Damn...I could totally relate to you and Luigi. Trust me. Hell, I always preferred Luigi over Mario because I could totally see myself in him. I always argued that I liked him because he seemed better than Mario from a physical stand point, but really it was all just because I saw myself in him so much. Especially with the whole "ideal self" thing. I've always wanted to be a hero. I've always wanted to be in the limelight, to be respected and admired. I always wanted to be known as a selfless, brave hero. But in situations where push comes to shove, I get incredibly scared, and I want to run. I want to run away so much. Not only that, but like with the dream Luigi had about the airship crashing, there are plenty, PLENTY of times where I worry to a point of unrealism. Even when in the moment of fear I know that it'll never happen, I can't help but feel on edge, adrenaline pulsing through me. Thank you so much for making this video, Treesicle, and Grant...let's hope that we both get over our anxiety.

I preferred Luigi too, but that was becouse Mario and many other characters were unrealistically adventurous or brave. People have to be honest and say that if they saw a lighting strike in the back behind a nightmarish horror mansion and a door *goddamn* *shut’s* behind them by itself, would be in some way traumitized and definetly severly traumitized after seeing ghosts in dark horrific places wandering around like they should be, instead of being a normal ... whatever ... and stay in heaven or hell.

I can 100% relate. First of all, I'm very prone to the nightmares; I've fallen out of bed a few times because of it. It literally gets so bad that I have to pray to NOT dream at all out of fear of the nightmares. Most of my nightmares are about a car crash or a plane crash. I startle so easily the people around me laugh. I once nearly hit my head on the ceiling because I startled so intensely that I jumped THAT high! I never have to clip my nails because I bite them off. I had a big brother recently ship off, and soon my twin is too, and that gives me worries (WORRIES IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT.) I do in fact space out. And add insult to injury, my twin (that I mentioned earlier) has it all together, meanwhile, I'm a damn mess; I AM an awkward mother f***er. I doubt I have a full on anxiety disorder, but I am very prone to anxiety attacks.

I don't know why, but near the end of this video i started crying. I just feel sorry for Luigi and can relate to him in some ways and he is also my favorite character in the games (next to Yoshi) and it makes me feel sad to see him like that. Even though its his personality or something like that, I still feel sad. Now I know what he's feeling and it makes me want to cry even more. I personally think that there should be more games where Luigi is the main character because I feel like he gets underestimated because Mario's always in the spotlight and Luigi is just his shadow. And also because Mario is always the one saving the day and Luigi is on the sidelines, watching. And I know that he helps out Mario in some games,, and i'm not saying he's weak or anything bt his attack strength is lower than Mario's, even just by a little. Now you all might think differently but this is what I think. I think that I sometimes get too attached to fictional characters cause I feel like I know whats happening to them, even though i'm not going though anything like that.

dude, i always thought i saw a lot of myself in Luigi like overthinking, nervousness, fears that the people he loves the most will get hurt. hell, in Dream Team, at the bit where Dreamy Luigi becomes one with the stars, there's all these messages of braveness and positivity, but then there's one that just says "Don't leave me." and that _really_ hit home for me, and shows that we're both afraid of people leaving us. i think that's part of why i love Luigi as a character so much, he's relatable and i'm able to connect with him on a deeper level.

Enjoyed your highly-detailed and well-researched analysis of Luigi. That it's due to how his brain is because of generalized anxiety disorder is very compelling based on Luigi already having delayed reactions and also him still being nervous/scared even after the events of Luigi's Mansion. His sleep patterns, anxiety-fillled nightmares, and lack of mind-body integration was also compelling evidence. This is the first video analysis that argues Luigi's apparent stupidity is actually a result of his mind racing and an overabundance of thoughts. An alternate explanation, based on Luigi's characterization in the TV show, that Luigi had it together in mundane situations, but repeated exposure to strange peril left him persistently terrified, though I do like your explanation of Luigi having generalized anxiety disorder. It's hopeful that after the events of Luigi's Mansion, Luigi's self-conception as expressed by his dreamworld self is greatly improved. There's another aspect to that though, and that Luigi's actualizing of his confident dream self has so far only been manifested in a dark self, since he redirects his insecurities outward against the world, and primarily against Mario. Luigi's history as the neglected bro then comes fully into play, even though Luigi's idiosyncracies have been with him all his life. Those very idiosyncracies however, give him an advantage in Super Smash Bros., and he's fairly elegant fighting in midair, his Negative Zone brings the other characters into his disoriented world, and his gentle, self-effacing kick sends even the mighty Mewtwo careening to temporary doom. If Luigi freeing himself from his constant barrage of thoughts, worries, and analysis, without also becoming evil, means that he would be confident, fearless, and traditionally heroic, that means he would be a little less introspective. In reality, it's not really a great idea to run into a dark room full of malicious ghosts without cognizance of the hazards. A lot of stuff Mario does is daredevil and he seems to lack an instinct for self-preservation. Luigi might be overly-scared at times, but in a world where flying chestnuts with a spike on their head can bite you, and a poison mushroom actively chases you, then maybe Luigi is reasonable to panic over a harmless cockroach. But then again, Luigi also takes account of every possible and impossible thing that could go wrong, so his anxiety in a lot of cases is disproportionate, as you mentioned, and it certainly is ongoing, and definitely affects his everyday activities, making the level of his anxiety more negative than neutral or positive. But as for Luigi's unique flailing fighting style, that might not be determined by him being overanxious/spaced out/overanalytical nor his lack of confidence, but a neurological divergence which affects things like balance and coordination, how one sits, walks, runs, throws, etc. Viewed in this light, anxiety disorder is one part of what shape Luigi's traits, the other parts are his history of being neglected/ignored and his differing neurology.

I actually do feel for both you and Luigi, Grant. I've suffered from GAD since I was in grade school but I've managed it in my own way, mostly creative writing and drawing and such but I do still find my mind wandering from time to time and current issues in my life aren't making those zone-outs any better. We all make our own progress in such things and have our own setbacks as well. What matters is you keep pushing until you find what works and keep going with it whether it's playing a sport, working with your hands, or (in my case) writing tons of fanfiction to occupy those feelings of anxiety with something akin to pride and success. 5:45 Luigi's attack stats are actually lower than Mario's by default. Both for the Baby and Adult versions, and for every other game in the series this is also true. Luigi's attack wasn't lower due to timing accuracy, it was the stats themselves. Also his lower attack is compensated for with a higher stache (luck) stat, and higher HP stat.

This may be a very late response, but I have a severe anxiety disorder. Everything you've explained is what I have and it doesn't get better on its own. It gradually gets worse without therapy or medical treatment. Anxiety attacks also mimic cardiovascular symptoms as well, and you also develop constant bodily aches. You can't help it, I've tried to think positive and do positive but negative thoughts flood my mind before hand. I get scared of my own shadow and I freak out over the smallest things. It's very serious and people with a severe anxiety disorder suffer. I'm now currently undergoing treatment thankfully, but sadly an anxiety disorder can't be fully treated, but it can be surpressed. So Luigi may be my virtual avatar. Lol but honestly.. luigi deserves more. He's going through way too much pain and suffering, something he can't control, but he tries his best to. That makes luigi a damn strong character.
