@lananieves45954 жыл бұрын
Anyone who has worn these can tell you they're worth it. I've been wearing them for over 30 years, and I keep going back. Once you wear them in, they're like walking on air, the way they mold to your feet. They also offer a surprising amount of arch support for something so light and simple-looking. I've had both the leather and the faux leather. The faux are about as good as vegan leather is ever going to get, but the leather ones definitely have a warmer feel to them, if that makes sense. I have a pair of their shoes - not beautiful things, but so incredibly comfortable.

you also have to consider, that here in germany cork is considered to be a pretty expensive material. it is probably much more pricey than the leather portion of the shoe. also, birkenstock pumps loads of money into orthopedic research. if you do a comparison between knock-off and the original in this case, you probably want to include a wear test.

To be fair to the EVA sole: Birkenstocks were originally designed as a house shoe. Won't wear out fast if you're walking on a wooden floor.
@HipposHateWater Жыл бұрын
That's basically what I use mine as. But it's not the EVA outsole that deters me from wearing them outside, it's the deeply cupped, open sole. (my linear gait loves to flick rocks and other bits up and down into that footbed, and it's too deep for debris to naturally work it's way out again like with much more open footwear such as flip-flops or raramuri-style huaraches.)
@ryansmith84 жыл бұрын
My work shoes are made by Birkenstock. They're single-piece molded rubber clogs with a removable cork insole. Slip resistant, oil resistant, completely waterproof, and very easy to clean and sanitize as the single-piece molded construction means there are no stitches or seams for dirt to accumulate in. The insole is extremely supportive too. The cork insole is typically the first thing to wear out on them. They even sell replacement insoles for them for that reason. You can extend the life of the insoles by removing them and letting them air out overnight though. I know those probably sound like some really odd construction and design choices, but everything I just said about them is why they're a fairly popular choice among kitchen and hospital workers. Especially the ease of cleaning them. I can remove the insoles and just clean them under running water or spray them with a hose. I probably sound like I'm spamming for them at this point, but I just know about them because I've worn them working in kitchens for about a decade now lol. You get really familiar with a shoe model when you wear them that long lol. The Super Birki and Profi Birki are the model names for their professional line. There's actually an entire market segment consisting of work shoes designed for and marketed to doctors, nurses, and chefs. Birkenstock, Dansko, Merrell, Crocs, Skechers, Sanita, and Klogs all compete in this space at various price points. It's a market that really doesn't get talked about much on KZbin or Reddit because it's this super niche thing geared towards a small number of professions who share some specific footwear needs. That, and the shoes have no fashion application because, honestly, kitchen shoes are fucking ugly.

Also, it comes in only three colors: black, dark brown and dark blue, so this answers my question about bartenders and waiters.
@Khamomil4 жыл бұрын
I bought a pair of white clogs with contoured insoles to work in my own kitchen and they're 100x uglier and not in one single molded piece so dirt gets lodged in seams. Birkenstock back in the 60s were an anti-fashion statement because they were ugly compared to the prevailing shoe fashion. Look at the brand Ugg, isn't its name a shortened way of saying Ugly? But comfort is what the brand's buyers are looking for, ahead of style, and it comes full circle when commercial success gives it an aura of beauty. I've been wearing birkies for more than 30 years (milanos -- the ones with the heel strap) and the reason is comfort and great arch support. They take a few weeks of wearing to break in the footbeds but once you get past the pain phase you can stand around on them for years and your feet will love them. (Protip: if they have the leather footbeds, wear socks! -- they're not meant for bare feet! -- they are indoor shoes for folks on their feet all day.) They do have models meant for outdoors or in the garden. If you don't let the soles wear through to the cork bed they can be pretty cheaply resoled. (so you don't have to endure the breakin pain a second time!) Even if you do wear through to the cork, though, a cobbler can rebuild the cork matrix if it's not too badly split or worn. If you buy a tube of Barge cement, you can apply it to any splits around the edge of the shoe to keep water and dirt out of the cork matrix... and make them go farther between resoles. I love these sandals. Not everyone does, and I don't think they're meant for everyone, though.

I'm no stranger to barefoot footwear or genuinely supportive insoles like Powersteps/Superfeet, and for a sec even I was genuinely wondering if it was a mistake to buy my Birks at first. Something about that break-in period just felt so contrary to the normal process with traditional shoes or sneakers. That discomfort went away after about week 3-4 (of use as a summertime house slipper), but something about that break-in felt very abnormal and misleading at first, lol. Just have faith and push through, people. Don't be afraid to take a break or demote it to a slipper until things improve.

It is amazing that every piece of cork sheeting, hot cork (shoes) and the such is simply a byproduct of the wine cork industry. They use the solid cork for bottles. The rest gets sold and ground up and mixed with latex or other binders. Oh, yes. I have repaired my 25 year old Birkies. I simply glued new cork onto the toe and heel (where I have damaged it) with Master's contact cement. When it was dry I shaped with sandpaper. A thin layer of white glue acts like a sealer. The one thing I would say about them is that there insoles don't mould to your feet the way a cork foot bed can and I would caution people who are not used to wearing shoes with proper arches they may take rather more getting used to. There was definitely a break in period when I first started wearing Birkenstock's but I'm never going back.

Totally worth it. My mom, a nurse that wore Birkenstocks, bought me a pair of their sandals when I was pregnant. My feet swole and grew a whole size. They were the only shoes I wore for a year until one of the buckles broke off. They are so ugly and expensive but so comfortable. She laughed in my face when I asked for another pair. My sister and I had babies at the same time and she had 2 grandbabies to spoil. I didn't really need them anymore but I wanted them.

