This is the thing that drove me crazy at the start of the pandemic. The people whining about how they couldn't do their daily things like Starbucks runs and going to Target in particular. I kept thinking that if the only thing you have to look forward to daily is going to Target, then there is a huge commercialism problem in America that needs to be addressed.

My local Target is pleasant to shop at because it's clean and organized and feels roomy. It is also restocked pretty frequently. I visited a friend in another state and she took me to her closest Target and I was so turned off. There were items left on the floor, empty shelves, poor lighting and out of date fixtures. The people in my town regard Target as a step up from our Walmart (which has also improved over the years) so the customers and patrons mostly help take care of it so we can keep having nice things.

When I lived 10 minutes from target and 10 minutes from Walmart, I used to go to Target because it wasn’t as crowded and people were usually better behaved. But that was for leisure shopping or to only get a few items. If I had an actual grocery haul to do, I made myself go to Walmart because I knew I’d save money. Now I live rurally and go to Walmart almost daily. People here are less crazy, and the closest target is an hour away

Hey Michigan subscriber here 👋🏾. I used to be "obsessed" with Target during the Mossimo, Mossimo Supply, Merona Era. I still have a Mossimo 100% leather Jacket from 2007. Target clothing was affordable whether it was regular price or clearance. Not anymore, Target clothing is too expensive even on clearance most of the time. Since about 2014, Walmart clothing basics, knit wear (Time and Tru, No Boundaries) and some trendy items have been priced so great in my opinion. I love the Free Assembly line at Walmart and scored high rise wide leg jeans for $5! I've bought faux leather jeggings, knit skirt set, knit and cotton dresses, Men's corduroy shacket, flowy summer pants and tank tops. I'm sticking to Walmart because the clothing I find there on clearance can't be beat and for my lifestyle I can find the staples and basics I need at Walmart.

I agree about being able to find great staple clothes at Walmart. I love corduroy, and I got a beautiful corduroy navy dress there that is my favorite silhouette WITH pockets that has become my favorite dress, and I found a brown pair of nice thick wide wale men’s corduroy pants that fit me perfectly as oversized baggy pants that were marked down to a dollar! I also have found a lot of great bras there which is really surprising because I have a rough time finding bras that fit me. I gave up trying to order them online, I have to be able to actually try them on and feel the fabric and Walmart has come in clutch for that!

this was interesting! i think the coffee shop does add to the more “cozy” associations with target, and i’ve always felt like target was more comfortable. walmart feels more “cold” and like a warehouse because of some of the things you noted, the lighting, floors, shelves, etc. i used to also feel like target was more comfortable because it was less crowded, but lately every time i go to my local target, it’s just as crowded and overstimulating as walmart! i’m one of those ppl who just wants to get my stuff and get out in either store, so the ppl leisurely walking around with coffee in target sometimes annoy me 😂

Before YT, IG, and TT hauls, I loved Target. I would get up early on Sunday morning, treat myself to a Starbucks, and hit up Target. Back in the day Massimo and Issac Mizarahi clothing line was amazing. The quality was good, and to this day, I still have certain pieces from the early 2000s. I don't frequent Target as much as I used to. From toothpaste and laundry detergent being locked up and wanna be influencers shooting content in the store, my nerves are wreaked. Its no longer relaxing to me.

definitely more so than the generational divide in demographics, i feel the class divide!! in addition to being a conscious consumer, i live below the poverty level, so there’s really no reason for me to be inside a target tbh. 😭 also i live in a smaller city and our target is SMALL, so i think it’s always felt more like a “specialty” store to me anyway. our store doesn’t have a starbucks, the beauty section feels exactly the same as walmart’s, the grocery section is almost nonexistent, and they removed the previously-huge media section in order to add more aisles for kitchenware. it just doesn’t hold the same appeal it did when i was a child/teenager.

Another thing about Wal-Mart and older people: many of them are on a fixed income thanks to Social Security, and so many not having much saved for retirement (if any at all). As Wal-Mart has lower prices, their dollar can go farther. Also Wal-Mart Pharmacy has (or had) a list of $5 and $3 medications, ones that are commonly used by older people especially and those with lower incomes. I’m not sure that Target’s CVS has an equivalent.

