@@izy2302 To answer your question, like most people with autism I have an average level of intelligence. Most people on the spectrum can be very intelligent in certain things (which is usually their special interest) and in Sheldon's case that would be science. But I think Sheldon in the show has something called "savant syndrome" where an autistic person is INCREDIBLY smart in a certain subject. Although savant syndrome is very rare. Definitely understand the mother of the 9 yr old girl that states she doesnt grasp certain social cues etc. I definitely don't see ADHD as a bad thing especially if its handled properly. This girl looks like she'd thrive in a gymnastics class. I'm almost 30 and a mature adult, but I literally break bones if I don't have an adrenaline-fueled, explosive power, wild intense way of expressing and ridding my physical energy. This isn't bad--far from that, it describes every serious athlete I've ever met. They're just intense, and have a lot of energy. They get depressed or can't focus and can't really sit still, ever, if they're forced to take a break between seasons or due to an injury. As a kid I was a runner, and I'd eat while dancing around--and later on my runs. I also literally taught myself to read while running (relatively blind, stuck to one trail) and would do conditioning while studying. I'm still the same way--I've just found ways to adjust (ie, holding a pike if I need to stay seated and taking breaks for skills). All those qualities of hers would not only be normal, but prized and valued and even a little revered in many sports environments. Maybe that's not her sole problem, but surely it'd at least help if she were coming home utterly exhausted after practice? It seems an obvious and healthy outlet regardless; why wasn't this attempted?

Regarding the little boy Kyle - My son (now 33) at age 5 was diagnosed with ADHD and took Ritalin too. We even tried with the time released. He was prescribed Clonidine to take at night to lower his blood pressure so he would sleep. He was extremely violent especially with me more then his father. By 14, he was diagnosed having O.D.D.( Oppositional Defiant Disorder - basically everything was his way or the highway) The ADHD, was obsolete by this point. He was more verbally violent. He started on Adderall. This helped.....temporarily. By 16, he was diagnosed Bipolar. THIS, was, and always had been, the TRUE diagnoses all along. He now, is not taking anything, married. Has 2 disabled step daughters to take are of. He is not entirely out of the clear - his Bipolar is still an issue. But he's been able to keep himself under control.

My two boys have ADHD as diagnosed by a neuropsychologist through extensive testing. They have been re-tested every 3 years to receive 504 accomodations at school. Stimulant medication works and now I have learned that the lowest dose to achieve desired results with the smallest side-effects is ideal to assist with academic struggles and struggles of daily skills. So far, from what I have learned, the very best answer to assisting these children achieve success in their lives is the following: Find what they are interested in and put all efforts into making sure that it becomes the priority in their life and yours. For instance, Michael Phelp's parents put all efforts into his swimming and Tony Hawk's mom put all efforts into his skateboarding. If your child is good at sports, acting, computers, or music -- they may be able to be extremely successful despite the ADHD. Focussing on what they ARE good at or intensely interested in, will boost their confidence and help them in all areas. I would not apply this too much to video game playing, however, this may be directed towards 3D animation or programming instead. Do not go too much against the grain with them as it turns out disastrous. Also, don't be afraid to try medications as the results without medication are worse!

Idk about Robert not even trying medication. He might be doing alright in school academically but his impulsively could be doing some real psychological harm. He might seem ok but loosing friends and getting into trouble for behavior can really add up over time. His relationship with his sister could improve too. There is no evidence that the medication would hurt to try and if they didn't like it it could be stopped at any time. Why wouldn't you try? Parenting a child with ADHD means that child must be parented differently than a "normal" child 24/7 and there are times that it seems to be a daily battle especially when you are just beginning to change the lifestyle of your home because of this diagnosis. It is a lifestyle and it will be for your child their entire life because one doesn't outgrow ADHD. The importance of these kids having structure can't be emphasized enough, having consistency within their daily lives, schedules, discipline, everything! There are medications and natural treatments that can help along with therapy but none of that will have an effect if parents and children and teachers are not on the same page. These are not bad or naughty kids. They have a neurological disorder that will follow them throughout their entire lives. It is up to parents and therapists and doctors to come together and help these kids now before they reach adulthood with no coping skills.

Not all is so negative with ADHD . Why not using the energy these kids have in a positive way? They are the ones who will go ahead working on a project when everybody else already is tired and outworn! They are never exhausted and nothing is too much for them! They make great nurses, firefighters or scientists when they find something which really really cheers them up! The greatest problem is the school and the teachers, who put kids in drawers and are not able to understand what these kids need. Also a lot of them are extremely intelligent and they notice in a heartbeat, when they are smarter than her teachers! My daughter was diagnosed with it at the age of 10 and now is thirty, she is a fabulous young woman, very engaged at her work and encouraging for other people. I know very well, what it means to raise one of this extraordinary and special ( in a good way) kids!

I’m undiagnosed, but my older sibling and mom have ADHD and I’m going to get tested next month even though my doctor even said it’s pretty clear I have it. Though the point of this is, my sibling just started taking a new medicine and it was the wrong kind. They need to have something to calm them down, and they were given something like 5 cups of strong coffee. They passed out and couldn’t start shaking. It was funny, but dangerous.

