Why Isn't GEN-X Dominating YouTube?

Generation X is infamous for our survivability and ability to make something from nothing.
Support GEN-X KZbinrs & Subscribe!
It's amazing to me that KZbin does not have more older content creators like those of us from Generation X. We are in our 40's and 50's now and have earned the right to speak up and share some of that hard earned wisdom.
And what's more - we do it with no filters! We will tell you like it is and not sugar coat it. Something that the world desperately needs these days. Gen-X'ers are not "Safe Space" people. We take risks and care not if we offend.
Why?
Because we know what we are telling you is true, good, and right. It's really that simple. So why is it that there aren't more of us on KZbin? If I could answer that then this video would be a lot more interesting. Since I can't then I'll just complain for a hot second and then get on with what needs to be done. And that is creating more content!
Inspiration for this video is thanks to ‪@AlexaSaarenoja‬

TOTALLY get that fear! Though my day job is in IT I still have to be very "aware" of not letting something slip. I'll wager you know exactly what I'm talking about from the sounds of it. But hey, nobody will every see what ends up on the cutting room floor. So why not go for it? That's my theory anyway. yeah, this is my fear too. when I get together with my buddies around the fire and we're just talking and roasting each other... I often sit back and think, "I'm so grateful that no one is recording"...'cause we would all be fired, cancelled and shamed...not because of what we talk about, but because of how we talk. we still roast and rag on each other using language and words that are, now, banned, or considered "dog-whistles", that would get us labelled... then I think I gotta censor my speech, and watch whose toes I tread on... and... and... and... then I think "Fuck it! the kids don't wanna hear what we gotta say anyway (it's mostly them on the tubes), so, why bother?" Then, suddenly, it don't seem like a fun idea anymore... and I would only be doing it for to have fun. but when I'm having fun with my mates... I'm not walking on eggshells... watching my every word. For me... this is the biggest hurdle.

IMO, Gen X grew up as consumers of content and not creators of it. The inverse is Gen Z talking on the telephone. They’d rather FaceTime. There is also an element of vanity. We are older and don’t really like seeing ourselves on camera or in pictures. Juxtapose that with growing up in the selfie culture. Also, there is no guarantee people will watch and I’m too busy to do that as a hobby. I like the idea of it but it doesn’t override the implementation effort. Lastly, I think in a way we are just too grounded. What I mean is that we know we aren’t experts in anything and since we didn’t grow up with it we cannot really grasp why our opinion on things really matters to the masses. It’s easier just to tweet something. Just my $.02.

