Makes a lot of sense. Charmeleon was offended that Ash would ask him to throw a battle to a Paras. Charmeleon lost respect for Ash right there. Then he gets zapped by Pikachu and that just pisses him off more. The only battle that I can remember Charizard obeying Ash was the Magmar battle, probably because Charizard felt that Magmar was a worthy challenge. It wasn’t until Charizard got his butt whooped that he realized he wasn’t as strong as he thought he was, and to have Ash stay up with him all night proved to Charizard that Ash wants to compete and win just as much as Charizard does.

@onijester566 жыл бұрын
Even if we accept that the gym leader is a typical paid position and not a representation of one's skill and power as a trainer, note how Ash earns his various badges. Boulder Badge: He wins the fight, hitting Onix with a "Surf" from a mildly over-leveled Pikachu. Cascade Badge: He holds his own in the fight, is in a winning position, and still has the type-advantage Pokemon (Pikachu, who has the type advantage and is still over-leveled) left when Team Rocket interrupts. Admittedly this is against Misty, but we do see Brock select a smaller and arguably weaker team (only 2 Pokemon, one being a goddamn Geodude) to test out the new trainer so Misty is an appropriate challenge for Ash. Thunder Badge: Even with Raichu's base speed being higher than Pikachu's, IV's and EV's and Nature can potentially allow Ash's Pikachu to be faster than Surge's Raichu. This is a legitimate victory for Ash. Rainbow Badge: It's a standard back-and-forth, but Ash does have the type-advantage with Charmander and is winning when Team Rocket attacks. As with the Cascade badge, if Team Rocket didn't interrupt then Ash would have won this legitimately. At this point, there is a trend that when Ash is winning in terms of actually battling as a trainer, Team Rocket attacks. Ash and the Gym Leader defeat Team Rocket, and while their Pokemon are exhausted since Ash is winning and has turned the momentum of the battle in his favor Ash is declared the winner. One might question the validity of these "victories" since "When I was PLAYING THE GAMES, I literally HAD TO defeat EVERY Pokemon in the leader's party! Why does Snot-nose get to do less work and yet earn the same credit I do?" The Soul Badge is my rebuttal. As Ash gains momentum in the fight, defeating Koga's Pokemon, Team Rocket attacks. They deal with Team Rocket and continue the fight which Ash then goes on to win. Legitimately win, even though Koga did less to stop Team Rocket than Ash did and thus Ash had less PP and HP at his disposal than Koga did. Volcano Badge: Clutch victory with Charizard. But it was still a legitimate win, as in the games it would count as a win. Out of the six mentioned badges, Ash faces the Gym Leader 5 times. Four are legitimate wins, even if they wouldn't be easy wins in the game. And the fifth Gym Leader as well as the Replacement Gym Leader for that battle are losing AND face Ash's type advantage which they wouldn't likely be able to recover from in-game. ----- The only times he doesn't face the gym leader him/herself are against the Cerulean Sisters and Giovanni. And the only time he is actually flat-out explicitly losing a Kanto gym battle that nets him the badge is against Sabrina...who used psychic powers to give herself an advantage. Ash may not have developed as a character, may not have improved as a trainer, may have every aspect about him reset every time he goes to a new location, but in Kanto at least he did prove himself a viable and respectable trainer who earned the majority of his victories and the gym badges representing some of those victories.

I think it goes even deeper than that. I think the number one reason Charmeleon decided not to obey Ash anymore is because Ash kept getting rid of his Pokemon. Think about it, by the time Charmander evolves, Ash has already gotten rid of or parted ways with at least three Pokemon, Butterfree, Haunter and Primape. With Butterfree, Ash traded it away, worked so hard to get it back, only to give him up again. You could argue that Ash explained to the others that Butterfree wanted to go yet why try so hard to get a Pokemon back when you'll just give it away again just like that? Next was Haunter. Ash didn't even try to catch Haunter fair and square. Since everything has been pretty much handed to Ash minus the Thunder Badge, he just assumed Haunter would come with him and he didn't work to catch him as a real trainer should. And then when he has a badge just given away to him, again, he STILL doesn't catch him and just leaves without even trying. I think what planted the seed in Charmander though was Ash giving away Primape. Think about it, Charmander worked extremely hard for Ash so he could catch Primape. True, Ash used other Pokemon to help catch Primape but Charmander did alot of and most of the work and was probably very proud he helped Ash catch such a strong Pokemon. Then Ash just gives Primape away to some stranger he just met. Charmander probably then thought all that hard work to catch Primape was for nothing. Once we get to Paras though, Ash finally breaks the straw over the camel's back and tells Charmeleon who's now even more powerful and prideful to purposely lose to a weakling Paras, making Charmeleon believe Ash thinks it's worthless and not even worth his time. Had Ash actually tried to keep Primape and vowed to train it harder than that Hitmonchan trainer could and told Charmeleon to give Paras a good fight, I believe Charizard would have DEFINITELY respected Ash and would have been more than happy to help him win the Indigo League.

