The title is clearly clickbait, but the vid overall isn't really saying water cooling is better. Water cooling CAN be better if you want less weight applied to your MB or want less space taken up compared to a large air cooler. But otherwise, it's known that good air-coolers beat out AIOs and custom loops price per dollar
@ordoordo89175 жыл бұрын

There are 3 parts to cooling a device: 1) removing the heat from the device 2) moving the heat carrying medium around 3) removing the heat from whatever takes care of 1) and 2) Liquid coolers are very good at 2) and 3), being easily able to utilize several thick radiators they can easily keep the medium just a few degrees above ambient. But they suck balls at 1). Air coolers, or more precisely high end heatpipe coolers, on the other hand, are awesome at 1), but with limited space to dissipate it in place, and prohibitive cost to move it around, they suck at 2) and 3). The guy, who invents flexible enough, durable enough, cheap enough heatpipes to utilize case mounted radiators, is going to be rich (NOT the same radiators that we use for liquid, although that would be awesome too). Also, the end result: It depends. As it is Water can graciously take care of much more heat than air, but air can be more effective for more down to earth use cases.

High end air coolers are quieter and simpler than custom liquid cooling, and even AIOs. The only genuine downside is if you move your computer around the heavy heatsink can be problematic, but if you don't move your computer, then the air cooler is the premium experience.
@theunboxingexperience34805 жыл бұрын
@@aaaman7 As mentioned by Linus, there are actually air coolers like the Noctua NH-D15 that perform better than many water coolers and even though it's relatively more expensive than the other air coolers out there, it's about the same price as an AIO. On top of that, it is so much easier to tell if the fans of the air cooler are spoiling as compared to the pump of an AIO, which brings me to the third point. An AIO, with an additional pump (on top of the fans that are connected to the radiator), has more components that are subjected to wear and tear and failure. Bonus point: It is cheaper owning an air cooler like the Noctua NH-D15 than an AIO in the long run as all you have to replace on an air cooler are the fans when they eventually spoil but you'll have to practically replace the entire AIO when the AIO fails to work. So that's 4 reasons why I would much rather have bought an air cooler than an AIO. Hope it helps you understand.

Water cooling is not better because better is a relative concept and encompasses various domains other than performance. I prefer longevity, safety and low cost over a few more mhz. @@MichaelBerthelsen It doesn't change the results at all it just shows that they were flawed. Like Linus said in this video water and the other liquids used in liquid cooling have a much higher thermal capacity than the metals used in air coolers. The only way an air cooler could actually have a higher thermal capacity than a water cooler is if it was of higher quality. I think that explains why Linus's team got the results that they did in their previous video.
@MichaelBerthelsen5 жыл бұрын
@@jordanski5421 They used quality air coolers and quality water coolers in the test. Neither cooling SYSTEM has a higher or lower heat capacity. The water has a higher heat capacity, which means it heats up more slowly. But if you're removing enough heat (in watts) using the quality air cooler, having a water cooler won't make a lick of difference. It may slow down the rise to max temp., but it'll reach the same max temp as air over a period of an hour or so. And I doubt most people use their PC's for only an hour at a time before letting it cool down to ambient.

If you live in a hotter area where ambient temperatures can get pretty warm even with AC going having a Water cooled non over clocked system can actually help to prevent the system from creating extra waste heat due to how efficient the water is at controlling the temperatures - the fans don't need to consume the extra power necessary to spin faster for your system.

