Reffering to credit card forgery, I've read about a very interesting theft in Poland. Some thieves made a special small chip they put on actual chip in the credit card. It would behave as basic gateway bertween ATM and the card, but when asked about PIN code, it returned always positive response. So it occurs that the PIN is checked only on card (obvious), but the rest of the communication isn't blocked behind a PIN number (it is huge gap in security as it should forbid the actual transaction if it didn't record the PIN).

Yeah... well... America didnt have the chip and pin card readers that have been used everywhere in the UK since the early 2000s until recently. Even now, many places in the US do not use chip and pin machines, the case is similar for canada. Seems so strange since they have been used in the UK (and the rest of Europe) for over a decade.

I was about to post a command along these lines, never even had a bank card with the magnetic strip, I'd wondered for a while why they seemed to rare since swiping the card looks so much more convenient than chip and pin, didn't know about the security issues at that time though. :P

Brazil currency paper money has holograms, two-and-half dimension painting, microscope printing, watermarks, security threads, if you stick together the two end sides of the same note together they combine, shine under UV and the size of the paper changes according to it's price. I got a counterfeit bill once. Got it back as a 5$ from A&W (Canada), guess they didn't know they had it in their system :p But I went to buy something from the convenience store down the block, and they have this thing that scans bills to see if they're real. They took my 5, and put it on the scanner and the whole thing just turned from blue to purple instantly. When it was pulled out, all the ink just changed colour permanently :p The lady gave it back to me and asked for another, and told me to get rid of that 5 because it's fake. So I switched it for a real 5 from my foster mom :p

There's also another technology used to prevent banknote forgery - Polymer Notes. Australia was the first to use polymer banknotes starting with our Bicentenary (200th year) $10 notes in 1988, then starting in 1992 we replaced all of our notes with polymer ones beginning with the $5 (and full set by 1996 with the $100 that year), as is one of the few countries with the technology to produce polymer notes for use. Canada moved to polymer notes in 2011 with the help of Australia to do so.

My mom once had a Citi card that used MasterCard PayPass RFID. It wasn't until the new one she got after that a few years ago they switched to the chip. Even more so, Target has had the chip inserts years before other stores ordering them. Not to mention how stupid it is that some stores already have the slots for the chip cards, but they have been disabled since they got them years back. What's worse is that those same places buy new ones rather than jus enabling the feature.

I live in Canada and I don't remember when was the last time I saw anyone use the mag stripe on a card (I'm 20 years old). We had chips for as long as I can remember and for a few years now, NFC is becoming our new favorite payment method. Mag stripes are still used for prepaid credit cards and company credit cards though, but they're rare. (I work at a gas station... I see a lot of cards every day lol) In the US though, they are just catching up to 15 years old technology and are only starting to use the chip instead of the mag stripe. They seem to like fraud :P

Money is insanly easy to counterfeit. All you gotta do is buy some 75%(+) cotton paper, a lazer printer, some basic photo shop skills, and a dryer (to give it that rough fill). Then go to your local ball park or w/e and buy a few hotdogs with a $100 bill (fake) and keep the change (real). do this a few times per game and your solid. The trick is to not get greedy.

Cool video. Didn't see the mention of the fancy hidden patterns in money that make it literally impossible to scan. Most scanners will just literally stop scanning when they detect it. And photoshop will kill the file if it catches the pattern in too perfect an angle.

Those who are keen and heaven-bent on doing something, they'll find ways out and around. They can work in the factory/workshop where the machines get built or notes etc. get printed to learn everything and they can sample fonts/letters by gathering all the notes etc. required to extract the alphabets, numbers and signs and then use them and to fill in for gaps (like when replacing an S with an A), they precisely use masking and other such features to rebuild the required information (such desired information for the desirable or should I say required input can be gathered by reading a few of the notes etc. carefully) or he or she can rebuild the whole note or a particular region to make it seamlessly blend in. And now that people know about the thermal-ink, they'll find ways around that as well. It requires a lot of work but given that the outcome it will have, well, it might just be worth it for that person. And all this sounds easier than done but well, "where there is a will, there is a way".

My Dutch ID-card actually has an NFC chip embedded in it, it identifies as "Electronic identity document (MRTD)". It would be possible that asymmetrical encryption was used to sign the data digitally, making it pretty much impossible to alter, but likely still possible to duplicate. Kind of odd how I've never seen the NFC functionality in our ID-cards been put to use, though.

I have seen it used at an airport where the border officer had doubts about the authenticity of my passport, he used something like mifare to read the chip and verifify that the infos printed matched what was on the chip (but he didn't took my fingerprints although it was stored on the chip too so he was able to verify that the document was authentic but not if it was mine)

Now the funny thing here, they went from mag to chip for security and we can no longer sign for credit for "security" reasons we need a pin but hell lets add an RFID chip and allow pay-wave/NFC technologies which are MUCH MUCH more insecure. You need to phyiscally swipe or copy a mag/chip but RFID can be read remotely and goes down a massive rabbit warren from there.

It's all very well having all of these counterfeit protection measures, but you only has to produce a good enough replica to fool the person who you're going to show it to. Most of the time they only check by eye, so as long as you have the basic things like the hologram, they're unlikely to notice other details which might not be quite right such as the font.

Chip cards are new? Bloody hell you're slow over there in North America. The banks here in Australia did away with support for signatures when paying via credit card several years ago, and have been issuing cards with chips for about a decade. You pay by card, you plug in your PIN, full stop. Well, assuming you're not using the new-fangled contactless system when buying something less than $100.

here's the thing, the more security features a document has the easier it is to pass a fake. this is because most don't need to be exact just a close approximation. when the person accepting the document sees that the features are all there real or not it's accepted. any feature can be replicated with enough time, money and inventiveness. the difficulty lies in databases. if you have a fake passport, it can be 100% exact but when that barcode gets scanned and some other face pops up on the customs officials screen you're done.

The problem is though if the people who make the money can do it then anyone can do it. It's the same with art counterfeiters, these people are so highly skilled even professionals find it very hard to tell which is the fake. And that's art this is money. It's probably quite wide spread but it's not in the media much because it's so hard to catch.

remember tho. secure practices are only as effective as their weakest link. Many could get away with forging cash considering how unlikely it is that a cashier will take the time to check every slip with a counterfeit marker.

We should be more worried about foreign states artificially increasing interest rates by siphoning money that doesn't exist through accounts that don't exist anywhere but virtually to stall economic growth. In the US alone last year money was siphoned out of banks in the 10 of billions which they consequently made up for mostly by increasing interest rates.
