1:19-1:42 Is why people hate guitar youtube, and really just social media as a whole. Things that were done out of passion are now not just done for money but done in a revenue focused way. Even channels I don't hate, like yours, hit a point where to continue growing the videos become more and more generic click bait that feels like its determined by what advertisers want more than any passion for the videos themselves.

Unfortunately speaking from a creator standpoint, it’s KZbin’s fault. Generally we’ve all been knowledge seekers and enjoy regular content. However they lump us all into the other niches out there, which they way they push videos out is if the viewer clicks on your video “it’s cause of a catchy thumbnail” and the longer they watch is because of that “thumbnail”(image). Just learning all this now since I started doing this it’s a stupid method

@@SearchingForTonemany years ago I started a KZbin channel and it was growing in popularity. People started sending me free stuff to review and I was enjoying it. Even had another large KZbinr come down to consult with me on how to make my channel grow and to make more money. As more and more stuff got sent to me and companies offer discount codes to people who bought the products, I realized that my channel was turning into more of an advertisement for companies. I was sitting at work one day and I had to uploaded a video at home that was rather large than taking some time to edit. I made the decision right then and there that I was going to delete my KZbin channel and never be involved with content creation again. I think people grow weary of videos like "this store sent me 10 guitars so I can decide which is the best one" type stuff or the really pretentious shit like "When I started my Jazzmaster journey..." Even worse is it seems like as soon as one guy does a video on Jazzmasters (I'm not including Puisheen in this, his channel is always really informative and interesting) the rest of the usual suspects have a Jazzmaster video. It's all so repetitive and grating. I saw *someone* almost in tears of disbelief at the realization that rosewood or maple fretboards offer a minute difference in tone. I mean... Come on. The stuff I hate is when the youtubers are pretentious, condescending, know-it-all, or endlessly push their narrow opinions as if they should be "fact" for all musicians. I also absolutely despise when youtubers do a gear comparison, declare that the cheaper thing is better (or just as good) when they don't know what they're playing, but then still try and justify why you should spend the 3-10x on the more expensive piece. Shull has done this on Les Pauls for instance. I can't watch him anymore because of his crazy defenses of truly mind boggling opinions (like how he won't shut up about how tube screamers are crap and no one should ever use them. If he was being memey it'd be one thing, but he's perfectly serious). There are /r/guitar and /r/guitars because one of them is run by some truly vile mods. They've gone so far as mass banning people who post on competing subreddits. I can't remember which though. /r/guitarcirclejerk is really just a bunch of normal people getting together to try cope with the idiocy that goes on in the guitar community, and poke fun at the ridiculous hills people choose to die on. You get CRAZY responses, but then they often "/uj" and their opinions are perfectly reasonable. It's supposed to be over the top, by design. I like genuine, humble youtubers who just like to geek out about gear and are accepting of the tastes of others. Tim Pierce, for instance, is a world class talent, but he's also so geniune, friendly, and an all around great guy that anyone would want to hang out with. This channel is another one: Landon doesn't care about being a snob. He cares about geeking out about playing guitar and trying random gear. Robert Baker is also one of my favs. Super chill and approachable. Paul Davids is a tremendous talent, and all around genuine guy, but he just talks so far over the heads of most of his audience that I had to stop watching. He gets so into theory and advanced explanations that his content is really only suitable for people who just want to geek out watching him play or who have classical training (both of which are fine, but I'm just not in that crew). ULTIMATELY: We all have to figure out what we want to watch, and just don't watch the stuff we don't like. I had to watch a lot of youtubers before landing on the small subset that check the boxes I like. It's OK to unsubscribe, and I think people forget that. P.S. - I also hate when guitartubers push their own courses constantly. I tried a couple a while back just to see what they had, and they range from "fine" to "really dumb," but even the good ones aren't any better than the Fender lessons that cost a fraction as much. For what they charge, you can get virtual lessons with an actual person over zoom, etc. I would also never risk any of Paul David's courses because I would truly fear that his beginner stuff would be far over the head of most beginners. He's kinda typecasted himself that way.

