As a native Spanish speaker, I must say your videos are excellent and capture so many subtleties that are rarely taught. Of course, I don’t need to learn (any more) Spanish, but I enjoy watching you. I’m currently learning other languages-Italian and French mostly-and I really wish there were other KZbinrs as clear, nuanced, and straightforward as you.

Native speaker here. Verdict: listen to her, all legit advice. On pudiera, in this case, don't substitute for pudiese (which is the other past subjunctive type--pudiera/pudiese are generally interchangeable just not in this case). Also, pudo and podria haberte ayudado, can in some cases mean the same thing, but there can be some important differences. El pudo haberte ayudado (means he definitely had been able to help you), whereas podria haberte ayudado (he with an element of likelihood would have been able to help you). Situationally, these may not matter, but the former is assertive, while the second one remains somewhat hypothetical/conditional. Awesome video! I am using as a cheat to get my wife up to speed. I have a question. I presume your a native spanish speaker. I was speaking with my tutor about this and she explained that on the day to day this are interchangeable but are slightly grammatically different. Poder + haber is a hypothesis and is usually followed by a conditional clause (I could have gone to the party but I didn't because you didn't call me), while Haber + poder is usually followed by a consequence (I would have been able to go to the beach but I had too much work). I would love your expertise on this, as it's a complicated subject for me (and most, english speakers). ❤ Salud!
@PabloUliver-Bass-Guitar10 ай бұрын
@@daniellean5769 Hello! Yes, I speak Spanish as my first language. I am Cuban and we have a slightly different variant like every Spanish-speaking country hehehe. All of these examples are very similar and interchangeable with each other. But with Spanish the same thing happens as with English, where the trend is towards simpler phrases even with words in other grammatical times that are similar but not the same. For example, the second sentence that you put here can be said in another way: ¨Yo hubiera ido a la fiesta¨... and it can be understood in the same way as ¨habría podido ir¨ + ¨podría haber ido¨. The conditional clause, or the consequence, can be implicit, or as we say ¨quedar entre dicho¨ (without having been said but it was assumed and understood). Or the other person in the conversation could have said it as a cause or justification. My advice is that you learn Spanish in a way appropriate to what you intend. If you want a very formal language, it is studied in a specific way, but if you want it less formal (but without the need to speak it vulgarly) then it will sound a little different but simpler. The important thing is to be understood, as when learning any language. Greetings! I hope I have been helpful. Espero haber sido de ayuda! o... espero haber ayudado...jejeje

Just discovered your videos, thank you! That's the thing I hate about Spanish is there are a gazillion ways to say the same thing. And when you think you are on the right track you hear someone say that nobody talks like that in real life... So you still don't understand what people are saying despite all you know... And learning alone, I think you have a video on that, is quite challenging for me since I'm not good at setting up structure so I learn a little and then forget it anyway. Thanks again, appreciate what you do.
@katy1523110 ай бұрын
I think there’s a gazillion ways to say the same thing in every language. The only way to know how people actually talk, in my opinion, is just to listen to people talk a lot… That way you get used to hearing people talk and know what sounds natural just like you learned in your native language. It takes 100’s of hours of listening though. If native content is challenging, look into comprehensible input! @dreamingspanish is a good place to start

For the last one, I asked a guy from Colombia one time, and he said "podíamos haberte ayudado" is also OK (i.e., the imperfect instead of conditional or preterite). He said all three options sounded acceptable to him. I don't know how widespread that is, I have only one datapoint.
