@@chompythebeast The statuary in the boss room also suggests someone (or group of someones) of wealth and means lived there. Mounting complex, highly detailed figures high up in the wall means you're hiring an architect and their team of workers plus an artist of renown and their team of workers. Not something your average peasant can do. On a final note the center piece looks to me like a variation on Michelangelo's Pietà in St. Peter's Basilica.
@chompythebeast2 жыл бұрын
@@ladyabaxa Yeah, that's definitely a riff on the Pietà. Bloodborne is full of Christian motifs―the idea of chalices filled with blood being sacred, a powerful church controlling society, the obvious architectural influences, death obsession and resurrection, even Immaculate Conception and a character named Maria who guards the "Original Sin" of the Hunters and the Divine Child, using blood from her womb to do so. And that's all just sort of scratching the obvious. It's strange to me how relatively little people talk about how Bloodborne is essentially taking the divine impregnation/death cult aspect of Christianity (and perhaps Catholicism in particular) to a sort of horrifically logical extreme

This building ALWAYS struck me as odd. For as looming as it is during your trip through the area, all you do is go down into the basement. We could have kept the underground part by just changing a details. When you arrive in the witche's abode, the way to the basement is closed so you have to climb up some stairs and do stuff in the biggass building, maybe meeting an NPC hyping up the fight against the witches because they're a terrifying boss lore wise. Then at some point you get a key to the basement so you go back and *then* the boss fight start. All you need to add is two stairs, one going up and one going down to the basement.

It's because that building once probably belonged to a lesser Cainhurst noble, to whom the peasants of Hemwick were serfs. When the path to Castle Cainhurst became broken and isolated from their landed lords, the increasingly insane Hemwick peasants took over the building and the viziers (the Witches of Hemwick) took it over. The noble may have been Runesmith Caryll, or maybe was a patron to Caryll, but that seems to be what they were after.

Must've been quite the home at some point there at the end of Hemwick Charnel Lane. Looks like what you might call a "manor". The fact that the Cainhurst carriage departs from the road just at the base of the hill there might also speak to a sort of (possibly former) aristocratic presence in this area. Not sure why the Witches took up shop in that space, though. Maybe they ate the rich
@scramblex26922 жыл бұрын
they took up shop there because the hunters needed someone to manufacture bone ash powder from human bones. a "charnel house" is a funeral home. The house is big and was at one point very nice because these women made a lot of money manufacturing arms to fight the beasts. it is my guess that all funerary services were diverted through this one place, and most burial was taking place in the forbidden woods area given the number of graves.
@TheCrewExpendable2 жыл бұрын
@@scramblex2692 Plus it seems to witches have done some "independent research" on the side into the arcane. All the bodies flowing through the place seems to have given them an opportunity to extract eyes of the dead and graft them onto their bodies. They also have some connection with the School of Mensis since you find some of their executioners in the Lane and there are some witches (without eyeballs) in the Gaol trying to cut out your eyes if they grab you.
@Solaire_of_Astora132 жыл бұрын
My headcannon is that the Vileblood needed someone to organize all of their business from land in one building and used the one the witches use now but it was abandoned when the bloodline was ended and the scholars of the old blood took hold of the region. The building is now used by the clan of witches who control Hemwick from it and use to store important resources and prisoners (maybe perform rituals too). The witches are actually allied to other factions by acquiring eyes and weapons for them and the needed magic refinery needed for them to work the way they should while most of them are actually spread throughout the map doing whatever, while some of the matriarchs are left behind guarding them from intruders in the Hunt, which are the ones we fight.

Then it leads you to the laughter of mad people dancing around the fire far below, giving you a hint about the atmosphere of the place. Also I find it neat that when you open up the shortcut gate, it makes a straight path from the Lamp to the boss room. The place is simple but has fundamentals well put.

I've been playing Bloodborne again (like 3 times now, all diff builds) and one thing I'm curious about is in Upper Cathedral Ward. Specifically the window where the Wolf Beast (or Scourge Beast?) breaks in when you get close and leave. The broken window shows the ledge of the balcony where you get Make Contact, but looking at where I believe the window is shows no broken window at all. I'm also curious as to where the beast is hiding to break into the window. I know you can see the beast that hangs from the building in Old Yharnam from pretty high up (just after the crucified BSB if I'm remembering right) so I'm curious if the UCW one out of bounds or just invisible. If you ever get the chance to look into it, that'd be really nifty.

