Shane, I don’t know if you realize how many people you are helping just by existing ✨ That’s not something everyone can say. But you can. The mere fact of you existing is helping everyone, it’s kind of cool. Thank you!

By far the best podcast of yours. I am disabled and also a dwarf so I get approached with questions too. Most of the questions are from children which I love. Rudeness to people who are different stems from being uneducated about what makes them the way they are. Children need to be taught early on that we are all the same because we are all different. I encourage the questions especially when I notice the mom whispering…”shhhhh and don’t stare”. That’s when I am excited to talk to the child so they aren’t thinking that people who are different are scary and not approachable. I’m in Minnesota also. I live pretty close to the Mall of America. I love you guys and I want to thank you for helping me be ok with who I am.

I learned so much reading this comment honestly. Thank you. I’ve always just felt a tinge of awkwardness and not really knowing how to approach each individual person out of not wanting to upset anyone. Not that I would be going up randomly. But I’ve definitely felt the whole like don’t stare etc. and nobody wants that feeling. Great comment, thank you.

I don't have SMA but I've been disabled for 3-4 years now and I want to say I'm also proud of you for being proud. I know I'm nowhere close to that goal, but it's good to remind myself it is possible. Good job to everyone who has learned to love and accept themselves. It's definitely not easy.

You definitely helped advance his self acceptance and self image, and are a loving wife and caretaker. I know you say it's natural and no biggie to you, but as I'm sure you know, most people are not capable of even comprehending that, let alone doing it! Coming off the back of disability pride month.... The big thing I had to learn myself many years ago was that pride doesn't mean that we have to pretend that we love absolutely every aspect of the impact of our disability. Pride is about learning to love yourself for who you are, including the disability and realising that it shouldn't be something that you're ashamed of. Disability isn't something that should be pitied, felt of or treated as though it somehow makes you less than others or completely backwards ideas like the old idea that disability was somehow punishment for some terrible act that a past family member (or depending on the culture, perhaps yourself in a past life) had committed and this is somehow Karma. Pride is seeing all that nonsense for what it is and loving yourself for all of who you are in spite of the challenges even if on a practical level you don't have to love every impact or implication of your disability each and every day.

I have a 9 year old son with a disability and getting him through school with an IEP that meets his needs and allows him to thrive in school has been a nightmare. We (my son, husband and myself) tell the IEP team what he needs and the vast majority of the time they tell me "that is not how we do things" This summer I have felt defeated and have started to think maybe we really are wrong. The fact that you told your school "this is how it will be done", or whatever, has given me encouragement to stick to our guns. It was a simple comment on your part but thanks for sharing it. I have good feeling your comment will make a big difference in my son's school life.

Definitely agree, keep fighting. I’ve spent 21 years working in & out of the school system, school employees will lie & manipulate in IEPs, & cut needed therapies & one to one aides all because of money/budget cuts not based on the student’s needs or goals. If you can hire an advocate to accompany you at these IEPs and ask to have them recorded, it could be helpful. 💞🙏🏼

My daughter was born with Down syndrome and honestly I get perturbed when people give her pity wins. She can earn her own successes! Stop doing that!!!! And I also get kind of growly when people categorize her with all people with Down syndrome. Things like, "they are so happy all the time." Please, live with her a full week. She is not happy all the time. She has normal emotions and behaviors that all young women her age do. I think we are all learning with having someone different in our lives that it's just different. To take each person, one at a time and accept them where and who they are. Culture, abilities, disability, personality, likes, dislikes, quirks and faults. Every person you meet has value. Every person you meet will bless you if you give it a minute. It will not be what you are always used to but just maybe, that is a good thing. Stay open to people where ever they are. It's an amazing life! PS Some of my best conversations have come from my girls theater pals who are autistic. I cherish those chats and seek them out when I can. Love you Shane and Hannah!