Walmart is kind of too chaotic in my opinion. There’s always screaming children, gross stuff smeared on some stuff you might try to grab, immature/uncultured people farting or burping really loud in the middle of an isle. The fitting rooms are always closed or non-existent, no full-length mirrors to even see how a jacket or a hoodie might look on you, clothes are often super disorganized. If it’s pajama set, the top will be hanging with jeans and the bottom will be in the toy section somewhere. Eventually you just give up looking for them and leave. I sometimes get harassed at the door by their staff because I don’t have a receipt, since I bought literally nothing. I didn’t find what I originally went in for. So now, they are looking at my small purse with suspicion trying to assess in their mind if I could have shoplifted a 36”flat-screen tv from their electronics section and shoved it into a 8” x 4” cross-body bag. Or if I look like I could have hidden their entire rotisserie chicken up in my anus. The store is a zoo! I go in only if I feel that there is no other choice.

I used to love Walmart before the pandemic: reliable, you can find everything, it was fairly priced, convenient, and used to be more organized. Now, visiting one is an overwhelming experience: a lot of aisles empty or messed up, mispriced items, and no one assists you. The lack of customer service in most of the staff makes it pretty unappealing to be there.

On the replay ,Walmart does not need to use marketing dollars ,because more people spend money at Walmart, their bottom line is the only thing they think about. They make deals with suppliers where they get units of products at such a low price that their margin is higher than Targets. I have bought many of their house brands of clothing over the years, kids clothes baby needs men's and women's clothes and I felt like they lasted just a long as other brands but for a much lower cost. The brand George is great. Also I like a 1 stop shop experience,I get my groceries ,clothes gaming, houseware etc all at once. I believe that location of store for people also has an affect of where they shop. If a Target is closer people will shop there ,if a Walmart is closer they will shop there.

When I was highschool (around 5-7 years ago) my sister and I would go to target for fun and just walk around the store. Sometimes we got Starbucks, but we mostly didn’t buy anything when we were there since I was a child with no money haha. We just enjoyed walking around looking at all the fun things they had and never went to the food section because target was more expensive than walmart or other grocery stores we went to for food. Now that I am in Canada I miss target sometimes just because I miss the environment and walking around for fun and not buying anything. Its honestly fundamentally changed the way I shop since I dont feel the need to buy something in every store I go into now. Walmarts are so crowded and unpleasant to be in so you just want to get out as soon as possible. I feel like target with the Starbucks (and the fancy pizza hut in mine) made it more like a mini mall than a grocery store like walmart. So interesting to think about and I love your videos btw!

Growing up, my city had three choices to to more major grocery shopping - Winn-Dixie, Walmart, and Publix. My mom favored Publix above the others specifically because the higher prices "meant better quality" and "Walmart is for poor people", so I generally didn't go to Walmart outside of select outings with friends. We got a Target near the time I was graduating, but because it was on the other side of town, my mom wouldn't bother to go because it was too far. I think a lot of the time, perception of Walmart fell a bit in line with why she looked down on it - somehow, lower prices was considered something you would only worry about if finances were tight, it was worse quality, etc. I didn't get to shop at Walmart especially often, but my clothes always lasted years and my supplies were always good enough for my purposes. I got into crocheting and could spend $2-3 on skeins of yarn, my bike lasted years before Florida weather claimed it for rust, so on and so forth. Unfortunately, I met a lot of people who treated Walmart as something to look down on, even if Target was very similar in substance. But the difference in visuals alone seems to have done a number on people's preferences of the stores, because that curated appearance in Target seems in line with the same mentality for why people liked Publix in my area.

One of the main things I prefer about Target is the ease of accessing products. Our Walmart in town now has a lot of things, especially in health and beauty, behind locked plexiglass. I needed some saline solution a month ago and stood in Walmart pressing the "please help" button for someone to come unlock the case for 15 minutes straight, and nobody came, so I left. Went to Target and was able to get in and out in less than 5 minutes because their saline was not locked up.

As an American when shops primarily at Walmart (like 95% of the time) but also does love Target, here’s the main reasons why, for me: 1. I live out in the country and Walmart is more accessible, 10min away vs almost 30min away. I would say accessibility in rural areas in Walmarts number 1 advantage. There are lots of rural parts of America where Walmart is basically the only place to shop. 2. Walmart is much cheaper, especially the groceries. At the end of the day cheaper wins when I’m buying a week’s worth of groceries. 3. The store experience part is 100% true. Walmart feels comfortable but when I go there I get what I need and I leave. I even use the app to find things faster. At Target I like to shop around, see what they have and go aisle by aisle. Part of that is just me being there less but it’s also exactly what you said. The store is more spacious and comfortable and encourages you to spend more time there. TLDR; If Walmart and Target were equivalent in frequency and cost then the experience in store would make Target my absolute go to but at the end of the day Walmart is closer to my house and cheaper. It makes so much sense that Target is worth talking about and posting about where Walmart is just a place where people silently shop.

