It has been very hard for me to accept failure in medical school. I had to get a 100% on my high school tests to be considered for admission in the country I’m in. Therefore, I have always been an A student all my life like all of my colleagues and so being below average at best for about a year and a half now has been a major challenge. I don’t recognize myself anymore, and I feel deeply ashamed and embarrassed of myself, and I feel disappointed at myself and I can tell my parents would think of me as a disappointment. The thing that saddens me the most is that, this past semester, I really stopped trying, although I promised myself a new start, and I ended up failing one of the tests I did and I will have to resit in the summer, now I’m at the danger of losing my scholarship as well. Your video was a great help, since for the last years I have been looking down on myself for being a failure and not being up to my expectations. I will start again.

@saramohsen6373 Hey Sara. I'm at this exact point, I tried looking for your email on your profile but I couldn't find it. I would like advice on how I could overcome this, how'd you do it?

I failed last year and had to repeat. Just had the mid year exam, and it was AWFUL. They ask the most random questions. Like more than 50 percent is rogue stuff that we've not even learned or was mentioned once. Things we were told not to worry aboout. I feel like my school constantly sets us up to fail. We only have mid year and end of year exams. If you fail, you repeat. There's no resits. It's so hard. I hate it. I wish we had block exams like you had. God. I would kill for block exams. It would definitely take some of the pressure off, especially as a repeating student. Anyway, sorry for the rant. Haha

Medical school has always been hard. And it’s not one single act that belies the current state of affairs with burnout and suicides, but lots of smalls incremental steps. I’m a clinical preceptor for med students, NP students, and PA students. The drastic shift in mindset of these students (med in particular) in the last decade is quite astonishing to experience.

I totally agree. My father is an ER doc and says the same about a lot of the students who rotate with him. Work ethic in general has gone down.

Good video, respect your transparency. Us med students can really be hard on ourselves about poor scores, causing us to compare ourselves to others, which makes us feel like we aren’t good enough. The reality is this is our individual journey and our own struggles in the process. This video is helpful and reassuring during those times. Keep pushing forward student docs 🤘thanks for the video

Michael, fair play for continuing despite the knockbacks. What I wonder is what kept you going- do you have a sense that you have to do what you're doing and if so, what does that feel like.

I knew I always wanted to be a doctor, probably cuz my dad is one, so I already had him to look up to. I honestly dont know what I'd do if not medicine.

Hey Mike, don't residencies see your class rank?
@ERdoctorMike3 жыл бұрын
They can depending on your medical school… the majority of pass/fail schools won’t actually have a class rank but rather a quartile rank. So they will report if you are top half or bottom half, etc.
