Why is Afghanistan so strategically important? What are the reasons of its centrality of Asia's power balance? This video will analyze Afghanistan strategic environment and the factors affecting Asia's biggest players into securing their political and security influence over the Kabul.
In the last two centuries Afghanistan has been at center of global powers competition, first with the British , then the Soviet and finally with the US. But why is the South Asian country so important in the global geopolitics game? One of the problems facing Afghanistan is that the people only use one name. A related problem is that over 75 percent of the men are named Abdullah. So when someone walks into a room asks “who’s in charge here” a bunch of people stand up and a fight ensues. It has been like this for centuries.

The video makes good points about the geopolitical considerations of Afghanistan's neighbours but ignores how the Afghan peoples have a history of wanting to be left alone and and frustrating outsiders. I doubt that Afghanistan offers Pakistan additional strategic depth in a conflict with India. Pakistan's key interest is to deny Indian influence in Afghanistan, particularly with respect to what 'was' a growing, educated middle-class in the cities. Pakistan's strategic interests are served by denying influence to other powers in Afghanistan. Supporting the anarchic and fundamentalist Taliban regimes serves this imperative well.

Really? I felt the information about AFG itself, not the surrounding countries, was the same as what mainstream media talks about. 1. ) Geography. It is mentioned in the video. A lot of land trade can potentially move through the country. One reason China is courting it. 2. ) Afghanistan is tribally diverse and extremely conservative outside of urban centers. Building a functional state is nigh impossible, especially a democracy. The Taliban succeeds because it has the guns, it's willing to use them, it appeals to rural folks who have suffered due to UK, US, and Russia, and it is largely a loosely aligned proto-state maintained by force rather than being an actual functional country. 3. ) Afghanistan has no future and isn't worth dying over. It will continue to be a sandbox for future games and war of other powers for decades to come. 4. ) Keep Afghanistan weak and chaotic so nobody can actually create a foothold in the region.

Pakistan's interest is also to ensure that Afghan governments do not make any serious attempts to lay claim over large swathes of Pakistani territory. This is a huge part of the puzzle that is rarely addressed, and is often overlook by the often-repeated, and greatly exaggerated "strategic depth" argument. Pakistan has seen Afghanistan as a troublesome neighbor right from the start as Afghanistan's Pashtun-dominated government has had a long history of laying claim to huge parts of Pakistan, and even supported a Pashtun secessionist movement that fizzled out in the 1970s as Pashtuns began to play a more central role in the Pakistani state. Afghanistan was also the only country at the UN that voted against recognition of Pakistan. The last Afghan government's ministers (especially Vice President Saleh) would often make a point of claiming Northwest Pakistan as Afghan territory (even though the Pashtuns there show no real interest in joining Afghanistan, and Afghanistan's non-Pashtun population have shown no interest in absorbing tens of millions of Pashtuns that would in effect give Pashtuns a super-majority in Afghanistan).

Pakistan has no interest in afghanistan other than making them stable and to not allow india to use afghan soil for their proxy war in pakistan. Pakistan has only interest in jammu and kashmir which is a legitimate claim since that region is majority muslim and was robbed of them during partition due to indias dirty politics and a ruler of kashmir at the time that was non muslim and didnt represent the peoples choice. Pashtuns in pakistan are arguably the most patriotic in the country after punjabis, they even defended pakistan against afghanistan during the Bajaur campaign battle launched by afghanistan. And afghanistan shares more commonalities with pakistan than any other country in terms of ethnicity, religion etc

@@Kamome163 I guess it is of way higher sound quality, but maybe the animations need to visualize the script a bit more or something, because at some points it feels like he just soullessly reads over it and nothing is happening. Because when you show clips of examples (like in 11:50 and 5:07) it is always more interesting than the part starting at (3:00) where the visuals don´t really correspond with the audio. But overall I would still see it as an improvement in the channels quality. Perhaps you could also visualize the structure of the videos with chapters in the timeline and different subsections of the video. Just keep in mind that this is just really small criticism and other people might not mind at all so take everything I say with a grain of salt and have a great evening!

