Today we will be talking about the uncomfortable truth that Mexico is just not as affordable as it used to be. Will it get worse? What is going on? What can you do about it? Will Mexico still be an affordable destination? I try to answer these questions and more in todays video. #mexico #costofliving #livinginmexico

It's always funny, almost hilarious, in Mexico, the Philippines, or any expat popular developing nation. The Vloggers keep telling people "if you only have $1,000, or if you only have $1,500, you can't live here anymore! Because somehow $1,000 or $1,500 magically goes further in the USA? So the $6 haircut is now $7.5 vs $20 in the US? Or the mechanic was $20/hr is now $25/hr compared to $125/hr in the US? And these numbers are higher than many places. So somehow 1/2 or 1/3 or 1/5 the US price is worse? Which is better, living poor in the USA, NEVER going out, NEVER travelling, NEVER getting haircuts or dental work, and scrapping by on the cheapest food. Or living in Mexico/Philippines, having a cheap apartment, scrapping by on less expensive food, being ABLE to pay 1/3 for haircuts, 1/3 for glasses, 1/3 for dental work, 1/3 for services? And occasionally going out or taking a trip? As opposed to doing none of that in the USA? Yes, in the US there are "support programs" for the really poor, but once you get over about $1,200 they drop away. Yeah, people are no longer upper-middle class in Mexico for $1,200 per month, now they might be only "lower middle class". But in the USA $1,200 is poor, poor, and maybe homeless

True! Depending on the state, the annual income needed to afford rent on a one-bedroom ranges from around $24,500 to around $64,600 in the US. My entire SS check goes for rent and utilities. There is maybe on good utility months, about $50 left for everything else. If it wasn't for social programs, I would be on the streets. I don't need fancy, I just need affordable. I'd be eternally thankful for even HALF PRICE of what I pay here.

Totally agree! The other thing I see in the comments is the ignorant comment 'I cant afford Mexico anymore. Im going back to the US or Canada'. What?? I always reply with 'going back to what'? How will you afford anything in the US or Canada? If you cant make it in Mexico you sure as hell are not going make it in the US or Canada.

You are making your budget of $500 for 2 people for food and restaurants. My budget for food is $200 for 2 people in CDMX cooking at home. For most people in Mexico $200 Mo thats enough for 2 peopĺe. I am Mexican.
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels Жыл бұрын
$500 is not just for food but also toiletries and many other household items most people over look until they are doing their budget. But yes I totally agree with what you said. Don't just take my advice. Everyone should do their own research and figure out their own budget. In this video I was just using an average cost based on my own personal costs for me, my wife, and dog. Everyone will have a different budget. 500 USD divided by 30 equals around 17 USD a day or about 300 pesos a day. For food, toilet paper, cleaning products, eating out, and everything that revolves around that. So yes I agree with you, on just food alone it can be much cheaper, but when you add things like coffee, wine, dog food and so many other things it adds up quickly.

Today normal middle class lifestyle in Mexico I'd say is at $1200 a month, but if you want to live like a king you're already at over $2000 a month in most places, maybe even $2500 if you're talking certain resort towns. The US has not been very proficient in handling it's economy , but the main reason for the strong Peso is Mexico's outstanding performance . . . Proof of this is that in other countries the USD is still strong. Greetings.
@dennishassler605
@dennishassler605 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffokriya3389 AMLO has said he wants to bring the dollar down to 16 pesos, so certain other countries still value the dollar more than Mexico does. It will likely return more to value over time. Mexico has let the value of the dollar drop by 20% where most other countries may have let it drop by 10%. Still, if you move to Mexico you will live much better than you do here. If you just stay clear of tourist areas, you'll experience better pricing, because pricing is tied to the labor rates for the people - stay in the native neighborhoods and you'll do just fine.

Merida is a beautiful city but....There are other cities in Mexico that are far more affordable than Merida. I'm looking at a city in the mountains that has everything you need and is much cheaper than the expat destinations like Merida and Guanajuato. I live a very simple lifestyle. I want to live like Mexicans do, and not the rich Mexicans, just the everyday Mexicans. Most people looking to come to MX want to live a high-fallutin' lifestyle on poor people's budget. I met a woman from Paraguay and she showed me a really nice home for like 50K, most basic needs like food and medical care are also still very cheap. On the other hand you can forget about any amenities or comforts from home (US) like fast food chains, clothing/malls, amazon shopping, etc. Paraguay is also kind of in the middle of nowhere so coming and going back to your original country will be time consuming and expensive. If you don't care about chilling down there for long periods of time then I would look into it.

