On my balcony I grew several species of native plants, they are not very big or many but they still attract a lot of insects and hummingbirds. I can't imagine the kind of impact that planting an entire forest of native species has.

Don't forget that trees also slow down winds, cools down daytime temperatures and keep nighttime temperatures higher, making forested areas have a more level/consistent temperature. They also keep the soil from running away in heavy rains with their roots. Just consuming carbon dioxide isn't the only thing they do. :)

Trees only slow down winds as long as the forest is divers in species. An abrasive surface allows the wind to slow down. Here in Germany the forests that still exist mainly consist of pine trees. They reach the same heights so there is a dublication above the trees as on the ground.

@@l.zeitgeist3584 I mean... a forest of all pines or all beech would still slow the wind down since they're literally obstacles in the way. But when it comes to species, health, and biodiversity it's terrible to just have one kind of trees. Sadly, natural forest are getting less and less common over the world. We, in Sweden, have mostly pine forest too, but still a lot of mixed as well. 60% or so of our country is covered in forest, but most of them are around 30-50 years old. That's troubling too, as old trees and old forests have more species than an all-young forest. So we get problems with certain bugs attacking young trees that normally would only eat old or dead wood.

@@l.zeitgeist3584 Technically, it's a forest, I guess. But hardly a healthy one. I tend to get mad every time I see them cutting down more trees. Like, please, just leave the forests be. Cut your stupid plantations down, but leave the natural ones. A few years ago people were protesting because they had decided to cut down a forest that was over 100 years old. Which is really rare nowadays. I don't know if they did or not, I just realized. Gotta see if I can find that out. So stupid. Yeah, it's hard to fix problems like that. :/

We've released a podcast on this topic a few months ago and have been working on this topic again this week for a video to be released on Monday - so good timing! As a rewilding organisation focused on bringing back true wilderness, this is an issue we face frequently. Often it is hard for businesses and individuals to properly distinguish a good project from a bad one and this can lead to some pretty misleading green washing. Tree planting is a tool, reserved for specific uses and not a general solution to everything.

Thank you for the question as it allows me to elaborate the point a bit more :) Broadly speaking there are 3 reasons to plant trees. 1. for commercial timber production to make wood and paper goods; 2. for ecological reasons to bring back wild ecosystems; 3. and for agro-forestry to support rural communities. Each of these is different in how they impact the surrounding ecosystem but they can often be portrayed as having the same or similar impact. We believe that often people want to invest in projects that either help people or wildlife but can unfortunately be misled and end up investing in commercial operations. Then when it comes to planting trees that claim to restore wilderness we have found 4 issues: 1. They disturb the soil and have a large short term carbon footprint 2. They skip ecological succession thus leading to a less natural and diverse forest 3. They plant non-native or even invasive species often in monocultures 4. They plant trees in areas that naturally should have none (i.e. peat bogs) In our eyes, one should consider planting trees in 2 main scenarios: 1. When the local seedbanks are extinct from an area and the only way to bring a species back is to re-introduce it 2. When speed is needed (in the case of severe erosion) Alternatives to consider are: Assisted Natural Regeneration and Enrichment planting If you head over to our channel we summarise all of these points in our latest video :) Please let me know if you have any other questions. To elaborate, what is ur company doing to prove u aren't doing any of those things stated? What is ur company doing to prove u are doing the things ur supposed to? We have great need for education in our villages in the Amazon. I have lived here and observed for 14 years. Many problems exist and big companies felling trees is still going on. A big reason is low income and to make and sell carbon for cooking and timber for building is attractive for the locals. I live in Padre Cocha, Rio Nanay, close to Iquitos, Peruvian Amazon.

There aren't any large reforestation projects near me (on the Gulf coast of Alabama), but I try to collect and/or grow as many native tree seeds and seedlings as possible, then plant them wherever I can on the edge of the nearby woods. Once I can buy some land, I'll be able to do much, much more.