I might have another theory as to why Walmart's demographic is older: my grandmother gets a rewards card from her insurance (Medicaid/ medicare) that she can use ONLY at Walmart. She complains often that she would like to shop at other "nicer" stores with fresher produce but with her limited mobility & even more limited income it's just more convenient to get everything at Walmart. I've tried getting her to try ordering groceries on her phone for delivery but she likes the experience of going out & physically picking out her own groceries (especially produce)

Especially since Costco on the surface seems to be marketed towards those with less financial means, but it requires a buy in in the form of the annual membership and requires you to buy in bulk. There are also many Costco’s located in upper middle and upper class areas, and I know many upper income people who are eager to make use of their costco memberships to make sure they’re getting the best pricing. It seems Costco targets the price sensitive sector of the upper middle and upper class where Target targets (no pun intended) those who are price agnostic. Great video, Shawna!

I will go to Target instead of Walmart if I have to find something at a big chain box store that I can't find local or at the co-op I work at but mainly because Walmart has kind of sided politically with the right wing and target has at least in certain avenues taken a more left-leaning stance on things. That said I'm in getting the one item I can't find any place else and then I'm out the door. It's also worth noting that my mom does a lot of price shopping for anything and everything we need and Walmart stopped being the cheapest place for most things several years ago. It basically is hit or miss whether Target or Walmart is cheaper at least in our area. And a lot of times the sales at the grocery store even in the pharmacy aisle is genuinely cheaper than going to any of the big box stores.

Hi Shawna, with the holiday season coming up I was wondering if you'd ever make a video on christmas and consumerism? I don't think you have yet. I feel like there is so much pressure from companies and even society when it comes to gift giving. I love giving gifts to my friends and family, but dont like buying things new mainly because I dont want to contribute to overconsumption and waste. I personally feel like a thrifted gift (for example, I found a copy of one of my friends fav childrens books signed by the author) rather than something new and pricey is more meaningful and special, but im so worried people will think im just thrifting gifts cause im cheap and cant be bothered to buy them something new. Its a real struggle for me during the holidays and I often give into the pressure and buy many gifts that are brand new products. Im really curious about your thoughts on this since consumerism during the holidays often has less to do with our own desires for what we want to own, but rather worrying about how our gifts to other people might make them feel about us, or indicate how much we care for them.

Michigan lady here! Meijer is my first choice in general. Meijer is mostly in the midwest and can be larger than Walmart and is always cleaner, more stocked, and tidier than Walmart. And, depending on the location, Target can also be a hot mess. I think I consider the amount of options and quality before pricing. Experience also. I definitely have a couple "favorite" Target locations and a few I refuse to go into. I like to get groceries at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, a local market chain (Westborn), and Meijer. If I need decor or clothing, I go to Target and Meijer. The prices at Walmart are more affordable, however, you get what you pay for. Any clothing I have ever bought from Walmart falls apart in at least 6 months, while clothes I've bought from Target and Meijer (not counting any fast fashion or "trendy" pieces - I don't buy those) have lasted me years. But you've also got to be careful which how much decor you buy from Target at once or else your place will scream "Target staging" instead of your unique style. Target has a definite "esque" if you will with their decor even though it is extremely cute. If their were more Super Targets around, I think they might be more popular than Walmart. When I was a kid, I grew up in a city in NC where Walmart was the only department store option. It was THE place to be and it was terrible lol

While Winners has a big turn over, it's not a case of:Bored Go to Winners, its more like, need Something for my Seasonal wardrobe and a bag Caramel Drizzel, I feel lucky let's see what Winners has. Some influencers are saying Indigo is becoming Target. I love the Nota & Carta goods and have 3 pairs of Love & Lore PJs so might be on to something. Great Vidi 😎☕💋

For the past year or so I’ve been more aware of my own waste, reduced plastic use a lot and overall purchased less items. Your videos have also opened my eyes to even smaller stuff, like not giving in to fall trends. I did a no buy September that has extended to October and I’ve been generally successful! I feel like a better human overall. Also has opened me up to seeing the crude amount of cheap shit that’s all over everything all the time lol

I do feel the inclination to spend more time in a target due to the well organized clean stores. But due to my social anxiety I do not wander too much and still try to only get what I needed and get out relatively quickly, but not as quick as i would go through a walmart as i have had multiple anxiety attacks when going through walmart before due to their crowded stores. I think you are right on with having a coffee shop in their stores encoraging people to take their time and feel welcome.

