The reason that Doom broke networks is that Carmack used the IPX broadcast packet that is supposed to announce network topology changes (Like if a new computer is plugged in, if a switch goes offline, etc). Broadcast packets are supposed to be received, and forwarded to every listener, so as each player was added it increased the amount of chatter exponentially. This is what happens when game programmers write network code without understanding the paradigms :) A patch was issued to have updates sent as discrete packets to each player, not broadcast to the entire network

So, regarding the difference in sales between Doom 1 and 2, my personal story is this: I live in Sweden, and my first exposure to Doom was through the shareware version distributed on CDs. I believe I had one disc that was distributed for free at an expo of some sort, and another that came with a computer or gaming magazine. I was literally 9 years old at the time, and had no idea what that mail order stuff meant, but eventually I saw the fancy cardboard box for Doom II sitting on a shelf in a home electronics store managed by one of my dad's friends and got that, assuming that "Hell on Earth" and "The Shores of Hell" were somehow the same thing. It didn't take too long for me to be proven wrong, though, as someone eventually handed me a CD called "EasyStart" with a bunch of pirated games (a concept I didn't understand at the time) including the full version of Doom. I don't think I ever saw the boxed store version of The Ultimate Doom for PC, but I did buy boxed copies of every other id PC game from Doom II (1994) through Doom 3 (2004), plus Quake IV (2005) if you count that. It wasn't until 2006 that I got my first legit copy of Doom 1, through the 2006 QuakeCon pack on Steam.

@@SandyofCthulhu Thanks, but I was mostly trying to comment on how accessibility is an issue. The shareware model was fantastic for making people aware of and hooked on the game, but the sequel was bound to sell better when there were fewer hoops to jump through to get it. And... I just got curious about how Quake did, comparatively, since it went with both the shareware and retail models, and I had no idea about the issues surrounding its release. I can see how someone would hold a grudge after that...

I truly think this is why Doom's artwork stands up so well compared to most other sprite-based games of the day, that they used images of something "really" there. It's like movies that used models in the 70s and 80s versus pure early CGI of the 90s and how one holds up but not the other. It made Doom age extremely well throughout the years.

Thank you for what you made! Doom has been an important part of my life for close to 30 years now. I'm glad that it's still relevant, through the new games, and that the originals still enjoy a thriving mod scene. The original game series is such a handcrafted piece of art, and those little "artist marks" you see everywhere in the assets and levels make you feel so involved in the creative process of the games. It's the heavy metal of games, before the heavy metal scene blew up; indie, innovative, and powerful. Doom is like your favorite B-movie where the passion and creativity of a small team of artists radiates from every aspect of the production. Doom is like your favorite first album you were listening to before the band became superstars. I love that you and other creators are still talking about how you made the game, and there are still stories to tell about how this legendary series was made. From a lifelong fan, a sincere and heartfelt thank you!

7:06 That was the thing I noticed on E2M7 that I found really cool, in the start of the level the lighting comes from the door and makes a band of floor brighter, it's interrupted by the pillar in the corner so there is another darker sector behind to create the illusion of shadow. That starting view made E2M7 very memorable to me (and the rest of the level, I personally love it, even though many people in the Doom community don't have it in high regard as far as I know) 8:48 I hated that secret, it was on MAP27: Monster Condo. It took me so long (and opening Doom Builder to inspect) to find this one. Whenever I play a map, I don't just rush to the next area. I make sure I clear everything from the beginning area. It was highly unlikely that playing this map I would ever avoid a lot of the starting areas and rush to the next big area (with the arrow in the wall) in less than 30 seconds. Btw,. there are some other mysterious triggers that I don't know where they were use, for example one that says "After 5 minutes, door opens and then closes". I know this one was used in Eternal Doom (A 1996 megawad, not the modern commercial game) in MAP05 where a computer monitor greets you, it says "come back to me after 5 minutes". So at least they let you know this time ;)

To be precise, Adrian made the clay models, while iD commissioned the latex models to Gregor Punchatz (you can find his channel on YT where he uploaded a video where he shows the Spider Mastermind's original mold here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKuVdqtjaLqKkMk ).
@0neDoomedSpaceMarine

Yeah, the clay models were cool, but they found that when lighting the models for the camera, they'd warm up and the clay could just come apart in places when they altered the poses, which took time to fix. If you look at the Baron Of Hell's sprites, you can see that his hooves awkwardly shift a little in shading on some of the frames. This stuff took a lot of time and wasn't efficient, so they hired Gregor Punchatz to do the latex-steel models. Gregor's dad, Don Ivan Punchatz, was a talented painter, and they hired him on Gregor's recommendation to paint Doom's cover art.