I thought about this for awhile and when I was 17 years old ( i have been disabled since I was 16 months old) i realized that I enjoy who i am and of course I wish i had the use of both arms and legs, but if i didn't have my disability at all would i still be me? Would my sence of humor be different? Would my out look of my life be different? It might, but I like who i am, the way I am. I don't want to change me. I just don't appreciate the people who make fun of me or bully me. It's not right for anyone to do that to anyone.I have people come up to me and say "I will pray for you" or they ask me on the spot do you mind if "I say a prayer for you now? With you ? Or i get"Wow, look at you, you can do that "? " You do so well even though you have a disability ". I love you Shane and Hannah you guys are great! I love both of your sence of humor. Thank you so much for this video. Keep up the great work you are doing to spread the word about SMA. Looking forward to seeing your next podcast. Sending love ❤️❤️ and Big hugs 🤗🤗 to you both

Bingo made me very happy! I was born with dystonia and essential tremor. The questions I most often get are, "Are you ok??" "You're a very nervous person. Calm down." (More of a statement, really.) And the winner is, "Are you drunk?' I get that one ALL the time, especially when my lower spine decides that I will suddenly, out in public, have to be a walking 90 degree right angle. My son often has to tell the police that "I was just born that way" (in some ways I envy the signifier that is a wheel chair😊) because the police very rarely believe me or my son. I just like to tell people, "You know the actress Katherine Hepburn? I'm like her, just not as elegant, or self possessed (except for "in my mind") 😅.

I think this is a wonderful video…as a 52 year old woman who was born with cerebral palsy and diagnosed with epilepsy at 15 years old I’ve spent my life dealing with all the same issues. I’m proud of I am because I grew up with parents who were very supportive and then, married my fully able husband over 28 years ago who is absolutely amazing. We also were blessed and have 2 children in their 20’s who are fully able. Our daughter just graduated with her masters degree in occupational therapy and says that growing up in our family dynamic was her inspiration to help others who are disabled ❤ God Bless you both for creating this channel to spread awareness about your disability as well as disabilities in general 🙏

About the concept of ”perks” bc of disabilities… I have epilepsy, and this gives me the option to cut down my workload from 100% to 85% because fatigue increases the risk for seizures. I also don’t have to work nights, for the same reason. And those are definately perks (I work as a nurse in a suuuper stressful setting) but I mean the NON-perks are that I at any time (anywhere) loose consiousness, pee myself, bite my tongue bloody and hit my head😅

If I am praying for someone (regardless of who they are or what their life looks like), it is that they would feel God's presence and know Him personally and allow themselves to be fully known and loved. That is my version of a miracle - but if someone asks me to pray for healing (mental, emotional, physical, spiritual... it does not matter), of course I will because they have opened up their heart and the vulnerability they have shared is a gift. It is a privilege to pray for others, and it is a way for me to put an action behind my words when I say that I am thinking about them. It is not pity. It is genuine love and concern. Some people think when you pray the answer is a yes or no sort of deal, but I have not found that to be the case. Either your situation changes or your perspective. Sometimes both. ❤❤ I am sorry for the times you have felt belittled when someone says they are praying for you. Some people do it out of pity, others pride. Just know it is not a reflection of God or His character. We often let the people who claim to represent God form our view of Him, but when God sent His Son Jesus to earth the religious/"church people" are the ones who killed Him. Saying you are a Christian or that you go to church does not matter if you do not allow Him to change your heart. To be a true representative of Jesus is to give of yourself without reserve even if you receive nothing in return. 😊

As someone living with a disability I totally understand how you describe it at the beginning of the video.

Hi, I have asked questions before. I have a son with cerebral palsy. Did you have rods put in your back? That when he lost control of his hands. When he was in school, teachers were surprised how he always went to get in whatever the kids were doing. Teachers would remark how he would get his hands into what they were doing.

As an electric wheelchair user myself, when somebody says "Do you have a license for that." (too often) I just say, "Nope, I stole it." Also one time a couple of children asked me what happened to me and my then caregiver told them an elephant sat on me; the poor kids were agast and were like, "whoah omg!". I felt sorry for them going back to their parents and emphatically stating that they met some poor person in a wheelchair who had been sat on by an elephant! rofl As a disabled person sometimes you just have to laugh. 😂

I just found this out and thought that since you live in Minnesota, land of Minnesota Twins and the late Harmon Killebrew, you may be interested. “Harmon’s later years were spent raising funds for charitable organizations. Harmon and Nita established the Harmon Killebrew Foundation to raise funds for other 501(c) 3’s in honor of his mother who reminded him frequently “we are here to help each other son!” Harmon’s foundation now has established the Harmon Killebrew Legacy Program to raise funds to build Miracle League Fields for physically disadvantaged children in Payette, ID, Phoenix, AZ, Minneapolis, MN and Washington D.C. as well as scholarship programs for Payette High School athletes.”

I have been wanting to buy all of your books but just haven't gotten around to it. What a perfect time/month to actually buy them. By the end of the month, I will own every book you've written. ✨️