India is an ally of Russia, not an adversary or competitor. It was the only non-Warsaw Pact country that supported the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and still buys the bulk of its military equipment from Russia. India does not have an interest in blunting Russian influence in Central Asia, but instead to limit Pakistan's influence and over-land access to it. Otherwise, India actually has little interest or use of Afghanistan. Afghanistan was never a major supplier of anything to India other than for nuts and dried fruits. The touted "historic trade ties" actually used Afghanistan merely as a transit corridor to the much wealthier centers of Bukhara and Samarkand or Persia, rather than Afghanistan itself. And what trade there was actually occurred mostly between Afghanistan and cities which now are in Pakistan (like Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and Lahore) and only to a much lesser extent to cities in modern India like Jalandhar and Delhi (and to an even much lesser extent, Calcutta).

Well, due to the current Ukraine war, Russian resources will be stretched thin. Economically they have to be dependent on China and India in the future. So, I do not see Russia trying to undermine China and India's interests in the region. Also, Russia has built an oil and gas pipeline directly to China. It desperately wants to reach India now, and India wants to reach Central Asia. India and China, as a civilizational states of 1.4 billion each with rising economies will never become energy independent if they do not secure long term gas and oil deals with Iran and Russia. It is a win win as both Iran and Russian economy will grow tremendously. Going forwards, Russia will want to secure the Artic as more glaciers melt. Iran will want to increase it's influence in the Middle East and possible undo the current nation states of Israel and Saudi Arabia. Currently, the interests of China and India seem at odds. Not allowing India a space in Afghanistan will help China. India will try to counter this by increasing it's dominance in the Indian Ocean which is a crucial zone for Chinese trade and it's economy. The Europeans and Americans will try to foil any kind of quadrumvirate of Russia, India, China and Iran to take place. Basically, we are back to : THE GREAT GAME.

Afghanistan is not strategic region. It may be in a central location but is difficult terrain and poor soil makes it mostly useless. It does have large mineral resources but you need a lot of infrastructure which will cost a huge amount of investment and there is no costal port to export it. It is practically impossible to deal with as the Americans and the Russians learnt first hand with the British still having difficulties to understand that. The Iranians and Pakistanis know this and that is why they don't bother with Afghanistan. It's better to stay out of Afghanistan. Pakistan and Iran are far more strategically important.

I will add a few things and will keep it short this time. 1) Taleban is created by the CIA with Pakistani help. 2) Soviets were drawn to the Afghanistan war by the CIA. CIA ex-director who oversaw the operation in the 80s has confessed this. In fact, he is proud of his accomplishment. 3) Uyghurs are a Turkic population. 4) China promoted Islamic fundamentalism in Uyghuristan to create a buffer against CIA-controlled Uzbek fundamentalism and also to curb Uyghur nationalism by inventing a reason to oppress them. 5) Afghanistan is important for the United States to divide Asia in two to confine and weaken both China and Russia and also Iran, to meet with India from land and weaken it if possible (if and when China will weaken further). 6) The US, UK, Russia, and China wouldn't want a unified front of Turkic countries in Central Asia to dominate the region. So it is a proxy war for resources (also by securing the oil trade in the Indian Ocean to confine China further). See the ongoing Kazakhstan revolt in this context. Kazakhstan is also at the center of well... Central Asia.