I love guitar channels! I watch them on a regular basis. There are trends that bother me (like multiple channels all reviewing the same thing) but most of the things that “bother” me are not unique to guitar channels, and happen with any niche. What I love in particular about guitar channels is that they typically can give more varied information and experience with gear. Everyone has different ears and will have different tones, and I find that helpful in giving me more information than I could get as compared to some other product (like a camera, for instance). I think what irritates some people is seeing the shift from “hobby” review video to professional review video. It seems to me that some people have an irrational expectation that reviews should ONLY be hobbyist level and money and compensation should never enter the equation. I think more people love them than hate them, but the people who hate them are just very vocal and ugly. I find many people appreciate the time and effort it takes to make a review video, and they accept the “reviewer economy” if it is disclosed openly and the video helps them.

Here’s the main issue with most KZbin channels: they scour their brains to come up with ideas to make videos solely for the purpose of “mentioning their sponsors” first, and then still got their settings to allow for ads to appear every 3 minutes! I can't remember which group it was but either r/guitar or r/guitars banned someone for posting a picture of their new 9 string Schecter that they were super excited to have, because they felt it was a "shitpost". And then because people made fun of them for that, they started banning anyone who posted an extended range or schecter guitar. Then the other one popped up - either r/guitar or r/guitars, whichever didn't exist. It was basically intended to be a place you could post the things you like without getting judged because it's not what the mods like. Circlejerk subs are inherently parody subs, where they pretty much solely exist to take the piss out of the actual subs where people post seriously. The content is usually deliberately weird and offputting, but often posted by people who do actually care a lot about the topic; they just hate the cork-sniffing and infighting nonsense and want to make fun of it. Which means circlejerk subs look really offputting and obnoxious until someone comes in and asks a genuine, sincere question, at which point you often get some of the kindest, most sincere and positive responses. Reddit is weird.

@Lomoholga23 ай бұрын
The reason? Perhaps because the overwhelming majority are just modern day infomercials with the sole purpose of selling/marketing to consumers They contribute to the intense mindless consumerism that is never satisfied- the focus is on getting dopamine hits through gear acquisition, gear lust etc. Once you get the gear, you get a huge hit but it depletes quickly and you start the cycle again It takes away from the alternative reward system of actually playing the guitar and making music etc The gear manufacturers benefit HUGELY as for the cost of gear they get unparalleled marketing access that would have cost an outrageous amount of money and an actual marketing department back in the 80s and most of the 90s The KZbinrs benefit as they get some money from their channel, and they get free or greatly discounted gear Back in the 80s and into some of the 90s people were keenly aware of the cringe of informercials and the transparent marketing that it was Today however ppl seem to have mentally regressed and welcome infomercials into their lives with open arms and apparently enjoy being treated like a consumer But the consumer does benefit certainly from being exposed to new products that would have zero chance of being made back in the day as it would be impossible for a small maker to get something off the ground without a large investment etc

I think music YT is unique because decent amounts of people will watch unhelpful content. 5WW, Rhett, Beato, etc. make good videos but sometimes they're just dross and not informative. They're entertainment sure, but I think us esp. guitar players are more happy to shut off our brains and watch hollow videos than most. They normally have hard-to-resist title+thumbnails too. YT punishes videos that fail to retain people (even if they get clicks) so I think in other spheres, those types of videos would sink, but because they get clicks and long-watchers, then it invades everyone's recommended (even if you wouldn't watch it), and that annoys those that wouldn't watch it.

