Why is there chocolate sauce in the Range Rover gearbox? - Edd China's Workshop Diaries 19

The day has finally come, our 1986 Range Rover is finally going to get clean. But will it make a difference, will we be able to tell at all with all that rust and peeling paint? Will the car still be carbon neutral if we wash off all the vegetation? Will it fall apart if we remove all the cobwebs? Will it simply dissolve when the water hits it? Well, we're about to find out. Surely, now it runs and it's clean, it will be ready for its MoT test. Or will we find something else that needs to be fixed first?...
Edd China's Workshop Diaries 19: Wash day for the Range Rover (Flushing out the Range Rover gearbox, should the transmission fluid really look like chocolate sauce?)

As an old-school mechanic I really appreciate Edd's practical approach to problems instead of just throwing silly money at everything. Not everyone has $100K+ and immaculate workshops to throw at "barn finds" like some Yanks do on YT. Corrosion and busted screws always challenge, but pressure and torque win in the end.

For rounded torx, philips, pozidrive etc my favourite tool is the manual impact driver. The old school type you hit with a hammer and its cammed so it rotates slightly. Kind of the same idea as the jack trick which also worked a treat. Will hopefully remember this for a time i dont have an impact available. For rounded internal hex screws (unbrako/allen) its often possible to hammer in a slightly bigger torx bit. Usually works better than dedicated extractor bits. Although for external hex bolts and tall cylindrical allen screw heads the extractor sockets are great. Anyway those are just some tips which might come in handy for anyone unfamiliar with them. But nothing new to a lot of hobbyists and pros out there including, i'm sure Edd as well. Excellent videos Edd and the rest of the crew. Just stumbled over this after not having watched wheeler dealers for years now, and i really like the production and presentation of this new show as a whole. Thanks a lot and wish you all the best!
@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella 2 жыл бұрын
There's a couple of additional friction enhancing tips: one is to take a torx tip and grind the end square (like a pin punch) or even slightly hollow (like a wobble broach) so the sharp corners broach into the fillet radii at the bottom of the female recess when the axial force is applied generously, and the other is to put some tungsten carbide grit in the recess. If you put this together with what Edd did (and didn't) try: 1) Some heat and penetrating oil (or better still, beeswax in conjunction with heat) *before* beginning (and before the recess gets further damaged) 2) Inexorable axial force (thanks, Dave!) _ideally with an overlay of axial vibration, but it's important that this is not at the expense of maintaining a high axial force even at the lowest point in each cycle of vibration, and this would take some arranging._ _The old school impact driver (as Hamring suggests) has a lot of merit if you can lay your hands on one - you'll need to source a 1/4" hex impact socket for it if you need use any torx or other specialised bit in it_ 3) Sharp ended driver bit (if torx) 4) Tungsten carbide grit you're giving yourself the best chance of success There is one more step if dealing with potential galling, eg stainless steel male/female thread pairing: Whenever a tiny rotation is made in the loosening direction, reverse the turning force and retighten before seeking a further tiny movement . This cannot be hurried, and in this case, use cooling, not heat. The time to take action against galling is before it starts. If all else fails, TIG (if it's available) is a better bet than MIG.

As an ex aircraft engineer , there are a few products in our industry that might be useful , ie jointing compounds for dissimilar metals that you may not be aware of, you just used standard grease when you were re assembling the mini rear end whilst discussing the potential reaction between steel /aluminum and copper as I recall, in aviation we always use specific compounds to minimise the reactions between dissimilar metals. Also , another aviation trick when dealing with possible structure structure movement as you mentioned when dropping the transmission oil on the old Range Rover , we use a thing called a jury strut , much like builders use when installing a Lintel to prevent any movement. I think they call them floor or accrow props, but the same idea , rig something up under a little tension to prevent movement. You are way more experienced than me, but thought these might be worth mentioning to viewers , PS love the show !!

I do like the mini segment (episode) it embodies the mechanic work (or any other manual labor) especially if you didn't do the previus job /mantenace yourself, it may take half a day... it might take weeks!

Hi, Edd, my name is Sergey, I am 34 years old, I live in Russia, and the only thing I watch on TV is the Wheeler Dealers program, where you repair cars, you do it divinely, explain everything in an accessible and understandable way with the help of your videos, I learned how to fix most of the breakdowns in the car, and now I have found your channel on You Tube, I subscribed to your channel and look forward to every new video with pleasure and impatience!!!
