Why is Indonesia Changing their Capital City?

Why is Indonesia moving their capital city to East Borneo?
Indonesia had recently announced that it will no longer operate out of Jakarta. Announcing a change to Eastern Borneo. Why change out of their biggest city and region to a remote location? Does it have any deeper reasons besides Jakarta being an overly crowded mess. Why is Indonesia changing their capital city?

Love to Indonesia 🇮🇩 from India 🇮🇳, may they succeed in developing a thriving capital.. Edit: The indonesian government seems to have choosen " Nusantara" as the name of the new capital which actually is the ancient sanskrit name for that entire archipelago . In Sanskrit: Nusa( islands) + antara( in between) So the word " nustantara" in this case means " islands which r situated in between the indian ocean and the pacific Ocean".. "Nusantara" was the name popular among ancient javanese while another popular name for that entire archipelago of islands was " dweepantara" which was used by ancient indians 🇮🇳 and again means the same thing, both Dweepa and nusa mean "islands" in sanskrit..

As an Indonesian, I wish the gov invest more on fixing Jakarta sinking land and better transportation. Like Japanese did with Tokyo few decades ago. Also there's unclear information about the funding of the new city. In 2019 gov said they will not spend APBN (national funds) and rely on privates investments more. But lately there is a news telling gov will spend APBN up to 53% of the city cost.

Jakarta is a really complicated place to work with. It would take monumental amounts of work to refurbish a massive city like that. Like the saying goes, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", it's actually much simpler to relocate. Aside from that, it is really dangerous for a nation to have both their economic hotspot and government capital in the same area. If something were to happen to Jakarta, be it natural disasters or physical conflict, the entirety of Indonesia would be completely paralysed.

6:46 As somebody who has lived most of their life in Brasilia, I can agree that Brasilia is pretty boring. Housing prices inside the ACTUAL city are extremely expensive and barely anyone lives in the center of the city really, its more for commerce, as most of the city actually lives OUTSIDE in unplanned and crowded satellite cities such as Taguatinga, Guara and Aguas Claras. (i mean Aguas claras does look like an ACTUAL city, its the best place to live in Brasilia in my opinion) but yeah. Some facts needs to be corrected here. Nagara Rimba Nusa is not the name of the capital, but the name of the capital concept. There's currently no official name for the new capital to be exact. But at the time being, some use the term IKN Kutai Kartanegara. IKN is Ibukota Negara which translates to National Capital while Kutai Kartanegara is the name of the current administrative location of the new capital, as it sits on the Samboja district of Kutai Kartanegara Regency with also some on the Sepaku district of Penajam - North Paser Regency. Samboja district is huge that it's kinda larger than the whole area of the Province of Jakarta Capital Region. Btw, kinda cool that this video utilised regional flags and also state flags during the United States of Republic Indonesia years Update: The new capital name is Nusantara

Great video, subscribed. Although I have a few comments as an Indonesian, for whatever it's worth: 0:46 Statistically, this would seem mind boggling, with thousands of earthquakes happening yearly, not to mention erupting volcanoes and the subsequent tsunamis. However, as someone who lives in roughly the geographical center of Central Java (Surakarta), I'm hardly bothered by these statistics. Ocassionally, you'd read horrible news about earthquake A or volcano B erupting with many civilians being evacuated every few months, but that's it. Only disaster I've experienced was flooding, and that's due to technical reason. 1:05 Yes. 1:10 This is the first time I've heard of 'Nagara Rimba Nusa', but I personally don't follow up with this specific issue. This is probably just a decorative term for the capital name, at most being used to describe the new capital's special administrative region, and probably has no need to be taken seriously. 2:40 This would be an issue normally, with cultures clashing, but there's this idea that is still being reiterated to the populace, basically meaning 'unity in diversity'. Might seem like its just semantic and jargonistic, but its one of the contributing factors, aside from national ideology, that helps people of different groups accept each others (within reasons). Similar to other places, rural regions would emphasize on this differences while cosmopolitan areas would downplay cultural backgrounds. 2:46 Mind boggling, again. However, Indonesia has its own uniting language, 'Bahasa Indonesia' (literally Indonesian Language), and everyone, excepting numerous people still living in tribes or isolated regions, speaks. A man from Jakarta would be able to converse with a man from Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, and Papua easily. Most of the time. So.... problem practically solved? 3:48 This might seem like a natural issue, which it is, but personally I think it stems from a technical one. Like mentioned in the video, Jakarta is built on rough foundation - being a remnant of Dutch occupation -, but I think the issue with flooding has more to do with politics than nature. Policies were advocated to reclamate Jakarta's northern lands from the sea (like what the Dutch did) and to build sewer tunnels so rain water are driven into the sea quickly, but due to politics, the candidate that advocated for no reclamation and rain water soil absorption won the race. The flood mentioned was probably due to this policy dispute, or simply waiting for the solution to be implemented. 4:59 Rumors of foul play did circulate regarding the wildfires, which is a legitimate issue that the people here worry about more than climate change. 6:26 And corners-cutting. A common issue in local projects. 7:47 This won't magically make people from Java move to Borneo, which I think the local government understands. But it will definitely be populated, at the very least by government officials (many will be mandated to move there) and businessmen. Let me know if something is not right, I'll be sure to edit it.

