Why Is No One Buying Modern Swedish Fighter Jets?

The Swedish JAS 39 Gripen-E fighter jet has faced challenges in securing export deals despite its impressive attributes. The Gripen falls into the category of a very light fighter, positioned below standard lightweights like the F-16 or Rafale.

Brazil, South Africa, Hungary, Czechia, Thailand, Empire Test school(RAF)? Looks like a pretty good record to me for someone who is not the USA or Russia. It’s done better in the export market than the hornet or EF typhoon, and Brazil even got a licensing deal for the E/F variants. I’d say it’s done pretty good compared to the Viggen and Draken Edit: looks like I’ve started quite the argument. I’m just saying the Gripen has in fact sold alright and 6-7 operators isn’t bad. Obviously it hasn’t sold like the mig-29, f-16 or f-35. It just wasn’t a complete flop. People are buying the gripen, just if you’re friends with the US the f16 or f35 is a better deal in most cases, and if you’re not then no E/F model for you, so they bought rafales or sukhois.

None of those countries you mentioned are global military powers. Yes they have Gripens but nobody is gonna attack them anytime soon. Egypt has 100s of F-16s in their inventory. Same with Israel! @@IAMJEFFREY-cw9ns true, but is Sweden a global power? Sweden isn’t the USA, it isn’t Russia/the USSR, it isn’t China. Everybody buys f16s because the usaf buys f16s. Everybody bought mig 21 because the ussr bought mig 21. Sweden sold the draken to 3 small air forces. No one bought the viggen. More than 2 thirds of gripen a have sold internationally. For any country that exports a jet, that’s amazing. Especially if you’ve never sold a combat jet outside of Europe. Sweden isn’t a huge military power, so it’s testament to SAAB that Sweden even has their own jet.

@rocketassistedgoat1079
@rocketassistedgoat1079 2 ай бұрын
@@yxmichaelxyyxmichaelxy3074 Ubiquitousness would be the main one-they're everywhere, so you can get very good deals on them. My country, NZ for example; controversially turned down a very good offer on F-16s from the US. The truth is, I don't think we can afford an airforce. As an island, you'd want long range strike aircraft anyway which we definately can't afford. A focus on the navy, army, intelligence gathering and special forces I think is good for us. Anyway, everyone seems to agree: Gripen's superb for the price. It's other main competitor of course-IF you're allowed to buy them, is F-35: which dominates everything not called F-22 so is an air-superiority fighter as well as being able to lift F-111 sized loads, as well as being fifth-gen and all aspect stealth. Price for that, is now close to the promised 80 million too. Finally, Rafale is generally accepted as the best of this generation of aircraft, so sales reflect that-I don't believe that's simply marketing. Gripen is a budget product with premier-but limited capabilities. It's simply limited by cost, in a market that's only buying the upper level product. In the long run, that might change. Gripen is a short-range defensive fighter, so is ideal for a country like Ukraine. Better than F-16 even, as that thing is like a dragcar strapped to a glass-cannon, requiring long clean runways-that intake ingests everything. Gripen was designed for a war with Russia, on Russia's doorstep.

The real issue is if the Gripen could just generate a few more sales, then the per unit cost could come down. In some ways, the issue is much the same for the high priced Eurofighter. Spain, Germany, UK cut back huge on their original order commitments. As a result, the per unit price of the Eurofighter stayed around 115-120 per copy. In effect, by UK, Germany, Spain etc. cutting back on their orginal orders? Well, that then kept the per unit price very high, and that quite much killed their export options. The Gripen is priced at 85 million per unit. However, the F35 is priced at 77.8 million. And that low F35 price is ONLY due to large sales numbers. At one time, the F35 cost 200 million per unit. However, competitors to the F35 did not start their 5+ gen projects. Had they such products for sale, then the per unit price of the F35 would still be say around 160 million each. But, with Lockheed racking up such huge sales numbers, then the per unit cost drops. In many ways, the F35 is following the success of the F16. A lower cost single engine fighter. Most nations can't afford a high end priced Eurofighter or F15 at 120 million each. So, they tend to buy the lower priced single engine fighters like say a F16, or now the F35. And another great single engine fighter? Why of course the Gripen 39. However, with the Gripen being priced higher then the F35, then it becomes difficult to sell the Gripen at a higher price. And without more sales, then they can't get the per unit price down. This is kind of a chicken and egg type of problem. Intel can blow 2 billion on a computer chip. If they sell 2, then they are 1 billion each. But, intel sells them at $200 each, and they take boatloads of money to the bank. So, all the Gripen needs is some more orders, and they could drop the price a wee bit, and that would then create even more sales.....

The F-16 offer was out early on and that leave Su-30MK and Gripen. The reason we chose Gripen was it is capable enough to defend Thai airspace, but Su-30MK can do so as well (with modification to be armed with NATO munitions) plus the capability to effectively maintain air superiority, however Su-30MK is more expensive to operate and the later capability is overkill to what we aimed for, plus as a nation that using primarily NATO equipment, Gripen is much more economic and logistical friendly.