I started wearing my Arizona Birkies last year. I used to wear Adidas comfort slides. But after awhile, my feet would start to hurt while wearing them while cleaning my house, walking my dog, doing errands, etc. Especially my heels. I caved in and bought the Birkies. Since I worked from home, I broke them in quickly. And let me tell you this - my feet never felt tired or achy :) I wear them every day and have fallen in love with them.

I only use mine as indoor shoes and they have no sign of the sole wearing. They have started to break but they must be like 10 years old if not more.

They are meant to break in with heat, which happen from you just wearing them all the time. But Maybe if you leave them outside on a hot day and then wear them, they should break in much faster.
@smasheduppumpkinette4 жыл бұрын
Gilberto Flores - I think they meant break - as in fall apart rather than break in. I have a 13 year old pair that are still going strong but you can tell the cork is starting to get old and the leather is also torn a little on stress points. It’s due to the age of the shoes and the way materials naturally break down over time.

I like Birkenstock. They are surprisingly durable. The cork didn't fall apart when I got caught in a downpour a few times. They can be easily repaired. My cobbler has no issues with order all the replacement parts. They are not as expensive as other orthopedic brands that support wide flat feet.

Judging by he difficulty you had in ripping them apart, they appear to be made pretty damn good. Not crazy about the style, but probably worth the money. 👍

This was the only concern I had that made me go with the OG footbed two years ago. I was worried that foam could break down prematurely and form blister-like separations between the upper suede "skin" and the base footbed after a couple years of wear. (Still have no clue if that's an appreciable possibility)
@shellya6212 Жыл бұрын
@@HipposHateWater they do wear out faster, but there is absolutely no break in pain so I guess it depends on how long you want them to last and how much pain you're willing to endure for the savings.

I have been wearing Birkenstock shoes for over 40 years with two downsides when they are worn out the shoe is flat hurts to walk in (new is like walking on clouds and springs - a soft bouncy shoe with little to no discomfit to feet, legs, and back something no other shoe has done for me) in about 2 years of daily use and the other is I can not wear any other normal shoe because no other normal shoe is as comfortable to wear, and my feet are now too wide I cannot find a shoe as wide as Birkenstock I did look! And Birkenstock has a new sole for the shoe very sweet I love this shoe, I would pay double the price if asked too my feet are that important to me, I see the shoe as cheap to buy! I almost forget there is a deeper reason as to why Birkenstock made the shoe the way it is today you touch on it some, but you did leave a lot out, but a great video nonetheless thumbs up!
@chrisbentley47634 жыл бұрын
I always find they fail on the sides where the leather meets the cork sides. Maybe they should have a layer of jute there too. Would love to hear your thoughts. Great video(s)!

Yes, they do but it takes over a decade for it to happen, at least in my experience. I've worn out several pairs of the Paris style, that Mary Jane style shoe they don't make anymore. I really love the styles with the soft footbed. Nothing beats them.

I enjoyed your video. I started wearing Birkenstocks in the 90's, when they had a line called "Tatami" which had a high arch. I have plantar fasciitis and bad knees and have high arched custom orthotics. The Tatamis were the only flat sandals I could wear. Unfortunately, Birkenstock decided to discontinue/sold off the line, then they discontinued the high arch foot bed for repairs. My shoe repair person said they also changed the glue, so that it is impossible to peal back the leather to add material to create a higher arch on the "normal" Birkenstocks. This last is evident in your struggle to deconstruct the shoe. I have a few pairs I bring out for summer, but have moved to Finn Comfort because I can remove the foot bed and insert my orthotics. Yes, I know, they have a beautiful foot bed, but I need higher arch support.

hannah west that's awesome to hear you had your Arizona's for 7 years. I have Arizona's too. I had two pairs one with regular footbed and one with Softbed. I had mine since year 1993 I just take him in and get them resoled and they still hanging straw. I have to keep them up cuz these are the only Footwear that I can wear. I got very very wide feet 4 EEEE WITH fat wide toe. Back around year 1991 When I was young my feet kept getting wide and would not fit in my shoes no more I was in high school and I will walk around School Barefoot 👣because my feet will hurt inside shoe. School said I couldn't walk barefoot👣 but I needed some type of Footwear. Ended up cutting where my 5th toe would be. My 4th and 5th toe will be sticking out of the side of the shoe. I got laughed at. It was embarrassing cuz I couldn't do nothing about it. One day after school let out One of my teachers felt bad and came to school one day wearing his Birkenstocks barefooted so I can see how wide his feet were. I was shocked. He helped me and told me about Birkenstocks is what I need .That's when I bought my first pair of Birkenstocks. Having very very wide feet sucks cuz I can not wear no shoes I have to wear Birkenstocks year round. My 5 toe may B off the foot bed but my feet do not hurt. Love Birkenstocks.

I used to not like Birks. I thought they were lame. Then I started wearing a pair almost every day. I forgot how damn comfortable they were from when I last had a pair as a kid. Easily the best sandal out there if you are looking for something that is not a flip flop. I've worn the same pair of Birks for the past 7 years, but in that same time frame I've gone through 4 pairs of Rainbows and a bunch of other pairs of sneakers. Birks just don't die if you do the bare minimum to keep the cork sealed and don't drag your feet. I will always have a pair of Birks now. Honestly I think they are the only footwear company that makes something that just lasts.
