I built a Marvo deck to play with my friend group. Fair warning it's a very easy deck to become the villain with. Once you land the clash a couple times, everyone starts looking at you different

this is exactly what happend to our table. The "fun/mystery" of the Clash mechanic is over cuz the Marvo deck always wins the clash with top-deck manipulation, and the 8-drops they are casting are game-warping Toxrills or jin gitaxias or Breach the Multiverse. When you cash 8 drops for free in Blue, you can to hold up counter spells w that mana you didnt use, so you lock everyone out of the game. So yea.. its a "cheat big mana/control deck", which will make you arch enemy real quick.

@stephenandolino its the same issue with other powerful cards. Theyre only as broken as you make them. I play some of those toxic cards (as every deck does), but not overwhelmingly, i dont use any tutors (outside of sensei's top, i only use a certain amount of manipulation), and counterspells are more for my own protection rather than preventing my opponents from playing. Ive never made salt levels rise, and ive won every game i played with him. You can control the attention and aggro that you get.

Myojin copying Auton soldier 3 times is one of the most obscene things I've ever done in this game. 4 Auton soldiers as copies of Marvo. Each combat I get 5 clashes and every clash I win draws 13 and plays 13 spells for free that cost 8 or less since the 4 autons make 2 myriad copies each, totalling 13 Marvos that see the clash win during combat.

I don't run Marvo, because I am trying to steer away from decks that just... turn off when my Commander gets killed. Play him a couple times among the same people - and they learn pretty quickly to not let him survive a rotation. It becomes a matter of you either popping off and putting the game in a chokehold... or not getting to do your thing at all. It escalates so quickly if it's left alone, there's not really much in between. Nikya was my first non-precon Commander; I know these kinds of games intimately, and I find it more fulfilling when I can keep chugging even without my Commander.
@vexhia67925 ай бұрын
I know this is cliche but try playing some generic removal, especially mass-removal, instead of some of your biggest threats with Marvo. It makes people more comfortable when they see you setting up, and yes your deck will be nerfed without Marvo around, but you can use the removal when Marvo is gone to stop opponents from getting ahead while you play lands to cast Marvo again.
@Buffalo935 ай бұрын
Try playing against similar decks, it should get easier once every commander on the board is a threat.

I built Marvo about a month ago because I wanted a commander that not many people have encountered, and I wanted a deck that could pump out big stuff. He goes HARD if you get him going. Especially with cloning abilities. You can draw and play 20+ cards a turn with stacking Marvo triggers, it's ridiculous. But if he gets removed from the field it can be a real slog and difficult to pick up pace again. Also, You can replace the taking players turns cards with extra turns and just close out games quickly. I love this octopus and it has become one of my favorite decks. Thanks for the video, I'm so glad others are bringing him some much needed attention!

For a while I've been trying to coalesce upon a set of each two color pair for commander decks that are fun, mechanically interesting, and approachable for new players and new to my group players to be able to borrow and play whenever the time is right. Dimir has been a struggle in this endeavor, but I think this style of list hits the sweet spot. It showcases Dimir as a crafty, not conventionally 'fair' color pair, without defaulting to a hard control deck or a zombies list that is demonstrably better than the rest of my guildpact just due to density. I look forward to putting a little personal identity into your list and testing it with my groups.

Over-saturation and because it’s 5 mana in Dimir with an attack trigger. If you lose your commander before you get your attack trigger off, that’s a whopping 7 mana you gotta pay to get him back AND he’s gotta survive again.