Pretty much impossible to predict the future...when someone starts out saying "if trends continue...", you can ignore the rest. US social security income is inflation adjusted every year, it's not static. Rental income increases with inflation. Real estate value increases with inflation. In tourist towns and in tourist areas of those towns the prices are higher, but if you stay away from the main tourist areas and eat at local restaurants, it's much, much more economical. Also, if you are off season, you can pay half the price for accommodations - be certain to ask for lower rates off season.

I believe Mexico is the new China. Tourism cant be too high otherwise folks will go elsewhere. Remittance could be curtailed when transferring US dollars for sure. Let's not forget that hundreds of thousands of Americans and Canadian folks move to Mexico and bring plenty of money. That is a huge plus for the over all Mexican economy. Middle and lower class US citizens are so quick to retire. Once you jump out of the "working class plane," you need to make sure you have a parachute. Often, it's the ones with limited financial resources who are so quick to retire but they had NO problem working for someone for 40 years. Don't have a mid-life crisis on $1,000 a month and say now it's my time only to end up poor (use technology). Personally, I am NOT compromising my lifestyle "hoping" I can make it. I'd rather create an online business or work remotely to add multi streams of income to mitigate inflation. Who brainwashed us to believe we should work for 40 years and try to make it on $1,000 Dollars (US Scam)? Invent yourself, find ways to create passive income THEN consider moving to a place where it's cheaper with lower taxes. YOU CAN"T OUT RUN INFLATION ON A LOW FIXED INCOME.

$500 for food? Is this for two people? I don't spend half that much in the U.S., so that cost would be a lot less for me. The rent sounds really cheap to me. I was thinking of $300-500 a month. I could live in a studio for less, but would prefer a 1 BR. I don't plan to bring a car, so I won't have those expenses. Overall, I still pay much more for everything here. My rent here is cheap, and it's $735. My utilities & internet run about $200 a month. I live on a $961 SS check, so I have to get food stamps and medicaid to be able to live. I make a little bit online, usually about $200 a month. I planned on moving down next summer, and I'm praying the dollar gets stronger before then. It all depends on who wins the election next year. I've lived through a few inflationary periods, and they don't last forever. This one is already starting to ease off, because people have stopped buying many consumer goods because they can't afford them. It's getting to a breaking point. Thanks for your information.

The purchasing power of the dollar is to blame and is the REAL problem for ALL Americans (not a 20% increase of prices in Mexico - which just adds insult to injury) due to the FEDs constant printing of money. The more money in the money supply there is to buy the same number of goods and services, the higher the prices will climb in the United States to buy things and the less the dollar will be worth in other countries. Now it is a paltry 17 pesos when it used to be 20? That is pathetic! Americans need to put their foot down and stop allowing the central banks to do this. It is STEALING indirectly if your money is only worth 80% as much as it was. It is the same as if someone out right steals 20% of your money! Then if Mexican prices are also higher it is going to cost you even MORE money.

Once they see people aren't paying attention, have stopped voting and aren't buying into their fear mongering, which they use to control everyone, they lose their power. Remember no human has a moral right or a natural right or any legitimate authority to control another human including throw them in a cage or extort money from them or harm them in any way if they have never harmed anyone. Rather they should be left alone to live their lives. People should be able to participate in causes on a volunteer basis and not be forced to otherwise. Whereas in our so called "democracy" the 51% forces their will on the 49%! What kind of moral "free" society does that? People say we have a representative republic. Well representatives know the persons they represent and their views. Politicians don't. Larken Rose points out that republics are authoritarian ruling classes. There is nothing special about them. Yeah I’m looking at going back to Texas and back to work. Doesn’t help I’m feeding lots of hungry animals here.. 1500/mo is not cutting it going into savings too much.. decent groceries, gasoline, any goods i need for household unless it’s handmade down the street. decent car was 165,000 -more than i had anticipated spending. Not just the weak dollar/ string peso inflation here as well. Trying to find cheaper rent in the city over before i pack it up. ✌🏼

@@JoseArteagaTravels I differ in my ideas about what is to come. We don’t know all the variables and you have great insights. I have some ideas but not as concrete. I believe Mexico as a whole will prosper greatly but over much more time and it has to get rid of the cartels. Mexico needs a bunch of Bukele’s like El Salvador has… The USA is in my estimation going to come back stronger. Any Republican President will make the big difference. I know it’s political and that’s a gamble but if the US is going to survive, we need some Bukele’s also!! ❤️ Say hi to your horse!

