Jon is undoubtedly the more sound choice, but I don‘t think the Starks will wage a civil war against themselves. Even if Jon found out about the fact that Robb made him next in line, he‘s not going to raise a claim against his own brother. At least, the Jon we know about won‘t do that.

In the books, it's made very clear that when someone is resurrected from the dead, they change a lot. There could be gaps in their memories and huge changes in their personalities, and since Jon is probably gonna be resurrected in the books, he will undergo these changes as well. He might not even remember Rickon when he wakes up and might be completely fixated on what he was trying to do before he was actually assassinated (which is to go back to Winterfell and retake his family's seat of power). This might be a good justification for a civil war between Rickon and Jon's factions.

@@thecriticalmaester9702 people definitely change when they are brought back, but when you look at what was the case with Beric for example, I definitely don‘t see the possibility of a Stark Civil war; especially since this also completely undermines Jon‘s main priority of opposing the supernatural threat, where every man who dies in another battle is already lost to the greater cause; Rickon either inheriting the Throne or taking the North for Stannis also in no way undermines Jon‘s goal, especially that second possibility. Even Lady Stoneheart probably wouldn‘t fight her own family, and she was on the path of Darkness even well before dying in the first place. People change when they are brought back, but they don‘t do a complete 180°. Also Jon and Rickon are crucially both worgs, they are probably able to communicate with each other very well.

I think that Jon won’t change very much compared to Beric and Lady Stoneheart. Remember Beric forgot a part of his memories because his spirit died SIX times, which is a huge difference with Jon, who will be back probably just once. As to Lady Stoneheart, she was dead for THREE DAYS, and it is unlikely that Jon will be dead that long. And the most important aspect IMO is that Jon’s spirit never died. He has probably warged into Ghost and that will preserve in some sort his mental capability. The single most important Argument against the Northern Civil War in the Books is the Stark Children themself. Who we have left are Jon, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rikkon. Bran will become a Godking of the Old Gods, so very unlikely that he will return in Person. Jon will most likely survive his assassination attempt by his Brothers. I know, I know his Injuries are proof against it, but we have Bran who survived a Fall from a very high Tower, which he shouldn't have by any means, not to forget that we don't hear that he had a Tube in his Mouth during his Coma, so the fluids which Maester Luwin and Catelyn forced down his Throat should have ended, at least partially, in his Lungs; which would have killed him. So if we can throw out scientific and medical Reasons with Bran at the very start of the Story, we can throw them out of the window with Jon. Don't let me start with Jaime and the loss of his Hand, seriously that Man should be Dead and not depressed! So don't tell me about Jon being Dead, the fact is: if we follow Scientific Reason then Bran should have died in Book One, Catelyn Stark would still be dead, Jaime would be dead, etc. So until we see a Corpse, Jon is alive. Seriously injured and probably in a Coma, but alive! Sansa will flee from the Vale and return to the North, probably to the Wall, because she knows Jon is there. Arya will return to the North probably after she encounters her Undead Mother in the Riverlands. AND Rikkon will return with Davos. But how will they recognize each other? Sansa will probably cut her Hair (GRRM has a thing with female Characters losing their Hair when they lose the protection of the Patriarchy) and has still dark Hair when she arrives in Castle Black, furthermore, she will be fourteen. Girls that Age change rapidly so it is unlikely that Jon, Rikkon or Arya will recognize her at first. Arya is probably Eleven or older when she returns, but she was nine when she left Winterfell, same Problem as Sansa she will have changed a lot! And now Rikkon was 3 at the start of this Series, THREE and is now FIVE. He won't have any Memories, aside from some very vague ideas, of his Family. He probably will know that his Mother had Red Hair and Blue Eyes, why? Because that's what everyone told him and us about her. He will know that his Father has grey Eyes, long dark brown Hair and a Long face, why? Again because that's what we and he are most likely hear from EVERYBODY when they describe Eddard Stark. And now Question: Who fits these Descriptions too? Jon Snow and Sansa Stark! Rikkon has no other Memories of his Family, other than probably Bran, than what EVERYBODY tells everybody about these Characters. And Rikkon is an abandoned Child, all he wants is his Family back, a Family he doesn't even remember. Even if he has Visions, that doesn't mean he remembers anyone of them. But shaggy Dog will remember them, because of Ghost. So Rikkon will trust his Direwolf and accept Jon and Sansa, when he reunites with his oldest Siblings, I think Sansa's red Hair will have partially grown back and the Color she used to dye her Hair will be outwashed at least partially. So even if some Lords want to honor Robbs Will, the siblings won't let them do that. By that Time Jon was nearly assassinated by his Nightswatch Borthers, Sansa was used, abused and forced to marry an enemy of her Family and not to mention that her Mothers Family was abusing her too, so none of these 3 will even think of doing something similar to their Siblings. Rikkon as Heir will probably threaten to behead everyone who even thinks of beheading Jon for Deserting the Nightswatch. Also the Nightswatch Brother will most likely tell everyone who wants to hear it that Jon was killed by them and resurrected by the Red Woman, why? It should be obvious they don't want him as their Lord Commander, for goodness sake, they tried to assassinate him, so telling everyone his Watch has ended is the easiest way out for everyone. Also as the Big Brother of the Warden of the North, who will most likely rule in the Wardens Name, they have someone who can help them more, than brooding Lord Commander Jon Snow. So Civil War in the North? Unlikely because of the Siblings desire to find their Home again, their safe and happy Place, which was their childhoodhome at Winterfell. All they want is going back to that Place, which is impossible, but they will find a new Home and start again, with each other.

