After seeing the dev talk honestly, my assumption was that Clive was already going to be the guest character regardless of any new developments in Tekken 8. It was just a matter of when he was going to be announced cause from what was said, he was in development LONG during the initial days of Tekken 8. I understand why ppl are upset but when we got folks complaining about Tekken needing to be strict martial arts when we got robots, ninjas, guns, and Jin who literally becomes a Final Fantasy Character in the story. Clive isn't THAT far fetched of an idea.

Personal Theory: People that seriously argue for the 'strict martial arts' characters in Tekken actually want Virtua Fighter but with a bit more flash. But not Victor, Alisa, Lars, Yoshi, Roger/Alex etc., level of flash. They put up with the Bears, Roger and stuff 'cause they were there from the beginning and are at least grounded compared to the supernatural/fantastical. They feel as though the scale between grounded and fantasy has skewed waaay into fantasy since Tekken 6. I won't lie, it has. Not super hard imo though, 'cause Tekken always was fantastical in nature. They just have been able to show more as the games got bigger. They want a Virtua Fighter that plays like Tekken (5 DR if I can guess). Best those kind of people can hope for, is that the next Virtua Fighter ups the flash just a ~teeny~ bit.

To be fair, from what i’ve seen after the initial hate wave finished is that most people are happy about it. Steam charts numbers are growing, people are now releasing positive reactions, the top comments everywhere support Clive as a dlc. There is just a lot of purist old head youtuber who rile up their community and they spam hate everywhere. There are some people like mrjingles above me who will probably spam this until he can start crying about Anna, but that’s about it.

Lots of the DMC team helped work on FF16s combat systems, I think people will be a lot more hype once they realize that Clvie is literally Spellsword Dante! I'm definitely in the "I wish it were Tifa" camp. Players have been begging to have her in Tekken for several iterations of the game at this point not just because she's attractive. Tekken, at its core, has always been the fighting game that focused on hand to hand martial arts for character inspiration. Soul Calibur was the weapon specialist franchise. That said, when considering collaboration characters, especially since Final Fantasy was extremely likely, players have always wanted Tifa the fan favorite bruiser. Instead in Tekken 7 we got Noctis despite how well-received FF7 Rebirth had been. Yet again we get another Sword and Magic character with Clive instead of Tifa or another fisticuff character. Many of us are absolutely sick of these characters, especially after Noctis in T7. The addition of Clive comes off as incredibly tone deaf.

I don't know why it's so hard for people to just say the character isn't for them instead of bashing on his inclusion so hard. A ton of people are excited to play him. No guest character will ever satisfy everyone, and guest characters aren't popularity contests either. The devs are gonna make a character they think would be sick in Tekken 8's engine. They clearly had a vision with Clive and they executed on it brilliantly. I'm excited to try him out!

That's so funny that Clive was slated for Tekken 8 back in 2023 especially since when they teased Victor who is a new character in the base game and Eddy as the first dlc character when they hadn't even finished mocapping all their attacks yet but somehow a guest DLC character had been finished before the base game had even been finalized. Transparency does not work in these day of age just like what you're doing now. Trying to create "drama" out of nothing. Both were needed to be done to set expectations. If they announced Clive as the first DLC or have Clive in the base game, it would set an expectation and ruin potential hype for future DLC characters because guest characters are often way more hype than returning characters. In Tekken 7, they added Akuma to set the expectation that DLC characters will not be limited to the Tekken IP and why the first two DLC characters were from different franchises(Geese and Noctis). This is not the case for Tekken 8 and why it's not a smart decision to have Clive in the base game or as the first DLC. Because each DLC announcements would conflict with what the consumers are expecting. They already were dealing with Tekken 7's legacy regarding DLC characters and hurting the hype. This decision was to limit disappointment as much as possible. The Cash Shop does not hurt anyone but people enjoy drama and overreaction. No matter the transparency, people will jump to conclusion and start drama. It's to prevent overreaction like Devil May Cry 5 having microtransactions and people overreacting when in reality the microtransactions were useless yet people still used the microtransactions to hurt the game. The cash shop would do the same thing. And you're a perfect example why company should keep doing it in order for people to not blow things out of proportion.

Just because "he was planned from the very beginning" doesnt mean its not a dumb decision. By all accounts, it is. "Thats how it was meant" isnt a valid argument point. All it means is they had all this time to think back on this decision and they still chose wrong.

Remake AND Rebirth were relevant back then too and they missed a massive chance to go ahead and get Tifa which would have been a HUGE splash and brought tons of people into Tekken 8 just like T7's top tier DLC did for that game. FF and Square fans don't even LIKE FF16 to begin with. It has been about as controversial as Tekken 8 has been so far with the PC version even being quite an unplayable pile of shit technically speaking. Clive = ZERO hype whatsoever from any side.

Glad for the people that are glad but I can't help feeling like if I'm not a final fantasy fan I have to accept the guest characters aren't gonna be for me. Would've been nice to see someone with more general appeal or with a mystical power more associated with inner strength or the martial arts but c'est la vie
