Doesn’t really matter how tall you build, NYC and Hong Kong are still ridiculously expensive despite that. It’s mainly about policy and implementation, such as in Singapore

For me personally, Paris has been the worst disappointment of my life. A city where it is considered normal to live in a 19m^2 studio for more than €1000/mo, where everything is even more expensive than in the US, and a 40k/yr salary is considered “good”, is literally unliveable. Average people are displaced to the suburbs that are plagued by ghetto areas everywhere, where most of the population are african or muslim migrants (you don’t see many french people in there anymore) and there is little or no rule of law (remember Champions League final in St Denis?). Yeah, I forgot an important part, hygiene is not a particularity of Paris: Trash is literally everywhere, piss smell is ubiquitous as well as graffiti, and cigarette butts carpet the entire city. Go anywhere touristy like the Eiffel tower? Hard to walk a step without being harassed by agressive street vendors (mostly illegal migrants) that even sometimes insult you if you don’t give them money! The police? Nowhere to be seen. Ride the metro? Trains look like they haven’t been cleaned in decades and pickpockets will haunt you 24/7. Long story short guys, Paris is not what you see on Instagram. Maybe it was, before, but right now is sadly a city in decadence, where people live in awful standards. I personally come from a pretty low-average Latin American city so my standards were already quite low. Until I saw what Paris is really like!

I personally live in Paris and I am an international student here, I have to stay here for 3 years to finish my bachelors degree and I have some things to say about Paris as someone who works in tourism. First of all, it do is expensive, and extremely elitist. For example, opportunities in consulting firms or big managerial roles are mostly reserved for people who do “grand école” programs which usually cost much more than the usual university and need a special 2 year prep school to get into, so yes there are opportunities in Paris (I’m studying law myself and I would love to work in the ICC or the OECD which are based in Paris for example) but I also know the French are extremely elitist regarding their « grand écoles ». On the other hand, my university is “technically free” and I don’t have to pay anything for school since I’m studying in French :), so that’s a big plus. But it is true that most opportunities are “reserved” at least I feel like it, and so does a lot of people. Second of all, yes it’s expensive, but there are ways around it, especially if you’re a student and if you’re under 26, for example; I usually don’t spend more than 3€ a day on food and meals since I eat in the student restaurants and there the food is subsidized by taxes, I get a whole meal (entrée, main course and dessert) for 3 euros, regarding accommodations the government has a special program for students called “la CAF” which helps students and young people pay for accommodation and rent, also there are student associations handing out free groceries every week, which actually helps me save a big buck since food is really expensive here. Museums, tours, and other cultural activities are also free for students, and I can ask for scholarships if needed. So French social programs are a big big plus. Thirdly, As someone who works in tourism, I can confirm Paris is trying to rip off tourists as best as they can. I work selling tickets for a very popular sightseeing tour in Paris, we sell the tickets for 42€, nonetheless , I’ve seen the exact same tickets online for 35€, and I’m pretty sure you could get them at 25€ or less. I’ve also had pints in less than 3€ and I’ve seen pints in more than 8€ in more touristy places in the city. this confirms my point about Paris trying to rip off tourists an in general people are abusive and most of the time will try to take advantage of you, specially if you don’t speak the language. So is it worth it living here? For the price of education, the international exposure and the experience of living in Paris it is :). Just I don’t know if I wanna stay here to work for the reasons you already mentioned in your video.

The sad part is that to live in Paris with a proper life quality given the cost of living, you'd need to make a salary much closer to the ones you only see in America which are more than twice what people make in France. It's no wonder so many people who are already full time workers rely on "social programs", which, if you ask me, is not a particularly a good way of living... Bureaucracy is also abysmal, anything you do in France will take 5 times more time to get done (if it gets done at all)

@@Jose96David more than 35 percent of french people depend on social benefits to survive . I earn 2600 euros monthly before taxes which is a very big salary in France and after taxes iam left with 1920 euros after deducting rent insurance and all the bills I have 860 euros left from which 700 euros goes to food and buying gas for the car amd the remaining 160 euros to save monthly and that is not the case for majority of people who make roughly between 1300 to 1600 after taxes

Having lived in Paris for more than three years, I can indeed say with some confidence that Paris is not more expensive than any other city which offers such charisma. The rents are lower than even some mid-tier cities in the US, you can roam around the entire Ile-de-France region by spending 75 Euros. Most restaurants are cheaper ( and of better quality) compared to what I get now in the States. Stay away from the tourist hotspots, explore the more residential neighbourhoods ( the 15me for example) and you will definitely not find Paris THAT expensive. And a croissant is only an Euro, did I mention! Not to forget the baguette!

