he was the most popular starter even before that which is why he got special treatment in the anime. in reality the answer to Charizard's fame is simple. pokemon was originally targeted towards little boys and a dragon appeals to little boys more than a turtle or frog. also the color red has a huge effect on our psychology due to it being the first color our brain recognizes so charizard being the cover pokemon for the red version which sold way more than the green or blue versions likely also played a role.

Ironically I started with Red[[parents got it, didn’t pick the version myself]] back in 1998 but I picked Squirtle as my starter. Never regretted it. Blastoise is badass and Squirtle and Wartortle are adorable. Especially Squirtle as the old sprite was so cute which made me pick him at the time.

The fact it was the only Kanto starters that Ash evolved had a big part of it. If it remained a Charmander and Ash had evolved either Squirtle or Bulbasaur to their final forms instead I think it would have made a difference. Also it was getting special treatment from even the early days when it got it's shiny changed from purple to black.

the thing people dont realize is the reason charizard got special treatment in the anime and tcg is because he was already the most popular of the three starters. the tcg and anime wanted to capitalize on his popularity which is where the special treatment he got comes from. the initial reason for his popularity is simple. first pokemon was targeted towards young boys and to young boys a dragon will always be cooler than a turtle or frog. second the color red has a large impact on our psychology being the first color our brains recognize and being a warning color so kids were already pre programed to be more likely to pick the red or blue Pokémon (blue because it is the most popular color). also the fact that red is the first color our brain recognizes means people are more likely to notice and buy the red version of the game when shopping and since charizard is the Pokémon on that version kids are going to be more likely to pick Charmander as their starter since they will associate him with their version of the game. theirs tons of psychological reasons for Charizard's popularity over the other two and theirs even reasons why venasaur is the least popular of the three but whats important to note is that this does not make the other two worse or Charizard better. i myself liked blastoise more when i was growing up because i wanted to be a marine biologist and liked the color blue. i only changed to Charizard approaching my teen years because my taste changed. i also think of the three venasaur had the best design (fun fact the Pokémon company also liked venasaurs design alot which is why they had red and green instead of red and blue versions). theirs tons of reasons to like all three of the starters and none are objectively better or worse than the others but Charizard had a head start due to the demographic the games were targeted towards and little quirks in our psychology.

For me when i was younger I chose charizard primarily for designed, now if I play Gen 1 I learned Arcanine is a better option. Literally gen1 had some great designs of pokemon but the game play was odd and glitchy but still great to play.

Don't forget that the devs made Leon, the Champion of the Galar region, have Charizard as his ace and gave it a bad-ass Gigantimax. That would explain why Scarlet and Violet are not allowing any other starters save the ones you get in the game: Fuecoco would be dropped in a toilet ASAP if Charmander was allowed to roam free. I think this will be the first generation and not the last which bans any starter Pokemon save the local ones because of how Charizard would be used on everyone's team. I plead the fifth, Pokemon Red was my first Pokemon game too(but not because of Charizard - it was because the anime made me love Arbok. ^_^)

The whole point of the starters was to pick your own companion, there was no right or wrong. All starters were equally strong in their own ways and you got to choose which suited you. But then Charizard got two megas, earlier access in SwSh, to be the ace of Leon in gen 8, and get more attention from the Pokemon company than Blastoise and Venusaur. Getting this treatment undermined the equality of the starters, as Charizard now has a distinct advantage over the others. It's also kind of unfair for people (like me) who prefer the other two starters more. Charizard looks cool and all, but other Pokemon (not just the Kanto or starter Pokemon) deserve the spotlight once in a while.

Charizard got that special treatment because back when all things were equal Charizard still outshone the other two for various reasons. in fact one of the reasons Charizard got special treatment in the anime being the only one of ashes starters to fully evolve and one of the reasons he got special treatment in the tcg having the most hp is because as early as his first appearance in the games he was already the fan favorite. some of the reasons behind this is because the games were targeted towards young boys and a fire breathing dragon appeals to young boys more than a turtle and frog do. and the fact that Charizard's color was red which psychologically has an impact on our choices since red is the first color our brain recognizes. there are other reasons too like how the main character is named red so Charizard had a headstart from the beginning being automatically associated with the player character and more but at the end of the day Charizard was destined to rise above the others and no amount of perceived equality among the three starters would change that.