Noctua NH DH-15 and you don't ever have to buy a new cooler. It works eternity, it cools better than most AIO water coolers, it has lower noise, it won't leak, and having the best air cooler allows your CPU to use less energy. This saves you money, allows better overclocking, allows longer life for the CPU, Motherboard and PSU. Air cooling also cools down RAM and components that deliver power to your CPU. I had really expensive custom loop, but then my pump crashed and I either had to wait for a two weeks or buy air cooler at the same day. I bought the Noctua NH DH-15 and I was stunned at it's performance. It's really worth the money in the long run. Water cooling really isn't. Also you should buy really high quality PSU. Water is an intermediary step between the air and the hot heatsink copper. The specific heat capacity of copper is 0.385 J/g°C while water is 4.179 J/g°C The density of copper is 8960 kg/m³ while water is 997 kg/m³ If my math is any good that means that water holds about 1.2 times more heat in the same volume of space than copper. Perhaps more importantly water is easy to spread out over a larger surface area of a multi fan radiator than designing a combination of heat pipes and fin stacks that's efficient both thermally and in space requirements. Worth mentioning. Air density is roughly 1.2 kg/m³ water has 830 times more mass than the same volume of air. When it comes to specific heat capacity air is 1.01 J/g°C or about 4 times less than water. So water can act as a very easy to use buffer to store up the heat from spikes of high wattage, doing the same with just copper, aluminium and heat pipes is much harder and typically results in more bursty high RPM work for the fans. Aluminum heat capacity is 0.902 J/g°C and density is 2700 kg/m3 which I think results in roughly 1.7 times less heat capacity per unit of volume than water.

Water cooling it's better if you download more RAM, CPU and graphics. If not, stick to your potato mayonnaise regular cooling system.

Modern air coolers have heat pipes with liquid in them. So, they are in fact partially liquid coolers as well. The difference is that heat pipes cannot be extended or bent so that you can place the large flat radiator on the right place in the case.

I used to be a big proponent of liquid cooling back in the late 90s and early 2000s... but that has since changed because there's just not enough real performance gain from overclocking anymore and modern air coolers are just too convenient... maintenance is REQUIRED with any liquid cooled solution... and it's usually a bitch... But i'm also not a fan of flashy builds and my tower still has no glass panel so i don't care what it looks like inside.

So, I think there is another advantage of AIO/Custom loops: Even if a water cooled system gets a few degrees hotter after hours of gaming, it will take a loooong time to reach maximum temps. And also it doesen't reach low temps very/super fast after ending a demanding task (like gaming). This allows the components to expand and contract much slower and therefore more gentle. The expansion/contraction cycles are not as abrupt as with an air cooler, which dissipates it's heat very fast, due to it's direct cooling of the heatsink. I think this might be more gentle to the solder, thermal paste and ultimately the components as a whole. Please prove me wrong.

Nothing beats a nice custom watercooling loop. The longevity beats almost everything else and you can use it for almost every computer in the future.

The heat capacity thing is also why summer works the way it works in coastal countries like my own (Nights are warmer near the end of summer due to the surrounding oceans being heated)... or so ive been told.

I am a gamer But I do not overclock and I use watercooling and here is my reasoning on it: I worked in Quality control at Philips Electronics for years, one test was the lifespan test, How do we know a device will last for 10 years in only 1 year? Well we make use of a physics law that is so easy they will not teach you this in schools or universities, the law is simple, heat up anything for 10 degrees celsius and every Physical and chemical process will speed up by a factor of 2, so we tested these devices in huge walk in ovens that where like a dry sauna at 80 degrees Celsius, that is like an average of 50 degrees, or 5 times 10 degrees or 5 times 2 the normal physical speed of lifetime, in most countries during the summer days meaning 1 year is actually 10 years. So when someone explained it to me I asked, does this also work in reverse? Like 10 degrees colder makes my lifespan 2 times longer and it turns out it does, which resulted in my 10 year old PC, still performing at high speeds way after the intended 5 years most things last.

Okay there is a few things here, he was comparing a NH-D15 to a 120mm AIO. Most will never recommend a 120mm AIO including myself the radiator is just too small on them to be worth it. The NH-D15 is the best air cooler out there and it stands up with 240mm rads. It takes the massive 360mm AIO's to straight beat it like the NZXT x72. So it typically goes like this: (extreme OC solutions) Direct application LHe > Direct application LN2 > Direct application CO2 > Phase Change > Peltier (Termoelectric cooling) behind a custom loop > (normal solutions) Custom loop > 360mm AIO > 240mm AIO / NH-D15 > 120mm AIO / Other sinks like Evo212 > Garbage coolers like Wraith or Intel stock. Overall water is better than air cooling as water has much higher thermal density. This is the reason why many things from most car engines to nuclear power plants go the water route for cooling. One huge advantage of a radiator is literally carrying the heat away from the system.
