You see for me Jacob was never an option, he was the gum at the bottom of your shoe that refuses to get off, he's something that is there for so long that you start feeling OK about it. This is especially evident in the books As Bella said in the end "It's always been him". Jacob NEVER had a chance with her, it's his insistence that causes any relationship with her if it was up to Bella nothing would've happened. The storyline of Bella/Edward is fully toxic, that's been the argument since the books first came out in 2005. But it's the unending love Bella has for Edward and Edward insistence to not exist without Bella there, that is the core of the whole series. You cannot have the twilight movies/books without that.

In mild defense of Edward's toxic tendencies, he hasn't had personal growth because he literally CAN'T. Vampires are frozen mentally at the age they are turned. He forever will function mentally like a seventeen year old boy. He is ABSOLUTELY toxic at times, but it's not because he refuses to change. It's because everyone was a little toxic at seventeen, but his brain will never develop beyond that. He will never be fully mentally developed to adulthood, and therefore cannot function on an adult level mentally.