I do like the civil war idea. Rickon being the most wolfish of the siblings lends credence to the idea that his cause would be just as wrathful. If Jon becomes the leader they would most likely fall under the rule of Stannis or Danny depending on where it happens in the timeline. This civil war not only being a battle of true blood vs the wishes of their king but it’s a battle for complete independence or safety in peace won at any cost. It’s so sad this story has a genuine chance of never being completed :(
@raylast3873 Жыл бұрын
Why would Jon support Stannis or Dany. That happened in the show but it was entirely a contrivance by D&D. In reality, we know Jon rejected Stannis‘ offer, and Robb‘s letter would make Jon a King, not a vassal of Stannis, so if this manages to convince Jon it certainly won‘t convince him to turn against his brother or to kneel to Stannis. It‘s likely that the succession will ultimately be decided by which way the Northern Lords go, and it‘s very unlikely Jon would insist on his claim if he has to go against them. It‘s possible that different camps might back a different heir, but it‘s extremely unlikely it would come to a war.
@alexiavya722 Жыл бұрын
@@raylast3873 I think the decision for Jon to not become a Stark yet is because he understood that he would be putting Sansa’s life in major danger at the time. Now Stannis has not only risked his entire force’s life to save his sister “Arya” but he’d have the backing of most Northerners. Maybe I have it the wrong way round though. Maybe Wyman will control Rickon’s claim and that’s the side who backs Stannis while Jon’s side believes in furthering the Rob Stark idea of northerners not kneeling. Somehow his ideals need to line up with the wildlings because it’s going to be a war between them and northern lords.
@raylast3873 Жыл бұрын
@@alexiavya722 I mean, Jon is most of all loyal and also ultimately pragmatic. He would want the Starks to work together and get rid of the Boltons. That‘s gonna his priority and if Rickon has serious support no way is Jon going against that, even if his own backing was stronger. He doesn‘t want to fight his own family and would avoid that by all means. Now, who the Lords will ultimately back is an interesting question. Jon is in every way a more credible candidate especially if you have to fight a war to win the North back (something Robb was very much aware of), so from a purely practical viewpoint the Northern Lords have plenty of reasons to support Jon IF he raises a claim and especially if Robb‘s preference on this question is made public. On the other hand, from Wyman‘s POV, if he has his hands on Rickon then that‘s an option that gets more power to his house, but that‘s assuming they can win the war without Rickon actually doing much. If they have to fight the Boltons in pitched battle and rally as many supporters as possible, it would still make sense to go with Jon. But we‘ll have to see what Wyman actually does.

