One thing you didn't really touch on with the sound design: the lack of ambient noise. Throughout the whole world, there's no ambient noise playing. No birds chirping, no wind blowing, no leaves rustling. The only sounds that don't come from you or the soundtrack come from other mobs. Playing with a mod that adds ambience will noticeably feel less lonely.

@@GrimmSmileexcept those noises only play to tell the player of a structure that's near for example if you're wondering in the overworld in a specific place for a long enough time the cave noise will play to let you know there is a cave beneath you and not just a small patch, whilst in caves you can also hear minecarts being pushed around to let you know there is an abandoned mine shaft near you. I think, at least for me, the best example of something evoking the feeling this video describes is revisiting a hardcore world in spectator after you die It really hits home just how empty the world really is, seeing mobs stand around aimlessly like puppets with no strings, seeing how time practically freezes without you to drive the action

I find a big creep of minecraft to be the utter lack of just, ambient world noise. Hearing that calm but somehow eerie soundtrack over the constant sound of footsteps that seem to go on forever, that even persist for about a second after you stop moving as you slow down, giving you the impression you're being followed, the noise of mobs walking aimlessly, making the occasional groan or attempt to communicate amongst themselves. It feels like you're alone when you focus on it, but feels like you're not alone when you aren't focused. You hear footsteps seemingly right behind you when you stop moving, and you turn around and realize it's just your player slowing down, but it feels like something thats just as fast as the player is chasing you.

I can wholeheartedly agree with this. I am 28 and only recently started playing mc a few months ago. I get kind of engrossed in games like this, and at first, an empty canvas was exhilarating. I enjoyed the learning, the building of farms and exploring. Eventually going to the end and beating the game, then exploring the end itself. There was a lot of fun with it all. But recently, I've kind of hit a wall. I am really alone in life and dont have any friends.. much less anyone to play with. After a while it kind of makes me more depressed and alone than not. Theres a few things I've yet to do, like explore an ancient city or ocean monument. So I can't say I've done *everything*, but.. Well. Once you have all the farms and all the this and that, eventually I'm just left afk, staring into space and listening to that sound track. Feeling so alone I cant help but want to stop playing. I read recently on how minecraft is, essentially, a base-building game. You build your base, add onto your base, make farms in your base, and make new bases. but at a certain point, after doing the few lines of progression in the game, you kind of run out of things to do, except for more base-building. I suppose this is different in groups with actual friends, but.. Well. I don't know. Some days this game just makes me feel more alone than anything.

Love this video and how well it portrays the loneliness of single player I first played minecraft java in multi-player because I wanted to play with my friends in their shared server. Even though it's mostly abandoned now, me and other friends still occasionally log on and play, though at different times. I would use the nether pathways, villager trading hall and other farms built by my friends, and even though most of the time I would be the only person playing in that server, watching the things my friends built would remind me that I wasn't truly alone in that world Which is why when I started my own single player world, the loneliness hit me like a truck. But it wasn't immediate. I felt it in the way there weren't any player-made builds across the dessert. In the way I would harvest then replant my crops, then log back in the next day to my crops Not completely grown (in the multi-player world, I would know of people visiting my house by checking the growth of my crops) I understood that every single change in my single player world that mattered would have to come from me and me only, nobody to build me farms nor nether pathways nor gift me equipment, I would have to do everything myself. Chilling but unforgettable experience

I grew up in a very lonely and abusive atmosphere, when I discovered Minecraft when I was like 14, the vastness and loneliness washed over me immediately, even in that old version of the game. I felt so seen, I felt like the world was built through my own eyes. Minecraft was the first place where I felt at home. Where I learned how to rely on myself. Where I taught myself to move on. The loneliness and simplicity was the core of that experience for me, and the way that core has stayed intact is why I keep coming back.

