For real. They seem to not grasp the fact that even though these territories are past colonies, there are now considered French territories. People there are born French and have every single of their rights equal to these born on the mainland. They can vote for every single elections. Of course, they suffer from the insulariry as prices are way higher than in the mainland. And you don't have advanced infrastructure to allow effective ways of transportation. And the jobs opportunities are lower. Children have to go to the mainland if they want access to Engineer School or other private school or fields that won't have enough applicants on the islands. Bonus, as French, you get European citizenship and access to any European countries without a visa and with the same currency. It was great to go to Portugal and having to pay nothing outside of my plane ticket. And cost of life in Portugal is lower than in France, it would be higher in other countries but it still great.

Fun Fact: Did you know that in the 1960s Brazil planned to invade and annex French Guiana? The plan was to launch a joint attack by paratroopers, infantry and air force while the Brazilian navy would prevent the arrival of French reinforcements on the continent. The motivation for this invasion would be the accusations that resources in the northeast of Brazil were being smuggled to French Guiana and from there sent to France. The beginning of the 1960s was also a period of deterioration in relations between Brazil and France. The invasion plan was personally made by Brazilian President Jânio Quadros, however it never got off the ground because Jânio Quadros resigned and the plan did not even reach the command of the armed forces. In 1964, a military coup takes place in Brazil with US support. From then on, relations between Brazil and France would return to normal.

Fortunately, nothing happened. Because it was in 1960 that France got the nuclear bomb, and the French nuclear doctrine at that time was "never again, you invade us, we bomb all this shit". And I'm definitely not sure that De Gaulle would have been a president willing to calm the game down.

Interesting. I missed that detail of history. I don't think they would have necessarily done well inside Brazil. However, the Guianas, in general, just aren't thriving in their present condition whatsoever either. I've grown to be far less romantic about independence movements since my youth. There's plenty to criticize in imperialism, sure. No reasonable person supports that way of thinking or operating anymore. But how many independence movements have actually led to greater prosperity for the people? Only Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, the UAE, Kuwait .... The rest are either suffering under corruption and squalor or are relatively unchanged in their overall economic outlook. Just a thought that your comment sparked.

@@ems7623 The British Empire was generally positive, bar India; most of their colonies succeeded given time. Africa ended up such a shithole because of Independence, they'd only been colonised generally for 80 years, meaning a lot of infrastructure was still undeveloped. When the British withdrew, that also killed any kind of foreign investment they got until the rise of China. Apartheid was a post-independent affair, so was Guddafi and others, and so was all the genocides. The nations that had been colonised for longer such as South Africa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many others, all ended up succeeding for that plethora of reasons. @remmont39842 жыл бұрын
You would assume it is easy to travel but it's quite the opposite. By road, it takes about 3 hours from Cayenne to the Suriname border and you have to wait for the ferry (1 rotation per hour) to cross the Maroni river. To the south, it takes 2 hours to get to the Brazilian border and the border town of Oiapoque, which is a bit like the end of the world. The trip to the next Brazilian city (Macapa) takes about 10 hours. There's an airport in Cayenne but flight options are quite limited and expensive. There are daily flights to Paris, Martinique and Guadeloupe and that's it. There used to be weekly flights to Belém in Brazil and Paramaribo in Suriname but not anymore so we are quite isolated to say the truth.

living in French Guyana, no, it's not that easy to travel in South America from there. It's a way easier to go to metropolitan France. For example, if you want to travel to Brazil, you'll have to go to the border, take a little boat to Oiapoque because the border is a river. There you'll take a taxi or a bus who will take you in a dirt road during like 8 hours so you reach Macapa, and only there you'll find little planes to go to some other brazilian states. If you want to join states that are not accessible from Macapa, you'll take a boat sailing on the Amazon during more than 24 hours (take your hamac) to finally join Belém

I know that in English the rule is to not place a space before a colon, but being French I don't really mind. Not a mistake from someone who speaks several languages, because I can't remember such small details while typing without reviewing after. - The slash. I also know that no space is required when separating two words in a sentence ; only when separating two sentences like, for instance, when you quote a play. It's the only mistake I'd admit in my comment. I hope you learned something today, contact me for more grammar lessons, you fake grammar n*zi. Btw answer in French please, I'm done talking in a foreign language if random people pick me up on my English for no reason.