I like Glenn's videos not because of his mixing or his opinions on what music is "good", but because he makes me think and search for the truth, and ultimately save money. I think it's a little funny how ever since there was internet, there's always been someplace for people to gather and complain about things. Before it was Harmony Central, that was a huge one and lead to some consequential fallout between manufacturers, The Gear Page, Rig Talk, and now it seems to have moved to Reddit. It's like cliques in high school in a way. Hell, on Harmony Central alone in it's heyday each sub forum was it's own clique. The forums on Reddit very much remind me of the Harmony Central amps forum, only brave souls would dare enter. You'd better have thick skin, but they were always tight communities and I remember chatting with several members who are really chill people and some who went on to have big KZbin followings. My personal thoughts, I think it's just a little oversaturated, I also think personality bias comes into play, mostly with how some represent themselves on KZbin. Some personalities just rub some people the wrong way. I also see parallels happening to this crazy guitar community as a whole that happened to the KZbin tech channels, mostly with how new products are being presented. There's nothing wrong with that, every one is entitled to do whatever they want and run their business their own way, but it seems like that most of the Tech channels were more than happy to take the money from companies and just pump out video after video for free stuff or deep deep discounts, and not only that, provide all of the marketing and beauty shots for the manufacturers. The companies supplying the product doesn't have to do much anymore, they just write the check and let the KZbin machine handle all of it. At some point, people get burnt out on this stuff. It's all the same, video after video of the same thing and same information. That's my overall concern. Anyways, kudos for going into the Lions Den of Reddit though, I don't know if most would have the courage to venture there.

I just never read the comments. I'm fine with a channel being sales-focused as long as they're not misrepresenting what the gear can do, and I correct for that by comparing more than one channel's take on a particular piece of gear. I hate when youtubers give away cheap pedals and convince their viewers to jump through hoops to get them (selling your personal information to 3rd parties...). It's shady. It's also annoying to get 15 different reviews/ads for the same gear on the same day around the same time. I don't really hate any guitar channels or youtubers, although i get annoyed once in awhile. I wish more of them would just play more guitar and experiment creating cool sounds.

I think because of the endless selling of crappy cheap equipment and the endless charade of saying expensive doesn’t mean quality so they can sell or promote whatever cheap equipment they are pitching.

You mentioned my comment but didn't really respond to it. I still think that guitar gear tubers get "hate" (let's just call it general skepticism) because their content is clearly not made for consumers, it's made for their clients, who are major brands and corporations. Like I said in my comment, I can't fault anyone for making a business as a paid advertiser, but I don't really feel obligated to advertisers, either. They're performing a service to a brand, not to me. One thing that I do find off-putting is how many gear tubers recently have been pushing back against this sentiment by insinuating that I do owe them something for their content, whether it be suspension of skepticism or something else.

People don't. That's why they go on other platforms to talk about why they don't like the channel. There's a lot of guitar KZbinrs that I go right on past and don't even waste my time. If somebody asked my opinion on that channel, I'll tell them how I feel. Some of these channels have truly became so ridiculous that it's an absolute joke. How do I know? I used to have a pretty decent size KZbin channel in the early 2000s when KZbin first came out and it became nothing but people sending me gear to try to get me to sell their product. I already had a decent career and I said enough. Not doing it. Not spending 6 hours of my day uploading and editing a video to sell something for somebody else for free. After I quit the channel, I would still get notifications like crazy when people would comment. I just deleted the whole thing. I didn't even claim my last earnings until years later. My wife found that I was owed money on my unclaimed property site. KZbin in the beginning in my opinion was actually pretty good. It was individual opinions and it was not a lot of money being exchanged. Now it is replaced guitar magazines as the way for pedal companies, guitar companies and amplifier companies to sell their products to the masses.

My experience as a photog has made me see most people think anything artistic and creative should just be given to them. They have no problem spending money and being supportive to huge companies and sports figures but once they can talk directly to an owner it's seeing what they can manipulate. So especially online people choose to be keyboard warriors. Same as when I started trying to sell magazines or prints in the car community I was in. Was always people wanting to haggle me down or push boundaries etc. Common question was basically don't you have a real job why are you asking us for money? im offering a product for money, same as the jordan jersey and Nike. People just want to be mad at how others make money because they either can't or their day job eats up to much time for them to be creative. There are guitar channels, photography channels, and skate channels that I enjoy, and those I just don't watch. I've even been working on putting together 2 channels myself. However it is alot of work and alot of effort more than most people will ever fathom. It's not just that it's a guitar channel it's just humans being upset that you arnt working as hard as they are. Just look at the people working day jobs that get mad at fast food workers. Even though they go to them everyday for food instead of making their own food. While focusing their anger on the workers they can see instead of the company itself.