Instead, they stand back, watching you as you arrive in their home, having appeared out of nowhere. They stare at you from behind blocks, just waiting for an interaction. They'll go out of their way to avoid talking to you. They hide as you pillage their livelihoods, and if you don't, they continue working as normal, as though following lines of code... and you. you don't look like them. you don't follow their code. you are a stranger. you are *the* stranger.

Last time I played this game prior to summer of 2022 was July 2011. I got lost at sea, couldn't find my way back to base and just signed off with then intention of maybe coming back to it later. I've long lost my original account which a friend and I purchased back in 2010 and had a lot of fun with it. But I slowly forgot about the game until the trolling of "squeakers" was big around 2013-2014 and I got a kick out of those videos at the time. Never made me want to play again, until 2 summers ago, some buddies were playing and I got a bigly nostalgic urge to play again and have been playing on and off since then. So much had changed from when I originally started playing over a decade ago, but the core of the game is still there. That excitement to explore and expand, building bases all over the place, the excitement/addictiveness of spelunking, looking diamonds and other rare ores keeps you playing for far longer than you had planned to for the night. The combat still sucks imo and isn't all that fun, cheap deaths like when a creeper just spawns on top of you and blows you up, losing all your goods you've collected, leaving me cursing and ranting about how much I hate this fooking game! But still, I keep coming back to it. It really is a timeless classic and one of the best video games ever made. As for it being spooky, it sorta still is but back then it had more of an off putting vibe to it. Especially in the free browser version of the game. I still remember booting that up the first time and building a dirt cube house, in the middle of a lime green field with trees and dirt hills around me with that thick fog blocking out the further distance landscapes. It was creepy in a way, but the ability to create whatever I wanted was so much fun! Building has come such a long way from those day's too, it's wild that this game has lasted as long as it has and I am glad it stood the test of time and that people still enjoy it.

Exploring old freebuild servers that had one continuous map for many years (some maps are over 10 years old) and looking at what other players built many years ago is also an interesting and liminal experience. If you played there a long time ago you can return on these types of servers at any time and revisit the things you and other players have built there back then (this is assuming the server has griefing protections and is guarded accordingly, and the admins don't decide to remove the old map), frozen in time as an old memory. Currently the oldest freebuild server maps are like 12 to 13 years old, but imagine if a few decades in the future, maybe in 50 or 70 years, people will still be able to visit these old buildings on server maps that are still online. I have played on such a server that still has a freebuild map from 2011, I also built my first stuff there in 2013. Two active players on this server I play on have sadly passed away a few years ago. Their buildings are still on the server and heavily protected by the admins. Visiting these buildings of players that have passed away, knowing they can never change/complete them but that they will be preserved on the server and that their Minecraft buildings are still around long after they have passed away feels quite liminal and eerie.

I believe the reason we find Minecraft so nostalgic and eerie is because, well… Minecraft is sort of like life, in a way. The world is so vast and large that it would take years to traverse in its entirety - like traversing our Earth. You can be whoever you want and do whatever you want in Minecraft, just like you can be whoever you want to be and do whatever you want in real life (barring crime, of course). I feel personally that the reason the game is so nostalgic is because it almost mirrors our lives - we are so important and we can all make a huge impact on the world, and yet, we are still a small speck alongside hundreds of other mobs/people. Heck, when you play Hardcore mode, it almost is exactly like real life, with the caveat that you don’t die of old age. This is what I think, anyway - this was a wonderful video. It definitely helps capture the scale of Minecraft and your editing, as well as commentary, is very engaging.