I had the same thought about there being a northern civil war between Jon and Rickon, but it's hard to imagine Jon taking up and against his cousins. There's also the Flint who encountered Bran on his way north, who may be with Stannis' army now--even if a lord ignored Jon being legitimized, it'd be hard to ignore Bran, as he is older than Rickon. I don't see Rickon himself being critical to fighting the Others--he's just too young. But his tale may end up being a shaggy dog story--a long and winding take that leads nowhere. I suspect he'll play the role of a bit of a red herring for the northern lords and there will be some other resolution to the Northern conspiracies. Your video made me realize that there can't be a single grand northern conspiracy--because Manderly is supporting Rickon and the lords present for the reading of Robb's will would support Jon. Thus Manderly can't be conspiring with the Mormonts et al, because he hasn't been informed of Robb's will.

I'll meet you half way. The will legitimizes Jon. However, it doesn't name an heir, it designates Catelyn to choose an heir. Making Jon legit forces him into the line before going outside the immediate descendants of Ned. This is why her character needed to return. It's not just revenge, she has unfinished business. This is also why she wants Arya or Sansa. Rickon's narrative is foreshadowed in Sam's backstory by Dickon. It's either brilliant or clumsy, we'll see. To pull from real history, I would suggest a foundation in the Prince John and King Richard of Robinhood. Theon's narrative may also be dropping clues to the basic bones of Rickon's arc. Theon and Jaime have a weird parallel going on in the bones of their narratives. But it basically revolves around a unrecognizable heir showing up. Age rather than disfigurement will underpin it and why Shaggy needs to be there. The veiw of Jon by most readers is clouded by their expectations. I don't believe most grasp his real role, they just see a cliche hero. But he's a John not a Richard.

Bro, Rickon is literally 5 years old at this point in the book. All these theories I hear about Rickon fighting or uniting the north are really dumb. He can only be a symbol to rally around at 5 years old. Do you know many 5 or 6 year olds? Most of them can't even speak a full sentence without stuttering their words 20x over. I seriously think people with these kind of theories have only seen the TV show and think Rickon is like 11years old. Also a Stark civil war is even dumber than Rickon fighting along side his wolf on a battlefield. If you think Jon would allow this then you clearly haven't been actually reading the books and don't know Jon at all.

I see two potential problems with this. First is that Rickon is like what? 4-5 years old? Even if he is crowned King he will need someone to take care of his realm before he can rule. In this case, if we also consider how unstable North is right now, there might be space for manipulation of the child. The second one is that there are still characters alive that have witnessed Robb choosing Jon as his heir. These character are also unaware of the fact that Rickon lives so there might actually be two different conspiracies in the North once Jon is resurrected in the books and returns South. One group wants Rickon the other Jon. There might be unwanted clash between them....unwanted, I mean for anyone who loves Starks as much as I do lol :D Regardless, I remember I once read that Dumb and Dumber wanted to exclude Rickon while writing the script for the first season but GRRM told them he had plans for Rickon. So he's definitely important.
@thecriticalmaester9702 Жыл бұрын
I agree. The lords who crown Rickon will have political ambitions of their own. They will try to manipulate Rickon by making themselves his regents, and with that kind of authority, they'll probably also want to oppose anyone who tries to go against Rickon's rule. This does include Jon. I don't think that people realize how being resurrected from the dead changes a person in this world. Yes, Jon will be resurrected from the dead, but it is going to change his personality tremendously. This might make him forget Rickon and some of his other family members, and this will make it easier for George to justify his desire to be king of the North. This absoltely makes the civil war between him and Rickon possible. It's a plot that I'm most excited for, even though I really love the Starks and don't really want them to fight.😭😭😭 Dumb and Dumber did want to exclude Rickon, and in hindsight they probably should have. They had no idea how to handle his storylin and they just ended up ruining George's intricately planned plot. On the show, the Grand Northern conspiracy isn't even a thing.

