John Frusciante seems to always be around when the Chili Peppers make a hit record. Baxter and Jonathan break down this sometimes underrated but incredibly influential guitar player. From the Chili Peppers to The Germs to the work as Trickfinger its hard to deny the guy is a legit rock star.

I’m 65, I’ve been going to gigs and listening to rock albums for decades, but Frusciante is my first ever guitar hero. He is cool because he’s an immensely hard working and creative musician, but he’s also philosophical, intelligent, introspective, humble and he has massive artistic integrity. Listening to his interviews, you soon understand how unique and fascinating he is. Music is his life and we are all enriched by his devotion to his craft.

Frusciante might not be popularly known as a virtuoso, but he certainly is one. The thing with Frusciante is he's very self aware of himself in the context of the history of guitar. He said in a Steve Rosen interview that Jimmy Page is the end all be all of blues rock guitar, so why try and out do what's already been mastered? He takes reference from so many different styles of playing to try and attempt something that hasn't been down before. Minor Thing, the solo is very David Gilmour-esque, but everything else about the song comes from a totally different style. In live performances he can be super maximalist in his playing, check out some live performances of If You Have To Ask, my favourite is the solo from Grand Rapids, MI in 2000. And most look past his solo work, how many guitar players can do a beautiful, stripped down, melodic Cat Stevens/ Emerson Lake & Palmer album like Curtains, and then follow it up with the greatest psychedelic rock album since Dark Side of the Moon, in The Empyrean. Frusciante is the greatest guitar player since Jimmy Page released Physical Graffiti and not enough people know it.

I don't think you mentioned his solo albums. They are unbelievable. True works of art. I met John and Flea once. It was after my first RHCP show, which happened to be their first performance after By The Way came out. I got to talk to them both for a minute or two. It was amazing. John is my all time favorite.

Thanks for watching! We alike to approach these types of “artist spotlight” videos from the idea of those out there who haven’t thought about the greatness hidden right under their nose. Johns playing is so tasteful that you can forget what he’s doing within the spectacular song structures they have put together. Sincere thanks for watching and good insights as well. Check out our video on Dave Matthews, it has a similar approach. Have a super one!

@@CasinoGuitars "Johns playing is so tasteful that you can forget what he’s doing..." Exactly this, IMO. The guy is an incredibly good guitar player, and he could definitely shred when he felt like it -- he just didn't, because he doesn't find it interesting to listen to. He mentioned this in an interview too, something about how 'it's not about showing off what you can do with some wood and metal strings' (can't remember the exact quote but was close to that). The only truly 'bad' performance I've ever seen by him was that SNL show, and he was clearly in quite a dejected mood and maybe high on something too. Outside of that era when he was hating life, his playing was consistently great live. When he and Flea used to improvise and riff off of each other at their shows, now that was really something special. Those two speak a funky language directly from their fretboards to each other.

I've been a peppers fan since I was about 10 years old (1989ish) and Mother's Milk came out. I've always felt that Anthony provided the charisma, Flea and Chad provided funky technicality and momentum, and John provided the soul that lifts them above the level of a really good party band. His guitar parts are designed to appeal to the musician rather than just the guitarist, and the song is really in control. He's maintained a high level of artistic credibility as a result.

I met John summer August of 2019 at Linda Ramone's annual event. John is not one to be at celebrity events but I noticed online that the past years when fans come up to him at this event he is happy to speak with them. So I took a chance and flew to CA. I am part of the RHCP/JOHN FRUSCIANTE fanbase so I had fans send me their photo and I put them in a Thank you card. So I gave him the card and he signed my Shadows Collide with People cd. He was very shocked when I gave him the Thank you card lol I have a very short video clip with him...I froze like a statue so I didn't get a photo with him but very memorable day. Fans flew from all over USA. I was worried he would be overwhelmed because when he saw all the fans with Blood Sugar Sex Magiks and Empryrean vinyls he literally ran from us. But later Linda Ramone made a announcement that John will come back out and speak with all of us so we just need to be calm and patient.

The man really is superb, he's conscious of what he outputs a lot of the time, often being restrained on recorded versions only to explode when playing his solos live. He has to be the best guitarist of that style alive today that I've seen live that's for sure. Emotion and texture take precedence over notes per minute, and it's nearly always for the benefit of the song. I also love the contrasting nature of his solo work, and the sheer volume of stuff he's released on his hiatus from the chili peppers is incredible, such a variety too. I'm so stocked he's rejoined the band, but the universe couldn't handle that and RATM reforming all at the same time so the matrix glitches and we have COVID 😞

During the early days JF said he loved Hendrix for many reasons but one was that you knew when he was pissed off, happy, or sad because it was intertwined with his playing. With John, this is what I love too, sure he has had some off days, at times appearing frustrated with his own solo but some days you get Slane Castle. A lot is said about this gig so I won’t repeat, but what I will say is how much fun he seemed to be having, on that day his solo’s were full of positivity. Thanks John for inspiring me.

