I work for an ISP and take bill payments. I shit you not, I look out for every account that has Netflix/Disney Plus/Apple Music and make sure to let the customer know that they are paying for it. 9/10 times they had NOO clue that they were paying for it. Iv helped dozens of people cancel their stupid subscriptions. I have literally seen agents sell someone a new phone. And in the contract since they might not speak good english, they will slip in a subscription service and people will end up paying monthly for 2 subscriptions to the same service. Fuck anyone who allows this to happen. I know its not much but at least I can feel good at the end of the day knowing I fucked over a big corporation by undoing their sneaky backhanded shit.

Why is no one talking about this? Cause its a non issue, a mistake was made and Twitch has come out offering to pay to compensate for the loss, plus have reached out to those affected both streamers and viewers so people are aware they need to resubscribe if they want. See i think if you'd unsubscribe to a service and not realise you're unsubscribed, it's a good thing that they're no longer paying for that service, it sucks for a super minority of people who care about streaks but not about watching the actual content, and if someone purely cares about giving money to people online they could donate or subscribe to a higher tier, but for most people its good that they are no longer paying for something they dont use, that's something YOUR OWN SPONSOR advocates for

While I do agree for the most part, I think the issue is more on how it is due to a fuckup that involuntarily affects people (unlike RM that prompts you to potentially make that choice yourself) and the fact that subs are a mostly predictable/stable cashflow for a lot of streamers who do it as a main livelihood, meaning that this now leaves those affected in an odd spot where a chunk of their predicted paycheck may have been unexpectedly cut out of nowhere more than couldve been originally anticipated/properly budgeted for which, for all intents and purposes regardless of the benefits you stated for the unconcerned casual consumer, is pretty unfair on their end.

I think that’s a little unfair. If you want to support a streamer you like, you should be able to do it in whatever way is most convenient to you. If you only have so much disposable income but want to support, lowest tier is perfectly fine. I don’t see why you need to be an active viewer to do so. It’s bad design to make a subscription that asks you “are you sure you want this?” That kind of thing should be up to the user, third parties like rocket money, or the government to deal with.

Super hard disagree on the stance that Twitch should pay out streamers for the whole year. I'm all for big companies taking Ls whenever possible, but at this point if people don't resub (because they don't notice, I assume), then it's because they're not watching. And if they're not watching, then why the heck would streamers still dare to ask for the subs regardless? I thought shame was still a thing.

I think your opinion on this is alot different as a streamer than a consumer. Naturally, when people forget about a service but still pay for it, its really good for the business, but not so good for the consumer. So when the business messes up like this. It benefits some of the fans. Its really good, and theyre doing what they can, they dont have to pay 1 month bonus. It feels alot like "im losing out on money because people arent resubbing to my service. Listen I.. I'm normally a Ludbud yes-woman but.. this take is cold and also incredibly funny with the sponsorship. Twitch may have saved the everyday layman who works a 9 to 5 from losing money every month on a dead sub without having to pay for a Rockey Money service to do it for them. Active subs will re-sub, and there wasn't much more Twitch really could do. They shouldn't give money to make up for streamers taking advantage of everyday people who don't realize they're sinking money into someone they don't actively watch anymore. It comes off as streamer with big money defending streamer with big money while making money off consumers struggling during an economic low.

No one's talking about it because charging for dead subscriptions is already heavily discouraged in Europe and the rest of the world. Microsoft will automatically cancel Game Pass subs if it's not being used as well. This video was poorly researched and no one's talking about because it's something government consumer agencies recommend.

This situation is only possible *because* Twitch is still behaving in a predatory way and letting subscriptions continue indefinitely even if they're unused. Twitch didn't do what you're saying they did. The payment provider is who cancelled the subscriptions, not Twitch. Twitch legally can't reactivate it without the user's consent. This has nothing to do with Twitch cancelling unused subs like your Microsoft example. If this issue didn't occur, Twitch could have continued to leech off of them.