KZbinrs and other social media creators put themselves out there for opinions/engagement. If you have strong opinions, that will probably invite strong responses. I feel that GCJ and other subreddits are a lighthearted poke at creators who maybe take themselves too seriously, aren’t likable, or post clickbait. Probably easier said than done, but try to brush off the negative stuff. It’s the internet after all.

First off nope not a KZbin channel, just a ordinary guy, blue collar, if you don't know what that means then it's a person that gets up, gets ready for work punches a clock, gets their hands dirty so on and so fourth, we move. Now let's jump in this, i am into alot of things, unexplicable events, RC, music, movies, books, modding and building guitars. You get the picture. Sad fact is, I see haters on all my channels, so guitar channels are no different from what I see. Yes some people indeed do have alot of money coming in to them and their channels. As stated in this video I believe. More power to them, I dream of some of the guitars i see reviewed, there are some that I just want so badly, maybe someday. So here's the novel idea that we all have heard of, be happy for them, if you were in their shoes would you be like, nope don't feel like eating this week. Highly doubtful, we all got bills to pay. So just my opinion, but lighten up as long as they give an HONEST review they are still providing us the viewers with their take on a product. Now you do have to sift through the words, as they might say something like this, this could be better, When what they might want to say is this feature sucks or plain this product sucks. Don't go off one review, I don't care how much you trust a single channel, watch several and keep track of what they say could be better, if enough reviwers say the same suggestions or say the same things need worked on, then you can usually count on that specific thing not being the best. The other thing is this, yes every KZbin channel has to play the thumbnail game, if they want the most views possible. Before you call it click bait, know what click bait means. It's not when they make a dramatic thumbnail, as long as they talk about what that thumbnail shows. It's when they make a thumbnail and don't talk about what is in the thumbnail. Now I personally think that some thumbnails are in a bit of grey area, but that's part of that game I told you about. I'm also aware of some channels flat out are click baiting. So yeah that's a shame, not to mention a waste of our time. So yeah it's just my opinion but I think we could all do with a little less hate, and stop actively searching for something to complain about and put people down for, and be a lot more thankful that people took the time to give us their informed hands on opinion. Thier opinion. Not mine, not yours but their opinion, no one is holding a gun to your head, if you don't like it, go watch something else.

My biggest issue with KZbin guitar players and KZbin guitar videos in general, is that you still have no idea how anything really sounds. Everything is close mic’ed 🎤 🎙️ , and over produced. If I want to know how something sounds in a room I should be able to open up KZbin and have thousands of videos of guys just playing the amp And Guitar. But everything is over produced through some program on the computer, with 2 or more mic’s and several pedals. We need videos of how amps actually sounds in a room setting without being mic’ed, and Guitars being played without pedals. Otherwise…. It’s a pointless commercial video. Just my opinion.🤷🏻♂️

I think it has to do with human nature and social media. When people perceive themselves as part of a community they take on the values of that community and get a sense of meaningfulness by acting out those values and growing in the esteem of their community members. When you are a member of a subreddit, and a prominent point of view develops among the members, it is psychologically easy and rewarding to shift your view in that direction and join the crowd. Combine this with the fact that anger gets more clicks so in the context of reddit in particular these social dynamics tend to express themselves in more negative ways.
@rockerbuck9673 ай бұрын
Some videos are over-scripted. Some take too long to get to the point. I know KZbin's algorithm looks at watch time and retention but if you make quality, informative content, you should be able to keep viewers around. If you're worried about retention time, then go for KZbin shorts. There's people out there that like those too.

Where is the hate/love? Many just watch videos and won't even see the comment section. Some who comment won't see further than the first comment beneath theirs as they type. Only a few and the channel owner will see the full comment section. Others don't see much love or hate, just a video. Love is in the views. Proof is in the eating. What's the point of clicking a "Like" button anywhere or even commenting "I like this"? This is redundant. It seems many have no own critical sense and only want to blindly trust others: they then hate commerce of all sorts as well as what offers them a freedom of choice they never learned to exercise. They are the belated children communism preys on, wanting the world to be their mother.