With many countries the dollar may be down 10%, generally, but in Mexico it's down 20% and that's true with Colombia as well. In Brazil and the Philippines it's down more like 10%. It seems there's an effort to cheapen the dollar in Mexico - the future will soon tell us the direction. At least, I can drive my car to Mexico, which is nice.

Drive your car to Mexico? Where in Mexico? Are you going to live in Mexico or just visit? Unless you are in the 'free zones' you will have to pay import tax and other fees to bring your car for longer than a visit. For visiting (which folks do for long periods), you are definitely going to need a TIP. I really hope you have done your research.

@@kellyname5733 Thank you Kelly! I have often spent summers in Mexico, but usually go their summers to escape the AZ heat. I usually hub from P.V. and tour other areas in Mexico. Lately, the dollar has lost 20% in Mexico and Colombia, but only 10% in Brazil and the Philippines, so Americans should consider that while traveling - my brother lives in the Philippines. I like taking my car to Mexico and I bring my dogs with me - my smaller dog was a street dog from P.V. and she's an amazingly intelligent and affectionate dog. We love Mexico, but they have been squeezing the dollar for a long time already.

@@jenniferressmannwriter Yes, my cousins have some Condos in Rocky Point and they go there often - I occasionally go there, but much prefer the Mexico in the tropics, too, because the weather's better and it's more like the real Mexico to me. I like the food chain with locally grown fruits and vegetables. If you drive there get Mexican insurance and if you travel deep into Mexico you may need to make a deposit you'll get returned to you on your return trip. Driving in Mexico requires paying attention to detail - for very alert drivers it's not a big deal, but they don't have skirts on the roads as they do here and opposing lane traffic is more dangerous driving - the toll roads are much safer but still not as safe as freeways here, so use the toll roads as much as possible.

!! Jose ...just wandering.. why you always filming or producing your videos in middle to poore neiborhoods in mérida ? Why not in north merida or high class neighborhoods?? For subscribers to have a diffrent perspective about the city ?? Saludos hemano ...bye
@JoseArteagaTravels
@JoseArteagaTravels Жыл бұрын
Honestly because those neighborhoods are far away from me, also the truck wastes a lot of gas to drive up there and sits in lots of traffic in the north. Which is another reason I don't like to film there, mostly due to the traffic. Also the north is basically the same thing you already get in the USA and from my understanding there are other youtubers who live in those areas and try to show them regularly. But due to the fact they are like in the USA they are not very walkable and most of the time stuck in traffic. Also I have driven in those areas in the past and have many videos of walking around the the north of Merida but the reality is that it is not my cup of tea and therefore don't really like to go up there and I am only up there when I have to go up there and in those instances I try to film. Also most of the neighborhoods I show are normal neighborhoods. They might seem poor to you and others who come from the USA and want to live in the North of the city but the reality is that most of my viewers are looking for rent under 300 USD and these are the neighborhoods in which you will find them, not in the north of the city. I could go on and on but I think you get the point. Sorry to disappoint you by not frequenting the nice fancy north of the city on a regular basis.

@@JoseArteagaTravels I live in Reynosa, Tamaulipas. It is not safer here. Last year my wife's son was kidnapped and extorted for $10,000 USD. No, he is not involved in organized crime, we believe it was a case of mistaken identity. His tios that live in McAllen had to help pay that extortion. Last week 28 bodies were found in Reynosa. The list goes on and on all over the country. My wife and I live here because we are saving money to buy a home, we don't know where yet. I am not interested in moving back to the USA, at least not any time soon within the next 10 years. In which city do you live in? I ask because from what expats tell me on social media simply does not jive with the reality I see here on the ground. We are safe where we live in Reynosa because we live in a gated community. Perhaps the crime keeps away from the population where you live but in El Norte and in Michoacán, and Jalisco the crime is in your face. www.nbcnews.com/news/world/mexico-hacked-bodies-graves-reynosa-mcallen-texas-cartels-rcna95330