@Thoughtmage1004 ай бұрын
I don't have a list up anywhere, but I can steer you in the right direction since I do have an amped up Marvo deck. You want to run a lot of cards that help manipulate the top of your deck like Sensei's Divining Top, Jace the Mind Sculptor, Scroll Rack, Lantern of Insight, Volrath's Stronghold, and Haunted Crossroads. After that, you can also benefit greatly from running several cedh staples like Force of Will and Deadly Rollick since you typically cast those cards for free, but have decent mana costs to Clash into. My personal favorite end goal is to find my Rune-Scarred Demon, which tutors Thassa, Deep-Dwelling, so I can continuously loop Nexus of Fate and deny any more turns to my opponents.
@Wicknology7 ай бұрын
I know that I would not play it because every time you walk up to a table with a commander that lets you play expensive spells for free, It's pretty hard to fly under the radar. It just means people are going to Target you immediately. Aunt either kill your commander on site or try to kill you

Is there a possible chance that there is also a Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign Commander decklist in making? Some cards on the decklist are quite similar.
@xaropevic79187 ай бұрын
I personally hate 1 mana discard spells for 2 reasons in commander: 1) Why I hate them in general, when they are casted, if you are on the draw, you can't interact AT ALL with them. I like counterspells because you can work around those, mainly by either fighting on the stack, using an "uncounterable" card or most often, baiting them, and the player need to have the right amount of mana at the right time, so requires more investment 2) The spell straight up sucks because you target only 1 player in commander lol

@H4NN4BLESL4YER6 ай бұрын
I built marvo , he's strong but has some really big flaws . First , he's 5 cmc and needs to attack . So you not doing anything til he comes out , turn 3-6 depending on your ramp . . Than you want protection cause he's a monolith. Someone removes him your decks in a terrible spot . Than your focus is split between weak cantrips or top deck manipulation that doesn't help you win without marvo . Or with 6-8 cmc spells that you don't want to be Hardcasting. All in all , a little slow, and a glass cannon

“If you cast your 500th counterspell and ruin somebody’s day it gets a little bit old.” My man, blue players don’t feel this way at all. Why do you think I love blue? It’s because I get to tell other players no. I get to unilaterally decide what resolves in a game if I have mana + multiple counterspells. Nothing is better than telling your friend “nah bro, imma counter that” and then watching the joy fade from their face as they see you show your Force of Will (being tapped out so they think they’re safe to cast stuff makes the schadenfreude even better). I will never get bored of countering other people’s shit. I’ve cast Force of Will probably 500 times; I look forward to the next 500 with glee!

@poolice18084 ай бұрын
I agree with you that playing cards like Toxrill and Jin Gitaxias will put some ire on you, however from my experience I think there are enough lesser threats in Dimir that - while strong - will put you under the "arch-enemy radar". In the end it will probably also depend on the competetiveness of your pod and what they expect your deck to do, but in my local meta cards like Mindleech Mass, Brinelin and Wrexial are usually powerful enough to put me in an advantageous position without locking the other players out of the game, resulting in a fun game for everyone at the table. Regarding the counterspells, this is blue, there's gonna be some counterspells (unfortunately, don't really like playing those). The best solution I found is which counterspell you put into your deck. Sure you can play actual Counterspell and Mana Drain and whatnot, but there are actually a few interesting cards you can slot instead, like Broken Ambitions, Scattering Stroke and Counterpoint. While these cards do cost a lot more mana, in this deck it can actually be a good thing, gives you a better chance of winning clashes. And hey, Ambition and Stroke even clash themselves! ^^

I always cringe when, some of the MTG youtubers who obviously know game very well, focus mostly on what absurd combo deck can deck theoretically execute, while ignoring more mundane issues. As many people mentioned this is monolithic commander with 5 CMC, which unless we have more clash cards in hand, will only trigger in the next turn after being casted. To make this work, a good amount of recursion and counter spells needs to be included, which unfortunately will be very cheap and will hinder decks game plan, even more than they would in any other deck. It would be also good to have more than 15 life once commander is in play, which may be difficult, without cheaper blockers to play. Even though the mechanic is interesting, I'm afraid that this will be another deck which will do nothing for 6-7 turns and either win in explosive way or be eliminated after that.
@Buffalo935 ай бұрын
After some testing, I realized that clash just isn't that good. On paper, our deck is much better than any other in winning the clash, but in reality, still usually half of the deck will consist of lands and low mana value cards, so it's very likely that many swings with commander won't add any value. Also Auton Soldier isn't instant win like almost shown here, as you can just hit land, which will stay on top of the deck for both clashes - still great combo, but it's good to take into account how many clashes will be lost.