Im going to clarify everything you just said now: Ash specifically said in the dub he would tell the other Pokémon Butterfree is on a long trip. They would have an understanding that Buttefree left of his own volition and ash did not throw him away. Haunter was never a real capture, he intended to only use it to beat Sabrina, he did, and he chose to stay with her. You can’t get rid of something that never wanted to be yours to start with. I have a theory regarding Primeape in that Anthony basically scammed Ash out of him because he was ashamed that his Hitmonchan would be sabotaged so easily and so he saw an easy target to put himself back on top. Ash made a problem worse by giving Anthony his Primeape because now he will spend even LESS time with his daughter. But I think you’re also forgetting one crucial Pokémon: Muk. A Pokémon Ash only bothered to catch as an emergency and never bothered to use outside of emergencies because he himself said the Pokémon smells just that bad. True he still owns Muk, but it’s really more Oak’s Pokémon than his honestly. His dumb luck in catching 30 Tauros he never really uses didn’t help this either. Keep in mind that in Red and Blue and Green? You only have a 1% encounter chance with Tauros. I feel Charmander being pressured having fought off an entire forest of Exeggutor? By himself? He gained a swelled head and felt he was far too good for Ash or any other battle after that. And I believe as much.
@kenja06857 жыл бұрын
Brock gives him his badge, after Ash had lost and went through a rematch that didn't even end in a full legit win. Misty's badge was given to Ash by his sister, and the match was never concluded. Lt Surge's badge was a rematch win. Legitimate, but was from a rematch. Erika's badge was given out for saving the gym he was responsible for burning. Sabrina's badge was given to him during a rematch after he made her laugh. Koga, he earned it first try. Blaine he got it via a rematch win. Legitimate, but used the Pokemon he needed to control. Why would it listen for something? Earth badge was achieved not even by the Gym leader. Overall, Ash earned 1 badge legitimately on his first try in gen 1. 4 rematch wins (not all of them even legitimate finishes). 3 matches that didn't end legitimately. Would you respect him as a trainer?

@aqwkingchampion136 жыл бұрын
I looked it up, and Ash only truly earned 3 badges in Kanto. In Kanto, the 3rd badge has no effect on obedience, but the second does. If Charmander was already close to evolving into Charizard when he evolved into Charmeleon, then he must have been near, at, or over level 36. The second badge in Kanto only allows obedience up to level 30. And if that's how it worked, then Brock and Misty are both at least partially to blame for Charmeleon and Charizard being disobedient to Ash. With their badges truly earned, Charizard would have obeyed up to level 50. And I didn't catch if you included this in your calculations, but pokemon from other trainers gain more experience per battle than those you caught yourself. That means it was growing stronger faster than any other pokemon Ash had as well.
@CynderSpirit6 жыл бұрын
In the game the only Pokemon who stop listening to you are usually ones who were traded or given away by somebody else and it's known that they level up faster once you obtain them and start using them, if you don't have enough badges by the time they reach a certain level the Pokemon will eventually stop obeying you. The reason Charizard stopped obeying Ash was because one he was not Ash's to begin with and because Ash used him a lot he leveled up quicker, and finally Ash did not earn most of his badges in the Kanto region. You will notice that once Ash started competing in the Orange Islands each time Ash won a badge Charizard started obeying more and more and in return finally receiving Charizard's trust.
And.. why are you commenting exactly what he says in the video?

