Why is Japan's population declining?
Japan's population has been falling for years now. But why? Japan is one of the richest countries on Earth and has a very high standard of living. But for some reason it's population is falling. In this episode of Cogito I will analysis why people in Japan aren't having babies and why people living longer might also be causing huge economic problems. We will also see whether or not robots can solve the issue or if immigrants could. Whether through accepting refugees or Robot bears Japan will have to do something to stop it's population from falling.

The problem is that in Japan, marriage is unattractive to both sexes. They need to change their work culture, treat men better by requiring less hours, treat women better by giving them maternity leave and allowing them to continue their career later on. In the west though, marriage is attractive to women but unattractive to men. I think this will cause the same problems Japan has.

To me, if a society wants to bring their native population up, maybe they should start looking into paying people who are dedicated enough to raise good kids. I want the caretakers to be married NOT because I'm a social conservative, but becuase kids from single-parent households are statistically at a higher risk of getting into trouble than kids who are raised in a two-parent household.

the problem is money! kids are expensive to be risen in a super-competitive world if the basics, such as schooling & minimal health, aren't a given. Russia & Brazil have lowering birth rates, & here is already a given that the country "will get old before getting rich". in Europe, as Marion Le Pen (the niece, not the presidential) has stated in a parliamentary debate, abortion is being used as a way to make ends meet when the family realizes that they can't afford even the 1st child. add women's social status in Jp to this economical madness & you get those numbers! asian 50+ work hours is an ethics that is hard to be met elsewhere, & immigrants share many costs w/ kids, learning the language for instance, & those must be paid either by the employers or the State. Jp has already tested immigration in the 80's & 90's but it didn't work for them. on the other hand, robots demand nothing more than what any other electric appliance would.

@arthas640
@arthas640 4 жыл бұрын
i know some guys who wont get married or have kids partially because they're worried about getting screwed in a divorce. My state is rather infamous for this, despite the law putting limits on how much percentage wise can be taken as part of alimony or child support the courts will exceed those limits. I've known guys that wound up having nearly 75% of their paychecks taken as alimony. We have similar problems with child support, but my main issue with that is that there arent any systems in place that make it so child support goes towards the children so the money can get misspent. That's also without getting into the issue of men rarely winning child support and even when the courts do award it thy rarely enforce it, I don't know the statistics but personally I've only known of 1 single father to both win and actually receive child support. I don't think gender should effect alimony or child support, child support needs to try and split things equally and alimony should be based more on who earns how much and should mainly exist to make sure both parties are financially stable, it shouldnt be about winning a huge payday for one party.

Tax incentives for people with childern would solve for the short term. In longer term it will result in lower tax base. And revoking this mighy rrdult in the same decline . So japan can do two things cyclic growth and decline. Alternatively it could add millitary conscription for everyone aged 20-25 other than people with kids. That wont effecr the tax base But best solution is long term cultural adaptation and for the public to realise there is a problem

Okay, this is a genuine question and not an attack, because I may have missed some much needed cynicism... Are you actually suggesting that promiscuity, in the form of an increase of unwed births, as one of the viable solutions? Many of your ideas are generally well thought out, so if you did believe that, I'm sure you have your own reasoning behind it. But my reponse would be pointing to the fact that they have society of lower crime rates and largely productive members for a reason. Again, if you were implying that jokingly, I apologize for being so dense. Great videos, as I said in another comment to you today- keep up the good work!

well Japan is already lost in terms of it's population Ryutaro Hashimoto should have put a cap on the amount of extra unpaid hours a company can make someone in Japan work. Most companies recquire an extra 80 hours a month, he should have limited this to 60 hours (as if he did it to lower then so many companies would have left japan causing unemployment to soar). and should have promised benefits to couples who have more kids like say if couples have 3 or more kids they get free university, and if they have more than that then free private Highschools and prep schools and free tutoring. now it's too late so many Japanese people are too old to bare children, 21 - 23 years ago Japan was just about young enough for this to be pulled off

5 years after this very informative video, Japan has had absolutely zero success in reversing the trend and its birthrate has fallen below 800.000 births in 2022, 8 years ahead of schedule. Japan failed and it is simply too late now.

Great analysis. I still don't understand why Japan is so averse to immigration. They are surrounded with overpopulated countries, many of which have extremely skilled workers. I think allowing more immigration is going to help address two problems at the same time: under-population of Japan and overpopulation of countries like India. Yes, it will change the culture but for the most part for good. What is so great about the patriarchal Japanese culture anyway? Why can't they be open to learning from other societies.
@kuyaleinad4195
@kuyaleinad4195 7 жыл бұрын
Vikram Sundarraman I'm not sure but you are correct that they're surrounded by pretty overpopulated and skilled countries. The language barrier is already pretty big barrier going into Japan. Their laws just make it more difficult. I know my country in particular can help Japan. The Philippines is overpopulated and our birth rate won't go down anytime soon (Thanks to the Catholic Church -_-). We can provide nurses that Japan really needs to care for the elderly.
@DelfinaKS
@DelfinaKS 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right, the language is a big barrier, but why on earth do Japanese people need three writing systems and a different language to speak to junior or senior, man or women. I think the linguistic complexity is a reflection of cultural complexity. See how Korea has simplified the writing. if Japan allows immigration, the language will also get simplified and that in my opinion will be a good thing for everyone!
