I love how the people being labeled as "controversial" are often coincidentally the only people that aren't afraid to broach the truly controversial topics that actually need to be talked about. So weird how that works!

Controversial = not conforming to politically correct behaviour (nothing against the state, nothing against the powers that be, nothing against the status quo). It doesn't apply to people/ entities with the ability and will to pay off the people who would otherwise make the accusation.

Brilliant to use Carlos as a intro. People were so quick to kick him out for being in a room with a controversial figure. Of course, Carlos has a big mouth and will double down on stupid comments from Twitter users, but he never said that he agreed with any of the controversial ideas that man had. It's insane that almost no one cares when other clearly controversial figures get into esports. We have reports of executions that happened in Saudi Arabia not even a year ago, and now we are supposed to believe that they are going to change their entire culture, laws, and minds on a whim just because they are hiding what they are doing better? (Not good enough, by the way, there are still reports coming in.)

Tbh controversial nowadays just means "publicly says things I find offensive". Things that are said or done privately typically don't qualify someone as controversial in the public eye

"Controversial" basically belongs in the reddit basket of words on the level "asshole", "piece of shit", etc. The only way I can think redditors come up with these is that they can never point to an actual single event that made one controversial, and so its just a label given by them to someone they mildly disagree with on enough occasions. Disliking my favourite video game player, calling my favourite team bad, are all in the tier of stuff that gets one to the "controversial" label. This also happens primarily when that person is strongly spoken, I remember the years upon years that people hated LS on reddit and twitter for daring to have opinions and being strong willed and defending those opinions (about a video game of course)

Nuance is always good. The controversial label is a way to categorize a nuanced idea. This label as well as other labels are simply a tool. The fact that this tool is used more for negative intent rather than positive, points to the power and reach of some systemic evils. Pointing out hypocrisy is not enough to make the world a better place, in fact it makes things worse and is an aid to the systemic evils. This is where ideas like nihilism come from. This is why the controversial label is perceived negatively in the eyes of the consumer. It’s not their fault, the environment made them think like this. Im not here to spread negativity or meaningless, but if you struggle with this, try changing your environment! You’d be surprised how the big finish manipulate small finish if you live in their environment.

I think that this term is correctly applied. Richard Lewis is controversial, as he’s someone within the scene going against the grain, and rocking the boat. If the whole scene is going the direction of agreeing with ESL, or whatever publisher, Richard is controversial.

On one hand I do value what you and Richard Lewis do, what rubs me off the wrong way is that RL just approaches people way too aggressively and ends up vilifying them involuntarily. I understand people do wrong things but you both should understand most of the people you interact with are only 20+, when and not if they make stupid decisions, please keep in mind they may not be as mentally stable or developed as you are. Rather than pressing on them, a softer approach would probably help you achieve what you want. These are people you are dealing with, not animals. Keep up with the good work though!