Quake was certainly less perfect than Doom. Quake nearly ripped Id Software apart, and the duct tape and prayers holding Quake's seams together really show in the disparate themes quickly knit together with slipgates. Not to mention the fourth episode. The game's overall production quality rapidly declines as you play the campaign - Clear evidence that the team rushed to ship a game they spent all their planning time on and still had to plan during dev time. People only go bananas for Quake because it was a technical marvel at the time. TCP/IP was new to most people, polygonal rendering in software mode on a Pentium 90 was nearly black magic too. But in terms of actual production quality, Quake was a great engine tech demo. Later, when Raven used the Quake engine to produce HeXen II, then we saw a high-quality, professionally-planned title that shipped on an impressive engine. Doom is clearly the finest game franchise in the Id Software back catalogue - and for good reason. Even running the original shareware release on a period-appropriate machine in 2021, the game aged great and still holds up strong against any modern titles. Quake, on the other hand, was more the "game franchise with an identity crisis". The Quake series literally followed trends with each release. Same reason each subsequent title was entirely unrelated to the game before it. Quake's only real redemption is the multiplayer scene, clans, and the fact that it kept the popular focus with the team at Id Software in the spotlight. The studio flourished because of that attention they got. However at the end of the day, Quake was a disjointed mess. Quake II was unrelated, and was never intended to bear the Quake branding. Quake III was the answer to Epic's 'Unreal Tournament'. Quake 4 was Raven Software re-telling the Quake II story on the Tech 4 engine. ET:QW was Splash Damage wanting to make Enemy Territory in the Quake II universe, on the Rage engine. Quake Champions is a pile of Russian dogshit on a terrible backported amalgamation of the Saber Engine that powered the Xbox 360 10th Anniversary of Halo: CE. Not to mention that QC should have been a competition-ready polished shipping release with several patches by now, and yet it's still in Alpha.... Because they like lootboxes and microtransactions. Trash. Doom set the bar. No other game raises it, or has raised it yet. Raven has always been the yang to Id Software's yin. Id made Doom, Raven made Heretic. Id made Quake, which was a great tech demo, then Raven used the tech to make HeXen II which was good. Long story short; Doom rules, Quake was good because it let Carmack make better renderers and lighting calculations come to market.

Hey Sandy, I just wanna say, I know you get a lot of grief for MAP24: The Chasm. A map that is actually fondly remembered amongst speed runners, while at the same time is a map that to be honest, probably should have been touched up. I don't blame the lack of quality in that map as you were really just getting started. Plus you went on to make really awesome maps after that which are just fantastic. You should have seen some of my first Duke3d maps. The first map I ever attempted. My first time in any level editor. I thought you could make a door just by putting a (wall oriented) sprite with the door texture on it, onto the surface of a wall and the same sprite on the other side. Not to mention, I'm not even talking about a wall that is really just a double purple line - (In the build engine, a double purple line is a non outer-wall line that clips the player and is hit-scan meaning you can't shoot through Essentially, it's a line made to act as an outer wall line. Mainly for purposes to make glass and mirrors. I'll never forget the first time looking in the mirror at Duke, pressing the spacebar, and hearing Jon ST Jon in all his *bit glory, "Damn, I'm look'n good." Holy shit. I'm getting way off track here sorry. Anyway, Back to Doom. So here I am trying to make this door. My first time in any level editor, and I'm using Kenneth Silverman's extremely janky build engine. I knew nothing about tags and sectors, but I would go on to master the engine and make some fun maps for my friends and I to play. The point is just I've seen much worse then Map24 and it's better then some of my first levels for Duke until I learned the engine way better, So anyway after that you would go onto make so many great maps including the very first Doom 2 map. Entryway which is one of my personal favorite maps for multiplayer and singleplayer alike, oh and E3M6: Mt. Erebus. My favorite map from the 3rd Doom1's 3rd Chapter, or Episode rather. Sorry I just got up to watch some youtube before I lay back down. I hope me being 1/2 asleep on an ambien high doesn't cringe this message too bad. I just wanted to say hey to one of the legends of Doom. A man who I have nothing but the utmost respect for. You take care bud, and stay safe.