To answer your first point : the exterior of buildings in Bloodborne almost never matches with the interior. This is universal across the game. Even windows you can see through from inside a building are oftentimes walled off, off centre, or completely absent when you get to see the outside of the building. This is either due to an oversight by the devs or to a lack of communication between interior/exterior design teams, but once you are aware of this, it's really hard not to see it...
@michaelmannix16042 жыл бұрын
I always kind of wished the boss fight necessitated us to search multiple rooms throughout the building, kind of like a simpler version of Micolash's fight. At least then the Mad Ones would feel a bit more intimidating if they could potentially corner you in close quarters. That said, it's always been intriguing to me how the geography of Hemwick matches up with the Fishing Hamlet's. The Witch's Abode in particular is strangely similar to the huge, fortress-like structure housing the snail women. Aside from that, I suppose Hemwick was governed by Cainhurst in a previous era, but had long since fallen into chaos... It's a neat area that I wish felt a little more like a world of its own, rather than a sidequest to acquire the Rune Workshop Tool.

Also weirdly the ship sails or flags in Nightmare Frontier kinda bug out and start spinning for some reason when I've played, idk if others got that to happen. And the second request is in the Hunter's Nightmare, before you get the Whirlygig Saw a random snail woman falls from the sky, and Im always have been curious if it actually fell from a spot that would make sense like the area where they reside, least close to the caves or in the Fishing Hamlet, or just a random spot out of bounds that From Software wouldn't think people would look into. @alyseleem2692 Жыл бұрын
I do believe the place has a bigger lore connection to other areas, though. Think about it. The bridge to Cainhurst was destroyed. Why is that? It's pretty much the only connection the castle has to proper land. What happened? Well, look at the boss arena. It's a basement, but a very big one. Lots of statues,too, depicting the sick and dying, as well as a man lying on a woman's lap.... This place used to be for preaching, it seems. And whatever they preached was likely not for the ears of certain folk up top. The people of Hemwick live off producing Bone Marrow Ash, which is used by those possessing weak Bloodtinge. In contrast, the Vilebloods generally possess weaponry and tools that require high Bloodtinge and Skill. Indeed, one of them caught with this powder would be a disgrace to the organisation..... And yet, by the time we come, it's known to be mass-produced there. What do you think was being preached in that basement? And tobwhat audience? Because if I'm thinking correctly, this might be one of those spots where the Church was in it's infancy. A small, fringe cult on the run, giving out sermons and miracle cures to the common folk. What could go wrong?
@MitridatedCarbon2 жыл бұрын
It kinda reminds me of a run down version of the spider room in mensis, plus the crying woman's statue reminds me of kos, or it may be an allegory for "every great one loses its child". it could be an old Pthumerian cathedral during a time Cainhurst had more power and more influence, before the arrival of the church. or maybe Hemwick was where the Fishing hamlet once stood, the abode was once where they would harvest slugs and phantasms, but with the arrival of Byrgenwerth, it all had been repurposed for body harvesting, which in turn influenced modern Hemwick, explaining the strange statue at the beginning with its webbed fingers, the vicinity to water, the women being the main authority and workforce, etc.

At 0:08, one of the mid section towers left of the decrepit ceiling is the one I'm talking about, and I think you can see one loop of the higher "unit" doing the animation. The lower one is almost unnoticeable here. Based on this video, it definitely looks like patches of grass, but like it's doing a flag animation or something. Really weird.

Yeah I also thought this building was a bit odd. I remember looking up at it and thinking "man, I wish we could've explored the whole house before fighting the witch boss". Would've been a cool little haunted house dungeon kind of place to set up the boss.

There’s an area in DS3 that I’ve been interested in for a while now. There’s a room with a Lycanthrope in the ruins of the road of sacrifice swamp is with the crabs. If you look at the textures used in the water the building reflected doesn’t match to the ruins themselves. Likely just different textures or assets used, but it almost looks like it was supposed to be a different building or something. Could likely be nothing but just something I noticed.

