i think there are even more parallels to WF than are immediately obvs , besides ofc the games themselves being so very different , but while it might 'seem' like WF throws a lot at the player upfront , you yourself are a little more aware that DE/WF also hold a LOT back/hidden/under-the-table-so-to-speak , the avg tenno is several 100 to over a 1000 hrs into WF and often discovering something completely new that they had no idea was either there all along or just waiting to be discovered after a long and winding path ; both games are legendary ofc and arguably best in their respective classes/genres

Lol you're an anomaly my guy ~ I remember Elden ring to be the most memorable fantasy world I thought I never wanted to see until I saw. I can easily describe Elden ring like i can describe monster hunter world/Rise & to some extent Hades 2 or Dragon's dogma 2. It is as simple Weapon mastery Porn game with Beautiful Creature design and intricate world building !

The day elden ring came out I played solo, exploring every cave, meticulously checking every corner of limgrave. I spent 2 real life days in limgrave and I still missed things. In the weeping peninsula I came across demihumans that were being shot at by a ballista in a tower, I had no flasks and was searching for a place to rest. The feeling of sneaking up on a target just for it to get shot to death in front of me was a jumpscare I wasn't prepared for and I loved it. There is a small spot on the map of limgrave where you can see a lake of poison. I went there and checked it out. They went through the trouble if putting enemies and poison here surely there would be something right? Not really. No weapons, just crafting materials and odd items. To this day I don't think anyone else even visited that pond of poison because it's such a small detail with nothing there for you. But I love it. At the southern tip of the country there's the tower of returning. When I found it I assumed it might have been about returning from an over sea trip or something, never in my life did I think the chest at the top of the tower would teleport me to the end of the game. Suddenly I was at the erdtree fighting a giant golem and I didn't know how to leave. I just had to teleport out but that experience was better than adding mimics. These things all together are what I loved most about the game at first, then I added in the difficulty of beating bosses and the satisfaction I got from it. Pre-nerfed duo fights did not mess around on release and I remember I earned the crucible knight armor set through a trial of blood sweat and repeated running attacks lmao. To me, elden ring is the exploration and beauty of the world mixed with the intense boss fights and deep lore it has to offer. Beating the game was not just a test of skill, it was the final nail in marikas coffin. Finally taking over the ruins of the world she destroyed and leading it into the future, however bright or dark you choose it to be.

@@aspirewot8408 Then if you have, how can say the world is small(Or not big, in your words). Even the fastest speed run is 12 hours for the game. In an RPG with unskippable cutscenes, 12 hours is expected. But in a game with minimal cutscenes and some forced bosses, like Morgott and Fire Giant, without being exceptionally skilled, 12 hrs is quite lengthy. And that's simply "Speed Runs". I don't think I've put in any less then 40 hrs on any of my characters, with my longest playthrough guaging roughly 110 hours. That is pretty extensive. That is a very large scale world.

One thing that gives me confidence in the Elden Ring DLC is a lot simpler: FromSoft _never_ misses with this sort of thing. Artorias of the Abyss in Dark Souls, the three Kings' Crown DLCs from 2, and Ashes of Ariandel and the Ringed City from 3, are all _stellar_ additions to what are already top-notch experiences (yes, I'm one of those weirdos that will even go to bat for DS2). With a sterling track record like that and only seeming to get better with experience, it's hard for me to imagine FromSoft's game plan for Elden Ring's DLC being a flop.

DS2 remains criminally underrated by a fanbase that's more interested in being on bandwagons than actually enjoying themselves or seeing attempts at doing new things, and apart from the weird badly tuned little "co-op" areas in each of them, its DLCs remain some of my favorite content in all of gaming.

I figured out why we cant really describe why we loved the game we loved. its because to us, those game are greater than the sum of theirs parts. Elden Ring is greater than an open world game with great combat and great boss. so if you want to pinpoint exactly why you loved it, you cant. because their boss might not be the best, their environment might not be the best, their graphics might not be the best, but when you put them all together, its create a much greater experience than all of them combined. that is why great game cant be explained why they are great

I can and have played Ocarina of Time blindfolded. It's the only game that I've been able to do this for and I've only played through the game a couple dozen times. The game is so impactful for me, that the world itself is imprinted in my memory. I can remember that game world so well that I can literally navigate it using entirely just sound and my own memories of the game. And I think you just clued me into why: The game had such an impact on younger me, the sense of exploration, of discovery, the eureka moments of figuring things out on my own for the first time, that it became a core memory that etched itself into my mind as a permanent fixture. I remember more about Ocarina of Time than I do 12 years of school.