While the last few seasons of the show weren't as good as the early ones, I think Rickon's story ending abruptly may have been a note from George. A shaggydog story is a long winding tale that ultimately amounts to nothing, and George names Rickon's wolf this within a few pages of the old "wolf killed by a stag" foreshadowing that was very on the nose.

Rickon is the strongest contender, if a couple of things happen. One, Rob's wife, Jeyne Westerling isn't pregnant (remember, she didn't die in the books and George does nothing coincidentally). Two, the will gets North and is rejected by other Northern lords( Unfortunately, bastards are frowned upon in Westeros). Three, Jon survived, is still human and refuses to dispossess his cousins( Book Jon desires to be lord of Winterfell but doesn't want to take it from Sansa. However lords loyal to Rob's will might push him to). Four, Sansa survives little finger but isn't going along with his plans to marry Harry the heir to make him lord of Winterfell. Five, Bran is found, but has ascended into godhood and has lost all interest in rulling. Six, Stannis doesn't suddenly decide he'd rather be king of the North. My guess is, Rickon will complicate the succession for a while, but he will ultimately die a glorious death. I believe the show succession will be the book succession. Sansa will rule the North, either as regent or in her own right, kinda like Elizabeth 1. Either way, the courtly games have moved North. I can't wait to see it play out in the books, because it's deliciously complicated and full of potential plots and conspiracies.

what about the "shaggy dog" trope? his direwolf is literally named shaggydog and the direwolves represent the character and fate of their owners. lady was killed even though she was just chilling the entire time, which represents what happened to sansa's innocence and childhood upon realizing who the lannisters really are. ghost literally foreshadowed jon getting killed. nymeria was named after the warrior-queen who pretty much built house martell, and this is a direct contrast to the "elegant" direwolf lady, and sansa and arya are pretty obviously projecting their own personalities in their direwolves' names. summer is bran's direwolf, because he is a sweet summer child, and summer ends / dies to make way for (drumroll) "winter" because winter is freaking coming. grey wind, the fiercest and bravest of them all, who is the direwolf of the young king of the north himself robb stark. too bad the bleak name could also be a foreshadowing of robb's death. and then we get to shaggydog. just fyi, the "shaggy dog" trope is about a character whose arc goes all over, but actually ending in an anti-climax. why would george name rickon's direwolf with such a trope if rickon's arc isn't going to end in a bitter anti-climax? i think rickon's arc would appear to be promising but it'll likely end in a bitter and sad way because george doesn't really do happy endings. edit: shaggydog could also mean that rickon is pretty much a feral child, and that he might end up with the wildlings or somewhere deeper in the wild north. that could be his ultimate fate. a sad fate for a stark, out there where nobody knows what happened to him. not unlike benjen stark. also, the previously planned title of book 7 before it was changed to "a dream of spring" was "a time for wolves". this could also suggest a truly bittersweet ending for the remaining stark children. nymeria's pack of wolves and dogs are going to war, possibly reuniting with arya. ghost might actually guide jon's lost "soul" as he gets "resurrected" or however that actually plays out in the books. we already know that summer and hodor get sacrificed for bran, as confirmed by george himself with the real origin of hodor's name 😭. and finally with rickon, i think shaggydog will really live up to the name and would have an arc that involves going quite feral warg or getting lost somewhere in the wild. but definitely, there's no plain vanilla happy ending for the starks and their direwolves.