Target has solid basics, some prices are actually cheaper than Walmart and it’s easier to do returns. Honestly I shop for groceries in a loop- Grocery Outlet, Winco, Walmart, the local Co-op, then if there’s something else on sale in the food section at target I’ll get it. I get all my workout clothes on clearance at target- so I do go there often and look around after work. I haven’t bought clothes at Walmart since they collaborated with Miley Cyrus when I was in middle school. I think Walmarts low prices- online store, app, and grocery pickup/being literally everywhere is why they are so popular. I’ve never seen one with a McDonald though- it’s usually subway, and I never see people eating there because Walmarts hot deli food is so cheap. Basically: I shop wherever the deals are best- I don’t care about much else anymore. I try to shop at Winco over Walmart because it’s employee owned, but they have way less locations. I can only shop the way I do (deal hunting/comparing) because I have a non traditional job where I’m constantly on the road during the day and can stop into a shop for 20 minutes randomly.

I recently realized that Walmart and Target prices aren’t too far off. I always thought that Target was for more boujie people and expensive. I’d honestly shop at Target more than Walmart if it were closer. My closest Target is 30 minutes away vs Walmart being 15. I do rush in and out of Walmart when I’m there because it’s always busy and the one near me just changed every self checkout to 15 items or less. I had over 15 items and had to wait in line over 20 minutes to check out with a person because there were only 4 lanes open (which is nothing new but now with eliminating self checkout I’ll no longer be shipping in store unless there are only 1 or 2 things I can’t find elsewhere). Had I known that I wouldn’t have went there to begin with. Target is cleaner AND I can walk in and smell coffee which absolutely gives me a comfy feeling. I was shocked that Target ranked so low on the list too.

45-year-old white lady here that lives in the United States. There is one Target in my area (it's a 20-25-minute drive for me) and the rare occasions I do go in there, it's a DISASTER. Shelves throughout the store are blocked with stacked carts of merchandise, empty of merchandise or both. Rarely there is not more than 1 actual register open and the self-checkout lanes have long lines. The clothing section is messy with clothes and hangers on the ground and stuff just isn't organized at all. The shoe department is also always a giant mess with shoes and shoe boxes all over the floor. It's just not a great shopping experience. I have 2 Super Walmarts in my area; one is 20 minutes away and the other is 9 minutes away. I find them to be much neater and cleaner and the shelves are (typically) decently stocked. They also have a decent garden center with houseplants at reasonable prices. I also find the online ordering and pickup or delivery options to be much better, so I tend to shop at Walmart especially if I have groceries and household/pet supplies on my shopping list.

Target in Australia is soooo different. Not nearly as many brands, and definitely no coffee shop. They have actually had to close a lot of their stores, and merge with Kmart (like our Walmart) to survive. Which is a shame. Because they had a really good line of petite clothes. I just don't think they differentiated themselves enough to be worth the extra money in today's financial climate.

Walmart has really been making improvements to be more like Target in recent years, like with their clothes and how they’re displaying them. Some Walmart stores now look like a department store in clothes, jewelry, and accessories sections. Target would and could have more locations, but they refuse to put stores with certain populations. There’s a town less than an hour from me that have been trying to get one for at least a decade, but their population isn’t high enough.

honestly one of the main reasons I love it is that it has basically everything I need 🤷🏼‍♀️ I genuinely like their clothes and shoes, I can buy home stuff there, groceries, medicine, makeup, cleaning stuff, it’s just the easiest place to go. plus it’s well organized, easy to find stuff, and there’s always deals in the app. the downside of all that is that it’s easy to over-consume - but if you have self-control and don’t constantly buy unnecessary things, then you’re fine 👌🏻

I am at Target right now. I love everything about this store...except for the checkout. It's unreal how bad they are at managing customers. But, that said, I love everything else. I'm from Minnesota and I've been coming here since I was a baby, so perhaps I'm a bit partial...but there's really nothing like it. Walmart doesn't even compare. When I lived overseas, there was no Target, and there was no store that came even remotely close to the quality and experience. They're everywhere; it has everything; and it's such a pleasure to shop there. One of my happiest moments coming home was being able to finally shop at Target again.