I have a job where there is some leeway in the start time. 0800 is normal start time but during my first play through my average start time was 0930. I’d get up at 0530-0600 and jump on and next thing you know it was 0830. Just fifteen minutes more I’d say. Some mornings all I did was grind runes or certain items I needed for crafting so when I got home later from work I’d be ready to go. I have never been so excited for a DLC in my entire life. I can’t wait. Counting the days

We know as souls game veterans that the DLC is going to be good. Because from software has developed a cycle of trust and deliverance when it comes to their DLCs. They're not just DLCs, they are capstone updates that significantly increase the quality of the game that they deliver them in. From software has never disappointed with their DLCs, just like Disney will probably never regain the trust of it's audience within the next decade.

Love the art design of the world and enemies but I also even after beating it 4 times talk to people who love it but have no interest in playing it again and I think maybe it's that outside of the incredible art design of enemies and the world....there's really not much that is elite about it outside of that. The feeling of “playing a painting” never goes away. The Erdtree being that central anchor point near the Center of the map is a weird detail to be underrated, since it is ever-present, but it’s underrated, imo. Each new region to push into on the over world map has the beautiful and ominous towering presence of the tree. And even after you reach the tree you have to push beyond it, above it, to complete the game, it dominates the skyline, but it also dominates thematically. The world design is meticulous, and there seems to be a reason for everything, even if those reasons are not spelled out. There’s an area call “ruin-strewn precipice” it’s a series of ladders leading up, up, up from Liurnia onto the Altus Plateau. About halfway up the ladders is a land octopus. These octopi are almost exclusively near water, but here is one way up a series of ladders, but why? I don’t know. I don’t know how it got there, but Miyazaki or someone at From Software does. There’s a reason the sea-level creature is 500 feet up this ladder, but I’ll never know, at least not without being explicitly told so. Any this is one of a hundred tiny mysteries in a game full of enormous, God-sized mysteries. Elden Ring invoked for me similar feelings of awestruckness that I haven’t felt since my first playthrough of Morrowind. It’s an action adventure RPG, it’s a horror game, mystery/puzzle solving game, a walking/riding sim, a platformer, an open-world, a gladiator sim… it’s many things all in one, all with a one time purchase price. A game that can be terrifying, beautiful, frustrating, fun, sad, and epic all at the same time. Masterpiece is overused, but ER is nothing short of it. I’m still playing it, and the DLC will help me squeeze a lot more out of it.

I think it's the moment that I realized the stone obelisks which give you map fragments are actually different assets. The scripts on the stones are actually different. Then I found out people have done the translation and they're actually plot-relevant. That is the kind of moments how I remember Elden Ring. It's a great Souls game, but it's like a book written in a continent's form.

I LOVE Elden Ring but the quest system is stupid. You cannot tell me that the majority of players found Blaidd just by exploring. Most people would have had to look it up because it’s so obscure. Which kinda defeats the purpose of having no markers. I’m fine with having no markers but we should at least be given clearer instructions on what to do next rather than just sort of having to stumble on the next quest point by blind luck a lot of the time, if you find it at all.

I actually remember an awful lot of Elden Ring. I remember playing through Limgrave, the swampy area afterwards, the endless mountainside, the fire giant boss. I remember carefully killing my way through crypts and going through that horrifying red plague swamp after teleporting into a cave full of spider people who would cheap shot you. I remember spending hours farming experience by slow killing a giant slug of a dragon that you could reset and still get the exp from it by running back to the nearby campfire before it finished dying. I remember feeling that the exploration in the game is so great because it feels like you're playing an open world zelda game, and the disappointment when you realize that the secrets you know about the game will ruin the experience as you now will always want those items no matter how you're trying to play through the game (best katana, skill locations, best armor, etc). But what I can't remember is how to play boss fights. It's weird, I try to fight even the easiest boss in that keep just past limgrave and he whoops my butt for 30 minutes and I just gave up then. I can't remember that guys name either, just that he says 'foul tarnished' before he jumps down at you and that he shares a voice actor with the twins father from ffxiv which is neat.