Yeah we should stop that deforrestation, at least in most parts of the developed world they are used as a Ressource wich means they are replanted and not just cut down. Most of the deforrestation happens in not developed countrys but its hard too help the forrest´s there Edit: here in Germany we mostly have mixed forrest wich are managed, harvestet and replantet

@Hates Spam Yeah i get what you mean especcialy with the upgrading part. You dont always need the newest phone on so on i mean i am still using my IPhone 4 and that dor 8 years now and im fine with it. Also Biodiversity is very important, like i said here in germany we dont realy use monoculture most of the Time as our natural wood are so called "Mischwälder" wich basicly means mixed species, so in the typical German forrest you will find at least 3 different tree species even if its used for recources. And we deffinetly need too use our resources better and make less stuff that has a Break by Date... an example of the stupitity of our resource management can be seen in paper where 4 Hektar of Forrrest produce as much paper as 1 Hektar of Hemp, wich can be harvestet multiple times a year. But for that politics has too change and so much more as for exactly the efficency of hemp for example led too it being Banned as shareholders in the Wood industry lobbied too make it illegal and it worked... Goverment and Cooperations should interact with each other but here we are today :/ Btw Hemp can also be used too make glass, alternativ plastic, clothes, fuel and so much more. There even was a Car made almost fully of Hemp, the glass was though enough too withstand sledgehammer blows but as it sadly goes if its good for everything it aint good for buisness, and so we might have missed out our opportunity for plant based eco friendly products that could and did exist 100 years ago... Btw sorry for some miss spelling, English isnt my native language

As someone who's worked on both REDD+ and Bonn Challenge projects, can confirm that governments tend to focus too much on the economic aspects and ignore non-tree biodiversity. The Kenyan initiative is good though, there's increasing awareness in India as well that a more holistic approach is necessary, but sadly no one wants to use the word "political economy" just yet :p BTW, regarding the thumbnail; maybe it's a bit too extreme/clickbait? "Don't just plant trees" would be better, I think.

Yes! Finally a good video about this subject that I can share with people, this is such an difficult subject to talk about and it’s such an complex issue that’s not just solved by planting random trees. In here one of our current problems is that people mostly plant pine trees, because non native deers that have exploded in population destroy broadleaf and mixed sapling forests. They also spread diseases (Lyme mostly) and chronic wasting disease cases have gone up. This in turn affects the native biodiversity, so also an population control of certain species is needed to be able to maintain diverse forests (both encouraging native predators and hunting deer). Thank you for also showing some successful projects, great to see so much thought put into projects that maintain and help healthy forests and communities! Ive seen some conflicting things about the new team seas campaign and especially the big nets etc techniques they use to clean ocean, any chance to get an video on that subject?

@@JoeZorzin they tried that in Yellow Stone when the deer population boomed (as a result of humans killing all the wolves in the area.) Sadly, it was enough to reduce the deer to a more natural population and the local vegetation continued to decline. That is, until wolves were reintroduced. I'm all for hunting (poaching is completely different) but it doesn't always solve over population problems.

There is more to it with reforestation. Done correctly with biodiversity and native species in mind it is a habitat for hundreds of thousands of species. It must be done and must be done correctly. It's not the solution to climate change but it's a chain in the link. Concrete... now let's solve that problem and we'll really make some headway on climate change.

As a former tree planter in British Columbia, I know that I was only planting monocultural plantations, and NOT actually restoring the former forests that had been clearcut. I now beleive that there is little reason to ever clearcut forests, but rather we should selectively log what fiber we need, leaving the forests ecosystems to keep working.

This isn't the case where I live in the Pacific Northwest where our "managed" industrial forests are huge sources of carbon, while wilderness areas are carbon sinks.

In Indonesia, this is due to the increase in population, meaning that food needs are growing, forests are changing functions, both for plantations, agriculture, industry, and even housing. The growing population also produces waste and pollution. Moreover, the government also fully supports oil palm plantations No one in the city wants to have a tree for fear of collapsing and damaging neighbors' houses and paying for repairs. the city got very hot.

Planting trees, even native, destroys forever the bio-diversity. It is usually too condense, too monocaltivated (at each hectar), and kills vital insects during plantation. Just fight deforstation, reduce tree-burns&cuts, just keep what god gave us slowly in millions of years, that's all we need.