I love Charizard, but I love it less now than I used to. Side note: The card was a glass cannon, and you REALLY had to build your deck around it. Blastoise supported the rest of your mons, so it was a more useful strategy to incorporate into your deck. Didn't care about Venasaur.

Charizard is a absolutely awesome Pokémon but he’s one of those Pokémon that of stale after awhile. Like before In Gen 1-5 he was treated fairly among other starters but 6-8 it and Greninja kind of overshadows the other starters completely which is kind of unfair. Pokémon like Lucario or Zoroark makes sense to get spotlight because it’s focusing on them alone but Charizard is part of a trio so it ruins the other two completely since Charizard is hogging the spotlight.

I even feel like they put more effort into the designs of Mega Charizard, with Venusaur and Blastoise being more of a “I suppose we better give megas to these guys as well” mentality. Of all three starters Blastoise is still my favourite but I prefer the look of Mega Charizard X. Mega Blastoise is ok but they screwed up by not not giving it a secondary typing, which I feel should have been the steel type given it’s aesthetic as a giant tank. They could have even really gone there and gave it a red colouring to represent a fire engine. Just imagine Mega Blastoise but now with a fire engine red coloured shell and a firefighters helmet on its head

Charizard is my Favorite Pokemon. It has nothing to do with any of these reasons though. Its because he was my FIRST pokemon. I didint know an anime, or any game past GEN 1 existed till I was 8 years old (pokemon came out before I was born). My first game was Pokemon Red. And I continued off my Uncles Save. And when I got scared at a giant Rock Snake comming out to attack me, Charizard was the one who came out and kicked its ass. When G1 starters are oferred in a game I always pick Bulbasaur as I think it has the best design of the original trio, and if I was ranking all of the starters the Charizard line would be somewhere in the middle.

I think the biggest reason for Charizard's enduring popularity was because of the anime. Sure, the first version of a game always seems to be the most popular version anyway but you don't see a bunch of the other starters continually get all this love. However, because the anime featured Charizard particularly favorably it made a big impression on the millions and millions of young watchers which then translated to other media. Another popular starter is Greninja who, like Charizard, was given an extra spotlight in the anime and even a brand-new form which was later introduced in the video games. My point is that we can't forget that the REASON why Pokemon in general is so popular is BECAUSE of it's trans-media empire where they can introduce something in one place and then further expand upon it in another and then feed off each other.

I myself find Charizard a holder of too much fame for so many parts of the fanbase. I don't mind the fact it holds so much fame that it brings GameFreak and Nintendo more money, but I also feel that way about Pikachu, being one of the rare people who find Raichu a cooler Pokemon in general than Pikachu. Maybe that's part of my preference of using not only Pokemon that don't double types in the teams but also only Pokemon that I like the appearance of more. If I ever did do a playthrough of Gen 1, or at least a Kanto run that isn't Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold or SoulSilver my playthrough would hold... In gen 1 rewind back to the late 90s... charizard base set card was the most powerful in the tcg... best looking starter in red and blue games... in anime charmander was one of ash's go to pokemon helping him a lot like warming him and the rest of his pokemon up in a snowy cave to helping catch pokekon and obtain a few of his first badges... then it evolved into chameleon... Ash already had a trouble pokemon in primeape until he gave it away... chameleon couldn't replace primape as the comic character so they evolved chameleon into charizard and made him disobedient and lazy but a tank anytime charizard battled eg vs Blaine and magmar you knew it was going to be an awesome match even though Ash used to get flamethrowerd everytime until the orange island saga where charizard became frozen and Ash nursed it back to health which made charizard remember Ash loves him and isn't just his master but his friend too... then once charizard started to listen that was it ash's best pokemon hands down then it went for hyper training at charizard Valley... only come back for the boss fights, entei, Gary etc... THIS is why charizard is fan fave!!!! He has more story than pikachu...

I think Charizard's popularity came to its controversial typing. People really wanted it to be dragon type because of simply how it looks but it's not. But even if that's the case, people still loved it for what it is.

