Am in my 60's and low-wage for the last 15 years to the point it's less than a couple dollars above state minimum, now. Disgusting it's taken my whole life to acheive for that? I have and do save very frugally but nothing to show for it anymore and so I rent a room in someone else's home. Inflation is breaking me but I refuse to give up on my hope of ever having my own home again. Don't have enough to get one and have been chasing the cost to rent an apt. or own even a mobile home for 10 years. Wages just don't increase enough to make much of a difference. Your past labor doesn’t get devalued if you invest your money (be that a 401k, Roth, IRA, or just plain old brokerage accounts). Any index fund has beaten inflation massively over time - enough that, even adjusted for inflation, you would double your money every 10 years. So your past labor doesn’t really get devalued so long as you invest any of it. Additionally, wages have kept pace with inflation over time, so it’s not like you’re making less money in the present or the future because of inflation. Government spending increases inflation just like any other spending does, but the driving factor is an increase in the money supply/velocity of money or a decrease in the supply of goods and services. But inflation in itself isn’t bad - only out of control inflation, which is what the Federal Reserve prevented with smart monetary and fiscal policy these past couple years. But I doubt any of you understand economics so who cares what I have to say.

It never gained more that 3% a year and was not how it was sold to us at an (up to) 11% gain. I did better just saving on my own than I ever did with that 401k. Regardless, government spending hand-over-fist on so much wasteful projects and wars, has devalued the dollar to where .20 cent - $1.00 wage increases do NOT keep up, not by a long shot. Unless you are with a labor union or in mid to upper management of course.The upper-middle class and wealthy are just fine. You have money you won't miss to invest appropriately for a better return on it.

Cutting govt. spending to save money sounds very fair and simple, but it's has a ripple effect. For example cutting down on subsidies for food stamp, which will cause people struggling for food which in turn will lead to people either commit crime or suffer malnutrition. It also causes a section of society collapse who are dependent on the very same to meet basic needs or for survival. One might argue that they can get a job, but here is the catch most people who survived on food stamps are the ones who are not educated nor have decent job or any financial support. The poor section of the society can do menial jobs for money but they are also more exposed job cuts, inflation and poor economy. The govt spending must be used correctly and effectively.

In fact, this point is relatively small compared to money supply increases relative to economic activity, cost of raw materials, especially energy, supply chain problems, pent up consumer demand as we all observed shortly after Covid, corporate price hikes to jack up profits during a period when supplies of goods were limited, monetary and fiscal policies, especially interest rates.