or maybe just maybe (lol wall of text below woops) Charmeleon stopped obeying Ash because Ash was inexperienced as a trainer (Not just badges) to the point Charmeleon was sick of getting his ass beat because Ash doesn't know how to battle. Over time the resentment for Ash built up to the point where even when Ash became a GOOD (Read: Decent) trainer, Charizard still had no respect for Ash regardless of what badges he owned. Friendship is a stat in the game, but as well as a real thing in our day to day lives. If you're a football player and your coach is constantly calling the wrong plays and costing your team the game, eventually you're going to lose faith in his ability to make the calls so you're going to start doing it instead. The egos of the coach and player clash. The coach being Ash and the player being Charizard. Ash thinks since he's the coach (Trainer) the player (Charizard) should trust him unconditionally and listen to his every command, but if the player (Charizard) thinks the Coach is an idiot he's not going to try to win at all. I think the reason Charizard just sat around most of the time instead of trying to fight was not only to show Ash that he doesn't respect him but also the enemy Trainer (In the show at least) and his pokemon aren't usually going to just attack a charizard who's loafing around not taking the battle seriously, so it's less likely of him getting hurt or exerting any kind of effort. Ash gets frustrated, calls Charizard back and Charizard can go back to chilling in his ball.

snowboon yo i remember ash always used the wrong type to fight. Like opposite super effective. But i thought he did it to make his pokemon stronger maybe he was just stupid after all.
@imo0987656 жыл бұрын
Something else that kinda makes sense too. Ash rescued Charmander when it was weak and needed protecting, then after defeating 50-100 Exeggutors Charmeleon feels powerful and can now protect itself. Then when Ash shows weakness in the Paras battle Charmeleon now feels superior to Ash and the this superiority is amplified when evolving to Charizard. Then after Charizard got its ass-whipped saw that he still needs Ash to protect him and a good relationship between them benefits both
@420RittzBish6 жыл бұрын
I think its deeper. Char had no respect for both ash and himself. He was trashed for being too weak and figured ash would do the same. He saw ash as immature and inexperienced. Once ash not only prove himself as a trainer, but he stuck beside char and nursed him back from death, which with chars mindset would be seen as the ultimate failure, thus truly earning chars respect. He likely expected ash to just abandon him like damian did.

In the anime, badges doesn't necessarily prove you're experience, if you watch the episode "The Path to the Pokemon League". Ash had came across an unofficial gym, with the leader known as A.J (Akira in the Japanese version) and his main pokemon is a sandshrew. When A.J. defeated Ash, that was 100 wins for A.J. against other trainers. Sandshrew was way overpowered and it seems A.J. has never challanged a GYM, because he wanted to win 100 battles first. A.J.'s Sandshrew was level 24, and without a badge, his sandshrew should have disobeyed him for not having a single badge with a level over 15. A.J. is simply a strong will and have high experience and knowledge of his pokemon. Going back to Charmander, he was abuse and abandon by someone that valued Power, and joined Ash after that. After Charmander evolved, he valued his own Power over Ash, because that's what he had learned from his trainer before Ash. Like it says in the theme song "You teach me and I teach you." Valuing Power is what Charmander has learned from Damon. The time Charizard loss, he could not value his own Power anymore. As Ash was nursing Charizard, Charizard reminisce of the times he spent with Ash. Realizing the care & kindness that Ash has always shown him, also the times that Ash has battled with Charizard against strong opponents, accepting that teamwork was results of winning tough battles.
@Verlisify6 жыл бұрын
Sanshrew was AJ's though. A Pokemon can be any level without a badge and obedient of obtained by the original trainer
@viciouscreate6 жыл бұрын
Verlisify you just verified part of my point. If you go back to when Ash caught Mankey, it evolved to Primate and Primate didn't obey Ash, because of Primate tempered personality. Ash's Infernape disobeyed during blaze ability. If you study many of Ash's pokemon that was obedient, and later disobeyed him, it was for reasons that pokemon consider important. Pikachu has shown and expressed that pokemon still have their own freedom of choice/free-will. When Ash's pokemon has disobeyed to protect someone else or another pokemon, and the times that his pokemon chose to leave Ash. The other point is, the pokemon game rules doesnt apply to the Anime/Manga.

