I think I might be too cheap to be good at film photography. I have never used a lab, started developing with c41, and some how I still really enjoy it. Fragged a couple rolls a long the way and loading the rolls in the dark is a unique kind of torture, but when you get it out of the tank and see images spooling off the reels, it's super satisfying!

Another factor (that probably won't contribute all that much after all the others you've already mentioned) is related to the design of the tanks. In small labs, color is done mostly using Jobo units these days and since these are made for rotary processing, they're not needed to be filled with chemicals as the film will come in contact with the chemical at the bottom of the tank as the tank is being rotated. Because of this, a very small amount of chemicals are enough to develop a roll of film. Jobo tanks use about 120-150ml for a roll of 135 or 120 film, depending on the exact model of the tank. In a Paterson tank, typically used for black and white film, you'd need 300ml for 135 and 500ml for 120.

At my local lab they're the same price. I guess they have B/W machines and use the same developer for all of them. Home development is cheaper either way, so that's what I do for all my film.

Here in Europe its always more for b/w and many people dont know why, this is why I made this video. I knew that some cases would fit the story here, but Im glad to heard that its nlt the case all over.

@@NicosPhotographyShow I wonder in which cities these good labs are in Europe, I can say I haven't found a reliable one yet.. one has a good development but they frequently scratch films and the costumer service is horrendous, the other one I tried develops TriX with ilford developer and makes me not wanna shoot it any more (too much contrast and grain) and on at least 5 films they ruined the last image

Hi Nico, would Ilford XP2 a C41 process B&W Film have an issue with digital ice when scanned, as you alluded to with silver based films have ? As usual you have great ideas about 📸👍thanks.
@keithswindell6212
@keithswindell6212 4 жыл бұрын
No, as with any C-41 film all of the silver is removed leaving behind only the color dyes during the development process. In the case of the B&W C-41 films the dyes are grey not colored.

My understanding was that colour could be bulk processed. So they can run all ISOs and films through colour at the same time, but each black and white film type and ISO has to be done on their own. You can't develop the HP5 with the Berlin Kino, like you can with the Ektar, Gold and Fujicolor. Which is what you said but simpler.

Hey Nico this was informative, thanks. I ususally devolpe B&W at home and color I send out. For your US customers, I can suggest Samy's Camera in LA, they $6.00 (plus tax 10%) a roill for either for devolping only same price color or B&W. In Los Angeles this is a good price.

Thanks for the suggestion but even cheaper is Andrew's Analog service center, based out of Philly, PA. Just $5 per roll, all B&W or C-41. You can find them at needfilmdeveloped.com

If you shoot B&W, just develop the film yourself. It's a piece of cake, the kit isn't expensive, and it gives you total control over the process.

I've personally just started that myself. If you really worried you can get Cinestill DF96 which is a mono bath (Single Stage Process)

I agree, but sometimes at the very beginning all of the process is scary. And I think its fine to rely on a lab until you gain confidence.

Most labs here charge the same price, but this means there is no choice on which developer you would like used. I usually ask, and then go with the lab that uses the developer I would prefer, of course choice is extremely limited. This is one of the reasons I would like to develop my own BW, haven't got there yet but hopefully some day soon. Colour is easy, I have a small lab that I prefer, they do a great job with the least amount of dust and scratches on the negs. I never have film scanned, so I am not sure what that's like, I scan my own.
@NicosPhotographyShow

BUT, it's much cheaper to develop your film at home especially B&W. Cinestill df96 is really simple and easy. In fact it is the only developer out there that you can use any B&W film using the same time like color. If you haven't checked out this developer/fix from Cinestill you should give it a try

@@NicosPhotographyShow It also depends, I know Carmencita lab in Europe is very nice with BW, they develop it on a roll by roll basis, but there a plenty labs in Netherlands, Belgium area that are very lazy in this and they throw it all in a single batch. Thank you for your video's Nico.