Many proper reforestation organisations are taking into account to plant native species, not monocultures and activating the local communities. For example Eden reforestation and Team Trees that you show video of. You make it sound like REDD+ is one of the only ones thinking about this.

I don't think people really get how trees sequester carbon, trees make wood as they grow, wood is made from carbon in the air, as long as you don't burn or let the wood decompose the carbon stays there, technically burning wood is renewable energy because as long as you plant as many trees as you burn you are carbon neutral. The problem is we have been burning oil/coal/etc and are expecting more trees to compensate for that added carbon, so actually we should need much more trees than what we had at the time we started burning fossil fuels. Once a tree is full grown, meaning it stops growing or slows dramatically it isn't storing any more carbon and actually would be beneficial to cut it down and plant a new one as long as the wood from it doesn't burn or decompose, so we need either a better carbon sink other than trees or something akin to storing the wood or maybe burying it pretty deep where decomposition is practically non existent while replacing the tree. Btw a trees growth is exponential so small trees will store less carbon at first but it will get there, also it's kinda misleading that cut trees release carbon, while technically true this is mainly the roots, leaves and tree trunk decomposing so it's not like it's actively producing it, it's simply the wood and organic matter left behind that couldn't be harvested.

This isn't accurate. Large trees that have reached full size do actually sequester carbon. In fact, they sequester much more than a small growing tree. Even though trees don't indefinitely create more mass, they still perform photosynthesis to fuel their cells. Remember that carbon dioxide is to plants what carbohydrates are to humans. Once a human reaches maturity, it doesn't mean they will never have to eat again. In fact most adults can eat much more than any growing child. It's the same with trees. The adult trees need to continue the process of photosynthesis to provide food for their massive organism. So no, it is not beneficial to cut down old trees - so long as they are still alive.

I opened a foundation called Earth Conservation Foundation which goal is to purchase old growth forest to preserve and reforest. Old growth trees are sooo important

Also not sure on the mechanism of this transfer, is it directly by fusion of roots like some trees that are interconnected(like quaking aspens), or is it with the assistance of some symbiotic fungi?

A bit sad that you did not adress the albedo effect which trees in some areas supress. For example it would not be such a great idea to turn the Sahara green or plant trees in boreal areas since it is not as effective as doing so in tropical areas.

I think the fact that there's no simple solution due to the complexity of all factors involved is lost on most people. But planting trees, like wearing face masks and recycling plastics, makes people feel like they're personally contributing to something. The real problem is changing they way large corporations act and that is only going to be possible by people changing their consumption habits thereby affecting profitability -- the only thing large investors like Blackrock, Vanguard etc actually care about.

With china's great green wall and the project in Isreal (sorry, forgot the name and this was a long time ago) there had been extensive studies done and the issues with monocultures were already raised then. Most of the reforestation projects that are in early concept stages right now have some or other clause calling for avoidance of monocultures. Not really a new or missed concern, its kinda been up there and now there are other challenges - i.e. the finer impact it has on local / regional climate.

I participated in tree planting between 2019-2021 and sadly I found out that a small % of trees survived, they needed after care, water and pruning which nobody provided :(

I've noticed that even in Germany forests are mostly sterile. They are timber production monocultures, and even if not, dead trees are removed just like animal carcasses, which means fewer fungi and insects and thus the entire food chain collapsed... moreover, highways and pesticides made things really bad.

I have seen a nice change which is amazing. In India, govt is making sure that native species of tree is planted. Peepal, that is a sacred tree and gives oxygen even at night is the go to choice in our area. it's awesome!

Reintroducing megafauna into Europe can go some way to helping bio diversity and increasing the net carbon sink of trees. I think the changing the economics of amazon should be priority for all European nations as it will have a much larger impact than almost any reforestation efforts on the old continent.