The air-to-air missiles on the Gripen E include infrared-guided short range IRIS-T missile, and the Meteor missile, which is a beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM). The aircraft also has the flexibility to be fitted with Sidewinder and A-Darter missiles to replace the IRIS-T, and the Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) missile to replace the Meteor. It can further be fitted with long range weapons such as R-Darter and Derby, and short-range weapons such as ASRAAM and Python. The Gripen E can also be integrated with a number of air-to-surface weapons including unguided Mk82, Mk83 and Mk84 bombs, laser-guided bombs such as GBU-12, GBU-16 and GBU-10, and advanced bombs such as GBU-49 and GBU-39. Air-to-surface missiles such as RBS15F ER, TAURUS KEPD 350, AGM-65 Maverick, and MBDA’s dual-mode Brimstone (DMB) can also be integrated into the Gripen E. The E-series has a new and more powerful engine, improved range performance and the ability to carry greater payloads. It also has a new AESA-radar, InfraRed Search and Track system, highly advanced electronic warfare and communication systems together with superior situational awareness. It has the lowest RCS of any non-stealth aircraft too, and the record Gripens hold in red flag training ops has been incredible.

I seriously think Canada should invest into a small order of theses. For closer range fighters. Their small size and rough landing ability would/could be useful. Our aging f18s are looking at upgrades and we have F35s on order. But I think these would fit nicely for Canada's needs.
@AdonNighbor
@AdonNighbor Ай бұрын
I disagree but you do got some points it would give Canada a high low mix with a capable 5 generation and a very reliable 4.5 generation aircraft but in my opinion, I think Canada should be focussing more on keeping its Air Force extremely competitive with its enemies and promoting local production which Canada does produce some F35 parts in the country and has been a partner in the F35 program for a while.
@TheInsomniaddict

Gripens make a lot of sense for Canada. Huge landmass, not a lot of military budget. F35s are just too costly and Gripens have flown for decades in climates similar to our own. Besides, if Canada does get attacked the US will be there with F35s. Get a couple for training crews to service and flight training, sure, but make the Gripen the backbone of our native force. Also, if we do make a deal with Sweden we may be able to produce natively, which would be an all-around win for us.

@TheInsomniaddict Ай бұрын
@@AdonNighbor Yeah, and it's a lot less likely we'll ever see a native CF-35. US is right there and with it being higher tech, the US is less likely to allow foreign production. I think distance alone would make Saab more willing to allow production in Canada. Canada doesn't really need a few excellent multi-role fighters, outside of possibly NATO/UN missions. However even in those roles outside of possible war with Russia/China, the Gripen would be capable enough to fulfill our duties. And if we do ever go to war with Russia and China, we should be just as worried about protecting and patrolling our own borders. Gripens would mean more birds in the air which would help with detection and deterrence.

I find very interesting that the person who made the video considers the Rafale a light fighter, eve thou it is a very big twin engine multi-role fighter like the Eurofighter Typhoon. Also the Gripen E/F payload capacity is 7200 kg (15900 lbs) , and the F-16 ranges between 6294.72 kg (15200 lbs) to 7700 kg (16975.59 lbs), depending on the specific version/block. Have about the same size and weight, the only thing they differ substantially is the internal fuel capacity, that the F-16 have more than 1,5 times the fuel capacity of the Gripen. So how is the Gripen significantly less capable than the F-16, if it is the same size, weight, and carries about the same overal payload weight, carrying more than some versions and less than other versions?

It not being widely adopted has nothing to do with how good of a plane they built and if you consider how small their country is and how good the plane is they deserve that much more credit. @@rayjynx it's very difficult to be honest to manufacture an indigenous engine, problem is the lack of exotic materials which can withstand that much heat once the full thrust is engaged that is where most engine fails. The SU-75 is a good example the main reason it can't be a good stealth based fighter is because it had to make do with a different engine where as looking at aircraft such a F22 , F35 and B1 they have managed both speed and stealth at the same time all because of how it managed to hide the engines. I have full hope on the stealth capability of Tejas but that engine problem has been persisting for so long, no one would like to have the Mig-21 scenario again. But until the technology is perfected it will also be great to have some foreign based aircraft see at the end of the day it's the pilot who is the in charge in the combat and not the machine. I don't know much about AMCA honestly but the conceptual art is badass , one makes it look like a vampire bat and I think it has an EW capable nosemount as well and one is the downward parabolic wing one which looks much closer to the F22 but with curved wings.

Grippen is an extremely smart design, in time of conflict in Europe it will be so much more useful then i.e. F-16. Grippen can land and take off at any strip of reasonably straight 1km road, the service crew is 5 men, who can be very mobile and hide in the forests, which means the aircraft can operate even when air base is damaged. Refueling takes 15 minutes. I am frankly very surprised that country like Poland did not go for larger number of Grippens over F-16 (which need clean runway to take off) or even F-35, it would have made so much more sense for them in case of conflict with Russia, who is the only threat.