Oh, man - PREACH in regards to not liking how we don't like seeing ourselves on camera! I'm on the struggle bus for sure when it comes to that. It's honestly why I love podcasting more and view KZbin as more supplemental content. But I disagree on the "we are not experts" part. I mean, we have some hard-earned knowledge from living a life prior to the internet and social media that I believe the younger generation (my kids especially!) could benefit from. Trouble is - our kids don't listen to what WE say - but if someone on KZbin says the exact same thing? Oh, man - it's GOSPEL! LOL Thank you so much for the $.02! Millennial here 😂: 1985 - Not going for the generational war, but the mindset in most GenX is that someone else is doing it, I don’t need to. It’s the same with Millennials and voting in the U.S. they expect everyone else has the same views and there is no need to say it again or affirm. I’m starting my KZbin with the same idea in mind; get people from our generation to talk about their hobbies, or something on KZbin. Gen-X isn't dominating KZbin because, collectively as a generation, they 'missed the boat' on it. The absolute earliest OGs on KZbin who laid the groundwork for the platform *were* either Gen X or "Xenials" but KZbin became a thing in 2006 and, again collectively following statistical trends, older generations tend to have slower uptake and adoption of new things. Platform 'domination' on KZbin comes from 'seniority' somewhat like how an airline works- you had to be there at the beginning or close to it to be dominant as a collective group because large channels get fairly entrenched and are hard to beat, so when the platform started to grow it was mostly millennial aged people exploring the space. There *are* exceptions but they are relatively rare- exceptionally rare if you count all the channels on the platform posting videos. There is still *space* for Gen-X on YT, there are more than a few Gen-Xers who are pretty big on the platform, but you won't see true dominance on the platform without having been there en-masse at the ground level. Heck even the current #1 channel Mr. Beast started in 2012 which was right around the time it was really taking off and businesses had just started to take their first real 'serious' looks at the platform, beyond their initial exploratory efforts. Breaking out into YT is difficult, exceptionally difficult, and the platform prioritizes engagement and watch time. The primary audience for YT also skews younger- you would likely need more Gen-X on the platform to get more people to watch Gen-X, people tend to relate most to those of their own rough age and those who are similar in age can understand what they are likely to want to watch. That's a trend we've seen on the platform- the established millennial-age creators have had to keep in touch with the culture of the younger generations in order to stay super relevant, but since they were already established and were in fact *part* of establishing that culture it is much easier. You may take some solace however in the fact that on the internet as a whole "saying it as it is" in spaces like YT has become the norm in vast swathes of circles and there is a fairly large cultural push for being more honest and open with eachother. ...That *has* lead to perhaps oversharing in more than a few cases, but it's likely to correct itself over time. In online spaces people have never really cared if they have offended- there have been very popular channels focusing on everything from being honest on hot topics all the way to those specifically intended to showcase offending others on purpose. That's a large part of the reason why swearing isn't considered a taboo online, especially YT, and people have traditionally seen it as quite weird to censor themselves. There aren't really any Gen-X specific opinions I can think of that YT as a platform would try and censor. People on the platform share a very broad spectrum of opinions and Gen-X is not a monolith and share as diverse a range of opinions as any other generations- it is very likely not a generational issue. It *is* true that online platforms, generally, have taken the stance that advocating for the non-existance or non acceptance of people wanting to live however makes them happy is bad for business and so that's often unwelcome. It's also true that a lack of acceptance does seem to scale with age, though it is improving rapidly. It's also quite likely to be true that your perception of 'woke-ness' has been really heavily skewed ironically by mainstream media, in a way that just doesn't happen on YT. It's really simple in most online spaces: "Let people live their lives and be happy as long as it doesn't affect anyone else" and "don't be hateful" is the generally accepted default stance to take in most online spaces. Yes it's true you can absolutely find people going off the rails with wanting you to 'say the right things' (especially somewhere like twitter/X where people are notoriously rabid) but if you look arround YT as a platform even on 'controversial' topics it will mostly just be people talking about how they want to live their life and be happy/want others to do the same, and the paltform really is a great place to see that side of people. Lastly, something to keep in mind is that there really is not as much difference between the generations as media in general tries to portray. We have documentation of older generations complaining about younger ones going back literally millennia and the complaints sound *exactly* the same as the ones today just dressed in the circumstances of their time. Different generations are just at different stages of life and that's what has the most impact out of anything, particularly how everyone sees eachother and what is affecting them. This is something that is likely to improve at least 'feeling-wise' with time as with the rise of social media a lot of the similarities seemed to vanish since the places people interacted were so different and changed so rapidly. As it's become the norm and as society as a whole continues to develop how social media fits into life you will likely start to see more of a 'coming together' effect again, at least on a personal level if not on a content creator level. Maybe you've seen it yourself but I've seen more than a few Gen-Xers recently start use TikTok (which I personally loathe) just the same way as the youngest people using it do, and as much as I personally dislike the platform it's undeniable that because there's similarity there now it's going to be easier to relate to one-another again now that there's been a 'catch up'.

I sincerely hope you have or will subscribe to my channel and keep making comments like this. I have already saved your user name as one to look for in future video comments section. QUOTE: " It's really simple in most online spaces: "Let people live their lives and be happy as long as it doesn't affect anyone else" and "don't be hateful" is the generally accepted default stance to take in most online spaces." This is one of my core beliefs when it comes to sharing opinions anywhere - be it KZbin, my Podcast, my Blog or anywhere else in conversation. I simply want to be able to give my opinion unfiltered and unedited. I undoubtedly will have strong opinions in future videos, but my desire is not to offend or belittle anyone else. I simply want to be able to speak my mind and respect the rights of others to agree, disagree or scroll on by. I am banking on your observation that there is plenty of room for Gen-X on KZbin and that I can find an audience. I think I may have done exactly that, but only time will tell if my content continues to get this level of attention. Again, a HUGE "Thank You!" for your time and consideration and I truly hope to see you in the future commenting on other videos.

Honestly, it is seeking Immortality through something I create that drives me. It has since I was a kid. I was always fascinated that we read books, plays, stories, and such from people who lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. It's why I wanted to be a writer all the way back to grade school. I wanted to write something so profound and meaningful that people hundreds of years after I'm gone would still be reading it. Would still be talking about it. Would still be applying it to their lives. I still have dreams and hopes of that happening. it's why I started blogging and that eventually lead to podcasting which has now led me here. Podcasts, KZbin Videos, Blogs, and books - they are all the same thing, just different mediums. Some have existed longer than others, but they are the same none the less.