Another reason of why that's a perfect location for a capital because it's already backed by 2 neighboring city which has 1 main harbor, 1 logistic harbor, and 2 airports. There's also 1 large air base and 1 smaller air base for quick response if anything happen to the capital.

3:49 Ah yes I remember that day when Jakarta flooded at New Year 2020. It had been raining since New Years Eve since around 12pm and it hadn’t stopped raining for an entire day, so we didn’t also get a view of fireworks that used to be bustling around every New Years ever. Then I remember going downstairs at 6am to the living room hearing my grandma watching the TV and saw the news outlet about Jakarta being flooded, but I was honestly unsurprised by that point.

I feel like the new capital will be another flop because a planned society rarely goes well. Governments don't know what makes a city a city, all they know is channeling money and building the layout. I don't think the new capital has walkability in mind which Indonesia desperately needs. Cars are expensive and public transport in Jakarta is cheap and fantastic, we need more of that. I bet the government's going to invest in self driving cars and 10 lane roads rather than investing in public transport and spaces like sidewalks. The same stories of a new capital failing is not uncommon, look at Myanmar. Indonesia should hire Dutch urban planners to design the city because they know how to make a city walkable.

7:00 "Planned out perfectly" yeah I don't think so. The city was designed entirely from a birds eye and car centric view. In a nation where almost everyone gets around by walking or buses. It's actual designed to be a pretty terrible city to live in unless you're a government official. And you can have a city that's fun to live in for just about everyone not just upper middle class car owner types. It's a vibrant street life that allows cultural identity to develop. Otherwise it just becomes a cookie cutter suburb like most of the USA. Unfortunately based on those renderings you showed, the new Indonesian capital appears to be going a similar direction, designed for politicians to get around in cars and not for people to actually inhabit a city that grows over time and changes with changing needs. Modernist city design is an abject failure, and its a real shame to see developing nations continue to repeat the mistakes the developed nations did just because now these mistakes are associated with development. New capital cities should be designed to look a lot more like Amsterdam or Paris in form. A big part of this is an institutional framework. It's less about what buildings you build at the start than what buildings you expect to be built and how they will be built long term. If you build a bunch of buildings spaced out and never allow that space to fill in, it doesn't matter how good those buildings are, your city will never evolve to meet new needs and people won't want to move there.

Brasília is not so bad, if you are only visiting one city in the country it should definitely not be in your itinerary, but it is one of the fastest growing places in the country and the fact that it is located on a plain region it means that future expansions will be cheaper and last susceptible to natural disaster. It is also developing a pretty unique culture that truly encompasses the diversity of the country, besides having some of the coolest buildings in the country, having had Oscar Niemeyer as its architect, puling up what is in my opinion of the most entertaining cities for architecture lovers out there. It is also right next to some amazing natural wonders like hot springs.

Oh boy, these nationalists and their mental gymnastics. First and foremost: no, don't visit Brasília if you're only visiting one city in the country. What a silly recomendation and disrespect for other people's time and money, the vast majority of people will definitely have much more fun visiting Rio, Florianópolis or São Paulo, or maybe some city in the north eastern region like João Pessoa or Fortaleza, these are cities with tourism-focused economies with a lot more to offer in terms of entertainment. The only exception for this would be if you're an architecture historian or enthusiast, because the historical part of the city (the one in format of an "airplane", mentioned in the video) is a time capsule of the '50s avant-garde urbanism, but you can easily see it all in a day or two without hurrying. I have lived in Brasília all my life and I gotta say this place is actually worse than what was portrayed in the video. Besides the aforementioned historical part and some small high middle class neighborhoods around it, everything else (about 80% of the city) is terribly planned, if at all; with constant traffic jams, narrow and labyrinthic streets, some places resembling slums despite not being one.

