I have a small business. It's on etsy, but almost all of my advertising is done on tiktok. No other platform gets eyes on people's art the way tiktok does. Im pretty bummed that things for me are ending just as it started to get going. Its upsetting that so many small businesses are going to be affected by this.

The way some people are laughing at TikTok creators over this ban is disgusting. Telling creators to get 9-5 jobs?? Aren't these the same people complaining about how their 9-5 jobs aren't paying them enough? Or how these jobs will replace them at the drop of a hat? Never promote them? It's bitter jealousy in my opinion. They never got their time in the sun so they're happy that creators are being knocked back down to their level. When we have TikTok, an incredible resource for making a living for yourself and getting out of the "rat race", people don't cherish it.

Even if the attention was there (which I think it was when the app passed), the internet just cannot hold the attention onto these things for more than a few days or weeks given how algorithm driven everything is. Plus the delay that comes with the implementation of any laws means that it would have been forgotten about anyway. However, I also think that a lot of people were under the impression that a protracted legal fight would have provided some form of survival for tiktok. A lot of artists learned this lesson with twitter and instagram and their algorithm tweaks. DO NOT PUT EVERYTHING ONTO ONE PLATFORM. The platform can go away just as fast as it came or the platform can be changed into something that is effectively unusable. Have a website at the very least to redirect your following should any platform go down.

I’m not gonna lie, I don’t really care about TikTok whatsoever but my sympathy goes out to the people who are using it to help report on the wars in Ukraine and Palestine / alongside small businesses. But it has helped set a trend of short form running videos with an algorithm to get people addicted to spending more time on their phone, which I hate and had just brain rotted the folks only a few years younger than me. Social media is just the worst, I’m glad I just watch KZbin and stay on some small discords that feel like the forums I experienced just as they died in the very early 2010s.

As a Russian (no I don't support war) I guarantee there's A LOT of ways to bypass bans from the government. I recommend looking at tiktok mods (for android) and vpns. But obviously be careful not to infect your phone/pc with a virus. (just options for the worst case scenario)

There's always a workaround with these things, that's why it's not really a concern. only concern will be if there is actually a law to be enforced, say, you can't be a US citizen and show your face on TikTok because you will be legally pursued.

One thing that I noticed but was overshadowed- there are only so many jobs available, with tiktokers on a job hunt, american job market might get even more cruel. The "it's fine if you sell the company" clause should make it very obvious to everyone what the actual goal of the ban is: seizing the profits made by the bytedance. The fact that it also allows people to report on atrocity is probably another reason Epic games store, for example, also mines your data. Yeah, nobody forgot. It's simply not that big of a deal. And if you're still asking this now, then you're simply not someone who pays attention to politics. Everything in this country blows up when it hits the headlines and then eventually trickles down and fades to nothing because media headlines are short-term outrage articles. If you're using social media as a distraction from reality, then you're one of the many unsolved social issues in this nation. Learn to socialize in the real world and create physical communities, and you'll be fine, just like we literally all were before facebook was ever a thing. We survived before TikTok, and we'll survive without it. This isn't that big of a deal. The fact that we're acting like people on tiktok can't switch to one of the other 3+ social media platforms is wild. Lastly, what evidence is needed to justify the ban? The company is undeniably linked to the communist china government, and we are actively competing for economic power and independence from China. Literally pay attention to what happened when NBA players tried to speak up against China and you'll never need to understand why an american govt doesnt want a social media platform with direct connections to China's govt involved in our nation's social environment. And again, this doesn't require an explanation if you've been paying attention to foreign influence from china over the last 10+ years.
