I was born in the late 80s and I know for me when I was a teen in the 00s, I looked at music videos, movies and magazines for inspiration. I would just kind of mess around with what I had and could get my hands on. I think I spent hours DIYing. I would buy ~normal~ clothing at the mall or thrift store and cut them up and/or dye them (black as I was a goth) or sew (messily) my own clothes. I remember, at least back then, when I came across another goth it was an actual unique outfit because 9 times out of 10 it was something someone made or macgyvered into something new and different. Now it's very easy to find "goth" clothing and there are many stores dedicated to this subculture. This means in my personal opinion people wear the exact same clothes which are styled exactly the same way an influencer styled it. I love the fits but it seems hollow in a way and superficial, like a costume.

That’s so cool. I loved that you made your own clothes and altered them. I used to do that with vintage in the early 2000s

I think goth fashion is actually one of the best ways to illustrate how individuality has been stripped from a subculture through capitalism and the commodification of personal style

I think somehow everyone also tries to be unique but copying others ? It’s like a trend “finding your personal style” but for me that’s exhausting! 😫 that’s more like inventing a new aesthetic. When I was a kid I just wore the clothing I liked so I guess that’s the most authentic thing anyone can do

I think being “original” can be hard, if you’re buying new clothing you’ll have to buy what’s in stores as everyone else. I like the variety of aesthetics bc I’ve been able to find things I love 🤍 I used to dress what was popular but always felt as if I was in a costume. When I found out about “cottage core” I incorporated items like that to my style and I feel more like me and it’s very easy and natural for me now to get dressed

I definitely think a lot of these styles existed before there was an aesthetic name for it. But its sad to see people too afraid to try different things because “it doesn’t fit the aesthetic”
@LaurajaneatelierКүн бұрын
Yes I agree. I think I have always been interested in cottage core before it was an aesthetic

People will really do anything for the algorithm, even giving the illusion that their lives revolve around an aesthetic. I prefer authenticity, fluidity, and evolution. Throughout all of these years, and really honing into what I like and what looks best on, I’ve really discovered my personal style. However, my personal style isn’t a lifestyle, and it gives me room to wear all of the things that I like and to be creative.

I felt suffocated the last few years trying to fit into aesthetics now I think carefully about individual pieces of clothing that I enjoy wearing and what I don’t. I think also ‘generational style’ will be lost because what will be remembered about the 20s other then trends that hark back to even longer times ago..
@LaurajaneatelierКүн бұрын
That’s so true. I honestly just buy clothing that I like and try not to focus on what other people are wearing

Good evening: Some ppl don't actually know who they are. They follow trends & ppl. I swear back in the day, all these barbiecore, cottage core, balletcore & etc. They never existed. Well whem I was born (late 80's). How about yourself core. Ppl will do anything to fit in & it's crazy. Even if they gotta change themselves. Great video & Good day everyone...!!

Aesthetic culture is so unimaginative, shallow and impersonal. Women are almost like copy and paste of each other. 'Bland' is a very kind word to use to describe the subscribers of these mass market curated styles. I love your videos Laura.

I'm a punk and I'm also trying to fight towards change in my country and making things better for the more vulnerable groups in my society. I boycott and I stay away from it. I attend events that are trying to raise awareness to issues. I go to cultural events. I sign petitions for positive change. I don't really like it when people view punk as just an aesthetic especially when the person behind it are clearly very prejudiced.

Hi Laura! Had an interesting idea for a video! The evolution of what is considered to be "full face makeup" over the decades - both in the application process, and what was considered to be the desired end result. Might be fun to explore!

Laura, I'm 64 years old. People tend to follow the crowd. Fortunately enough for me, my mom and dad were antique collectors. The whole house was full of antiques, in good taste. My father even restored antique cars! My mother made it a point to teach me that I didn't have to follow the crowd. When I was younger, people said "I marched to the beat of a different drummer". People enjoy coming to my house, but I sometimes feel the judgemental eyes of childhood 'friends '. Toni x

I don’t think most people across time ever had their “own personal style”. Only a few people ever have the money, influence and time to craft something truly original

Before you mentioned her, I tought about Rihanna and her ability to make her clothes match her energy, music era, personal taste and obsession of the moment without necessarily comforming. She was special for this reason back in the day and lately I've noticed Fenty Beauty has lost a little of its sparkle because of comforming to much to makeup trends. I think it's because it's a shared with a big corp and she doesn't own the majority of the quotations. However, I'd like to see it becoming the trendsetter Rihanna has always been since the early years of her career! I've never been a huge fan of her musically wise, but I've loved a lot of her styles and fashion interpretations! And I miss that creativity

I don't really get younger Millennials and Gen Z's need for a label. My generation, Gen X, didn't want anyone to define us. And we definitely didn't want a label. I think SM has screwed up what used to be a normal part of life: figuring out who we are individually. SM insists that one must conform. Eff that. Be who you are. You'll probably find that you're a blend of several different "aesthetics". What an awful word to describe cliques. Excuse me while I take my Gen X self and throw up all over this idea of conformity.

Really interesting topic! I suppose I would fit more individual style in my attire and my home decor. Myself and my home looks mainly like Mortica Addams meets Amy Winehouse, with a little bit of 1990s Grunge, Sharon Tate, and 1985 Amiee Mann (from Till Tuesday) thrown in for spice! That is a very on-point analysis, Laura, concerning the strict rules of asthetic trends today mirroring the tight rules of 1950s fashion! I know from the Goth side of things, there are several videos out there stating the fact that "Yes! You are still Goth even if you don't fit into this teeny, weeny small little box that gatekeepers have created!"

15 years ago I bought a flannel for 1 dollar at the thrift store and back then I really wore it every day. Then I had an identidy crisis and tried a lot of different styles to find the real me. Fast forward this flannel gets a lot of love from me again and it has my name written all over it.☺️ It is dark blue/green/red with grey stripes and this wooly texture, very grungey and I will probably never get rid of it.

How coincidental that 40 minutes ago, the receptionist at my doctor wanted to know how to spell aesthetics. We all in the waiting room, didn't remember the the letter 'e' after the letter 'a'. She got it eventually. I would use the word 'trend' normally. Basically we are always going to be influenced or impressed by certain trends. It's normal human nature. 🤷♀️💕

I'm older as in gen x with an attention span and imagination 🤣. Following the flock is an alien thing to me. Total anti conformity and believe clothes and style don't totally make you but rather you the individual make your style. I still put my own flair on my clothes and never cared for name brands. I did gravitate to the punks in the 80's but with my own touch. If you have to lable it I'll say eclectic 😁 but borderline chaos with many opposite likes
@esmeralda3858Күн бұрын
I'm 61 and have learned to live with my many opposite likes. It can be frustrating as I have a lot of clothes that don't go together, but somehow I make them work. It means I don't have any 'aesthetic', although I go through phases of loving particular looks, but that makes people like us individuals with our own style.