Personally I just suck at explaining the reason, it doesn't help that the whole thing is the reason, it's not one or two things that I like about it, it's all of it, the exploration, the boss fights, the mystery of the lore, yes I do read descriptions and look at the environment for story pieces, the build customization, the huge awe inspiring open world. I always loved trying to figure out the lore from the things that we can find in the game, though in Souls games it was quite a bit easier since they were a lot more linier, I still pieced together most of the story on my own, which I than confirmed by KZbin videos on the lore of Elden Ring. To use EA's stupid quote but in a proper context, Elden Ring makes you feel a "sense of pride and accomplishment" in everything you do in the game, beating a boss, figuring out lore, finding secrets, exploring and finding cool stuff, items, spells, dungeons. I remember so many times thinking "there's no way they actually hid something over here, who would think to even come here" and there was something there, some times it was something cool and unique, sometimes just some useful material, sometimes it was rubbish, and sometimes there would be nothing at all, but the fact that you didn't know which dark corner of which place might have some crazy new thing to discover.

Interesting. I remember a lot about Elden Ring. Granted, I have played it through a few times. Perhaps the issue you see here is because of the sheer breadth of the game. Being unable to remember a lot of it may just be that. Being unable to describe it to others could just be a mixture of the inability to store so much information after such a large experience, and a linguistic issue in conveying that in the abcence of many concrete memorable (in the moment) examples.

My biggest memory from Elden Ring is entering Siofra River. I found ER to be the weirdest Souls games to me. The first playthrough is so "wow... WOW.. THAT'S CRAZY" but after I beat it and played it again I felt for the first time in a Souls game that I could never reach that same "high" again, which is something that, believe or not, never happened to me with one of their games aside from Dark Souls 2 and Sekiro. To me personally, it's very hard to judge a FromSouls game just by it's first playthrough, I know it sounds unfair but.. I simply cannot. Every single one of these games are immensely replayable for a multitude of reasons but a big one is that they all feel concise and focused. Elden Ring is so well made that it's a bloated game that doesn't feel bloated when you first play it, but when you replay it, it suddenly hits you like a truck. It's biggest features are also it's biggest gimmicks. The open world becomes a bit of a slog now that you know where everything you want for your build is located. There's no reason to explore. That could be fixed if Fromsoftware had as much care for their NG+ modes as Team Ninja has with Nioh, for example. Elden Ring BEGS for a native randomizer mode that changed the placement of items and enemies. Then there's the dungeons, that on subsequent playthroughs feel more and more like Bloodborne Chalice Dungeons, except a lot of them are mandatory for smithing items. Then there's the reused bosses. So after replaying it once I realized that if I stripped the game of all of it's biggest features (biggest gimmicks) what would remain is pretty much Dark Souls 3. The thing is, while Elden Ring has amazing lore, I found DS3 more memorable and... charismatic. So I would rather just replay Dark Souls 3.. or even better, Bloodborne. That said, I do believe Elden Ring's first playthrough is Fromsoftware's magnum opus. But I won't cry for a second if they decide to scale back to more focused, linear but interconnected games that almost have a metroidvania vibe in terms of level design.

Because there is more fighting, loot, and exploring than there is story. I don't know what the hell is going on either and I stopped playing about 60-70% into the game. Haven't even finished yet due to getting sidetracked months ago.