Your commentary is average at best, there's no depth. Very colorless analysis. Every country has foreign policy & security interests, but there are the more naughty ones & the less naughty ones. The ones with an aggressive border policy, have authoritarian & unstable Governments, almost always fall in the Naughty category. Communist authoritarian China, Islamic Republic of Pakistan & Russia (under an almost Dictator Putin), obviously push the envelope on these kind of border integrity matters. You calling out India having "insecurities" on Afghanistan is not a mature take on India's policy interests. Wrong choice of words. India has all along been playing defense with the very-naughty Pakistan & China. Pakistan literally gobbled up Afghanistan territory in 1947, as it smartly took over the British-decided Durand line (carved out in 1893 on a 100-years agreement) leaving the Afghans high & dry. Afghans hate Pakistanis for their duplicity & conniving radicalizing tactics that have utterly destroyed Afghanistan. If anyone is insecure, its Pakistan because they know they are playing a dirty game of state-sponsored terrorism & every sane person hates them. You also did not cover how Pakistan is selling out to China, by giving them operational control of the crucial Gwadar port, mining rights in Baluchistan, getting cheap Chinese Arms & so on. Pakistan is literally the reason & chief source for all the trouble in Afghanistan.

Pakistan did not absorb an inch of Afghan territory in 1947, but inherited territories ruled by the British Raj. Afghanistan unilaterally disputes the validity of the border, and has even supported secessionist movements in Pakistan that eventually fizzled out. They even launched a border campaign in the 1950s to seize Pakistani territory. The Afghans were under a misperception that Pakistan's Pashtuns for some reason were loyal to Afghanistan, even though they had not been Afghan subjects in over 100 years by that point. In fact, Pashtun nationalists in 1947 advocated union with India, not Afghanistan. Afghanistan for quite a long time has advocated seizing upwards of 50% of Pakistani territory, so it is no great mystery why Pakistan's interest is in keeping Afghanistan too weak to ever cause such a problem from ever possibly turning into reality.

The people in that land chose pakistan over afghanistan they even defended pakistan when afghanistan launched an attack called the bajaur campaign, prior to this attack the relations between the countries were normal but it was afghanistan that caused this enmity relationship. And to put more salt in the wound, it was pashtuns from kpk and pashtuns from the FATA (federal administered tribal areas, now kpk) that defended pakistan against the afghans lol, so your point is ridiculous. How can you call out pakistan for state sponsering terrorism when india has been using afghan soil to fund and arm militant organisations like the BLA that are designated a terrorist group by the UK, USA and european union. And not to mention the occupation of jammu and kashmir by india that was robbed by indias dirty politics during partition. At the very least, one would expect a detailed video about Afghanistan not to say "Afghani people." It is Afghan people, as Afghani = the money/currency of Afghanistan.

Lots of wrong info there mate - just lost respect for your channel after being a regular watcher for ages. Pakistan acquired nuclear weapons from China with the USA’s blessings before India considered nuclear armaments thereby forcing India to go nuclear too. To this day, Pakistan also rapes/forcibly converts girls from minority communities to Islam. Also, the ‘war’ with India was Bangladesh’s war for independence from Pakistani dictatorship. India freed Bangladesh as any Bangladeshi will tell you - despite staunch resistance from France, the UK & the US (F-UK-US). Pakistan started off life with billions of dollars of free cash in Indian currency - back then the Indian Rupee was backed by gold and was worth nearly $2 and Pakistan also got additional aid from oil rich nations + the USA. Besides the Taliban, Pakistan supports Al Qaida and many other extremist organisations - remember how the USA ‘finally discovered’ Bin Laden in Pakistan? And then - India has been fostering cultural ties with Central Asia with Russia’s blessings because China and Russia have border disputes, and because Russia and India have been strategic partners from the 1950s when France, the UK & the US (F-UK-US) tried to militarily/economically screw India. Deeply incorrect. nonsense. Neither Pakistan nor China introduced nuclear weapons to South Asia. India tested nuclear weapons in 1974, well before Pakistan's nuclear programme ever started. The US also did not give its blessings to Pakistan, and at best, turned the other way. In the 1990s, the US even sanctioned Pakistan for its nuclear weapons. As for minority rights, read any news source. India's moral high ground on that issue is exaggerated, and rapidly deteriorating given the way that the Hindu nationalist government has been treating Muslims, and now increasingly, Christians.