@@jedisentinel4879 I think you misread my comment dude, check it again. I don't know where the heck did you take that I was a nationalist, I hate Bolsonaro and all this new wave nationalism that is growing around the country and if you read my comment you will notice that I also mention that one of the strongest reasons to visit Brasília is its architecture. I never lived there, and I am sure it has structural problems, like almost everywhere in the country. I have visited it and had a great weekend over there. But suddenly, when we got our independence, many peeps hated the Dutch/Europe's influences on us. Yet when Mr. Soeharto took the government, it reduced. And time fliesss to March 2020, where Dutch King and Queen came to Indonesia for a state visit. And let's just hope that we can work together, especially for the new capital, not like before (1586, lol).

Thats why some indonesians against it. They think the govt wants to deliberately move far away from the people, to be freely making laws and regulations which will benefit themselves and the oligarchs within the high walls/boundaries of the new capital. Some indonesians also think this reckless move (insisting to start moving the capital by 2024, the end of president joko widodo's term) just to leave some legacy, not taking into account the state of battered Indonesia's economy from the covid. Did i forgot to mention that in 2024 indonesia is required to secure budget for national election too?
@aserking8049

@Wiry No, reason of Indonesia move it's capital not because of avoiding demonstators, the reason of Indonesia moving capital to Borneo is to prevent more money loss because of Jakarta vulnerable to flood, predictably to avoid Jakarta sinking in 2050's or so..., Erase Javacentric image development (BTW Java island alone is too populous), and National Defense strategy purpose. If you talking about corrupt officials oligarch and high key conglomerate family (ex: Salim Group, JK family,etc) they're been there since 2nd president era. Where are u voice there to complain back then but why you suss up this now under Jokowi administration?, this is how bureaucracy works, there always be a flaw/disfavor in someone else story.
2 жыл бұрын
@Aser King thats what jokowi's administration keep sayin'. But the real motives are remain shady. Particularly when jokowis insist to have the 1st indonesian independence in the new capital in 2024, months away before he officially complete his final term as a "legacy". Rather ironic since the in-dependence ceremony probably will be conducted upon properties lent by investors. And from i often read in social medias, it was the regime's-affiliated buzzers who often propagate the reason for the capital relocation is to keep the radical islamists (being the sworn enemy of joko widodo's supporters since 2014) away from joko widodo's administration. If economic redistribution and ease the urbanization load from java island, why not develop further the special economic zone already in kalimantan island? Why insist on moving the capital as soon as 2024, while Indonesia's financial condition is currently battered from the impact of the pandemic? Can the relocation of the capital wait any further, while the available and scarce state's budget allocated to fix indonesia's health system (so it will be ready for the next pandemic)? Now you sound like to justify the oligarch around joko widodo's administration. Saying that they have been around every government for long time. Probably next you will suggest not to make fuss about it. Ironic, since joko widodo promised to weed out corruption, collution and nepotism back in his presidential campaign in 2014 and 2019. What happen to the old jokowi? Has he turned evil?
@aserking8049
@aserking8049 2 жыл бұрын
@Wiry So you think the we move out the capital so to keep the 'islamists' at Bay of government influence? i wonder where you got a source of this ingenuous reasoning news? you know the vote of party is affect on region scale, is up to people choice there, and not affect a whole country, if state like Texas win vote Repulicans, it's not gonna impact the California ,NY, Massachusetts which Democrats win, Islamist province like Aceh, West Java or West Sumatera not gonna impact the East Nusa Tenggara, Central/East Java and Papua and so on just because conservative Islamist wins there. and our country not gonna going full islamic laws except Aceh Special Autonomy. We firmly done with 'Pancasila', if we going full islamic those region in east and Bali possibly seceded from us, that is the NIGHTMARE!. About Kalimantan special economic zone 'wHy NoT DeVeLOp FurTHeR EcONoMY TheRe wITh SPeCiAL EcONOMiC ZonE?', you know this is our current government interest to move it there, if you don't know what you don't know, then there a reason is better learn more or just silent. Talking about Corruption, there always a rotten apple among goods, not only Indonesia, Spain, Brazil, Russia even US has this sh*t too. especially with country that has been ruled by worst Kleptrocrat in world (World Guiness Record) and rampant culture of bribery and embezzlement in body of state civil services. Where is your cheer voice where there is improvement of CPI index rate, from 28 in 2009 to 38 in 2018 under Jokowi?. Borneo island is fit for new capital (which we gonna move West of Balikpapan which is Penajam Paser), low earthquake risk, spacious, people outside Java blammed us why we don't get any significant development in the region, blame Java island government eventually blame Javanese people (Because of Presidents always this ethnicity). we wan't to stop this sh*t and there more positively viable reasons why one of our interest are moving our capital there. Talking about P4nd3myc , is about become Endemic now... so just be not too paranoid.
2 жыл бұрын
@Aser King 1. The one who often argues "to keep the Islamists away from the ruling government" is mostly from jokowis' die hard supporters, which i often find in Indonesian social media. They had the narrative mostly from the regime-affiliated buzzers like deni sirigar (the coffee-sippin' maestro) & his gangs, to give further for the justification moving the capital to kalimantan. And of course, to scaremonger the gullible parts of Indonesian minorities (such as Non-muslims and Indonesian of Chinese descent) to keep them in formation. You are obviously rambling out of the topic by taking Pancasila, special autonomy, etc. I said, the argument "to keep the Islamists away" raised mostly by jokowi's side (i.e buzzers and simps) 2. Yes. There is already Maloy Batuta Special Economy Zone in East Kalimantan province. Why should Joko widodo insists going with the super expensive white elephant project, moving the capital to Kalimantan (which accoridng to the State's Planning Bureau/Bappenas would only affect a abysmal national economic growth, around 0,5-1%)? Isn't more cost-efficient to develop the existing Special Economy Zone, so business would take interest to invest there? Especially Indonesia is ridden with debts? 3. "Where is your cheer voice where there is improvement of CPI index rate, from 28 in 2009 to 38 in 2018 under Jokowi?" Quite an accomplishment. Here is my cheers. But unfortunately the said rate dropped to 37 in 2020, and put Indonesia in the 102nd rank, out of 180 countries. Not to mention that under Joko Widodo, Indonesia Democracy Index hit the lowest low, at 6,3, in the last 10 years (thanks to the massive use of buzzers and doxxing and cyber-bullying of critics). Don't forget also, in 2021 Joko Widodo allowed the respected Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) fell to ruin, led by morally-dubious head of Commission and let the Commission's employee turned into docile civil servants. The buzzers propagated that the Commission need to be purged from the radical Islamists as a pretext, to garner support from the minorities. Jokowi once promised to weed out corruption, collution and nepotism. But guess what? He let his son and son-in-law ran in the local election (after previously said he won't push his children into politics), appoints and let his ministers appoint his supporters as high-level officials (heck, even appointed his former rival as minister of defense, a person whose plagued with human rights violation in the past). How come joko widodo fell from the person he used to be in 2012? 4. Basically i agree if the capital is relocated. But i disagree on WHEN. Especially when joko widodo insists to start relocate the capital by 2024, at the end of his tenure, when the state's budget is stretched thin and debts are piling up. Isn't it other priorities beg to be addressed first? Like improving the health systems, building health equipment industries, improving the civil administration data so that Indonesia will be ready for the next pandemic? Rather than spending the limited state's budget for another "legacy" project? or it is just like old Indonesian way of life : "bankrupt, but bling" (biar tekor asal kesohor). Like i said, if economic re-distribution is the main reason, just develop the existing Special Economic Zone. So people outside Java will no longer envy with Java.