Gen X, too young for Facepage Boomers but too old for millennialal Youpoopers and Gen Z Tik-Fockers. There may not be a lot of Gen Xers making Youpoops compared to millennials, but some of the biggest names and voices are GenX. Joe Roegan and Tucker Carlson come to mind. If you spend more time thinking about it you will see a lot more. Most of the science and tech channels I subscribe too are Gen X Youpoopers and I'm a millennial. Stuff that's purely entertainment driven, music, art, comedy is going to be younger people because creativity peaks long before age 30 for the vast majority of people. Things that require careful study and experience are going to be dominated by the middle aged. Once you are over the hill you just rant and rave about anything and your old age and mental decline just becomes entertainment for the younger masses. 😂

Others that come to mind are the likes of Robin Williams, Arianna Huffington, Vera Wang, Giorgio Armani, and Morgan Freeman. I tend to think that if you are a creative and you continue to create then that helps keep you relatively young. Eh, I figure my kids laugh at me anyway - why not the younger masses too? ;)~

Because Gen X aren't a bunch of posers. We didn't like it when some musicians sold out and appeared in jeans commercials or whatever. It's frustrating enough being a youtube viewer. I get recommended great channels that get banned a few months later. I'm really enjoying the gen x content here now, but I don't expect it to be here in a year. Then it will be back to math and astronomy channels, since those are the only ones I like and are able to stay up. Thought about making a channel about advanced data structures and algorithms. I don't want to spend months learning animation software only to get banned because binary decision diagrams or the stable marriage algorithm is homophobic. Gen X has a lot to teach, but youtube, as it is now, is not the right medium. KZbin rewards content creators who upload a steady stream of videos daily or every couple days. That limits us to doing 'hang out' or witty monologue videos for short term entertainment, to be forgotten amidst a stream of other videos.

Tons of free software out there to edit it, but I have an Adobe Cloud subscription for my podcast production so I just used Premiere Pro and am starting to dabble in that more to try and make better videos. We'll see how the KZbin algorithm decides to treat me as the days and weeks pass. I pray that it is kind and I can see my channel grow and find more people like you to have conversations with.

But I see what you're saying about our generation of GenX, but they think that we were the problems of the world and they're better than we were even though they have no fricking clue. I look at many of them and see them faking to be us. Like music, watching kids try to mimic our faces when we play as if that makes them better. What they didn't know is, we didn't force those faces, we were F UP from the floor up on drugs and alcohol having fun. Hell man, I had time to think about what I said to you earlier, and most of it stands. But maybe we do need to tell them about us. I have never really focused on being a "Gen-X'er" until recently but the more I spend time thinking on it I can't deny it's a huge part of who I am and that the way we grew up (for better or worse) is what made me who I am today. Being a storyteller I decided to make this video when I realized the lack of Gen-X content on KZbin aside from the one-off's like Rogan. QUOTE: "Because this generation is making so many mistakes, we already learned. Maybe they need a bit of guidance told to them to choose from, and if they make the choice not to, its on them. " THIS! All day long, THIS!!! Gen-X'ers have so much knowledge from our adventures as misguided (or sometimes unguided as the case may be) youths that I believe would be tragic to lose. I suppose I could if I wanted to, but I just don't see a point. People like you - those who are far more extroverted than I - do just fine without me thrown into the mix. I'm far too introverted to expose myself to the world like this. Then there's the problem with language. I frequently use Sentence Enhancers. The pansies at YT tend to frown on that sort of thing because it won't make them any money. Besides, I'm too ugly. Being disabled, mutilated, and scraggly doesn't make one attract much attention. Of course, I'm the first to write up walls of text (as on one of your other vids) but to go on video, it's just not me. On that note, I once joined up on Reddit because...text...but found it to be a libtarded cesspool overloaded with stupidity and shortsightedness. And I have to say, I'm bloody-fucking-damn tired of walking on eggshells. So on a platform where I see people being censored and banned routinely, well, I just don't think it would be wise for me to invest all that time and energy into it. So I leave it to you, bud.

Okay - this is the second time so far I've seen where you said you "died 3 times" back when you were 48. I'm currently 48 and turn 49 in a few months. I'm curious what happened - but obviously you don't have to share if you don't want too. But I am curious and hope you are okay today! God bless you and keep you! You're still on point with your last paragraph here. I have seen a LOT of people comment similarly about being cancelled and having to self-censor themselves. I agree it's ridiculous and we shouldn't have to do that. I'm an old-school IT guy as well and it annoys the sh!t out of me that we basically developed the technology the younger generation is now using to push their ideology on us and think they have every right too. Ummm, no.

