Why Is McDonald's Struggling In The Philippines? Jollibee

McDonald's and Burger King have both been struggling in the Philippines because of local rival Jollibee, and now the Filipino fast-food chain is making a play for the American market.
McDonald's is an American fast-food behemoth. With more than 37,000 restaurants in 120 countries, the chain dominates pretty much every market it chooses to enter. But in the Philippines, where McDonald's has been trying and failing for nearly 40 years to be No. 1, a local chain is giving McDonald's a run for its money: Jollibee.
Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC), which has a market capitalization of around $5 billion, owns 14 brands with 4,300 restaurants around the world. Its Jollibee brand has over 1,300 locations and is the largest fast-food chain in the Philippines, operating a domestic network of over 1,000 stores.
The corporation has also embarked on a self-confessed "aggressive" international expansion strategy that has resulted in operations in the U.S., Vietnam, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei.

At first, we didn’t care because we were going to McDonald’s, we always see Jollibee everywhere so it caught our attention, we tried eating at Jollibee and it was so delicious! Simple explanation....Jollibee represents Filipino culture, it reminds most Filipinos back when they were still a child and their parents or relatives used to take them there to cheer them up, spend family time or celebrate a special occasion. Why? Because not a lot of Filipinos can afford to take their children to fancy restaurants or expensive outings. Whilst it may seem cheap and weird to spend quality time with your family in Jollibee you have to understand this is part of the Filipino family traditions, rich or poor. When we Filipinos take a bite on that crispy Chickenjoy served with gravy poured over rice , the nice sweet spaghetti bolognese with hot dogs or the warm, sweet peach mango pie it brings us back happy childhood memories, it reminds us of the time we spent with our families. Jollibee is Philippines' national pride and treasure!

Ya alot of the stuff the Philippines have are frkn nasty man. Everything is too sweet over there and in Asian culture, it's as if they don't understand spice. What they consider hot is bland in Mexican Culture, and what they do have that's spicy, tastes more like a hot mess, but I think the absolute nastiest thing over there in Phillipines and alot of Asian Cultures (Seperated respectfully of course although the flavors seem to fall into a pattern for some reason) is the candy... What really set Jollibee apart is their marketing, they had specifically targeted family. They marketed themselves from the beginning as a place for families to enjoy together, something that you go to after Sunday mass. If you know your market you could position yourself to the market's value and in this case "family" for the Philippine market and it would also be nice to mention that their Mascot is loved by almost everyone, children and adults would squeal in delight and runs for a hug every time Jollibee is around, something that I could not say with Ronald McDonald. And additional info McDonald's at first didn't sell rice with their chicken something that an ordinary Filipino would find amusing.

Jollibee does not only sell fast foods they give you the nostalgia of just being there, reminiscing those times when your parents fulfilled their promise to take you to jollibee whenever you do good in school, you helped in household chores or celebrating your birthdays. Anyone rich and poor alike could relate to that.

I'm American but lived in the Philippines for a couple years. Jollibee's basic burger patty flavor tastes "off" to Americans, I think; maybe too sweet and not beefy enough. But I actually did really like the Aloha burger-that pineapple makes it. And Jollibee's fries are really very good-perfectly crispy-and I thought they were the better than the fries at all the American chains there. And chicken joy isn't bad at all. I doubt one will come to my city in the States, but I'd be there if it did. But what I _really_ want is a Mang Inasal! Oh my gosh, everything I've had there is incredible. That paa with unli rice and a halo halo. I'd be all over a Mang Inasal if it came here.

Jollibee just caters to the filipino taste that's the difference. It's like Starbucks opening in Italy...where the citizens are real coffee aficionados. Only tourists will go there and very few natives

Also try some Black Rifle Coffee, it is absolutely delicious being incredibly smooth and the frankly the only coffee I can drink black besides cafe de olla (which is technically cheating since there is a bunch of cinnamon and sugar in it).

Jollibee has been part of the filipino culture since then, it is really familly oriented. Especially if you tell a filipino kid like "you wanna go to joillibee?" then they'll be happy as hell.
