Why was not petition to put the country under the UK/US? Because the Lebanese felt no affinity to the Anglo-Saxon 😝🤪🤣😁

Because it was a French colony (EHEM...Mandate sorry), of course, they think that it's because the French love them and care for them, in reality, it's very simple when a country colonizes you, they'll spread their language, culture, and norms unto you, it isn't because of some sort of SpeCiaL RelAtioNsHIp, countries have interests, not relationships (in most cases, of course, there are exceptions, but when two countries actually DO have a special relationship they are usually two strong and powerful countries, not some small, tribal, and divided 3rd world country in the middle east.)

Well, that's partially true, but you're forgetting that france also wanted to have a foothold in the region to protect its possessions in the "holy land", and also we wanted to be there as a protector of the maronite christian communities here, at a time were this was something countries cared about. if the point was only to spread french culture and stuff, we would have forcefully converted people so as to not have to deal with all those religious groups.

The French language was introduced by French colonization of the Muslim Med , the reason that France colonized the Mideast was because the Maronite Church lobbied the French to colonize the Mideast, it started when the Maronite Church called for a Genocide agonist the Druze ( so mount Lebanon would be exclusively for Christians the Orthodox Church refused to join the Maronite war on the Druze in fact some orthodox sided with the Druze against the Maronite , the Maronite were defeated after more then 15000 Maronites were killed the War mongering Maronite Church which refused the calls of peace by the Druze started to call for peace and coexistence after the Maronite collapsed on one hand on the other hand they were secretly calling for the French to come and colonize the Mideast to save the Catholic Maronite and advance their sectarian political agenda , after the French arrived the church returned to arrogance and demanded the punishment of the Druze who’s only crime that they defended their people from the church Genocide against them and indeed the Druze were executed while the war mongering Maronite Church were treated as royalty by the French and an Apartheid state that favored the Maronite was crated many Maronite want to return to Apartheid although the current constitution grunts them more rights then any group they considered it unfair to them because they want to go back to the Apartheid system ( ironically the current system is Apartheid were the Christian minority have more rights then other groups including the Muslim majority ) .

Hello Uptin as a Lebanese born and raised and married to a French ...I would like to comment the following since the Information are not accurate: 1-not everyone speaks French in Lebanon ... Mostly east , south, and north areas of Lebanon they dont speak French the majority 2-french president visits Lebanon not for the love of French to Lebanese geopolitically they want a foothold on the Mediterranean to have the resources as British has Cyprus Russia has Syria...Israel turkey Egypt ...etc 3-the largest immigration community of Lebanese immigrants is in Latin America not France so having the French passport doesn't make any special relationship 4-"french people tend to go to lebanon more than other country" is so WRONG ..... anyone can check the statistics and Lebanon wasn't under french empire it was barley 20 years mandate..... actually talking to french they don't know where Lebanon is they miss guide it with Libya often 5-"lebanese speaking other languages makes them open to other opinions and tolerant to others" I will just laugh.....hahahahhaha I leave this for your own experience 6-"our laws were imported by France" actually that was in the 1920s due to the mandate and they have never developed actually if u dig in the Lebanese laws we are so much delayed in comparison to other countries including France MY PERSONAL OPINION: lebanese have nothing related to France and french society doesn't give a fuck about Lebanese .....only is that part of the Lebanese community think by speaking French they have a more connection to Europe which makes them not Arabs because they believe Arabs are lower level than them which is stupid ofcourse. Lebanese communities they have extremely Arabic tribal mentality check it in their political system and religious blindness ....their leaders are by religion and descendance of the same family.....in reality no one in the world sees Lebanon more connected to Europe actually they see it another Arabic country ...french have more connection to Algeria and Tunisia than Lebanon.