The town I grew up in had an intersection with a Target, a Kmart, and a Cub Foods that were all pretty comparable in terms of size and available products. If I ever got a vote in where we went shopping, I'd pick Target. In hindsight, I realize that it mainly had to do with the sensory overload I experienced in other stores. The Target was usually less busy, had less harsh lighting, and the cart wheels didn't all squeak and rattle and make my skin crawl. 😂 But the Target I live near now feels like a mall tbh. It's HUGE and only a sliver of it is groceries. I never go there to get groceries anymore. I go there to wander around when it's dangerously cold outside and maybe I'll buy a lip balm or something. It's not really a store it's an experience lol

Walmart was able to stay open in my area over Target. Too many kept on stealing from Target and Target can’t really do anything about it until they catch them in the act and Walmart at my area sells guns (which I think is the most difference between Target/Walmart) and I think they might be phasing out. There are more than enough people wanting buying guns than people stealing from Target ig in my area. As someone in the states, Target is appealing to middle class white americans because it's considered a step up from walmart. And for some reason shopping at walmart is associated with poverty. Me personally, I do all my shopping at a local grocery store like Kroger or Ralph's, and only go to target for specific items like a specific hair product that other stores don't always carry.

I still remember a time from before social media, where target was a literal nobody (in the late 2000s, maybe I'm dating myself lol). There was a target in our local town center (and we were proper like suburb LA County) and it was pretty dumpy with very little foot traffic. And then at some point I just remember there was like a rebrand or something bc suddenly it was cooler and more "tar-jay" and between the remodel and stuff, it was suddenly more "aesthetic". On the other hand, before Walmart fresh or like the produce section became a thing, I remembered walmart as very clean and bright and fairly comfortable. I feel like after Walmart became more and more "the place you can get everything" including groceries, it definitely became more cramped and a lot messier. These days I really frequent either, but my impression of both is still "Walmart will have what I need" and "target is just for browsing bc it's pretty expensive for basic items and only stocks items they think I need" lol. Target is for browsing and not buying. Every time the Target marketing gets me with an impulse, I look at the register lines and I'm like, not interested in waiting in line to pay $10.

They put in a Target near me when I was in about middle school, before that I had no idea what it was. But I have to say, even at that young age and with no social media, I could discern a massive quality difference between the products & store atmosphere compared to Walmart. We made regular trips to Target just to browse, which is not something we would do at Walmart. Walmart felt very utilitarian, Target felt aesthetic. That being said though, there have been multiple times where I couldn't find something I actually needed at Target and had to go to Walmart to get it.

Especially when the atmosphere is similar to Walmart.

The stuff these stores sell makes a difference too -- Walmart is MONSTROUS, there are stores everywhere, and it's really the cheapest option for groceries almost everywhere, so people visit it once a week or more. I HATE shopping at WallyWorld, but it's often 25% cheaper than lots of my local supermarkets, depending on where I am. Amazon is also gigantic, but it's getting progressively enshittified, so it's probably dropping -- if you're buying something other than groceries, you want to be able to touch it, try it on, and take it back if it doesn't work -- and the others are propped up by the type of stuff they sell. Home Depot sells big expensive items like drywall and bandsaws and lawnmowers, so their sales are bolstered by that. Costco is a cult, and once you pay for the membership you buy everything there -- or everything feasible.

Target used to cheaper than my local store while also having 'nicer' items. Now, the quality has fallen, but in my rural area we can still get things at our local target that we can't get anywhere else. I haven’t finished the whole video but… Walmarts down here have Subways instead of McDonalds. They smell like low quality cold cuts, it permeates the whole store. To me, it smells gross. Target smells like baked goods and coffee, so if it makes sense for my shopping list & budget (which is always more food focused than other goods) I will go to Target. Not just because of the smell but it is a more pleasant experience overall. But sometimes, you just have to go to Walmart 🙄 not to mention the frustration of how Walmart locks so much stuff behind glass and it’s nearly impossible to find someone to retrieve the item you need.

Growing up Target was always a “special” thing. The only real time we had a purpose to go to Target was maybe back to school shopping (stationary). But other than that it usually was some place I rarely went and if we went my mom would give a one toy/ clothing etc rule. For my family and many of my friends it was too expensive for casual shopping. And now as an adult I still don’t feel comfortable shelling out more money than I need to pay. But that’s just me.