I am confused, Xsolla fucked up but this is somehow Twitch's fault? If people were unsubbed due to a glitch I dont think it would be legal for twitch to just resub everyone and continue to take payments when they cannot 100% gurarantee the glitch was the cause, there is a small chance people may have just cancelled their subs around the same time. Now even though this was an Xsolla fuck up I think twitch giving streamers 1 months payout for any sub lost during this time is a fair compromise, it gives a full month to hopefully let people know they may need to resub. If they are a long time viewer/subscriber they will most likely catch on, just put out reminders during streams. If they no longer watch then its probably not a bad thing for the viewer who may have forgotton they are still subbed and continued to pay despite not watching anymore, how many of these longtime subscribers are only 'longtime' due to forgotton subscriptions? Hopefully streamers manage to get the word out and regain the majority of the lost subs though!! Just my 2 cents on the matter, I will go back to the shadows now. TLDR: Twitch didnt fuck up Xsolla did. IMO Twitch is doing the best they can, even going as far as just giving streamers money. Most loyal subs will resubscribe quickly.

It's interesting how this video is entirely framed from the perspective of a streamer losing an auto-renewed sub, and is hilariously sponsored by an app that cancels said unused subscriptions... If this person is continuously paying for a subscription that they apparently don't even notice when they lose it, should you really feel entitled to their money? If they do notice, and they choose to resubscribe they can do so and still keep their streak, so where is the issue?

One of the rare takes I disagree with, they are also already losing money from the lost subs, as you said it added up to millions in lost revenue for them. This sucks for the streamers but it’s not like twitch isn’t also a victim here. Now for an actual proactive solution that isn’t just giving them a new multi-million dollar bill, they should just reduce the cost of subs for affected streamers for a few months (within reason), take a reduced cut themselves, and give the streamers their full cut.

If Twitch or streaming is the only thing you can do to put food on the table and a roof over your head........Well sorry about your luck chief. Streaming is a luxury job done on a voluntary base. What's the problem here? If people don't re-subscribe, then they might have forgotten they were subbed, or this may have been a moment for them to re-think the subscription. All the streamers have to do is ask their viewers to re-sub, or check their emails if they aren't subbed. Anyone that actually watches that content will then re-sub. That email telling viewers they were unsubbed is more than enough; this is honestly just a bad take. Imagine the gym cancels all memberships by accident. You wouldn't want them to restart your membership without your permission. That would mean they have access to do with your payment options whatever they want. Instead, send an email or mail out to all members. Those that go to the gym will restart the membership. Some people will realize they were subscribed and decided not to re-subscribe, saving them money. The gym being paid back a months worth of revenue is already very generous.

This sounds like what the sponsor would do for us. I don’t see how this a “scam” twitch paying for a month I think is fairly justified. Yes it’s a glitch and yes they should maybe take a bit more responsibility for this issue, but if you forgot you were subbed to someone this may have just saved you. Just like how the sponsor saved you from the double subscription. Subscription models prey off those who forget about their commitment to pay. And this was just a happy glitch that may have saved those who were preyed upon.

If a sub doesn't notice that his subscription got cancelled, he probably wasn't watching the streamer and possibly even forgot about it and would have unsubbed if he remembered. I don't think it's good to profit off of people who just never thought to cancel their subscriptions, and the people who do still watch the stream can just resubscribe. It's a moral grey area at best, anticonsumer and predatory at worst.

I'm not sure this is as big an issue as you present. While it is unprecedented for Twitch to unsub people for seemingly no reason, there is a lot more at play. What if many of those who were unsubbed did not know they were still subscribed on an auto-renew? Surely any viewer that is part of the long term subscriber base would recognize this. Even myself, as a long time viewer of many channels have noticed within days when things have changed. I cannot imagine those being impacted are regular viewers. IMO, they are likely people who simply do not check their monthly subscriptions.