@F S it is not only about speaking the language....huge amount of Lebanese truly think that they are more Europeans than Arabs...judging by that we go drink alcohol and have some nightclubs ...that's stupid.....the Turks ruled Lebanon more than 350 years and compared 20 years France rule I didn't see anyone speaking Turkish...
@walid-wl9uo
@walid-wl9uo 3 жыл бұрын
@mathieu-_-2010 no my friend you are absolutely wrong with all respect and I will explain you why: 1-you are not a French speaking community ...you are an Arabic/shami community who likes to speak French among each other .....don't forget you are not the only who speak French Algeria Tunisia ...etc and half of Africa speak French with other countries in the world due to colonization which I mean literally french people were living there( this didn't happen in Lebanon ) and these countries never recognise themselves as french. So the language is not more than a mean of communication but I don't understand why some Lebanese speak it among each other 2-the relationship of area/religion is so wrong dówntown Beirut and the surrounding area...hamra ..etc looks more like Europe than jounih and jbeil...and people there also speak 3 languages and go to parties etc... So the difference is only religion but that doesn't mean Christian = Europe and Muslim = gulf of Arabia go to the Christians in the mountains and they speak Arabic among each other not french...don't forget that the Lebanese educational system forces a 2nd language so basically all people who go to school learn other language the issue if they talk it among themselves in daily life or no ...that doesn't have to do with Europe and being western As.a result remember that UAE Dubai is an Arabic country and received more djs bands parties and night clubs more than lebanon and all the western world want to go visit Dubai and it is modernized without loosing it's Arabic culture France government and french people see u Arab no more no less go to french embassy and tell them I am Christian. I want to go to France they tell you go make visa like everyone else and visas are given to gulf people faster and easier than to Lebanese .... Lebanon is an Arabic tribal poor mentality they elect their leaders by family religion and they never change and as a result of that if Lebanese were more like Europe the country would have looked more like Europe not a poor zero services country....

Whill I agree with 95% of what you said... Your choice of painting the Arabs with tribalism and backward mentality is just wrong.... Yes, the Lebanese are Tribal people, they are separated on religion, and yes they have backward mentality at least at the moment. But that doesn't mean that the reason they have this is because they are Arab. Go see in the USA, or the Nazis, or any community. They all have tribalism, it's a human trait which needs to be fought. Not an Arab trait. If you look at history, you'd see Arabs coexisted with all types of people, be it Turks, Spanish, Christians, Jews, etc...

Thank you Uptin for the good overview of Lebanon ❤ I'm Lebanese & lived in France back in the days for 7 yrs straight. Many Lebanese have family members with French citizenship. My dad, 3 stepbrothers, stepsister & practically all my cousins have the French citizenship. Our national flag back then (before we took our independence in 1943) was the French flag with the the Lebanese Cedar in the middle (Flag of the State of Greater Lebanon, from 1920 till 1943). Our current national flag that we know now was adopted in December of 1943. This explains explains a bit the history of Lebanon & France's historical relationship throughout the yrs: In 1920, soon after the end of World War I, the League of Nations mandated that Lebanon would be administered by France after the Partition of the Ottoman Empire. Lebanon officially became part of the French colonial empire, as part of the French Mandate for Syria & the Lebanon, & was administered from Damascus. From 1929 to 1931, Charles de Gaulle was posted as General Staff of the Levant Troops in Beirut. During World War II, Lebanon was initially administered by Vichy France. By 1942, the territory came under Free France. In August of that same year, General De Gaulle returned to Lebanon, to meet with the occupying British forces who had entered the territory to prevent German advances into the Levant. Lebanon has officially declared its independence from France on the 22nd of November, 1943,

Before the french mandate we have had good relations with France, Italy and the Catholic church. Some of our most prestigious schools and universities are present since way back. A typical middle class lebanese habitant would speak all three languages but some only speak english depending on the high school they attended. Many adults just need to practice their french to remember it but english is easy for everyone and not that hard to speak. Even our Arabic dialect sounds ten times better than other dialects because its smooth and fluent: many maghrebi girls have told me so. Not to mention how much we’re appreciated and loved in France because of our hard work and good social status. While in the USA they would not even know to show Lebanon on the map.

