Here in Europe we're used to these books having all sorts of titles... since after, all besides the title and the instructions page (which I never noticed as a child anyway); theres basically no text, so it's one of those books that you can buy in any language while on holiday. It isn't the algorithm changing necessarily it is the audience changing. The algorithm just shows viewers what keeps them on platform. The algorithm doesn't just decide short videos are better, it notices that when it gives you a long video you are more likely to leave the platform, so it stops showing you long videos. If you want the algorithm to show you longer videos all you have to do is watch longer videos, and leave youtube whenever it shows you a short video.

That was what clued me in that the picture had to be for visitors. If the art is there for actually being looked at, it couldn't be for the owner (who'd have found Wally years ago) but for others. On medical procedure distractions: in the 00s I was a frequent visitor to Great Ormond Street's new MRI, which had the ability to show patients videos as a distraction. This initially sounds quite promising...except what it actually meant was a tiny mirror on the head clamp thingy lined up with a tv screen outside the scanner, with audio piped down the headphones. As I am both partially sighted and short sighted, and the headphones by definition could not contain any metal parts and had to contend with the sound of the scanner (think a rave in a bag of spanners), what this left me with was less "Finding Nemo" and more coloured blobs with intermittently audible whale song.

My dentist has a TV on the ceiling. So does my son's pediatric dentist. And the main kids emergency room in town has a TV on the wall of at least the room we went in to do stitches. I probably am one of the strange ones who spends their time in the dentists office tracking what they are doing and how they are doing it without visual information (I also look at my xrays and stuff when they are out of the room to see if I can spot any issues using untrained eyes). I also occasionally makes mental note of any relevant science/news/technology articles I've read to get a professionals opinion. I have wondered however if the general idle chit-chat between doctor and hygienist while working over a patients mouth is a trained skill, practiced skill, or just organically grown method of relieving patient tension. Because physiologically all people have a natural tendency to listen in on conversations between strangers, and thus provide a distraction for the mind.