It's people fundamentally not understanding KZbin is a job. And KZbin is a bad paying job. Which creates, multiple revenue flows, excessive work loads & inevitably with that strain a default to repetitiveness in creativity. Which is exactly what happens to anyone who is overworked. Sometimes autopilot is required. But still people can't see KZbin as work, especially if they've never tried it, if they just consume it thoughtlessly it's the same basic thing as people being rude/pushy to anyone in a customer service situation. Now people having preferences for personalities or types of presentation (preferring teaching to gear reviews etc) completely understandable, maybe don't be a dick about it & say someone has a "punchable face" in a public forum. Feeling inundated by how many their are? That's on your algorithm not the channels/creators trying to exist. Want less guitartubers. watch less guitartube. Watch something else, do something else, expand your focus & suddenly a guitar KZbin video that features the phrase "disclaimer: this video is sponsored yadayada blah blah blah, my thoughts are my own I'm just trying to not starve." won't phase you at all. Because you'll know it's just a part of their job.

People get called shills when they promote multiple competing products/brands that they don’t sell or even use themselves. They’re not part of the company, they’re not promoting their own shop and don’t have a stake in the game. Their motivation appears the same as ticket touts - they’re purely there to clip the ticket and make money. Zero warm fuzzies given. Your channel is better because you relate everything you promote to your own reference point - is it a tele, is it like a tele, would I play this instead of a tele, does it make my tele sound better. It’s comes across as much more honest and useful because it’s motivated by your own interest rather than just making money.

He's one of these people in my opinion who went to music school and ultimately wanted to be a successful musician but found KZbin is an easier way. I do not like his content and I don't watch his videos. He is the absolute epitome of clickbait. One thing I can say about him though, he will intentionally make a video not to inform the public but just to get views. Example, is titles will be why this is the best or why people hate this. First off, who said it was the best and who said anybody hated it? That's just stuff he comes up with so in a sense, yes he is spreading false information.

@@HAMMERHEAD-g3h idk about the assessment of his personality or vibe, that's probably just personal preference in who you like to watch or not. He stands above the pack because he does good honest reviews. Doesn't matter who sends the guitar or how much it cost, his review is 100% honest. @iliketrains34953 ай бұрын
r/guitarcirclejerk user here so you may disregard this, but for me the KZbin guitar community is very much a mixed bag and the ratio of ones I enjoy is a minority at this point. Examples of channels I like are Rob Scallon, The Art of Guitar, Paul Davids and (possibly controversial) Rudy Ayoub. A few I can't stand are Steve Terreberry (yeesh), Mike Cole and Bradley Hall and there's a few I used to watch but got way too annoying for me, such as Jared Dines, Mary Spender and Music is Win. I agree with most of the points made - I don't mind sponsorships as a whole unless it's something like Raid Shadow Legends of the notoriously scummy BetterHelp, but it gets excessive when so many of them are pedalling the same product (the Jammy guitar was a pretty bad one, as were the Carbon Fibre guitars). The clickbait has also turned me off quite a few channels - he's not by definition a guitar channel but Rick Beato has fallen from grace in my eyes. The 'solution' I often see is "just don't watch them if you don't like it", which I follow but that's not as easy as it sounds - first of all, the 'Don't recommend channel' function is dogshit and usually doesn't work as I still get recommended the same stuff (it took so long for me to stop seeing Stevie T's stupid thumbnails pop up, I think I had to install a plugin). Secondly, since it's like one mutual community where everyone knows everyone, collabs are omnipresent, which is not something I'm going to gatekeep, but as an example: I watch SamuraiGuitarist, but he's got a series of videos out with Rhett Shull who I strongly dislike - I've exiled myself from Sammy's channel for a few weeks as a result. Overall, the market is oversaturated, many channels are very samey (which is partially to blame for KZbin's algorithm shrinking the variety of content) and many will waffle on for ages to meet the 8 minute additional ad quota instead of actually playing guitar. Also the female guitar market is essentially cornered by girls with minimal talent wearing revealing clothing, but that's not something I'm getting into now.