It's so sad that people who initiates planting trees are the same ones who forget animals as part of the biodiversity. In order for a forest to flourish, it needs worms, insects, reptiles like snake and mammals like rats, to enhance the carbon sink of the forest. It not just water, air, sun and let alone trees grow by themselves without animals. As me living in a tropical rainforest country, I felt terribly sad for the monoculture type of planting as it is really unnatural for biodiversity.

Great video! This is whats happening in the SE United States. Nothing but pine trees in rows, or shoved as close together as possible for future harvest. I have several ways of tackling this. Build balconies with trees and plants in the city, create subterranean communities which stops the expansion of above-ground infrastructure, force everyone in the world to plant one tree a year, switch from wood to metals and plastics (you can actually make 2 by 4s with recycled plastics, switch to green energy and invest heavily into nuclear fusion, even if we have to cut back on military spending to support it. I have other ideas as well but I'm not sure if they would actually work. The conglomeration of all of these would sustain the planet easily, it's just how much we care and the cost.

Grass is a type of plant with narrow leaves growing from the base. Their appearance as a common plant was in the mid-Cretaceous period. There are 12,000 species now.[3] A common kind of grass is used to cover the ground in places such as lawns and parks. Grass is usually the color green. Anybody who grows food and works with livestock will know "diversity" is key. Animals/livestock like to eat a diverse range of plants and trees as well. In Hinduism their is triveni tree. They are grown together with 3 different species of tree (peepal, neem, banyan) have medical benefits and also give more oxygen than other plant .They are also sacred tree according to Hindu and Buddhist believe...cutting them is wrong doing. When I maded project in school teacher said their is nothing like that and than started making fun of Hindu believes. I said We all know beliefs are made to protect something. No one is that much dumb who can't understand this small thing like this. 😂I was rusticated for a week😂😂 So the point is old legends are not myths they are created in a way so people follow them with fear and no one will do anything against that beliefs

Years ago I planted a bunch of trees for one reason. Shade. Plus their beauty (flowering varieties). And food (pears and pecans). And to save money in the summer on air conditioning.(using deciduous trees so the sun is on my home in the winter).

Planting trees alone is not always the best solution. While I personally grow 1000 trees every year, we must also consider the consumption of wood products such as furniture, paper, and wipes, and our other luxuries as well as the environmental impact of activities like meat production, which requires a lot of water and emits CO2. If they are cutting down 1000 trees, and we are growing 500 trees (with only a 5% survival rate), what is the best option? In my opinion, the best approach is to focus on preventing deforestation, consuming sustainable products and adapting simple echo friendly lifestyle rather than solely investing in blind tree planting

Very good video. Also, a reminder that although forests are super important, they are not the only type of ecosystem, or even necessarily the most important. For biodiversity to truly thrive we need a complex mosaic of different ecosystems - forests, sure, but also grasslands, shrubland, mangrooves, etc. Trees are necessary but so are open spaces that allow different species to thrive as well.

We in Bharat(India) also planting native plants more like Neem, Banyan, Acacia,Ficus Religiosa(max O2 emitter), In our house less furniture of wood, most of the doors , door frames, windows also of iron garders to save trees. Using chairs of either bamboo or bulrush , cane sticks. Once the trees start flourishing or even while planting them, spread seeds of vegetables and fruit trees and medicinal trees native to the land . Then while the trees grow some of the seeds also will grow and flourish along with them . We can install some beehives also which will pollinate all the plants and trees The vegetation will complement each other and biodiversity come into existence by itself. By caring for the trees other seeds also get benefited. Within 2or 3 years we will have fruits and vegetables and honey. Local economy is benefited. Some man-made lakes and canals and ponds will ensure rainwater harvesting which will prevent any dry spell in future . Comprehensive development saves time energy, manpower, finance .

There's something wrong: if you cut down trees for construction use, the carbon dioxide will not be released before the timber is recycled as firewood. It would be a good idea to use more tree in buildings than concrete. The growing World population need more land for housing and agriculture, which means, forest will be cut down. From going from horizontal to vertical farming, there's less need of land. This will also reduce the water consumption. Cutting or planting trees will do no harm to the average Global temperature, but on local scale we can measure the effect on the micro environment. The key is to choose the correct plants and trees for the location.