As a former pre-K and kindergarten teacher, 5 mins in and I can tell you the first two children have more than ADHD or ADD going on. They are not usual cases of ADHD or ADD. I am interested to see what a child psychiatrist would say or what other disorders are at play. (I see bits of personality disorders)

As a teacher and someone with ADHD myself, I completely agree. I don't doubt they have ADHD, but the most visible behaviour on display here is from co-morbid disorders. About 80% of kids with ADHD have a second disorder and 50% have a third one. The most common co-morbid, which I believe is the real culprit here, is Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), which somewhere around 50% of ADHD kids develop. I'd say these kids are also well on their way to developing the more severe Conduct Disorder, which 1 in 4 ADHD kids will develop.

My 9 year old son has ADHD. My Wife and I agreed that we would NOT medicate him. To drain some of that energy we keep him busy all the time with sports. He plays football, baseball and He is in boxing. It helps keep the ADHD at bay. He still has issues at school and a meltdown every now and then but not too bad. The only thing I can say is that ADHD Kids hate to lose probably 10 times worse than the average kid. So we have to deal with thay whenever things don't go his way on sports.

Google Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. It is the reason people with ADHD over-react to losing or being told off by a parent/teacher. Some kids experience it by blaming themselves and becoming acutely depressed. Others externalise their feelings, blaming others and throwing a tantrum.

Rubbish. The parents play a huge role. Neglect and lack of nurture. In the old days they would be seen as naughty kids. They have no fear. Then it’s the teachers left to parent these poor kids so they push for medication to make these children more controllable. My nephew is on ridalin. My sister and partner were not nurtures, they were selfish, neglectful, uninvolved, hardly picked him up, highly controlled and when I look at the parents one has bipolar and one aspd. This is genetic. One parent must have it. My poor little nephew was so traumatised. It’s all about “what the parents are going through”. Rubbish. Fix and diagnose the parents and the child will follow. My heart breaks for these kids. Why don’t parents look in the mirror.

The thing is, lessons don’t have to be torture for a kid. If you make the lesson interesting for a kid they will be fully engaged. It’s more of a challenge with homework but it can be done. My son was failing at geography, and part of his homework was to learn the names of all the provinces in the Netherlands where we live. I taught him several clever memory tricks to help him memorise the names and from then on his grades went up enormously. Education should be fun and engaging. Most teachers don’t seem to get that though. I know that from first hand experience as both my son and I have ADHD.

Sucks for the 50% of us who don't have "hyperactivity" or "behavioral issues" because we don't get diagnosed, don't get taken seriously. Only paying attention to the hyperactive kids who have ADHD is, in my opinion, one of the biggest problems to getting people to understand it. STOP painting us all with the "brat" brush like this little hellion. A huge percent of us are quiet and introverted! We need just as much help as the squeaky wheel! /rant

For Robert's mom to say that as long as he doesn't lose his self-esteem while his parents regularly attend his school/class, while he continues to have problems with his peers, while being in trouble multiple times a day, etc, is crazy. Of course he is going to develop low self-esteem; he has severe ADHD. You cannot grow up with unmedicated ADHD without developing low self-esteem. Robert knows that he is different, the kids in his class know that he is different, and he hurts others, does dangerous things, and breaks stuff. I don't understand how you wouldn't develop low self-esteem growing up like that. 🤷♀️ Although Robert's parents recognize their son's disorder, they have to be in partial denial if they really think that their unmedicated son, Robert, will grow up with a healthy level of self-esteem. That just doesn't happen, and at some point, he may even ask one of his parents why he is such a bad person. When you are displined for your behavior multiple times a day and need your parents to come to your school to help manage your behavior, then what kid wouldn't think that? So, yes, having low self-esteem is a natural consequence for children with severe ADHD when they grow up with their condition going untreated.

Yeah, I don’t see the point of this video. Kids don’t act like this girl unless there’s other things going on in their lives. This video frames ADHD as something that parents and teachers have to endure which is probably a massive contributing factor as to why Sam is acting the way she is. The best thing a parent of an ADHD child can do for both themselves and their child is to strive to understand what your child is feeling. Children don’t have the language to articulate how their ‘normal’ differ from yours so listen to what ADHD adults have to say about ADHD. In people with the hyperactive component there is a physical anxiety that makes not moving incredibly uncomfortable, thus running and fidgeting.

I personally feel like the situation could have been handled so much better, if you keep telling your kid she's weird and will never have a future, do you really find it weird she acts this way? The biggest problem here is not the ADHD but the lack of understanding for it. I hope people don't take this video as an example or informative source. Also and I can't stress did enough: medication is not an answer. Its working and talking about yourself and keep trying to understand your self and why your different. QUESTION TO YOURSELF: is the child seeking attention or is there really a problem. Artificial overstimulation might tell the answer. The real wake-up call came when my youngest was writing an opinion dissertation on a mmedical journal article and he was reading the article, watching a Disney movie and playing heavy metal music on his headset while composing his report on the computers all at the same time. I finally got that his mind needed more than one thing to do and he was a high school junior at the time. I never knew till then that he had been doing this for years, and he continued to do it thru college graduating in the upper 5% of the class of 650 students. I guess it really worked for him !!