You mentioned Hendrix from my era. Yes at 61 I’m old enough to be your father. I’d love to hear you get into Terry Kath of Chicago. Particularly the early stuff. Being mainly a guitarist now, though learning piano & keyboards @ 60. I was also once a horn player. I was that kid that came into your music store (look for him) processed. Trombone, trumpet, drums, bass. I could not get enough. Terry & Chicago was such an inspiration to me specially the early hard rock horn band. Jimi was asked what’s it feel like to be the greatest guitar player ever. He replied I don’t know you’d have to ask Terry. And there was talk of a collaboration but sadly Hendrix didn’t live long enough.

His mom and dad were/are Juilliard musicians and teachers as well. He loved Hillel and was his acolyte, but he also loved the band and was part of that underground scene. So when HIllel died he took over and was the absolute catalyst and muse to that band. And Josh was an acolyte for John, making music for a while together on the side before John brought Josh on stage to back him up for the Peppers, there's video on youtube. I love Dave Navarro, My Friends is one of my favorite songs, but his live sound did not sound like it gelled during shows and the other songs on that album weren't great, just like Dark Necessities. They don't suck by any means, they just don't meet that standard that Frusciante's work has with that band. It proof positive how a band is greater than the sum of it's parts. John's favorite musicians of all time are Anthony, Chad and Flea and that just shows, every time.

The guitar tracks from BSSM are a great listen to understand some of what made him such a great artist. I never realized how clean, tight, and funky his playing was until I heard it outside the mix. Also, remember he wrote this stuff when he was only about 20 years old, and some of the stuff on that album is quite original even with the obvious influences that inspired him. Check 'em out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g33bYqyQbc17i8k edit: also just have to add, his guitar tone is one of my all time favorites. The stereo amps with subtle chorus he typically ran, with those chimey clean yet dirty Marshalls, combined with vintage strat tone is soooo tasty.

Simple answer to this question. Because he is unquestionably himself and is comfortable in expressing himself. He has pictures of himself in makeup as a girl on the internet and could care less what anyone thinks of it. He is free from the constraints of what society deems is right and wrong, therefore he can be as expressive as humanely possible

This is just RHCP, check out his solo projects self titled, or his electronic music. His u understanding for sound is above so many greats, especially in my generation of music. 90’s ALT ROCK BABY --- heroin has devistated many musicians families etc, and id like to acknowledge the strength John Frusciante instills in me, personally inspiring me and giving me hope in this lonely lifestyle. The SNL performance was when John was close to first quitting and in very poor mental health, this is not the stuff of jokes. He was in a hellish place. When at his peak, nothing touches John live, I had the honour of seeing him 7 times between 02 & 07 with the Chili's, only once where they any less than excellent. Imagine Dragons are overly polished pop in comparison, so bland. The fact that you are raising them speaks about the poor state of current rock.

Just my 2 cents: John doesn't really seem to have a Gilmour influence, but they end up sounding like each other a little bit. Both have the Hendrix vibe but their melodic stuff and minimalism comes from different places. In John's case, it seems to have originated from his post-punk and progressive rock influences, and to a certain extent electronic and classical music. He also has more of that Fripp/Page/Hendrix aggression in his soloing. Although I love Gilmour, it seems he has in a way just slowed the blues way down in a beautiful way.

An amazing guitarist. But I’m sure the coolness comes from the long sleeved T shirt / Lumberjack shirt combo. The elegantly waisted look works for everyone 😷😎😇

John Frusciante is one of my favorite guitar players. Without him I don't listen to much RHCP. He's their best.

A 20 minute video about JF and you barely talk about his solo output at all and completely ignore his amazing 2004/5 run of 6 albums in as many months.

RHCP was the first band ever I fell in love with when I was little kid and didn't know shit about music (not that it changed much since tho...). I was listening some popular shit on radio and TV but it was Californication and Otherside that made me get for a first time goosebumps because of a song. After that there were Nirvana, Metallica, Guns n roses... but maybe thanks to RHCP including Frusciante I'm not listening to some shit like Cardi b right now... thank god.

Also, about an year ago I started listening to the solo stuff from Frusciante and it's incredible. Before I was judgung him for leaving RHCP so often but now hearing his solo stuff I can understand. It's unique, simple but accomplished, insane but deep. Higly recommended!

The reason that John has such an amazing sound, Is the best guitarist in the Universe is because he has passion for what he truly loves and that is music! He is truly sincere cares deeply about everything, and because he is such a humble person the trappings of fame became to much for someone so young to deal with such fan expectations of his persona. Remember, he joined the Chili Peppers at barely eighteen! Now, i see that he is become truly mature, can handle true fame and he truly loves all the RHCP guys. He is well on his way to tour and handle fame. He now knows he was self medicating by using heroin. I believe he now has the awareness to know that addiction is a disease and will seek help if the urges manifest themselves again. John, is truly humble, and I think the media would do well by not bringing up his past mistakes with addiction. That era is over! Look if Keith Richards now is sober and clean and everyone. Is thrilled over him! Keith, was right he told a BCC interviewer that part of my life is over, I have boundaries today and I will not talk about my past with drugs any longer. John, should take this tip from Keith. The Past Is the past and time to move on and creative and get ready for a happier time for his life! He is truly a great human being, so is Anthony, Flea, and Chad! I wish all of them and their families the best in life both today tomorrow and always! Love this group! And love all of them❤️🙏Kathie🌻
