2 not only repeat basically the same themes but worse, but to also throw out half the rules made in the first film (such as charter design), is simply hear wrenching. One particular nit pick of mine (amoung the usual stuff people talk about, and what I think is a good summary of the rule breaking), is the visual "style". In the original movie, the whole thing was a parody of classic super heros, criticizing how idealized and incosequential cartoon superheros were. The character design was complex and deep, each character had flaws, and was a complex individual. The visual design of the characters (and world) also refected this. While there were some things (like the Incredible mobile and syndromes rocket/robot), they stretch what you would believe, but still felt real enough, and even fit in with the movies timeframe. In this movie we have tiny screens that can fit into goggles, a hydrofoil yacht, and a FREAKING MAGLEV, which are all even somewhat of a stretch TODAY (if the movie was set in the modern world, I would be fine with this, but this is still in the 1960's or whatever year (I don't remember the exact year))! This discontinuity also extends to the characters. All the characters in the previous movie were all designed as humans. At the most a character might have a ridiculous hairdo or a funky outfit (or in Edna's case dwarfism), but they were all real enough to reflect the idea that these people are humans who all have to lead private lives to lead at the end of the day. Now in this movie, helen is now the classic cartoon literal hourglass, violet has stick figure legs, and we even have A FREAKING OWL!!!!!. HOW THE HELL IS OWL GUY SUPPOSED TO LEAD A LIFE WHEN HE IS A FREAKING SENTIENT OWL?!?!?! THE WHOLE POINT OF THE FIRST MOVIE WAS TO ESTABLISH SUPER HEROS AS AVERAGE HUMANS. Even the powers used by the super heros are extreme. Even going through the list of heros only mentioned in the first movie, no one has truly extreme powers, and they all have their limits. Bob has to physically train to regain his superstength. The park family still has these limitations, yet now we have a guy who can crush stuff with his mind, a lady who can make Portal, and a guy who puked literal lava. There is no restriction on how BS and extreme people's powers can be... This sequel undermines everything the original was trying to criticize and parody. It has no point, and this sequal is now just a normal superhero movie, the same thing the original movie clearly established it wasn't.