When I was in Lebanon I was told that there was a certain resentment against using the French language because the schools forced the kids to speak French instead of Arabic. I met lots of people who preferred to speak English than French. My guess is that certain nationalism in the Lebanese people had a bit to do with that. I think your videos are very interesting and eye opening.

Arabic was also enforced upon Lebanese through history during Arabic conquests. So what’s your point?
@Jewzi123
@Jewzi123 3 жыл бұрын
Saying Arabic was enforced on the Levant is like saying Hebrew was Enforced on Jews , the Byzantines were already colonizing the Mideast and Greek was becoming the language of the Mideast after Latin was abandoned in favor of Greek , Also The Levantine Muslims are genetically closer to each other and to Saudi then they are to other Levantines like the Maronite Lebanese who came from Turkey escaping Byzantine prosecution ( the closest people to canaanites are also Saudis based on the discovery of 4000 year old graves , finally the ancient homeland of Saudis and Arab Levantines is the Levant so they are not invaders but natives of the Mideast and Levant and Arabia which is natural , since they are not from Europe or the moon .
@Jewzi123
@Jewzi123 3 жыл бұрын
Yes France was enforced on Muslims but not on Maronite Christians who welcomed it and consider France their mother , Lebanon was Crated by France for the Maronite, it originally wanted to establish a small Christian state but the Maronite wanted More lands this is why the Muslims were included in Lebanon , but the Maronite later on tried to send the Shiite to Iraq and to cleanse the Sunnis but they failed as they failed with the Druze .
@Jewzi123
@Jewzi123 3 жыл бұрын
The Story Of Lebanon started when The Maronite Catholic Church in Mount Lebanon requested France to colonize the Mideast ( the background in short ) : The Maronite Church declared war on the Druze minority giving the Druze 2 options either face Genocide or to abandon their homes and lands to the Catholics ( in short ethnic cleansing) , the Druze tried to convince the church not to attack them or ethnically cleanse them but the church refused and labeled the Druze the enemy of the Cross and infidels that needs to be destroyed, After the attack started many Druze were killed but eventually the Druze despite there small numbers managed to defeat the Maronite Catholic militants of the church killing over 15000 of them, the Catholics collapsed and lost, As a result the war mongering church started to call for peace and coexistence on one hand on the other they secretly were lobbying Catholic France to save them this was the excuse that the French used to colonize the Mideast in the name of protecting the Catholics,,, the Druze who defended them self were punished under pressure from the church and France while the church was treated like royalty ,,, France also introduced dangerous policy such as the policy of Minority’s against the Majority which is the source of conflict in the region especially in the Levant , making French colonization the most dangerous in the region , while the Crusaders and Mongols killed almost half the population of the Levant , the Crusaders impact faded away but the impact of the Mongols and French colonization remains to this day the Mongols are responsible for the Sunni Shiite conflict we see today , the French are also responsible for the conflicts in the Levant by introducing the policy of minority’s against the majority and rearranging population demographics Iran today has inherited the policy of minority’s against the majority, the undermining of Sunnis in the levant by France has allowed Iran to dominate Lebanon and more importantly Syria .

Interesting to watch this video 2 years later. Uptin doesn't know that sometimes some of his videos have an impact on some people. This video and other events made me research this subject. And boy did I discover all the history. We don't get taught these things at school, that's why people don't know. And depends where you go in Lebanon and who you speak with, France can be "La tendre mère" and a very beloved language or it can be the "Colonial occupier". The short answer is that we have relations with France since the Middle ages. and yes French missionaries were the first to come and build schools and hospitals. When I say we, I mean my ancestors (Christians). However, for the last 100 and something years, Lebanese from all sects learn in french speaking schools, and also study/live in France. Especially also with the pact of 1943, which gave us Lebanon

Cliches aside, my experience has been that most Lebanese don't speak French to any decent level, English is far more ubiquitous, among the French-education schools, only a handful impart good speaking and writing skills, most French-educated Lebanese are more comfortable speaking and writing in English even if they've never had a formal education in English, and most Lebanese are perfectly capable of speaking Arabic and expressing complex ideas in Arabic. In fact I think Arabic is regaining popularity as a way of connecting Lebanese of all classes. So, all in all, this is a video is picking up where unexamined cliches left off and putting no real effort into imparting new, accurate info.