@@brandonkellerdotnet I got married (first time ever) when I was 48. March 31, 2018, to be exact. Less than a month later, I had a heart attack. This resulted in an aortic dissection, double-bypass, and a clot that still resides in the aorta. There is a bulging aneurysm on top of the T of the renal artery split, the clot's in there. The aneurysm measures 4x4.5cm currently - they say ~6-7cm is imminent death, so I might have a little while. All the surgeries, drug-induced coma, and trauma, resulted in a stroke. Not the normal kind of stroke that is caused by a wad of goop, but one caused by oxygen starvation. Vast chunks of memory are wiped permanently, the ability to create long-term memory is damaged, and I lost various bits and pieces off my extremities. That last was caused by a vasopressor that constricts blood vessels so blood concentrates in the torso. It is during surgeries and the 6-week coma that followed when I died a total of 3 times. Not the "whoopsie, he flatlined!" kind of died. The "covered body, disconnecting the machinery" kind of died. Pretty messed up. Technically, I'm still in recovery mode, but it's only because I'm going through therapy to try to learn how to learn again. If that makes sense. Otherwise, I'm a dead man walking, since the aneurysm slowly grows, and will eventually burst without warning, and that's the end of me. Basically, nothing to lose, so I don't mind pissing off a few libtards. ;)

Gen X has had to deal with aggravation at every turn. Job loss, Political unrest, changing landscape of life in general and the last thing they want to add is another pile of aggravation which is KZbin. Most want to salvage what's left of their life to eek out a comfortable existence and quite frankly it seems we'll be riding out the constant ups and downs all the way to the end.

But look where just "riding it out" has gotten us. The values and things we hold dear are now in danger of being taken away from us. If we don't start talking and showing why the way we think is important - then things will only get worse. We can't be pissed at the way things are and do nothing about it. That's not GEN-X.

if you want to be a top youtuber you really have to cater to young kids even teenagers are too old because the older you get the more varied your interests are. every kid likes cartoons and toys but its hard to find something every 30+ year old likes but you can still get over 10 million subs catering to adults. there was a short period in the first 2 years of KZbin when this wasn't the case in 2006 a man born in 1926 was the top youtuber for a short time but by 2008 you had to cater to the youngest people .i guess the age of the youtuber doesn't really matter since you need to be in your late teens to be able to understand how to make decent videos but even an 80 year old can do it if they got the knowledge but why would you if you care about quality

Its because your parents were narcissistic boomers. You saw how much they loved attention and it made you the way you are. I know millenials who had boomer parents who are the same way. They are repulsed by the idea of creating something that ultimately and directly gets them attention. Even if its for a good cause - they draw back at just the thought. Its because your parents were borderline sociopaths and very needy in terms of attention. They probably told you some real good lies about how hard their upbringings were - when as you got older you realized were mostly lies. It made you Gen Xers the way you are, and honestly having shitty parents was prolly the big reason you guys are my favorite generation and I'm not a gen Xer.

Then I noticed that there is a HUGE gaping hole on KZbin that Gen-X should be filling with the life experience that was hard earned. Sure we can reminisce about all the great times we had back in the day and talk about what bands were best, what Saturday morning cartoons were the best, and all that stuff. But I think we have a responsibility to share what we know and pass it along. GEN-X is unique. Next to my Grandparents generation I honestly believe we are the second best generation that has ever been. We saw the world transition in a way that I doubt we will ever see again. x I think it's a waiting game for a lot of Gen X'ers. o It's inevitable that the culture is going to shift back to the foundational years of the 90s and 80s, the faster the other generations wear themselves to the ground the faster we'll get there. o If one needs proof to see how much the present culture is thriving from the past, simply look at Highest-grossing films of 2024 by In-year release: † 100% of the movies are some type of sequel, with Deadpool & Wolverine being a type of sequel from two different franchises!

So true! Seems everything is cyclical and the past is constantly impacting future trends exactly how like your example of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. The thing I've noticed is that the only caveat is just how far back it goes. Meaning sometimes styles from the 50's come back into fashion, and then we move forward a few years and it's things from the 2000's, then it goes back and 80s are the in thing, then jumps to 2010, then we jump all the way back to the 50's again. Just seems random as to how far backwards we shift. I'd like to know who decides how far back trends go to recapture the past. LOL