But Verlis! Ash never earned the Boulder Badge too! He never beat Brock
@alphabladelm20117 жыл бұрын
My guess is he only earned 2/8 badges (Thunder Badge and Soul Badge). Most were from stopping Team Rocket like you mentioned or from some coincidence. But there are two more badges that are questionable: 1. The Volcano Badge. Sure, Ash beat Blaine in a rematch between Charizard and Magmar, but that only happened when Charizard saw Magmar as a worthy opponent. Even though Charizard beat Magmar, he went back to roasting Ash in future episodes. Plus, Charizard's actions in the battle might have been him humoring Ash's commands or just coincidentally lining up with those decisions. 2. The Earth Badge. Ash never fought Giovanni then, let alone beat him. He would've been slaughtered if he faced Mewtwo. Instead, he fought Team Rocket. No way beating them is worth an 8th Gym Badge, even with Gym Pokémon.
@jamesdinius77697 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, but I don't think anyone could've won there, not at that point anyway. How do you consider a gym with a mewtwo that is far stronger than anything in the games fair in the first place??? Also, this brings up an interesting point, how on earth did anyone get to the indigo league with the earth badge being so unobtainable?
@alphabladelm20117 жыл бұрын
Remember how Gary had 10 badges and how some of them didn't match Ash's? Well, that briefly implied there were other Pokémon Gyms in Kanto. Other trainers could've gone to those gyms to get their badges. Though there's no guarantee those gyms would pose a significant challenge...

I just want to point out that if you collect the badges out of order in most pokemon games, then you gain the perks of that badge and the game acts as if you have the other badges. Aka, if you have badge 8, but you don't have badges 1-7, all pokemon still obey you. You just can't use the other HM moves, since those do actually rely on the badges being present. As long as Ash earned his last badge, it should still obey him
@skizz0phrenia270 Жыл бұрын
You're not wrong, but this argument falls apart when you take a moment to separate gameplay elements from story elements. Is Brock a respected Gym Leader in the Indigo League due to the fact he has a level 10 Geodude and level 12 Onix, or did Brock simply use his low level Geodude and Onix against the ten year old with zero badges who wandered into Pewter a quarter of an hour after receiving his first pokemon? I would wager the latter is correct, especially since I don't envision every pokemon trainer in Kanto marching all the way from, say Fuschia or Saffron, to Pewter just to try to earn their first badge. This is further supported in Origins - Brock is looking at a set of six pokeballs and asks Red how many badges he already has. Red responds that he doesn't even have one, and Brock presses a button which switches the six pokeballs out with a set of two and Brock states "In that case, I just need these two."

To this day I still find it funny that out of all Ash's Poke'mon that got separated during the giant poke'mon island episode Bulbasaur was the one who thought Ash may have abandoned them. Charmander was bothered by the thought too but still Bulbasaur seem to have the lowest opinion of Ash overall.

We can also conclude that Ash didn't win Pryce's badge in Johto. He was like "I forfeit! My Pokemon has had enough." Not to mention Whitney. I mean, sure, Ash beat Miltank, but that's all he fought to win it. He didn't beat ALL of Whitney's Pokemon. Just her strongest. At this point, it's shocking he made it as far as he did in the Johto League, much less the Indigo League. In truth, he didn't start winning ALL the badges of the region until Hoenn. Early Ash is quite surprising when you get down to it.

Moreover, Ash is very weak and does not grow up a lot by adventuring alone out there, although it is not too bad for Ash to have friends around, he just did not put a lot of effort to his action and thought. Above all, the only strongest point of Ash is that he cares for his Pokemon as if they were his family, although his beginning was too inexperience to understand how to know and understand what a Pokemon Master really is and how to become one.