Great work as always. One additional reason: regional politics. The current regime arguably has lost control on Jakarta's last two elections. Being governor in the capital city is guaranteed spotlights on national politics-> fast track to become next presidential candidate. Oh and the lucrative projects enjoyed by regime's buddies because they control much land in the new capital area.

With the strong influence of the Elite class, I really doubt indonesian capital city relocation would be realised anytime soon as those group thrive in the present condition. Another major issues with Indonesian population is that the populace that belong to low socioeconomic class still kept breeding like rabbits which just perpetuate the cycle of poverty

I think it will be a success tbh, as long as it is finished within the term of the current president. We all know what happened to jkt when a decent governor whas changed to an incompetent one. I do agree that it is quiet annoying that these low class or radical extremist are breeding like crazy. Hopefully there will be an effort to eliminate them one day.

@Gerald Mahapranaja Pillian two years would be quite unrealistic to complete a project of such scale even without opposition which the current administration had tons of them Well intentioned political figures in Indonesia never survive long unfortunately

@Yami no Seigi totally agreed tbf. Sadly the radicals/extremist and "western spies"(if i dare say) have infiltrated our government and it will be a tough future. That is why the future genration must remain optimistic and thrive. That is why 2024 election is a crucial standpoint in our history. If an incompetent person succeed the current competent leader. The current foundation will crumble and indonesia will be a puppet of the west. We may as well pack our bags and leave our motherland.

@Gerald Mahapranaja Pillian tbh both China and West had influence in our government as the part of their twilight struggle. But should the western influence prevailed yet again, it will be the repeat case like our second president where our nation is exploited to serve western interest
2 жыл бұрын
@Yami no Seigi thats true. The thing is china is trying to influence through favor and help. The west is influencing through their "democracy" and internal strife. Id rather side with china at this point. They r a good role model for us. Western propaganda really tore apart their reputation tbh.