I mean, like yeah they should be able to notify the people that got unsubbed to let them know what happened, it would be best if a pop up appeared next time they went into twitch telling them exactly what happened, but I don't really see how this is a scam? Like you said, they can't auto resubscribe people, even ignoring how that would be an EXTREMELY shady, predatory thing to do, it could open them up to a lawsuit. And let's be honest here, saying that streamers may lose money going forward is extremely disingenuous. If Twitch's plan goes correctly, people that want to resub will resub, and people that forgot they were subbed for a long time will now no longer be victims of a system that is kinda predatory to begin with. Hell, the sponsor of THIS VIDEO is built on stopping people draining their bank accounts through poor management of subscriptions. If this is truly going to be a long term problem you have to consider whether the majority of these people are long term subs that are financially sound and aware of how much they're spending, or they're people who have no idea, or would be better off not paying for this. I'm not sure what the breakdown is there, but no one else can know for sure either. So all in all this seems like the perfect response from Twitch.

Its 100% illegal for Twitch to automatically resub people. I dont believe that they would even have the ability to do that (from what I know about credit card encryption) If people dont resub, thats lost revenue, but I mean, if the viewer doesnt even notice, thats kinda not really a moral crisis. I think ultimately this shouldn't matter at all. As someone pointed out in the comments already, if someone is an active watcher of a streamer, or the streamer makes good enough content to subscribe to, then people will resubscribe. This video comes across as though streamers are preying on the viewers who subscribe to a streamer, stop watching them (or stop watching twitch frequently in general) and then forget that they're paying 5 bucks a month to the streamer. I understand that the sponsor of the video counteracts that message, but that doesnt change the message you've conveyed in the video.

I completely understand the effect this would have on streamers due to the potential loss in revenue but, as most of the comments already mentioned, there's also the potential loss of income for normal people who are unaware or forgot their subscriptions which the sponsor itself ironically warns about. I think this is overall positive since not only does it help those unaware subscribers, it also gives a wake up call to existing subscribers where it's basically saying "if you don't care enough to resub, then they're probably not worth your money." It'll save a lot of money for those type of people that again is what the sponsor is advocating for. It won't really affect those actual subscribers who do so in good faith to actually support their favorite streamers. For the people who passively support as some of the comments mention (i.e. subscribed but don't really watch much of their content, but stay subscribed because they want to keep supporting anyways), it kind of sucks and maybe someone at Twitch decides to do something about it but I don't think the amount of people like this is huge anyways. I don't think it's that big of an issue.

If people have forgotten they're subbed then them saving money is a good thing and it probably means they are no longer an active viewer. Everyone else will find out rather quickly they're unsubbed, and it'll give them a chance to catch their breath and decide if they want to resubscribe (I see how the barrier to entry can be frustrating to streamers as its easier to keep a sub going passively than actively). It's good you're spreading awareness this happened so the people effected can then make an informed decision, but the take is odd.

Lud kind of a bad take this time. Twitch is paying out the money that is owed. Yes people will not regain all of the lost subs, but you have to understand technological errors occur all the time - to even the biggest of tech companies. It is not within their power (for good reason reason) to re-instate a payment subscription without authorization from the purchaser. So in my opinion they handled this best way they could, and in the long run the people who your sponsor advocates for are benefitting for the good. Twitch streamers are not entitled to their viewers money at all unless they gave them something actually worth 5 dollars the free viewers don’t get, it’s just tip culture online. TLDR: Bad take, twitch just had a really really shitty situation from likely a single error out of their control, and did their best to handle it.

I feel like twitch have done basically all they (legally) can do? A month payout for streamers effected, notifying every person who got unsubscribed and encouraging them to resubscribe, as they can't do that for them and creating a bonus incentive to get people to continue their streaks rather than giving up. Within the 400-500 max number of people that have been unsubscribed in the example, you would hope majority of them tune in enough to notice their benefits have gone and they have 8 ads when they click on the stream. Those who don't notice, weren't watching and if that's majority effected, then your channel has a lot of dead subs? Idk it's a fuckup for sure, but glitches can fuck things up to a level where they can't get back to where they were and you have to find ways around it. It might even have to come to the streamers personally reporting the losses and going after Xsolla themselves. Idk I'm a Twitch noob tho, just my two cents from a viewer.
