Why Is Our Boat Listing??

Determining why our boat was listing to the port side and I was happy to confirm that it was as a result of the starboard side fuel tank having run lower from running the generator a lot, without completely topping off that tank. Now that it's done, everything has once again equalled out.
I mentioned starting the generator, but as of today, that video hasn't been edited yet. I'll update this here with a link once I've uploaded that video!

Mine holds 600 gallons through 2-300 gallon saddle tanks but the gender is on the port side as is a full size fridge, plus a freestanding freezer. On the starboard side is a 200 gallon water tank. When we are on the hook for very long it’ll start to list to the port until we refill the water tank! I might be the only that notices but it bugs me! This is part of my selling point to my wife for us to add a water maker!

Once we were again sitting on an even keel, I really noticed that our bed in the forward vee berth was no longer slanting to one side. Actually made it a lot more comfortable to sleep in! As for your water maker idea, if you're located on freshwater, perhaps a simpler - and less expensive - water filtration system is all you'd need?? With my diesels if I feed the starboard engine from the port tank the starboard engine returns fuel to the starboard tank, so it’s not only using up fuel from the port tank reducing weight on port, it’s adding it to starboard so correcting any inbalance even further. , and vice versa. Not the same for gas engines, but just for anyone watching who has diesels.

SeaRay does not have a fuel manifold system to balance the fuel between tanks? Our 2008 38’ Regal also has a mixing valve to pull generator fuel from either or both fuel tanks. My 2001 Doral 360 did as well.

Paul, We are Chesapeake Bay boaters thinking about the loop in a couple years. My boat search now includes Express cruisers because of your channel. Do you think you guys could be comfortable on your boat for the loop? The express cruiser would be perfect for the bay but I'm not sure about the loop, thanks.
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 2 ай бұрын
In the 20+ years that we've been cruising the Trent Severn Waterway and Georgian Bay, we've come to the realization that a good percentage of Loopers were folks that had either never had a boat before, or came from a runabout style boat. With little to no prior cruising experience, those folks tend to buy the very biggest boat they can, as they expect to need a virtual house on the water to be comfortable. Unfortunately, many if those same folks are clearly overwhelmed by the sheer size of those ships as the navigate through their journey. Those observations aside, our personal experience is that an express style boat, including the 370 Sundancer we now enjoy, would definitely be quite comfortable for us to do The Loop. In 2022, we were out for 5-1/2 weeks straight and the boat never gave us any issues insofar as comfort and the amenities we need ( Summer 2022 Cruise: kzbin.info/aero/PLKhjT5kr2l2FfZzzxZ5GiZynKbMQs21iZ ).

When we first bought our new-to-us 400 Sedan Bridge, I contacted both Sea Ray and Westerbeke to get their input on running the genny when underway. It was suggested that we should be good at any speed for that vessel - but please don't take my word for it. To get the full scoop, I would highly recommend that you contact a gentleman named Pete Anthony from Anthony Keats Marine ( anthonykeatsmarine.com/ ). He has been my go-to contact for nearly 15 years and he is most knowledgeable and helpful. Plus I always get my Westerbeke parts through him/them. Drop Pete a line and mention my name. He'd be happy to answer your concerns with anything Westerbeke, plus a lot more.

1.2 gph for the genny? Yikes, I'm happy to report that our diesel only sips 0.25 of diesel per hour at full load!
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 2 ай бұрын
The situation with the Westerbeke on our current (and last) boat is that it runs at a constant 3,600 RPM, irrespective of load. From what I was told by my Westerbeke guy is that it was some sort of attempt to reduce emissions??? Anyway, I'm sure that impacts the fuel burn overall. No worries, I just gotta be more aware of our generator use and account for that on subsequent fuel fill-ups ⛽

My 340 leans to the starboard side. I have tried adding more port fuel and that doesn't help. Water tank level doesn't affect it.
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 2 ай бұрын
If your 340 is like our 330 was, your freshwater tank should be at the very back of the aft cabin, running widthwise, so the level shouldn't affect how JetLag sits in the water. I guess the only way to eliminate the uneven fuel situation would be to top up both tanks with gas like I had to. I'll tell you that the bed is a lot more comfortable now that I don't feel like I'm gonna roll out. Yes, it was that noticeable...

@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 2 ай бұрын
Don't need it. Just gotta pay attention to my generator use more closely. As mentioned in the video, this situation was as a result of 12 days out on the genny, so that equalled roughly 30 (12 days x running twice/day for 2-3 hours per) hours of run time without fully fueling the starboard tank.

This ma be a stupid question coming from someone who only boats vicariously, but why aren't the port and starboard tanks connected so that fuel would automatically find a level?
@pokeygravityryder

If you end up with a contaminated tank, it’s nice to be able to switch both engines over to the good take and get yourself home. Could be water ingress or dirt etc.
@BoatingWithBoogaboo
@BoatingWithBoogaboo 2 ай бұрын
No stupid questions and I'm happy to help. Our boat is equipped with valves that allow for fuel to be drawn from one tank or the other. That's done in case one has contamination in one tank, or if one runs dry. That said, they would have to be manually switched over and wouldn't have helped in my situation. Best option is for me to just keep both tanks full 👍

No, never have,never will. Here's a video I produced that talks about it; kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5fOhJeher2Xfq8 This issue was as a result of running the generator multiple times, over an extended period of time. By my count, we used it on 12 different occasions, running roughly 4-5 hours each getaway - 2 hours evening, 2 hours the following morning. Here's what our typical getaway would look like kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4qyeYCsd5yYhs0si=odldEqLit9Yx5j_F Many more of those voyages on my channel!!
