It never ceases to amaze me how many people purchase a boat just because they can, but have no idea on how to operate it safely. Most people don’t bother to take any boater safety courses because they think they know it all. They think “HOW HARD CAN IT BE?” At my local lake yesterday I seen a guy almost rip his wife’s arm completely off when he threw it into reverse. She had the front tie line wrapped around her arm about four times, and he was coming in way too fast so he threw it in reverse and dragged her half way across the dock while almost ripping her shoulder out of her socket. Pulled her 10 feet across the dock and completely into the water. Make sure you’re absolutely comfortable with everything on any boat you’ll be operating. Take a boater operators safety course and practice, practice, practice. Go to a dock that’s not busy and keep practicing until you feel comfortable with launching and docking. Don’t try to become familiar with everything you need to know in one day. This has led to many people being severely injured and killed.

This is a good video to show any captain or boat operator class. What not to do when boating. Oh and another tip you could add to the overwhelming amount of tips, get some real dock lines. He is using sail line to tie off at the dock. Which is easy, until you have a stiff wind and chop working against the dock. That's when using sail lines will get sporty.

Worked in the STEM fields all my life and have always had a boat to play with. There's Two kinds of people who own Boats, those who can afford it and those who know the pointy end from the stern. You always seem to see someone in "over their heads" w/ a BFB (big fat boat) and those who make a day of logistics look easy. Boats take Much more maintenance and skill to operate Safely than most cars do. I required people to learn a couple basic knots, a Bowline and Half Hitch, and that they have a basic knowledge and feel for running the boat in fwd or reverse. Whoever had a Fish-On was in charge and if it was me I wanted people to be able to take the helm, trim the motor, lock in and start or disconnect the Trolling motor and if you could run a downrigger and/or the Depth sounder, that got you Extra Points. 🤗

This incompetence is the epitome of why you take a safety course. Good god this supposed captain is brain dead and is going to get everybody around them hurt or worse. Wowsers.

Just because a guy has a boat, doesn't make them a captain. I know it makes great content but if you're seen doing stupid shit, you should be made to take a boater safety and driving coarse.

I'm thinking new boater on a paupers budget that's why the boat looks like it's been used as a seagull/Pidgeon roost for a decade or two. The "mates" aren't exactly salty boaters either. Fun to watch tho. I could see that winch strap issue coming as soon as he hooked it with a "Full twist"! Ha ha.

The seal is likely gone on his bell crank. I've had this happen before, the shifting mechanism fills up with sediment making it extremely hard to select gears, you often over rev before it even goes into gear.