Imma throw a criticism for the quest/narrative design over here, because ofc no game is perfect and let's be real, the VAST MAJORITY of players really don't play this game for the quests or story. It suffers from such an extreme ambiguity to the point that it leads players to just follow the wiki, which is the biggest immersion breaker of all ~ game could rly use a journal. Like, ppl used journals since they had paper & knew how to write, idk why having one would be considered hand holding. The 1st thing I got told 'en mass by the souls community regarding if I can complete most quests as a veteran RPG fan that likes exploring pretty much everywhere, they basically casually told me to "just look them up" , which was kinda wild to me just how normalized that became for them. "I mean what gives? I thought we were in it for the immersion & non-handholding here, why break that in the most extreme way?" ~ I thought. Many, many hrs later into the game I understood why so just ended up doing the same, lol. They gave me the common solution to one of the game's issues, but the wild part to me was that at the same time, they did it while denying that it's a problem. Like guys (not referring to you btw, mostly the more...fanatical side of the souls community)... I get it... we have precious titles and devs we're all very emotionally attached to, but blind fanaticism towards ain't the way. You can acknowledge the problems of even some of your fav games out there while still admitting how in spite of all that, the overall experience is a wonderful one ~ and certainly is with ER, just that some tweaks here & there could always be improved. Big is not always better either, cause even this game has TONS of repetitive content, dungeons, bosses, bosses turned into elite mobs later, etc and I sometimes think how it didn't rly need to be open world to deliver the experience it intended. After all, on future playthroughs, you'll be way more prone to skip the content which you remember won't rly give you anything (narratively or gear wise or exp wise) ,which is actually.... a pretty large portion of the game , lol. But yea , my 2 cents . Now time to replay it myself with a cool black apostle faith/str black flame build , hehe.

It's funny you talk about the stuff of exploration I hate the most in Elden Ring. There can be npcs telling you where they will go or which area they want you to go. Thats not a new conzept and old games did this, it's a lot better than fromsoftwares "rendom" placement. It is to big for the designers to make the dungeons and bosses very original or at least better. I was going though it again for the dlc again as well and it reinforced my criticism. And everytime I enter a dungeon I'm anoied, thats for me a sign that the dungeons arn't that well designed. I would have loved it if the world would be half the sice and have a quarter of the dungeons with better content instead.

ER goes hard...music, visuals, combat, exploration, pvp, etc everything is just stellar. Literally the only problem it has is the coop multiplayer mechanics, which are needlesly obtuse and janky. And still the worst part about it is still good, could be a lot better but it still works fine.

Elden Ring surely does great job with encouraging player with curiosity, and revard some who sate it. Thats one of the greatest part of the game, the reason why its not just another open world RPG. But Great runes, a thing that is a core plot point, have 3 or so ingame tutorial articles and even prompted directly after you obtain your first great rune, is not a great example of that, sorry LD xD

yep the game world is huge, almost too big. you will get to a certain point in a playthrough where your build is strong enough to easily handle the rest of the game, then it quickly loses it's appeal. thankfully you get plenty of respecs so there's no real need to do everything more than once if you wanted to try a different build I would certainly get bored having to level again with a new character

Elden Ring is difficult in that it provides no guidance. That’s fine, no need to shit on it. It’s like your other video on Path of Exile, for me, Elden Ring is a game that requires a guide to play or it won’t be played at all.

While I do love Elden Ring, it feels so much more like a game to me than Dark Souls 3 did. I always feel like I'm not as engaged in the Elden Ring story as I was the DS3 story. Especially the opening boss fight. DS3 has Iudex Gundyr. A fun fight with an amazing song. Elden Ring had.... a Grafted Scion that your supposed to die to. I dont really recall the music being noteworthy. Then Soldier of Godrick if you do the tutorial pathway after the scion. Every boss in DS3 to me felt like it meant something with relatively unique enemies as the bosses, the music for each boss feeling special and designed specifically for that boss. Elden Ring bosses were mostly just copy paste overworked enemies with a boss bar and no unique music for the bosses. I love both but I think I'll always prefer DS3 over Elden Ring. DS3 just felt... more satisfying to overcome. Elden Ring doesn't feel as rewarding to me for beating a part that gives me lots of trouble because I could get stuck, go farm for a while come back and win, barely get anything worth talking about for succeeding finally and feeling kinda empty about it. I domt remember that feeling occurring during my play of DS3

The best way to tell how good a game is, by telling how bad other games are. By comparing each aspect you will know what make a game good and what not. Good boss fight >> how bad the boss fight is in XXX games Good art design >> how bad the art is in other high fidelity games Good gameplay >> how cluncky is in other action games Good live service >> any game other than Helldivers. Good DLC >> Day one DLC, anyone?