What you said in the first part is completely true, only a handful speak fluent french (without an accent as well). On the other hand slang lebanese arabic is very common among the youth mixed with so many english words. However; when it comes to modern standard arabic also known as "fosha" the youth dont know anything about it and its level at schools is being dropped with time to accommodate the capacities of this youth that doesnt comprehend it at all. I compare what my nephews are taking in 5th grade now to what i took in first and second grade its absolutely the same. There is an important point everyone is missing: french language goes way back than the french mandate, it was in fact a justification for the french to take Lebanon. It goes back to the crusades, who were mostly frankish, and after the crusade state, they were integrated to the Syriac Maronites (hense non arabic or syriac words like "zet" "to throw" which comes from the frankish "jette"). Then came many french missionary send by the church specially jesuits and opened many schools and universities, and that's why historically Lebanon has a very high education level despite everything. That all was a justification used by France to take Lebanon instead of the British.

These Lebanese were fleeing religious persecution and lived in Mount Lebanon for years. These people were not Arabs and did not consider themselves Arabs, but they spoke Arabic because of the rule of fact and were keen to distinguish themselves from the Arabs. But because of the influence of Arab nationalist ideas and their accession to Lebanon in the Arab League, as well as the high percentage of Muslims there, and because of this, many Lebanese express themselves as Arabs.

The question is irrelevant - the effects are really apparent though, a collapsing and nearly impossible to resurrect Lebanese economy is the outcome for copying French modules including language that’s why many African nations try to cut themselves from the francophonie union. French is an irrelevant language today.

@@berrlett I’m Lebanese, and as it seems, it has practically no political or economic influence in Lebanon, unlike Iran. So they are not doing anything to divide the country, they simple send aid, and we, mainly Christians, inherited their language and cultures. As a matter of fact, a decent number of Lebanese voted for France to take over, although it’s only 25k people, which is nothing compared to the ~6M citizens, it’s still something to consider.

@@jbj7799 You made a point about French economy and my reply is above, France and overseas wealth, Lebanon is not a wealthy country for them to have any sort of interest in it, the wealth mentioned above is primarily African/North African ex colonies that’s why you see their army in Mali, Burkina and so on. So if they’re not interested in you but you love their language and heritage that’s up to you. Here in Europe they’re not that popular- a lot of their qualified and graduates cross borders to Northern Europe , Holland, Germany etc to wipe tables at cafes and bars for better salary than what they have home.

Even in the beginning of 20th century, arabs in those region was speaking French instead of Arabic. French was classy and they were so proud to speak French. Some people's French was better than their Arabic. Like how Russia invaded and made Russian their second language in Azerbeijan, Kazakhstan ect. This is how you conquer a country. You make them accept and embrace your culture and use your language. And they will give their country to you willingly.

You should have asked those questions to a more diverse demographics. As for the language, most think they can speak french the truth is they barely can. It's a third language for most. Maybe it's well spoken in some not all very westernized families, because it's a marker for how well you're doing in life or some sort of distorted idea of heritage

The only people attached to French language are the Catholic Maronite like your self most of the population prefer English ( The Maronite prefer French because they lobbied the French to colonize the Mideast to advance thier sectarian policy which destroyed the Mideast especially the levant including demographic force changes and the policy of minority’s against the majority which is the key source of conflicts and suffering in the Mideast it was introduced by the French , every country the French have colonized turned into failed divided states .