Ash has been a failed trainer since day 1. Not only has he got some free wins its also after he loses every gym match the first time
@onijester566 жыл бұрын
I pointed out in a response from months ago that Ash has a decent track-record in Kanto of winning legitimately. He was winning (with type advantage) against Cerulean and Celadon, before Team Rocket interrupted. The game got rained-out in the bottom of the 9th, and Ash had the lead. He was winning (without type advantage) against Fushia when Team Rocket interrupted, and when they picked back up where they were Ash won. Three legitimate first-time wins. He lost (without type-advantage) against Vermillion and Cinnabar, and lost (with type-disadvantage) against Pewter. For Lt. Surge, it's plausible to beat him with a Pikachu depending on the respective stats of the Pikachu and Raichu; just look to the people who attempt this in Pokemon Yellow. For Brock, in-game the closest way to replicate it would be using a Pikachu with "Surf"...which technically makes this unintentional win still legitimate. Thus we have two legitimate rematch-wins. Cinnabar, I'll grant as a "free win" since Ash relied on Charizard for what little lead he had. The final two gym matches to discuss are against Saffron and Viridian. For Saffron, it's fair to say that Sabrina using her psychic powers to interfere with the match, even going so far as to hold Ash and his Pokemon in-place and turning living people into inanimate dolls makes Sabrina's victory itself illegitimate, thus giving Ash an illegitimate loss. In the same vein, Team Rocket's trapped stadium would have made their victory illegitimate. However, Ash beat Giovanni's team on his first match against them. Therefore we have an illegitimate loss and a legitimate win. Four legitimate first-time wins. Two legitimate rematch-wins. One illegitimate loss that was off-set with a potential "free win". And one de-facto "free win". Your statement is thus explicitly false. [Not only has he got some free wins]...He got one, possibly two free wins. At most. [After he loses every gym match the first time]...Despite plot-inconvenience Team Rocket interfering, he won at least one gym match explicitly on his first time. And three other gym leaders forfeited in light of their inevitable loss should the match resume. [A failed trainer since day 1]...many players who go on to defeat the Elite Four have to rematch against a gym leader. This doesn't make them failures, and so neither does it make Ash a failure.

Bad game theorying in my opinion... sorry... but the only part that fits and makes any sense is the last stuff he said. And I don't know about everyone else but I realized all of this stuff(the last stuff, not the badge stuff because I don't think they work the same way in the show as they do in the game) as a kid... not 2 decades later lol... Exactly Caitlyn Adams... well I'd say that Charmander basically had a fucked up childhood, then got adopted and liked his new parents. But once he evolved he became an angsty teen(charmeleon) because he is adopted and Ash isn't (honestly, at least in Kanto) the best of trainers in the world lol... he was kind of bad in Kanto... So because Charmeleon didn't have respect for Ash and was basically adopted he was the equivalent of an angsty/emo teen. Then he evolved into Charizard... still having all these angsty feelings floating around inside of him except he is now a young adult, like fresh out of High School(so like 18/19) in the beginning. Over the course of the show we do see signs of growth because there are times where Charizard does listen to Ash for a few brief moves/seconds but then (I guess) remembers the old ways/feelings and goes back to ignoring him. Then the incident with Charizard's tail happens, and Ash nurses him back to health. Charizard sees all this, realizes that he might not be the most perfect of humans but he is his human and he cares for him a lot. And finally becomes a real adult. This part I am about to say is just something I'd hope happens inside of Charizard's head when the tail incident happens, that as Ash is nursing him and keeping the fires going and whatnot, that Charizard remembers when Ash first finds him (and he is remembering this for the first time in a very long time, like the last time would have been when he was Charmander still) and takes him in to make sure that his tail doesn't go out in the rain. The answer is simple. The Pokémon Company did not want Ash with a powerful Pokémon obeying him in the Pokémon League. Why do you think they made Pidgeotto evolve after the League? Why did not Squirtle and Bulbassaur evolve? That is the answer. The Charmander was wild because his coach abandoned him. He was a captured Pokémon. This badge is only important for exchanged pokémons. The Charmander has never been changed. So this Badge excuse does not fit. The answer has always been the Pokémon Company. Ash is their victim. Ash is a character and who determines what happens to him and what he will do is who owns the rights. Who owns the rights? The Pokémon Company. Even if it was Red, everything that happened to Ash would happen to him, because so the Pokémon Company would

Does Ash getting Charmander count as being a traded Pokemon? Because Squirtle was another trainer's Pokemon as well. they have a machine to trade Pokemon in the anime. I think that's how Dawn and Ash traded Pokemon. Same with Ash's Butterfree.