I think that's definitely at least partially true, and it's likely a big part of the reason why they made one of it's two mega evolutions part dragon type. But for me personally, I think that seeing it in the anime as one of Ash's star Pokemon, being his only one of them to evolve, and then go through a period of being disobedient before eventually learning to respect it's trainer again, then after that became one of the strongest Pokemon Ash owned was a great storyline that made people who followed it love it even more. It should also be mentioned that it's basically the mascot of the TCG due to how many different versions of it are constantly getting printed every few sets, the recent Pokemon Go set even had 2 different Charizard cards in it that you had the chance to pull

Personally, I think Charizard looks cool. But, I do get why some people complain that it's overrepresented in the anime, games, etc. If something is popular, then of course it makes sense to give the fans what they want. However, when it's the only Kanto starter to get 2 megas, specifically chosen for Smash 4 (yes I understand there were limitations), and the ace for 2/8 of the Masters, it's a bit excessive and hard to deny there's some special treatment there. Once again, I DO think Charizard is great, but there's also too much of a good thing.

Ash's Charizard I think for sure is what solidified the Pokemon's popularity as a whole. Because eventhough Ash's Charizard was a pain, fans were still invested. And once Ash's Charizard started listening to him, the sky was officially the limit regarding the popularity of Charizard in general. Looking back at the anime, it's the Pokemon that I believe Ash reunited with the most after it's release. The 3rd Movie, the 8th Johto Gym, The Johto League, The first Battle Frontier Brain, the last Battle Frontier Brain, and then it began traveling with Ash in Unova. And speaking of the 3rd Movie, Ash's Charizard remains the only Pokemon of his to have a significant role in one of the movies despite not actually traveling with Ash at the time of the movie. That right there is a major sign of it's popularity.

First alain having on ( a new main character having a charizard), then the red hair xy rival. It began to worsen for me after the sun-moon ride pokemon and kiawe having one in the anime. The final straw for my new-found hatred was leon, the undefeated Gary stu champion (who was easy as cake to beat) having charizard as his ace. Squirtle/blastoise is only a single type Pokémon but it has these giant cannons on its back that shoot hydro pumps out of is insane, combined with rapid spin (in the anime) and it’s pretty much unbeatable other than type advantages obviously.

People often complain about Charizard getting a lot of attention from gamefreak but to me that isn't the problem, the real problem is that most of the other starters don't get as much attention. The only ones that gets almost as much attention as Charizard are Venasaur and Blastoise but even they get shafted in favour of Charizard sometimes, like in X and Y were Charizard got two Mega forms while the other two only got one or in Sword and Shield where Charizard is the only Kanto starter in the base game while Venasaur and Blastoise has to wait for dlc but at the very least all three of them got Gigantamax forms. My thoughts are like yours, I like Charizard, think it's overrated, I can see where the fans are coming from and it makes The Pokémon Company money. Strangely I've only used a Charizard once and that was in a playthrough of Ultra Moon where it did ok. not the greatest Pokémon I've used but fine enough.

My love for Charizard comes from my experiences and misunderstandings of pokemon rather than, its popularity (which I was honestly oblivious to because I was in elementary school at the time and all of my peers thought they were too old for pokemon). When I was little I, for some reason, believed you HAD to pick the starter on the cover/title screen and that Prof.Oak would tell you that you couldn't pick either of the other two (despite him asking you to pick one. I was kinda dumb). I had pokemon Leaf Green at the time (my brother had Fire Red) so I naturally always picked Bulbasaur every time I would do a new playthrough. Something else I believed, due to experience with my playthroughs and watching the playthroughs of my brother and cousins, was that your starter could only be male and if you wanted a female, you had to breed it (but I didn't know how breeding worked at the time so I never tried). What I believed about pokemon ended up being proven wrong, however, when my brother chose Squirtle for one of his playthroughs and it blew my little mind. I restarted my Leaf Green and chose Charmander for the first time and to my surprise, it was female (this, of course, started a phase where ALL my pokemon HAD to be female. That phase is long over). TL;DR I love Charizard because, it helped me experience pokemon in a way I didn't think possible

Charizard is my favorite Pokémon since day one in franchise being the first Pokémon of my life! He is cool, strong and a great partner to the Pokémon adventure! Charizard has great new forms being one of best Pokémon to Game Freak implement all those new mechanics with new forms to reinvent the Pokémon (due to Charizard simple but awesome design). It has great moments in Pokémon animations under ownership of Ash, Alain, Leon or Red. It has great cards with incredible artwork as well. Charizard looks like a dragon and was easily accessible. Who didn't want their own dragon growing up? As I get older I see more and more of Charizard's flaws and use him less in battle... But, he'll always be my favorite pokemon. Nothing will ever compare to the excitement I had when he reached the final evolution.