To me the real fear is the "IF". What if when i turn a corner I'm going to see someone or something else. Well, of course that if never comes true, but that causes the tension to keep building. And since minecraft is not an horror game, there is no jumpscare to release the tension. It keeps building and building until you feel on edge and uneasy. This only happens to us old time players because we don't have that sense of discovery or curiosity that drives us to keep going. Well, of course different players have a different sense of exploration, but that is the difference: new players "discover" we instead "explore". A world bigger than our own, yet we feel like we have seen it all. To me its terrifying because every time i play minecraft i feel so damn empty and it doesn't make sense for such a vast and enjoyable game to make you feel like that. But that's only for some people. The vastness of the minecraft world for some people like me is a prison and a source of loneliness, yet for some people its a source of comfort and, in some kind of way, fulfillment. You don't have to try and make your mark on the world, there isn't someone else to judge you and how you play. Its just you and your imagination. And it sucks because i want to enjoy minecraft like that again but i cant anymore.

my little brother and i had a world together. we were planning on doing so much with it, but he died recently before we could. going back into that world, i can barely stomach it for 10 minutes at a time. the loneliness and seeing the things he won't be able to complete makes me very upset.

I have this weird thing where if I’m playing Minecraft I need to be talking to someone irl or on call. Otherwise I’m so uncomfortable that I can’t play it without my paranoia seeping into my mind, I never understood why but this video shined so much light onto it for me.

suddenly i remebered a world of minecraft i used to be invested a lot, it was snowy and i liked it a lot, but my favorite part was a cavern that looked like a throne or a ballroom, circular and with an decent opening that faced the sky. I began to build around it thinking how it would look full of people, how funny i would have been to show it to others, how it would develop, but it stayed the same, empty , as all of my worlds

Something I've noticed in myself is how I feel drawn to ways of playing Minecraft that enhances that loneliness and emptiness in different ways. Hardcore and ultra hardcore are favorite game modes of mine, and modpacks like Crash Landing (1.6.4), Regrowth (1.7.10), and Blightfall (1.7.10) are some of my all time favorite modpacks, and the common thread between them is that the world is dead (or covered in magic blight), and it is up to you to survive and thrive under the circumstances. I also always crave servers with friends, but they never last long enough, and I never get to properly use and exploit the mods I find so fascinsting in a multiplayer ejgironment, leaving it feel a bit hollow.

I like it. It’s a soft, comfortable silence where just I mold everything to how I want, no influence from anyone. I love the occasional music, the main lack of background sound, the sense of knowing you are alone in the world. It’s a comforting place to me. Often after stressful times I find myself being drawn into the game for weeks or months. I like that peaceful time with just myself

i am pretty young and Minecraft was one of the first games i really plaid so wen i here that music it brings me back i just feel sum thing, a overwhelming feeling i cant explain, its not joy its not sadness its just their a almost like a emptiness in you that you just cant explain. Some of the music can shift your mood completely when you are playing the game, you can go from happy to feeling empty and alone in seconds. Only because of the music.

I’ve found that I keep coming back to this game, starting a world, forgetting about it and then returning again. I think the reason why I forget it so easily is because I play it primarily by myself. But when I see KZbinrs play in worlds for YEARS, I wish I was able to do the same but I can’t because I don’t have a huge following or group of friends that play it with me, that I can share my experiences with. Back when I first played it, I did so with my family so it’s like real life, remembering playing games with my sister as a child and now we’re older and don’t so it will never be the same. (Sorry if that’s a bit sad, I guess Minecraft just makes me feel that way lol)

Lost of direction That's how it feels after long hours of minecraft. There's so much to do yet so little, that's why some mods have quests for progression or challenges. Because when you have done all you know there is to do, the canvas is still not filled. There is still space but what do you fill it with? It essentially makes you run out of ideas. And at the end of it, you feel lost. This is more apparent in singleplayer since with human interaction there will be some form of unexpected shenanigans that can hold you for a while. But in singleplayer there is no distraction to what's true in front of you. You've walked so far, yet so little. Like it all doesn't matter at all

For me the feeling of loneliness that I used to get in the past is mostly fixed by just one very simple and small mod, the one that adds ambient sounds, just hearing for example birds chirping when walking in the forest at night makes it so much more lively. I really hope that minecraft will one day get true ambient sounds built into the game itself.
