Fitted one to my lathe over 10 years ago a great addition for drilling holes in stock to a given depth.

Канал офигенный,спасибо автору и уважение и почет! Вспомнил как во время службы,выточил заму по вооружению коническую вставку для самовара. Не зная возможностей станка,работал продольной и поперечной. Доводил как и принято у нас напильником😂

After watching this video I started looking on the internet, and they already exist. They are called "digital linear scale" or "digital ruler readout" Some machines already have them predetermined, but you can also buy them separately and then install them

Because in America they charge extra for parts that come standard. I've seen parts stores take hardware out of brake pad boxes to charge more when someone asks for them. Not for nothing that's one of the cheapest calipers ever sold on the planet. They work but don't last long. That's a really cool adaptation you got there too.

I did this myself a decade ago, it's such an obvious and useful addition. Perfect for drilling to depth, especially when peck drilling tiny PCB Carbide drills where you need to approach the bottom of the last peck very slowly indeed. I use a thick feeler gauge over the end of the work if there's a need for a depth from a larger opening. Touch on it, set to zero. Remove the feeler gauge and advance the tailstock the thickness of the gauge and set to zero. You now have the tip of the drill precisely level with the end of the workpiece.

you can do just a double sided tape (i.e. 3M VHB) to mount the main body, no need to drill into the tailstock

I did something simalar to my wood lathe a while back. I used a DRO for a drill press as it alreadt comes with mounts to mount ti a cylinder. Works great

A lot of mini lathes out there have good aftermarket support and there’s upgraded tailstocks out there with a dro for 100$

Hahaha! I was wondering that when you can lay your hands on so many machines how come you don't have a simple Laser Profile cuting machine with a programer attached for making the adaptor to the Tail stock. Atleast you would be having a Milling machine instead of using an Angle grinder and a Welding machine and a Belt Sander and a CNC lathe and and and...

Y'know, I don't think I have ever needed to be that accurate drilling a hole with the tailstock. This would be a bell or whistle that I wouId would never hear on my lathe. Nice work though.

I had a similar reaction and opinion as www.youtube.com/@markneedham752 but then reconsidered. ....This would be damn useful if something like a Dremel was mounted to the TailStock. Precision control of drill depth is also possible here. Nice work Mr.Craft! Wakodahatchee Chris

The tailstock quill and hand wheel are already marked out in increments. Why bother with this and why are you wasting so much time.

cause they are to cheap run out of battery's sooner than later and have a terrible viewing angle at least the cheap ones. but i like the idea so much so that i build one my self last week but with a dial caliper easier to read and never runs out of battery downside bit more expensive to begin with.

They *are* installed in production everywhere. They are called DRO (digital read out). And no: Your solution is not useful as these cheap chinese calipers are unrelyable as hell: They react to light, vibration etc. and more often than not skip impulse marks on the scale. Also, they eat batteries as horses eat oats: They are always empty if you need them. Take a mechanic roundscale with a resolution of 1/100 mm and you have a *good* solution.

For the same money you spent on the digital calipers you could have bought some DRO built for ease of instantiation with power packs that never drain down..
@cornnatron30303 ай бұрын
@@SegoMan no offence but tthis plastic caliper would go for less than 10dollars a dro minimal 200 +time to mount them also not many dro's for tailstock quils . Most lathe dro's are x for cross slide and y for saddle some times a 3th for the compound but never seen a quil one myself. You could go for one of those digital scale ones for the quil but they are just more expensive than calipers but if cost is a issue i would not invest in metal turning as the tooling cost would pass the lathe cost easly.