Also, Ash had to earn Charizard's respect. It wasn't easy, but once he did Charizard saved his ass over and over again. Like Pikachu, Charizard didn't just obey Ash, they grew to love him and respect him. Their was a friendship there that made me fall in love with Charizard.

I think it's related to anime i mean the same reason sceptile is most liked in hoene games infernape in sinnoh greninja in kalos and incineroar in alola and in remaining gens ash never got any fully evolved starter so no particularly favourite. Man, I LOVE Charizard, he's just my favorite Pokémon of all time, even though first game I played was Crystal and not Red, I can't not cherish him, I always choose him as starter in the Kanto region based games and I always have him on my teams of the other games, I've always loved and felt attracted to dragons since kid and I don't care what others say about him, he's just perfect, maybe not the strongest, but still absolutely worth it imo, I also find him very inspiring to me, I'll always love him 🔥🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

I love Charizard. When I first played Pokemon Blue I had a hard time choosing between Charmander or Squirtle. I considered Squirtle because I love aquatic animals but I chose Charmander because I wanted Charizard. I've always loved dragons since I was a kid. I still hold great affection for Charizard. When I see Charizard merch especially at conventions I get excited. As a Pokemon it's great. Gamewise not so much. For a fire type it has a great move pool but it's frail compared to some of other Pokemon. All in all. Charizard has a special place in my heart because it was the very first starter I ever chose and would choose Charmander again over other starters I love like Chimchar and Treecko.

It seems being popular is quite polarizing: on the one hand, there will be plenty of people who love something that's popular and won't get tired of seeing it get the spotlight constantly because they think it deserves it. On the other hand, there are always people who will be outspoken about something being "too popular" because it means that other things don't get the same kind of attention, and with a franchise as huge and successful as Pokemon, it makes sense that there would be people with ad strong of feelings about this topic as there are

While I understand people's frustrations, I kind of owe Charizard and its over-rated-ness, because Charizard and its advertising is the reason I'm a Pokemon fan. See, despite being a kid during the height of Pokemon mania, I really missed the boat on this franchise initially. I just really didn't like the anime back then; still don't, actually. And though fans assured me the games and anime were different, I didn't play video games, especially handhelds, so no adults ever thought to get it for me. Many years and 6 generations down the line, a friend finally convinced me to watch Pokemon: Origins, the mini-series about Red and his Charizard, to try and convince me I would actually like the plots of the games. And I ended up loving it. Desperate to play the game it was based on, I dived into a FireRed emulator, and I've been hooked on Pokemon ever since (only a decade late to the party) There's a number of reasons I credit Charizard for this all happening. For one thing, Red and Charizard's relationship was one of the things I enjoyed about that mini-series. But even setting that aside, Charizard was also so popular that it had been familiar to me even before I watched the mini-series, making the Pokemon universe feel a bit more accessible by journeying with one of the few Pokemon I already knew. I'm also a dragon fan, so I was predisposed to like it, I feel. But mostly, I'm not sure Origins would have even existed if it hadn't been used as one big commercial for Mega evolution and, in particular, Mega Charizard X. So yeah, I got hooked on Pokemon because I watched an overly-long commercial for one of Charizard's specialty power-ups. I get why people are sick of the winged fire lizard, but I can't be mad when it's the reason I'm even here

Hey Mystic, big fan of your channel. I think it’d be pretty cool if you made a “Remastered” Radical Red best team. There’s been a lot of changes to the game since you made the best team. Hisuian versions and Lv. 100 moves are just some. Typhlosion is no longer one of the best Pokémon for Radical Red. While you can get it easily, It learns Eruption at Lv. 100 now, after the league. You cant even breed for an egg move. The Hisuian Typhlosion gets it, but it doesn’t get Blazing Soul. Anyway, I just thought it’d be cool for you to do this idea.