This building used to drive me crazy in my first playtrough. I didn't know how to travel to Cairnhust (I managed to systematicaly dodge the "station" In every of my Hemwick visits). I was so desperate I looked at every oob visual detail to find a way and I couldn't pass over the fact this building seemed way to big for what it is. Plus it is exatly align with the broken brigde leading to the castle. But no obviously the way to Cairnhust is "by the sea"

I hope they would have made that unused mansion into multi-storied maze where multiple Mad Ones are constantly chasing and hunting you throughout the narrow confines of labyrinthine passages, witches cackling from the shadows and vanishing, until you stumble to the main hall and can engage them without the confusing lay-out. Would have made the promising bossfight and great area that much more memorable.

Most buildings in videogames are larger than their interiors often are. I'll go off talking about Doom again but the most comical case of this I've ever seen is the Colosseum in Doom Eternal. If you look at the building from above you can see the boss arena within it and it's so damn tiny compared to the actual thing, though if you're in the room it appears as though that's the arena and there's seats all around it despite the whole room being just a small circle inside the massive building

If you designed solely for play-space, your world is a lego set. It's like whining why Anor Londo is a full castle city, but you explore ONE section.
@dracses45292 жыл бұрын
The things unseen has been a huge part of gaming mysteries/wonder for a long time though, but I like that a lot of times you don't get to see things like the other parts of Anor Londo. One of the non-Dark Souls related ones to me is from Halo 2 actually. You go to the city-ship High Charity and walk through tons of different sections in what one could assume are the political wing of the city, but I always wondered what a residential or market area would look like. In Bloodborne we thankfully get to see tons of Yharnam, but I'll always crave for more! XD

they are masters of designing very large structures that manage to not have entrances to the rest of the building. lol. like i dont recall there being any extra doors that were blocked off on the inside of the building.

Hey Zullie, great stuff as usual. Can you do one where from the Bridge leading to Gascoigne, you show the Bloodstarved beast arena that's below? I'd assume BSD is not there, but still it'd be interesting to see what's actually there. Thanks! (I hope you have done this one already, AFAIK you haven't)

Seeing all the peasants and bodies near and in that manor brings me the idea that the manor might've once been tied to some kind of royalty long ago, then was left abandoned, and then repurposed by the nearby population. The large size could imply many rooms, in which blood ministration might have happened, or the beast plague or ashen blood was treated by methods less medical and more apothecarian.
@LovelessDogg12 жыл бұрын
The alpha map files for the abode have a balcony on the back of the building, where you would jump from to access the nightmare for the first time. This building used to be the starting area and act as the hub in the earliest draft of the game and it also be the area you would return to in order to reach the endgame.

I've never seen a video about that, can I find that somewhere?
@LovelessDogg12 жыл бұрын
@@HighPriestFuneral hmm, well. I can’t point to any video specifically, but SinclairLore on KZbin has a series of podcasts and livestreams where they talk about and show off cut content and older builds of the souls games. They show off Raw Map data for Bloodborne on one stream, and on another talk about an old hand drawn map that was shown off at an art gallery in France. On that old concept map, The Witch’s Abode is labeled “Place of Origin” in Japanese, which just means it’s the starting area of the game. There’s a ton more like that on that channel. So, check it out I suppose. 😅

I've always been curious about that Zullie. All of those church details and unique designs to just be wasted like that... what a shame. I don't know if you do requests, but may I ask what the area above Ebrietas' room looks like? To me it's always looked like a dilapidated wooden structure ready to give way, but from a geographic standpoint I think it would be the furthest part of that direction on the map.
@rareroe3052 жыл бұрын
While you're looking at Hemick Charnal Lane, if I remember right there's a sort of highway you can see in the first couple areas, up and to the left if you're going from the lamp towards the boss. It'd be interesting to see if they line up with anything, like the bridge to Cainhurst. Knowing From, it probably does something like that.

It's like asking why buildings are so big in Yharnam. They look big on the outside but you don't get to explore them or you don't get to explore them fully. Same here, you just don't get to explore the upper floors of the building.

Have you done a big zoom out of Yharnam? I'm very curios as to how the map design looks like from above.

I might as well throw it out there: I believe the boss arena used to be preached at by the early church. The fact that it's in a wide basement indicates it was, at least at some point, a secret. Others have indicated the sleeping man statue looks like Laurence.
@-Lemv2 жыл бұрын
Yeah,this building looks... weirdly small for what seems a castle/maison .Like you just go to the entrance but it only leads to the boss arena,there is no second floor for what seems like a big building with a lot of rooms on the outside. In my playthouths in this area I was wondered about that