I have been living in France for about 15 years. I have never ever paid more than 100 euros per night when I visit Paris (I go very frenquently) . It depends on which neighborhood you stay. And I have stayed in much better rooms than you were for one third of the price. Given the extensive metro line, you can stay in neighborhoods such as the 10th or the 12th and go anywhere you want. Regarding food, you could have a proper meal for less than 20 euros and a full course meal (entrée, plat, dessert et cafe) for less than 40 euros in Paris easily. If you are the type of tourist that goes to Champs-Elysée to do shopping then you will spend a lot of money.

That's honestly happening everywhere. The problem with a free market, unregulated housing industry is that developers only want to build housing for the super-rich, convert existing housing for the super-rich and then manipulate the market by only releasing blocks of homes at a time. A lot of companies can't find workers anymore and are going to force the government to do something about it, even if it means socializing the housing market more. They have no choice. Go on LA boards, NYC boards. People are leaving. They have no choice. Unless you are a millionaire, you can't survive.

Same thing happens there like it does in Hawaii and the Caribbean. You have rich Westerners with wide open eyes coming to your city who love the place. They bring their wealth and outbid locals for housing in the place they grew up in their entire life. I'm not even talking about the real estate vultures who come in and start manipulating housing prices. Soon you have to leave. There's a reason many of the people are so angry all the time at tourists in these places. I used to want to live in San Diego as a kid. It may have been more realistic in the mid-1990s but I never really got a great job and housing prices in those types of areas have generally soared so much that even if I did make good six-figures, it probably still would be unaffordable. At this point, I'm content to just be able to afford a house where I live. Even that isn't happening.

Expensive places always have the same issues. Bureaucracy and corruption make everything more difficult and expensive. Difficult and expensive to build housing because of restrictive zoning laws. Rules and regulations and red tape on everything, etc. All these things drive up the cost of living. And I doubt it's just the height limits that make it hard to build in Paris. Paris is very densely populated even with the height restrictions.

Paris is so expensive for two reasons. Paris is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world so it's an issue of supply and demand. Lots of demand means supply is low so prices are high. Second reason is Paris is expensive for the locals due to high French taxes so prices for tourists are high.

Paris is expensivs but not so much, BIGGEST problem in the city are super low salaries that big number of workers earn(same thing in other french cities but at least they aren't so expensive). Kindergarten teachers earn less than 1600 euros neto per month...so many things to do, so much responsibility and in the end of the month you earn less than 1600 euros... to rent 2 bedroom apartment in outskirts of Paris they have to give their whole salary. How to give my kid to them and expect that my kid will be safe and that it will learn something when those workers are barely surviving. Same thing with accountants...they had to study very hard and then they can end up with 20-24k euros bruto per year. Pathetically low salaries (even in many IT companies web developers, software testers are earning around 24k bruto per year).

Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future. Putting our time and effort in activities and investments that will yield a profitable return in the future is what we should be aiming for. Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. Of course Paris would be more expensive than Dubai. Paris is a real city with a rich culture and heritage. Dubai is a glorified artificial golden prison. If you see Paris or any other real city from the air, you see how the demand is flowing into the city and real estate values rise gradually as you go closer to the centre. In Dubai you just see a cluster of towers with artificially high costs surrounded by empty desert. Land in Dubai doesn't have any real value driven by demand, it's entirely fake and only built on speculation.

I can get Paris being expensive when it comes to rents, same with London.....but Dublin? I did live there years back and the only reason rent is so expensive there is due to lack of housing. Although it's an interesting city to visit, it's not in the same league as Paris or London, New York..

Landlords manipulate the housing market in many Western countries. Can't believe people haven't figured this out yet. People have no idea. There is a ton of housing. For the most part, there is no shortage of it.

FYI, you mention paris doesn’t have tall buildings like NYC, LA and London. Most European countries have limited height of buildings to preserve the history. Usually you will find tall buildings somewhere outside of their historic city center and Paris has just that with their financial district just outside of the historic city center. La Defense. But everyone wants to live in the historic city center. I’m also glad these comments aren’t filled by tr0||s from 🇨🇳 like your video on China in Latin America.