Your theory makes sense. Ash never had the fighting skill to win the latter badges nor the stricness and dominance you need to earn the respect of a stronger animal. Like many dog owners treat their dog so well and lets them have their way, the dog starts thinking HE is the alpha of the pack and the human just one of his betas. (note if your dog ever tries to hump you, he is literally telling you "im your alpha" stop him and show dominance, or that ship will be sail.
@marketday123456 жыл бұрын
what if it was a woman and a male dog, can the male dog still think it will gain alpha or will it acknowledge the woman as the alpha?
@MapleMAD6 жыл бұрын
For many years, it was generally thought that non-sexual mounting was a sign of one dog attempting to dominate another. However, according to research by dog behaviorist Dr. Becky Trisko, humping was not associated with aggression and submission. Instead it correlated with play and other "affiliative" actions. For example, dogs seen licking another dog's muzzle (a sign of equality and friendship) were also observed mounting the same dog. Therefore, a dog is probably not trying to dominate your leg or any other part of you.
@kurgan6686 жыл бұрын
right, let me get this straight, if a dog is humping your leg, its trying to show dominance, and YOU should therefore show the dog that you're dominant please tell me you don't have to start humping the dogs leg...………. :P

Charmander isn't the only abandoned pokemon that Ash evolved. There was Chimchar and Tepig. Even though Monferno went crazy because of his blaze ability they both stayed loyal to him. Even if this badge theory is on the right track, it doesn't explain why butterfree or even kingler would still obey.

You don’t have enough badges to train this charizard you need at least 16
@donellebullock74047 жыл бұрын
Why is this a thing about exp and lvls in the anime? Levels were shown to be more or less than their their skill level. Example: I'm at a higher level of skill at drawing than someone that has only been drawing for a few days, but there is not level like LV30. In the anime, Pok'eMoN can just abandon their trainers and come out of the Pok'eBall whenever they wish. The show is more about biology rather than data and numbers. This is why Pok'eMoN can be huge like the giant Dragonite, or made of different materiel like the crystal Onix. Pok'eMoN have personalities and minds of their own in the show. The game has the badges as a way to keep you from getting too strong early on. There is no numeric levels in the anime. Another thing is how come thing happen in the anime that wouldn't work in the games. This is because the anime runs more on the biology of the creatures, and not the numeric and programed data. In the anime Grass is resistant to Electric due to them being effective at channeling the electricity through their body and into the ground. This was stated when Ash fought Treecko. Ground is usually immune because their bodies act like the ground end of an electrical current, like those of jumper-cables. In the show, you must earn the respect of the Pok'eMoN, usually through beating it in combat and capturing it. However, some require more before they respect and fight for you.

except in many episodes they say it does. even to the point of levels and hp, and type advantages. (screens in many legal battles have the pokemons hp and stats displayed) it's just that, the writers of the anime are on a tight budget and schedule, having to pop out an episode a day every year. so stuff falls to the side when they can't keep up, most notably lore and story consistency.

Pokémon is still an active anime today. And that is because Charizard didn't obey him. Either the main charecter has to have a limitation that means his strongest technique is used very rarely or has a set circumstance required, or the enemy has to trump the main charecter in terms of power. It is as simple as that. Ash cannot be overpowered if they want to continue the anime
@derrickmcdowell88245 жыл бұрын
Agreed, he already had a God level pikachu, had charizard been obedient, nothing nor no one CV could've/would've ever beaten or stopped ash
@captain_buggles7 жыл бұрын
I think they really should've made Charizard himself share more of the blame, since the anime clearly paints Pokemon as capable of good and bad and taking personal responsibility. They also could've mentioned Damian's possible influence more, since I don't remember them ever bringing it up again. Plus they were way too vague with how exactly it was Ash's fault beyond just constantly calling him a bad/lazy Trainer, and how exactly Ash was supposed to improve his relationship with Charizard. He basically had to go by the seat of his pants and beg for even just a few minutes of cooperation the whole time. Plus, Charizard isn't even really a trade Pokemon. Ash didn't give anything in return. By that theory's logic, starters and anything that wasn't wild should be trade Pokemon too. So even though I like the OS overall, I'm never going to stop considering this as just an example of crappy writing that isn't nearly as clear and consistent as it could be.

See, the thing is, you're trying to apply game rules to an Anime that follows said rules anywhere from loosely to not at all (For example, Snorlax knowing 6 moves, the aforementioned Exeggcute evolving without a Leaf Stone, Pokemon being able to do stuff other than just strict moves in battle, etc)

Another thing to consider: traded Pokémon have boosted experience gain. If you consider that Charmarder's OT is different from Ash's, we could expect that it grew a lot more that level 40ish or 50ish