I agree that Rickon is the rallying figurehead for the North. BUT he is a child - five or six years old? He would have no memories of his family, who all changed beyond simple recognition. We don't actually know how much more 'free folk' he is, and how much he was told about his origins. It is possible he had to use a fake name all this time and might not even recognise being 'Rickon Stark'. Shaggydog is absolutely vital in proving his identity and claim. Otherwise we have another 'Young Griff' mistery in our hands. I also doubt he would play a role in actual war and battles considering he is itty bitty. He might act as a symbol but I cannot see him riding into battle on Shaggy or something. And I doubt Jon would ever go against his siblings. Especially after refusing Stannis' offer of being Lord Stark. And if he wants the North lead by a adult man to organise defences against the Walkers, he might agree a compromise and become King Regent or Lord Protector. It happened in real history, when there was a boy-king or a Queen, someone would be named Lord Protector to act as the military leader. If anything, I would sooner bet on Littlefinger using Sansa to claim the North "on Rickon's behalf" and then try to drive a wedge between the siblings. Maybe pushing for Sansa to be the Regent and then trying to takeover? I would really lough if the 3 sibilings found themselves in cross fire of plots and schemes and agreed without others input to make things work. Rickon would be King in the North. He is Robb's true born brother and if Robb had known he was alive he would've named Rickon his heir ahead of Jon. Jon becomes the Lord Protector and has point in war matters. Sansa takes on the title of Lady of Winterfell. She runs point in management and organisation of the Castle. Together they act as Rickon's co-regents? Of course, there is still room for a strife. Lords who plotted to put Rickon on the throne might want a Regency Council, so they have more power and say. What's the point of a boy-king if you cannot mold him? And there is still the matter of succession. Who is Rickon's heir? He is a boy and it will be many years before he can even try to sire children. Robb wanted to explicitly disinherit Sansa. But things are different now. So, does she come next? Or Jon? And how Arya fits into this?
@havok6280 Жыл бұрын
The fate of each Stark is tied to the name if their wolf. Sansa will be Lady of Winterfell. Arya is a warrior. Jon died and became a Ghost. Bran will bring the end of Winter. Robb was like a wind. And Rickon's story is much ado about nothing, a shaggy dog story.

Robb's reign was as brief as a gust of wind. I could see that being true. But Lady died, so doesn't that mean that Sansa's hopes of ever becoming a lady are dead too? I like the Bran one. True, though I must pushback on your former point. Some people might prefer a child king if that child king is more tractable. Long-sighted, ambitious lords might prefer to serve as regents in the time being, influencing the affairs of a kingdom through the power vested on them by/through the child king. Such lords could set themselves up for much success by doing that; so I have to push back on that point. But, as you said, we'll see how everything turns out when the books are released... if they are ever released that is.

If the importance of a character goes unnoticed and requires subsequent media treatment to point it out - either it was actually not so important to the main storyline after all, or only important in a limited way or someone simply didn’t do their job of communicating it properly in the first place. Further: what goes unnoticed cannot create a mystery, because, tadaah, it went unnoticed. If you look back and in retrospect wonder why something was even there in the first place, that’s not a story mystery, that’s just wondering what the fuck went wrong for the writer in terms of meaningfully using what was laid out on the table for storytelling or at least communicating some sense of how the apparent lack of significance might be the key to something bigger.

I mean, I get what you're saying, but also, let's not forget, that the characters in the book are very different from the show. Rickon has been in Skagos for a long time, raised by cannibals and a wildling girl, and he probably feels very abandoned and angry. Jon is not a goody-two-shoes in the books and is much more morally grey. We also don't know how his resurrection might change him, because in the books resurrections have consequences. Resurrections can cause gaps in a person's memory and can result in personality changes. So we don't know how this will manifest with Jon. Jon might not even remember Rickon and that could fuel Rickon's feelings of abandonment and rage. Sounds like a recipe for a conflict between the two brothers to me.

My theory on Rickon is this: he will die, soon. (Nothing new). But his link with his wolf is the important think to be aware. The name of the wolf only points the fate of the owner. Rickon will die, but he will warg into his wolf. In his wolf’s body will be were Rikkon will be esencial. If you tel me. I would revive Jon but kill Ghost, I would keep Rickon dead but Shaggy Dog alive, beside Jon. That would be EPIC.

I feel like you didn’t say anything insightful or thought provoking. Rickon has a dire wolf. That’s all?

Did you watch the video through the end??? 🤔 The direwolves are important for fighting the white walkers and for uniting the north for that fight. Rickon will probably be the Stark that the northerners use to do that, since he is the only legitimate son of Ned Stark that's left - at least the only one who's a male and who still has his legs. Therefore, he'll be important for the future instalments of the series.
