Best thing about these older engineers, builders, etc, is the quality of the drafts you get. Hand made, almost pieces of art for you to hang. I know because I can only design in cad and it never looks remotely as good as a sketch this guy makes with a pencil and a ruler

Grounds sound enough...father's pipe...not so much. This is so cool. Watching the progress, learning the steps and all of the details involved and the geology. Our farm (when I lived on a miniscule one) was only about 4 feet above solid schist. Nothing like trying to dig a post hole in that. :-)

one thing you'll need to consider which quite a few engineering and construction firms dont take into consideration is the surface runoff (the water coming off the shed and how it will impact the river and the rest of your land) because obviously you dont want a flooded yard

Wow Tom this is so important to get it right... good they have decided to do this now and find out as my grandparents home cracked because this was not done properly and support was not there even after tons of gravel was put in place... the warehouse which was built next door to us had massive rods (size of lamp posts) put into the ground to go through the muggy bit... as a lesson from this is do it right first time... Good luck...

The years of experience between your father and the guys from wearing. Wow. They put a 9'x9' (us foot) strom drain by me. when they did the core samples they found seashells 30ft. down. They also put it 125. concrete piling (with rebarb) before they put the cemement pad to hold the prefab section. Yes it was sunk in a road in a swamp at the bottom of the hill. The highway blocks the drainage.

Well you can always dig it out put fabric down in the bottom of the hole the put in gravel in 6 inch lifts (9 inches before you compact it) then pour a concrete pad on top...thats how we rebuild driveways in Maine. It's also how we put in septic systems and pipe...

Maybe you can still catch the roof run-off without the tank being underground. Oh Tom! We have clay hardpan that keeps things from draining about three feet down too. By the time you get to five feet, you hit the ground water level and sand. The sides of the hole that's being dug gets wet and starts slumping in. But, it's buildable. Kennedy Space Center was built on property that is about as far inland as you all are.
@lindenbergers
@lindenbergers 3 жыл бұрын
You've got some interesting soil. So do i, near Denver... Dry sand in the front, solid light brown clay and bentonite in the back, one yard burns to a crisp, the other turns into swamp, all buildings shift on the clay. So fun! If only i could mix the two soils.

I don’t know about in England but in the USA Interest rates are low for borrowing. I’d say now would be the best time to build a new building before inflation hits and causes things to get even more expensive. Building materials just keep getting higher and don’t show signs of getting cheaper any time soon. Good luck with the new building, it will be a great investment and I can’t wait to watch your progress over the next year. Cheers.

Downholland Silt I think. Typically 15 to 20 m thick in your area IIRC - Lytham and Blackpool. I was an engineering geologist (now retired) and dug hundreds of trial pits for foundation projects in your area. Perfectly workable with the right size of foundation and a flexible structure like a shed.
